  • What Is Sony Teasing With This PS4 Ad?

For the past few weeks, Sony has been marketing next week’s PS4 launch with a campaign called #4ThePlayers. The ads so far have been mostly focused on stoking nostalgia for the PlayStation brand, but today’s ad is a little different.

In a new ad that’s obviously meant to go viral, Sony references Street Fighter II in a spot for a service called Hadouken Cab. It’s actually a pretty witty piece of entertainment, but is there a deeper meaning behind it?

Kotaku notes that the ad combined with the Web site tie-in point to something Street Fighter related coming to the PS4. Capcom did just recently announce Ultra Street Fighter IV for PS3 and Xbox 360, but could the publisher have a PS4 version in the works as well? This ad seems to indicate that it could be something like that. It wouldn’t be the first fighting game from the current generation to get a next gen touch up.

As of now, however, the only Capcom game announced for next-gen consoles is the free-to-play Deep Down. That one is exclusive to the PS4, and that exclusivity may carry over to whatever Street Fighter project Capcom has in the works.

  • Adding Street Fighter’s Chun-Li To Fail Compilation Videos Wins

If ever anything was meant to be collected and presented in a compilation video, it’s people failing on a day-to-day basis. I mean, is it right to laugh at the misfortune of others? No, but who cares, especially when it’s in video format. No one can judge you if you’re laughing from the safety of your own home/office/cubicle, right? To give you an idea of just how popular fail videos truly are, when you search for that simple term, there are over 12 million results. Have fun sifting through that particular morass.

With that in mind, if you want your video to succeed, it has to stand out and grow some viral wings. One tried and true way to do that is to add some remix flavor to the proceedings in the hope that your creativity catches the eyes of blogs and web news sites around the globe. Using a popular video game character in your remix never hurts, either. Just ask the guys at ParodiePub. You might recognize the name from the “Blanka is a Troll” videos, a series that clearly demonstrates the creator’s love for Street Fighter characters.

As the title suggests, in their latest video, the group placed another popular Street Fighter character, Chun-Li, in the middle of the action, and let’s just say she doesn’t take kindly to people making fun of her powerful thighs. Observe:

While we’re a little late to the party–the video was posted two weeks ago and has almost 1 million views–it’s the thought that counts. And hey, if you haven’t seen it, it’s still new to you. Whatever the case, I truly hope this isn’t the first time we see Chun-Li wreaking havoc on those who were foolish enough to be in a position of failure while in her presence.

  • Ultra Street Fighter IV Announced, New Characters Revealed

The Evolution Championship Series was held this weekend, and in addition to some of the largest fighting game tournaments in the world, the event was host to big news for the fighting game genre. One of the biggest announcements of the weekend was that Super Street Fighter IV is getting another big content update.

Capcom announced this weekend that the update will re-brand the game from Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition to Ultra Street Fighter IV. The update includes five new characters, several new battlegrounds, and “completely” rebalanced gameplay based on fan feedback from the Street Fighter Facebook page. The new characters were, presumably, also influenced by a Capcom poll conducted in February.

Three of the new characters are easily recognizable from previous Street Fighter titles as well as from Final Fight: Rolento, Poison, and Hugo. Street Fighter III character Elena will also be making her debut in the Ultra update. A fifth “mystery” character that Capcom isn’t yet naming will be included as well.

The Ultra update will be available in “early 2014” as a digital update for Arcade Edition for $15, or as a stand-alone disc-based version for $40, which includes all current costume DLC.

  • Records Set For Hadoukens, Blowing Into Nintendo Cartridges

Last week was game week on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The host got the chance to play PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U games. However, the host also managed to set a few video game-related world records while he was at it.

Fallon brought officials from recordsetter.com on to his late night show last week to set a few records. Of course, being Jimmy Fallon, the records set were relatively silly. One involved a line of people dressed as Ryu from Capcom’s Street Fighter games firing off 20 “hadoukens” in around 38 seconds. Another involves a member of The Roots blowing into as many Nintendo cartridges as possible withing 20 seconds:

In addition to those records, Fallon also had audience members form a circle and brush each other’s teeth, creating the record for largest toothbrushing circle. Fallon topped it all off by playing five video games at once. To accomplish the feat, he used a Kinect game on the Xbox 360; one-handed both Street Fighter X Tekken for PS3 and Grand Slam Tennis for the Wii, used an NES Advantage controller with his mouth, and stood on an arcade version of a Dance Dance Revolution title:

  • Capcom is Polling Fans on Their Favorite Street Fighter Characters

Capcom is serious about its fighting games. Not a week goes by that minor changes and tweaks aren’t made to its games to make them more (or less, in some cases) balanced. So, when the publisher asks fighter fans for their opinion, it’s not likely to be just a simple Facebook popularity poll.

Today Capcom began polling fighting game fans on who their favorite Street Fighter characters are. The publisher claims that the results of the poll will influence games, marketing, and licensing opportunities (such as Sanrio plushies, no doubt).

“Please be honest in your answers,” states Capcom, and the company seems to be pretty serious about getting only opinions from fighting game fans. The poll ends early if the question “Have you purchased any fighting games for consoles, dedicated gaming handhelds or PC in the last five years (2008 – present)?” is answered with a “no.” Those who have bought a fighting game recently get to go on to choose their five favorite Street Fighter characters from the 67 fighters featured throughout the series’ history.

Future Street Fighter games will certainly feature new characters, and there may not be room for some of the less popular characters in the series. Sure, popular and classic characters such as Ryu, Chun-Li, and Akuma aren’t likely to go anywhere, but if you’re a fan of Rufus you might want to make sure your voice is heard in this poll.

  • Street Fighter X Mega Man Out Now For Free

Street Fighter X Mega Man, the crossover 8-bit 2-D platformer, has officially been released. A free copy of the game for PC can be downloaded via Capcom’s Mega Man group page.

The game is DRM-free and intended to promote the 25th anniversary of both Street Fighter and Mega Man. Street Fighter‘s anniversary was this year, and Mega Man‘s anniversary year has just begun.

The game features Mega Man battling his way across levels and fighting Street Fighters such as Ryu, Blanka, Dhalsim, and Chun Li in lieu of Robot Master bosses.

Meanwhile, Capcom has released a video showcasing just how Street Fighter X Mega Man came to be. It began as a fan-made project by a man named Seow Zong Hui, who showed off his work to Capcom execs at an event booth. When those same execs realized the game could be used to promote the cross-over anniversaries of the two classic Capcom franchises, they helped Hui polish it up in time for a release on December 17.

Today is 25 years to the day of the release of the original Mega Man for the NES.

  • Street Fighter X Mega Man is Real, Free to Download

This year was the 25th anniversary of Street Fighter, and next year will be the 25th anniversary of Mega Man. Leave it up to Capcom to actually find a way to make a crossover title using both of these properties.

The publisher announced this week that Street Fighter X Mega Man will be released on December 17. What’s more, the game will be free to download for the PC.

The 8-bit title will see players take on the role of Mega Man as he battles Street Fighter characters in lieu of the Robot Masters. Ryu, Blanka, Dhalsim, Chun Li, and other fighters will stand in the blue guy’s way. Mega Man will be able to take the powers of the fighters as he beats them.

A trailer for the game has also been released. Despite the fact that the concept of the game is silly, it actually looks very fun. Its classic Mega Man side-scrolling gameplay should induce nostalgia that reminds gamers why these franchises are still producing sequels after all these years.

  • Darkstalkers Resurrection Brings Back Capcom’s Best Fighting Franchise

Everybody has a favorite Capcom fighter. Some like the elegance of Street Fighter whereas others like the fast and furious gameplay of Marvel vs. Capcom 3. As for me, I was always a fan of Darkstalkers. Capcom created one of the most eclectic lineup of characters in its horror-themed fighter. Now it’s coming back in a big way.

Capcom announced at New York Comic-Con that Darkstalkers Resurrection would be hitting XBLA and PSN early next year. The game collects Night Warriors and Darkstalkers 3 into a single package. It’s similar to the recently released Marvel vs Capcom Origins, but better only on the basis of it being Darkstalkers. Here’s the first trailer:

It should be noted that this is the first Darkstalkers release since the PSP launch title – Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower. Sure, characters from Darkstalkers have shown in up other titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but it’s been too long since these guys have had their own game. Here’s hoping the success of this title convinces Capcom to make an all new Darkstalkers title.

The game will be released on XBLA and PSN early next year for $14.99. It will feature the netcode that powered Street Fighter III’s online multiplayer.

  • Surprise: Capcom Announces A New/Old Marvel Vs. Capcom Game

Capcom is looked down upon in the gaming community for a variety of reasons these days. One of the biggest reasons has been the continual milking of their fighting game franchises. I think we can all agree that it just got ridiculous when they launched Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 not even a year after the original hit. Well, get ready for two more new/old Marvel vs. Capcom games coming your way.

Capcom announced yesterday that Marvel Vs. Capcom Origins would be hitting the PSN and XBLA in September. The two-pack features the first fighters that set the stage for the seminal fighting classic, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. When the game launches laster this year, you can expect to see the re-release of Marvel Super Heroes and the original Marvel Vs. Capcom.

The new release is similar to what we saw with the digital release of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 a few years back. It will feature the smoothed-out HD graphics that we’ve come to expect from these rereleases as well as new features like online play and challenges to complete for achievements.

I had great memories of playing the original Marvel Vs. Capcom, so I can vouch for how wonderful this collection is. As for Marvel Super Heroes, it’s a decent fighter as well. If you can only get one digital fighter this fall though, I would suggest going with the sequel if you haven’t already bought it off the PSN or XBLA. It has way more characters and is just an overall more fun experience. If you want to know where the franchise came from though, this is the way to go.

Here’s the first trailer for the collection. It will be available on PSN and XBLA for $14.99. I’ll see you guys online in Marvel Vs. Capcom. Here’s hoping I still have my skills from 10 years ago.

  • Portal 2 Makes Super Street Fighter II A Fighter For The Ages

I was one of those weird kids that didn’t like Street Fighter II that much when everybody else was playing it on the SNES. I much preferred Rare’s Killer Instinct, but that was probably just due to the far superior announcer. Super Street Fighter II didn’t do much else to make me a fan, but there are a few things that could greatly improve the fighter. One of those things is apparently a portal gun.

The guys at ThePixelKingdom has made me realize how amazing it would be to have a Portal gun in a fighter. Sure, you could argue that a portal gun is basically just cheating when it comes to fighters. I counter that argument by saying that a portal gun would make fighters absolutely hilarious. The mere concept of being able to hit your opponent with their own attacks or send them flying through the air at terminal velocity is absolute genius.

The only unfortunate part about this whole amazing thing is that it’s not a real game. I highly doubt it will stay that way for long though. The temptation of being able to complete that stupid car punching mini-game in less than five seconds is too much to bear.

If you recall, there was a similar mash up of Portal and classic gaming not too long ago called Mari0. Better yet, that mash-up was a real game and it’s been continuously updated to provide more levels and more challenges for those who want 2D platforming portal antics.

ThePixelKingdom asks what games should get the Portal treatment next. At this point, I feel like portal guns are the next Guile’s Theme – it just goes well with everything. I’m partial to seeing a mashup of Castlevania and Portal just to see the look on Dracula’s face.

  • Video Game Villain Super Group Rears Ugly Head

Have you ever wondered what woud happen if some of the greatest video game villains teamed up to give the heroes a run for their money? I’m not talking Smash Bros. here, I’m talking a combination of power and resources to create a committee to destroy Mario, Ryu, Link, and Sonic.

Would it work? Could it work? They definitely have the resources. Bowser’s and Robotnik’s armies, Ganondorf’s magic, M. Bison’s crime network, Wario’s…..bodily functions???

Simon from Orlando, Florida has made our little fantasy come true. He has put 5 of the greatest video game villains ever into one art piece. Here is the great set piece of Bowser, Wario, Dr. Robotnick, Ganondorf, and M. Bison:

Elizabeth Banks Directed A Porn, Ferris Bueller Returns, & Drunk Pat Sajak

A viral video is one that becomes popular through the process of Internet sharing, via social media, sharing sites, or good ‘ole email. Everyday we highlight some of the best that are currently viral and some that are trending that way.

Today’s videos feature an short movie about how our clothes are made, an old lady who’s more badass than most of you (and me), and a one man Street Fighter match.

Ok, Ok, so it was a FAKE porno. Still, pretty funny to realize that she actually did this at some point in her life.

I wonder how many times in a row he tried to beat himself?

Fact: Robin Williams with beard > Robin Williams without beard. Oh yeah, it’s important kids learn about conflict. CONFLICT.

So that’s how clothes are made. If I’d known before, I would have been more interested

The First cycle from Niels Hoebers on Vimeo.

At least once in my life I’m going to wake someone up by slapping them in the face with a pizza.

If you’re a Pat Sajak fan, go ahead and watch the whole thing. If you just want to hear Sajak talk about getting drunk with Vanna White in the good ol’ days – Skip to 1:05.

I’m sure the cameraman appreciated having a real gun pointed at him during the reenactments in this feature.

We can only hope a strung out Charlie Sheen will make an appearance in a police station when Ferris Bueller returns for the Superbowl.
