  • Amazon Acquires Double Helix Games

    Amazon Acquires Double Helix Games

It’s no secret that Amazon wants to get into the video game business. The retailer has already made its own mobile game, and there are rumors that its building its own video game console for release later this year. Before that, however, it looks like Amazon is starting to build up its own talent pool through acquisitions.

TechCrunch reports that Amazon has purchased independent games developer Double Helix Games. The studio is known for making games based on existing licenses, like Silent Hill Homecoming, Front Mission Evolved and the reboot of Killer Instinct.

With this purchase, Amazon adds a pool of talented developers to its arsenal for whatever it has in store. The most likely scenario is the aforementioned game console which Amazon will need games for at launch. Instead of relying on independent developers to bring their wares to the new console, Amazon can now leverage the talent from its own group of developers and Double Helix to create compelling software for its hardware.

As for the gamers out there, it would appear that Amazon will support Double Helix as they wrap up development on their current obligations, like Strider and other unannounced games. While Amazon will continue to support their current projects, it will be interesting to see if the retailer allows them to take on new projects that are not directly related to Amazon’s own gaming aspirations. Amazon could very well set a new standard in games development by allowing a studio they own to develop titles on platforms other than those owned by Amazon.

Of course, it’s rather unlikely that this will be the case. Amazon, like any other game platform owner, wants to create compelling content that drives users to their platform. Amazon already has enough of a challenge convincing core gamers to pick up an Android-based console if it is indeed working on one, and compelling software from Double Helix could be just what it needs to bring in sales.

  • Capcom’s Strider Sequel Gets A New Trailer

Capcom’s Strider Sequel Gets A New Trailer

Capcom surprised everyone earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con when it revealed that a sequel to Strider was in the works. Excitement soon gave to way to skepticism, however, as it’s been over a decade since the last game in the series was released. It didn’t help matters either when Capcom revealed that Double Helix Games was developing it.

Despite this initial skepticism, the latest trailer for the game does a nice job of convincing gamers that this new Strider is the real deal. All fans could ever want from a new Strider game is here and then some. The visuals seem to be getting it just right as well.

Strider will be released in early 2014 for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. The game will be skipping the Wii U for now, but the development team has said it’s certainly a possibility if the demand is there. If the current petition asking for a Wii U version of Strider is any indication, you might not want to get your hopes up.

  • Comic-Con 2013: Capcom Announces A New Strider Game

Strider and its sequel are some of the most cherished action games of all time. Capcom has kept the fandom alive by including the game’s main protagonist, Hiryu, in its various fighting games over the years, including the recent Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Now Capcom is bringing the franchise back in a big way.

At its San Diego Comic-Con panel last night, Capcom announced that it’s working with Double Helix to create a new Strider game for current and next gen consoles. Some may feel a little uneasy about Double Helix working on the title, but you should at least check out the announcement trailer. It’s looking pretty good.

The guys at Double Helix are sticking to the classic Strider formula, but they are introducing some new elements as well. The major change this time around is the introduction of Metroidvania elements. In other words, players will explore an open world full of upgrades, branching paths and hidden rooms.

Of course, you may not be sold on a new Strider just yet. Perhaps you feel that anybody can make an announce trailer look good. What you need is gameplay, and Capcom has seven minutes of it just for you.

Strider will be released as a digital download in 2014 for the PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4 and PS3. There’s no mention of Wii U anywhere so Nintendo fans shouldn’t get their hopes up.
