  • What in the Bloody Hell Is This Steve Jobs Statue?

It’s unlikely that Steve Jobs is either looking up or looking down upon the world he left in 2011. But if he is, I’m sure he’s running around in some sort of delusional panic.

You can debate the legacy of Steve Jobs until you’re blue in the face, but you’d be fighting a losing battle if you said that his products aren’t beautiful. Just take a look at your iPhone–It’s sleek, fluid, and there’s not a wasted component anywhere.

Take a look at your iPhone again. Now, take a look at this statue of Steve Jobs that’s about to go up in Cupertino:

    What the shit?

According to Apple Insider (via Netokracija), this is the Steve Jobs memorial statue that’s set to adorn the halls of the company’s Cupertino HQ. That’s actually a scaled-down model recently unveiled in Belgrade, but the full 3-5 meter statue will look like that when completed.

The artist, sculptor Dragan Radenović , beat out over 10,000 entries in a contest to design the statue. Apparently, Apple liked its “imperfections.”

If you’re wondering, the odd-looking appendages above the binary numerals are Cyrillic letters.

I’d like to think that it’s actually some kind of special key to the room where they keep the iPhone prototypes. Yes, let’s go with that.

  • Pat Summitt Plaza & Statue Almost Finished

Pat Summitt Plaza & Statue Almost Finished

Friends, family, and fans alike are invited to witness the dedication of the Pat Summitt Plaza and Statue in Knoxville, Tennessee.

On November 22, at 11:00 a.m., everyone will be able to see the finished product of the plaza and statue at the corner of Lake Loudoun Boulevard and Phillip Fulmer Way.

Internationally-known artist and sculptor David Adickes of Houston, Texas is currently building the bronze statue of Summitt.

The winningest coach in NCAA men’s or women’s basketball was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2011. Summitt made the brave decision to continue as head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols for the 2011-2012 season, but with a lesser role. During that season, her assistant since 1985, Holly Warlick, took most of the responsibilities as head coach. Warlick became Summitt’s successor after Summitt retired at the end of the 2011-2012 season.

Summitt ended her 38-year career with a record of 1,098 wins in 1,306 games.

Many fans are already putting the dedication in their calendars.

While some are upset they won’t be able to make it to the event.

For those who do plan on attending, be prepared for some road closures in the area. At 9:00 a.m., Phillip Fulmer Way will close from the Andy Holt Tower administrative parking garage entrance to the intersection with Lake Loudoun Boulevard. Then at 10:30 a.m., Lake Loudoun Boulevard will close from Neyland Drive to Volunteer Boulevard. Attendees can find available parking at the G-10 garage, which is located between Thompson-Boling Arena and Neyland Stadium.

So wear your orange and support the amazing woman that is Pat Summitt. (As a non-Vol fan, the orange part was very hard to say, but Summitt really is a great lady.)

For more information on the project and how you can contribute with the over 550 that already have, visit www.patsummittplaza.com

  • Zidane Headbutt Statue Moved to Qatar

Zidane Headbutt Statue Moved to Qatar

The Qatar Museum Authority has decided to buy a 16-foot tall statue of Zinedine Zidane infamously headbutting Marco Materazzi, for an untold sum. Qatar, which is the tentative site of the 2022 World Cup, had moved the “ode to defeat” to its shores last week.

During the 2006 World Cup in Berlin, Zidane headbutted Materazzi in the sternum:

After the butting, Zidane received a red card and was ejected from the game, and Italy went on to defeat France 5-3. It was later discovered that Materazzi had insulted Zidane’s sister, which led to Zidane’s heightened anger. In 2010, Zidane said that he would “rather die than apologize” to Materazzi, though also admitted that he “could never have lived with himself” had he been allowed to remain in the game. Zidane retired after the incident.

The statue, entitled “Coup de Tete,” was created by Algerian Artist Adel Abdessemed, and was originally unveiled at a museum in France last year. It’s now being installed in outside of a restaurant in Doha.

The QMA’s director of public art told the Doha News, “Yes, we expect a lot of people to want to take photos with it, and of it. It’s an impressive piece. It’s a huge sculpture, and it’s done in the same style as Greek Mythological statues, but this glorifies human defects instead. It shows that although we sometimes treat footballers like gods, they’re not – they’re just human beings.”

Oil-rich Qatar has been recently struggling to keep dibs on hosting the 2022 World Cup. Aside from the classy headbutt statue acquisition, the country has been questioned by soccer federation FIFA about its use hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, in a situation similar to modern-day slavery. It’s been reported that 44 Nepalese workers died so far this year, while building World Cup infrastructure.

The World Cup is the largest sports event on the planet, and Qatar is putting about $100 billion into hosting the event. While soccer isn’t so big a deal in the U.S., foreigners take the game very seriously.

  • Carl Yastrzemski Statue Unveiled

    Carl Yastrzemski Statue Unveiled

Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski received another honor on Sunday, this time in the form of a statue.

Yastrzemski played his entire baseball career with the Boston Red Sox and the team unveiled a statue outside the right-field entrance of Fenway Park. His statue also happens to be in-between one of Hall of Famer Ted Williams and one of Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky, and Bobby Doerr. The latter statue is called “teammates.”

After a 30-minute ceremony, Yastrzemski said, “I’m deeply honored to stand before you today, seeing this statue in front of the place that I called home for 23 years. This is as important to me as being elected to the Hall of Fame and having my number retired. It’s a tremendous honor.”

Many former teammates of “Yaz” and current Red Sox players were in attendance for the ceremony. Former teammates included Dwight Evans, Bill Lee, and Hall of Famer Jim Rice. Current players included Jonny Gomes, Daniel Nava, and Dustin Pedroia. Red Sox manager John Farrell was also there to see the unveiling of the Yastrzemski statue.

This season’s Red Sox team has been compared to the 1967 team, which happens to be the year Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown.

The comparisons haven’t gotten past Yastrzemski either. “”In a way there’s a lot of similarities, playing as a great, great unit. Different guys doing something every day. That’s what you need to win the division, which they did. The comparisons I make is it was a very tight unit. I’m just waiting for the playoffs. I can’t wait for the playoffs to start.”

Red Sox fans were already having a great weekend after the Red Sox won the AL East title on Friday night after beating the Toronto Blue Jays. The statue was just the icing on the cake of a great weekend.

Boston Mayor Tom Menino dubbed Sunday “Carl Yastrzemski Day” in the city.

Yastrzemski’s 23-year baseball career with the Red Sox made him an 18-time All-Star, earned him seven Golden Gloves, and a member of the 3000 hit club. Just a few of the reasons “Yaz” was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.

  • Amy Winehouse Statue Unveiling Delayed

Mitch Winehouse, father of Amy Winehouse, has delayed the unveiling of the much anticipated statue of his daughter in Camden, England. Even though the statue was finished and approved by May of this year, Mitch Winehouse states that there are several blemishes with the bronze statue created by London artist Scott Eaton. Amy Winehouse’s former boyfriend, Reg Traviss, told the British newspaper Mail that “He doesn’t want anything to go up that he’s not completely satisfied with. But obviously it’s never going to look exactly like her.”

The statue depicts Amy Winehouse in a retro dress with a beehive hairstyle, which had become her iconic look. It is to be placed on a balcony at the Roundhouse, the venue where Winehouse gave her final performance, three days before her death. The statue is part of a larger project called #Amys30, which is a month-long celebration in September to commemorate what would have been Winehouse’s 30th birthday. The event is being put on by the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Founded by her father after her death, the Amy Winehouse Foundation seeks to help those who have addiction problems and has donated over 600,000 pounds to charities since its inception in 2011.

This is not the first time controversy has arisen over the proposed statue. In March of this year, London officials finally gave clearance for the project to be constructed after several issues were raised by local authorities. The main concern was that this statue would cause people to gather in the street near it. However, the project was passed by the council after it was agreed that the statue would not be lit up at night, hopefully deterring those who sought to view the statue as a shrine.

  • Steve Jobs To Be Immortalized In The Tech Capital Of Russia

Regardless of what you think of the Apple co-founder, a lot of people have mountains of respect for Steve Jobs. When he passed away last year, people showed their respect in a variety of ways. Budapest went the strange route and built a statue of Steve Jobs flashing gang signs. St. Petersburg, Russia is now continuing that fine tradition.

RT is reporting that a private foundation has announced a competition for local artists and designers to come up with a design for the proposed Jobs monument. There will be no limits on creativity so we could end up with another strange statue that confuses and amazes. It could also be something entirely different. The foundation says that it could be a “memorial board” or “electronic installation.”

So why is the statue being built in St. Petersburg? According to the foundation, it’s the center of Russian information technology. The city is host to the Leningrad School of Programming while the Russian Facebook, VKontake, was also founded in the city.

The city does not yet have a location to which they will place the statue as that will be decided after the winning concept is selected. Who knows? The winning monument could be a Steve Jobs version of Lenin’s crypt. People can visit a wax dummy of the late Jobs lying in a crypt perfectly preserved for the rest of time. A little macabre, sure, but the Russians have already proven that they’re fine with worshipping dead historical figures like gods.

I’m sure whatever the Russians come up with won’t be nearly as bad as the statue in Budapest or those creepy action figures that were being made in China.
