  • Star Wars Weekends Coming To Disneyworld

Star Wars Weekends Coming To Disneyworld

Disney and Star Wars have been in a harmonious partnership since 1986 when Star Tours became the very first non-Disney attraction to get it’s own ride. The ride was built and designed by a combination of Lucas Arts and Disney engineers at the enormous cost of $32 million dollars, which is double the cost of building the original theme park.

Since then, the partnership between the two have grown and now features a set of weekends every summer dedicated to Star Wars know as “Star Wars Weekends.” Here is what the website says about it:

“Star Wars Weekends is an annual special event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park that celebrates the legendary Star Wars Saga and the animated television series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday of each weekend, you can join celebrities and characters for special shows, panels, presentations and more!”

This years Star Wars Weekends are at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park and run from May 18th to June 10th every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. All you need is a ticket to the park and you get in so go and enjoy!!!

Check out these great promo posters designed by Disney to promote the weekend. The guys over at Disneyandmore featured them there. Below the pictures are a couple of pretty funny videos that were made about the weekend.

  • Star Wars Abstract Geek Art Makes Blockheads Of Us All

Abstract art has always made me think, “What the heck was that guy thinking?” But when you put things like Superman and Darth Vader into paintings of that same style, it somehow immediately make sense. Like I can look at it and think, “Now I get it.”

Tommervik has captured the essence of his superhero and geek images in his gallery of artwork over at deviantART. It doesn’t stop there though. He has also put into his perspective great things like the Muppets, Hockey, and Pee Wee Herman.

These are all oil paintings and all you see here are for sale. They are a little expensive compared to the normal “geek art” that I usually cover, but the quality is also a little better.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic Down 400,000 Subscribers

Electronic Arts’ (EA) fourth quarter fiscal year results were released yesterday, and they contained some disappointing news for EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic. The massively multiplayer online (MMO) game now has 1.3 million subscribers, a significant drop. During EA’s last investor conference call, it was stated that the game had 1.7 million subscribers, meaning a loss of 400,000 subscribers over the past three months.

During EA’s fiscal results conference presentation EA Chief Executive Officer John Riccitiello tried to put the best spin possible on the declining subscription numbers. Riccitiello stated that the loss was due to EA counting players who had not yet used their 30-day free trial, which comes with the purchase of the game. He framed the drop as an opportunity to build subscriptions in the future. From the transcript of Riccitiello’s conference address:

So where we are right now with Star Wars: The Old Republic is this. We’ve captured a great business. It’s the most successful MMO through this period in the history of our industry. But we are nowhere relative to sort of what the opportunity in front of us is. What happens from here are content releases every quarter, systems, and tutorials, and feature upgrades quarter to quarter and a future of expansion of content. What we tailored the game for was the core user. We tailored the game for people that have played more than one MMO and were existing MMO players.

Riccitiello mentioned some features coming to the game that he feels will help build subscriptions. In the future, downloads of the game will be “a lot” smaller, meaning it will be easier for new players to obtain the game. Also, “buddy keys” will allow subscribers to invite friends into the game for a short trial period. This is in addition to planned quarterly content releases.

1.3 million subscribers means The Old Republic, as Riccitiello emphasized in his address, has the second highest subscriber number for a western MMO. Also, that number of subscribers works out to around 19.5 million dollars per month that EA and Bioware, the game’s developer, are receiving from subscription payments. That amount might not be what EA investors were hoping for when news came that the had game sold over 2.4 million copies , but it should be enough to continue development of the game, whether or not subscription numbers can be increased in the future as Riccitiello hopes.

What do you think? Was the Old Republic subscriber dip simply casuals dropping the game after their trials, or is the impending competition from Guild Wars 2 and Diablo III beginning to hit the game? Leave a comment below and let us know.

  • LaserSaber: Star Wars Fans Get A New Toy

In the decades since the Star Wars movies were unleashed on us, no one piece of movie memorabilia has been the object of desire more than the lightsaber, the infamous glowing weapon used by Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader to great effect in the film. For years, kids used regular household items to fashion their own lightsaber, sometimes with hilarious results.

As technology progressed and toy companies saw the desire for a realistic-looking replica of the weapon, mass-produced lightsabers hit the market. They were okay, for the most part; at least, they satisfied the immediate needs of kids (and adults, who are we kidding) everywhere to pretend to cut off their best friend’s hand during an epic play battle. But none of them have managed to capture a realistic look for the saber…until now.

Wicked Lasers has introduced the LaserSaber, a magnificent piece of faux-weaponry that features realistic gravity-based technology to sheath and un-sheath the luminescent “blade”, just like in the films. The saber itself is 32-inches long and screws into any of the company’s existing Spyder 3 lasers. And while it’s not being marketed as a “toy” per se–that is, a toy for children–there are undoubtedly several hardcore fans out there who are itching to get their hands on it, even if they do have to wear special safety glasses while using it.

The LaserSaber retails for around a hundred bucks, making it a steal for such sweet technology.

  • Celebrate Star Wars Day With Clone Trooper Mash Ups

I should say AWESOME clone trooper mash ups, because thanks to the sterling work of two Deviant Art aces, we have even more Star Wars content for you to celebrate with, even if you don’t need anymore. Not only do these mash up works capture the feel of the Star Wars universe, because they are mashed up with Marvel superheroes, they fit with the theatrical arrival of The Avengers.

As pointed out by Geek Alerts, these mash ups were penciled by Jon Bolerjack and inked by JJ Kirby, and well, their work is something your inner Star Wars/Marvel geek will absolutely love. That being said, it wouldn’t be surprising if some of the more hardcore Star Wars fans took issue with the use of Clone Troopers as opposed to Stormtroopers, but hey, you can’t please everyone.

Furthermore, trying to do so will result in something much less awesome:

With all of the above going on, how are you celebrating your Star Wars Day? As for me, I’ll probably fire this gem up on the PC:

  • Enjoy a Sexy Wookie Bubble Bath For Star Wars Day

Happy Star Wars Day! Every May 4th is designated by geeks all over the world as Star Wars day. Why you ask? May 4th. May the 4th be with you. Get it? Yeah. Now that you are appropriately bemused and/or disgusted with that joke, take a look at the palate cleanser below. It features lovely brunette women in a bubble bath, lightsabers, and a Wookie:

Actor Seth Green created this satirical ad short to celebrate Star Wars Day. It is based on a similar fake ad for “SABER” body spray from 2009 that was written and directed by Adam Green.

The speed with which this playful splash-fight escalates is remarkable, though these girls might want to look to their Sith elders (grandma lightsaber) to improve their lackluster lightsaber skills. I don’t even want to imagine the amount of brushing it must take to get all the tangles out of a wet Wookie.

Leave a comment below and celebrate Star Wars Day with us.

  • Telecomm Industry Fully Supports CISPA Passage

In Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, there’s a quote fitting the Telecommunications Industry’s reaction to the House of Representatives passing CISPA, saying “So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause. ” While a little bombastic, considering the Industry’s behavior, it’s also very apt. Who knew Senator Amidala–and George Lucas–could so profoundly predict the near future? Furthermore, who knew Natalie Portman, after all the grief she took over her prequel performances, would have such a prophetic line?

The reason the word applause is so fitting has to do with the title–Telecommunications Industry Applauds House Passage of CISPA; Calls for Swift Senate Action on Cybersecurity–of the press release the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) put out earlier today.

The title reveals just about all you need to know concerning the release’s content. It’s a great deal of “CISPA strikes the right balance between strong cyber protection and a flexible, innovation-friendly framework…” and “…it establishes a collaborative approach that won’t introduce heavy bureaucracy that could harm high tech innovation…”

Some of the TIA’s more prominent members include:

    Apple
    Dell Inc.
    Dolby Laboratories Inc.
    Intel Corporation
JPMorgan Chase & Co. — an investment firm…
    Kenwood USA Corp.
    Microsoft Corporation
    Motorola Mobility Inc.
    Nokia Inc.
    QUALCOMM
    Samsung Telecom. America

This is only a small fraction of a clearly large and powerful contingent. I’m curious, however, about the inclusion of Motorola. Considering the Google purchase of said company, does this mean Google, a staunch opponent of SOPA, is a CISPA supporter? Furthermore, the search engine king has remained tight-lipped about their position, save for copping to lobbying efforts, does Motorola’s appearance here give Google position away?

As for the privacy issues, your position on CISPA concerning privacy will dictate how you react to the aforementioned Star Wars quote:

    Queen Amidala herself

Is CISPA the threat to privacy some many–including us–are making it out to be? Considering the lack of respect for the Fourth Amendment that has been heavily attached to the version that’s been approved, it’s quite possible CISPA will indeed be a threat to individual privacy. The way the amendment is worded, warrants based on probable cause do not apply. Is this something that should be applauded?

The TIA’s statement, in its entirety:

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech global communications networks, applauded the House passage of the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) and called for swift Senate action to improve the nation’s cybersecurity.

TIA President Grant Seiffert commented, “CISPA strikes the right balance between strong cyber protection and a flexible, innovation-friendly framework. The legislation takes a significant step forward in safeguarding consumers and businesses from increasingly aggressive and sophisticated cyber attacks. At the same time, it establishes a collaborative approach that won’t introduce heavy bureaucracy that could harm high tech innovation. The relationship between government and industry that this bill supports is critical to the current and future economic success and security of America.”

“CISPA gained bipartisan support in the House and we encourage the Senate to act quickly to consider this bill,” Seiffert continued. “The ICT industry plays an important role in detecting, preventing, and responding to cyber threats faced by U.S. institutions and businesses. Legislation that goes beyond the flexible and collaborative approach taken by CISPA could both undermine industry’s effort to fight cyber crime and generally harm American innovation.”

Last week, TIA sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) urging them to support cybersecurity measures that protect U.S. innovation and reflect the borderless, global nature of today’s cyber threats. The letter—which can be viewed in its entirety here —encourages members of Congress to focus on the following policy goals and legislation:

    • Improving Information-sharing. Ensure that the private sector has access to information necessary to defend against cyber attacks, protect the private sector from liability for its efforts to improve cybersecurity, and support existing information-sharing and analysis organizations.
    • TIA supports the Cyber Intelligence Sharing Protection Act (H.R. 3523).

    • Supporting Cybersecurity Research and Development. Increase federal cybersecurity R&D activities to complement the significant efforts already being made by the ICT industry in this area.
    • TIA supports the Cybersecurity Enhancement Act (H.R. 2096), and also supports the Advancing America’s Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Act (H.R. 3834).
    • FISMA Reform. TIA supports efforts to improve and harmonize cybersecurity programs across government agencies. In doing so, Congress should focus on the security practices of agencies and their personnel while avoiding ICT security standard requirements that could prove disruptive to the ICT supply chain.
    • Improving Public Awareness through Education. TIA strongly supports federal efforts to increase awareness of cybersecurity issues among both institutional users and the general public.

At no point does the statement acknowledge the potential privacy–and liberty–risks CISPA represents, yet one of the more lucrative industries of the modern era fully supports the bill to the fullest.

So again, is the potential threat to civil liberty and privacy worth applauding?

  • Darth Vader Brings Humor To Star Wars Kinect

Is this enough to save the face of Star Wars Kinect for the Xbox 360? While the video/trailer has been online for sometime now (January 26), this particular video is now hitting the viral stage, thanks to a post from Boing Boing. What we have is a humorous attempt to market the now-released game, and to be honest, if this kind of advertising was more prominent, as opposed to the dance-off trailers, perhaps the buzz surrounding Star Wars Kinect would be a little higher.

A quick glance at Twitter, as well as the comments for the Darth Vader video, gives us a good indication about the game’s reception:

@IGN: Is a dancing Han Solo in Kinect: Star Wars really THAT bad? http://t.co/yYf9NSOp” Yes, yes it is. 36 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Of course, LucasArts will take the sale regardless if it’s for laughs or for the serious Star Wars fan. As for the YouTube comments directly associated to the lead video, they were a lot less forgiving than the Twitter verse, which actually came off as tame:

fuck this game and give us Star wars battlefront 3

    TehClanLeader 2 months ago

That, friends, is the most-liked comment for the video in question.

    Sad, but true.

    Murderous….. rage……. BRIMMING!

And that, folks, is what a poorly-received Star Wars game gets you. It should be noted that, courtesy of Metacritic, the overall score for the game was 56 out of 100. Conversely, a game like Skyrim nailed down a 96 out of 100. Despite the low score, VGChartz.com reveals the game is currently the number one selling game for the Xbox platform on a global scale.

Clearly, Star Wars is still somewhat critic (and peer) proof.

  • What If Darth Vader Was A Good Father?

Ever wish that George Lucas would go further into a what if scenario about Vader being a good father and not the deadbeat not there dad that he was? In his defense he didn’t really know that Luke and Leia existed. But he would still be half human half robot and would probably scare the crap out of every little kid!

This great drawing explores everyday things that a father and son might go through, but this is with Vader and Luke instead. It’s from Jeffrey Brown’s Darth Vader and Son.

The Rancor going after the Twi’lek dancer OOla in this great poster. The art was done by Mark Daniels and Mark Steel and features a great vintage horror movie reminiscent of the mummy or the wolfman.

The poster takes one small part of the “Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi” movie and turns it into this masterpiece with vibrant colors and an obvious 50’s horror movie feel.

  • Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys Trailer Arrives

Full disclosure: Back in the day, I was a notorious Star Wars toy collector. I had dozens upon dozens of figures in my personal collection, though, being a kid at the time, I took all of the figures out of their packaging and used them to recreate some of my favorite scenes from the movies. Sometimes I’d even cross-pollinate; it wasn’t entirely uncommon for Luke Skywalker and a mighty batch of Ewoks to wage war against Destro or Cobra Commander while dodging attacks from a small group of Rock Lords. I feel that I may have revealed too much.

Below you’ll find the teaser trailer for writer/director/producer Brian Stillman’s upcoming documentary “Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys”. The film is a loving look at how these molded plastic delights influenced an entire generation of children, and how they continue to have a remarkable hold on countless adults the world over.

    From the official plot outline:

In backyards, playgrounds, basements, and bedrooms, Star Wars toys helped kids re-enact scenes from their favorite movies, and create entirely new dangers for Luke Skywalker and his friends to face. They were lusted after on holidays and birthdays, swapped with great cunning out on the school yard, and carefully collected like fine treasures. Like no toys before them, the action figures, space ships, play sets, and props were a phenomenon that swept the nation with as much force as the film that inspired them. Along the way they transformed both the toy and movie industries, earned those behind them vast amounts of wealth, and ultimately created a hobby that, 30 years later, still holds sway over not only the people who grew up with the toys, but also an entirely new generation of fans.

Plastic Galaxy is a documentary that explores the groundbreaking and breathtaking world of Star Wars toys. Through interviews with former Kenner employees, experts, authors, and collectors, it looks at the toys’ history, their influence, and the fond and fervent feelings they elicit today.

Although the teaser states that the film will be released this August, it’s actually been Google+Reader”>pushed back to November. When you’re ready to geek out a little bit, feast your eyes on the 30 seconds of glorious memories below. After that, take a moment to gawk at some of the photos pulled from the official Facebook page. They’re pretty nifty.

  • Grandma Takes a Lightsaber to Dubstep [VIDEO]

With the EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO on hold today due to a patch-related mix-up, you may be hard-up for your Star Wars fix. You’ll be happy, then, to see this video portraying one older woman’s lightsaber skills:

It seems granny doesn’t appreciate dubstep. And, though her technique is odd and her stance is unconventional, that woman has perfected her lightsaber throw. Let this be a lesson to young people everywhere: respect the elderly. You never know which of them might have a deep connection to the force. Also (and I’m just speculating here) midichlorian count might increase with age.

The poster of the video, andrewmfilms, has more of these short films on his YouTube page. All of them blend video game and pop culture references into real-life scenarios. Some good ones include Real Life Super Mario Bros., Minecraft: Zombie Attack, and Metal Slug in Real Life.

Here is a found footage-style short film andrewmfilms posted a month ago that could serve as a public service announcement, highlighting the dangers of abusing ancient dragon phrases:

Wow. Perhaps ZeniMax Media’s recent trademarking of the famous dragon shout was actually a bid to save lives.

Star Wars fans are some of the luckiest fans alive. • Players React to Star Wars: The Old Republic Patch 1.2

Star Wars: The Old Republic’s patch 1.2 (satirically dubbed “the Jesus” patch by some fans) was finally released this morning, and now fans and detractors alike are weighing in on whether the huge changes it brings will help the game garner more subscribers. Just 24 hours from the patch’s release, it was announced that one of the most anticipated features of patch 1.2, rated player vs. player (PVP) combat would not be implemented. It was disappointing for a large number of subscribers, so Bioware is already fighting an uphill battle to please fickle MMO fans.

The patch is almost 1GB, meaning it will take a while before players can jump into the action. Players can read the patch notes now posted over at the Old Republic site to get an idea of the specific changes to classes, quests, and gear. Users have already been raving and ranting about the new changes on Twitter. Popular tweet topics include the missing ranked PVP, the new customizable interface, the much-lauded “legacy system,” and possible bugs associated with the patch:

  • Star Wars: The Old Repbulic Patch 1.2 Going Live on Thursday

Subscribers to Electronic Arts (EA) and Bioware’s Star Wars MMO have been waiting months for many of the features that were promised at the launch of the game in December. Users won’t have to wait much longer, since Patch 1.2 for the game will be released to live servers on the morning of Thursday April 12th. The game servers will be down from 12:01 am CDT until 8:00 am CDT in order to deploy the patch. The “Star Wars: Old Republic” Website will remain available during this time, though. Different versions of patch 1.2 have been available for a few weeks now on Bioware’s public test server. According to Bioware, the patch will be a whopping 1GB in size, depending on when you last updated the game.

The patch is much-anticipated by players for the wealth of game-changing content it will bring. Additions to the game will include new armor types, guild banks, and new content for users to experience. Content updates will include a new “flashpoint” for up to 4 players, a new “operation” for 8 or 16 players to tackle, and new daily missions on the planet Corellia.

Player vs. player combat will be expanded in the patch with rated PVP, in which players will be ranked and matched against similarly skilled players. Players will be able to compete in a new “warzone” called Novare Coast.

Patch 1.2 is also the launch of a feature Bioware has been bragging about since last year: the “Legacy System.” The system will reward players with new abilities and perks for having and leveling-up multiple characters in the game. Players will be able to unlock “legacy abilities” based on their “family tree” of characters and their “legacy levels.”

The imminent release of the patch was announced on a blog post on the “Star Wars: The Old Republic” website. The post was linked to by The Old Republic Twitter account:

What do you think? Will Patch 1.2 bring more users on board with The Old Republic for good, or is it not enough to hold onto those subscribers who might be leaving to play Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2? Let me know in the comments below. In the meantime, check out the Patch 1.2 preview video shown at this year’s Game Developer’s Conference.

  • Science Fiction Stacks Up To Real Technology [Infographic]

One of my favorite genres of fiction is science fiction. It’s fun to see what writers see as being the future of technology. From the original Metropolis to Star Trek to The Fifth Element, mankind has always imagined the next great breakthroughs in technology.

Today’s infographic from AT&TSavings shows that what we once thought was just future talk is right now in front of us. It’s also usually in forms vastly different than what scientists and authors thought they would looks like years ago. As an example, Metropolis was made in 1926 and has the first use of a video phone. It wasn’t until 80 years later in 2006 that this dream came to fruition with Skype. Another fun example is the universal database in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy from 1981. While it’s a bit of a stretch to call it a universal database, Wikipedia is the closest approximation to all the data contained in the Guide.

The rest of the list features some fun sci-fi gadgets like the Death Star’s planet destroying laser that’s now being used in a much smaller capacity by military lasers. The last few years, however, have seen a huge increase of researchers making good on years of sci-fi speculation. We’re now on the cusp of making self-driving cars, flying cars, space elevators and other futuristic things.

All of this is just to say that without sci-fi, there probably wouldn’t be the amazing inventions we see today. It takes the imaginations of these men and women who dreamed of the future to create the modern inventions we use in our every day lives.

  • Star Wars Kinect Features Dance Off

Star Wars Kinect had ten different studios working on the new XBok 360 title. That’s over 200 people collaborating on the project. You would have thought with so many people, one of them would have realized there are going to be a lot of angry fans about this portion of the game…

Follow the YouTube link on the video and you’ll notice there are three times as many “dislikes” as there are “likes.”

The official E3 trailers for the Star Wars Kinect game mentioned nothing about a dance-off. Possibly for fear that fans would commit mass suicide.

My reaction was more “WTF?”, than the sheer horror that many fans seem to be expressing.

There are about a million tweets being posted about how “a part of me has died”, and “my childhood will never be the same,” so I just decided to skip all that and find the funny ones.

The only thing I noticed in this ridiculousness is that Han Solo’s crotch is constantly being “AWESOME!”. http://t.co/9Txt02WX 1 minute ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto
