  • Star Wars Toys Used To Recreate Classic Photos

‘Troopers Raising The Flag On Iwo Jima’ (Joe Rosenthal’s ‘Raising The Flag On Iwo Jima’)

Is there anything that a clone trooper can’t do? Besides live longer than 20 years? The Clone Trooper has become an iconic character in the vast Star Wars universe and will be for a very long time. So when a Canadian teacher decided to use Star Wars toys to make art, we all noticed.

As part of a year-long project ‘365 days of clones’, Canadian art teacher David Eger has recreated famous photographs and paintings using Star Wars figurines. The scenography is done in real life rather than in photoshop, in a project that was Eger’s response to his new year’s resolution to pursue “personal photographic endeavors” more often.

Eger photographed each piece on a date relevant to the original work. The anniversary of the date the photograph was taken in the case of most contemporary pieces, or the birth, or death dates of the artist. You can go check out his Flickr page for some more awesome photos of Star Wars toys.

  • Star Wars Posters In Saul Bass Style Redefine Cool

Saul Bass is a graphic designer responsible for some of the most iconic images and logos in the history of entertainment. From the AT&T globe to the title sequence from Tom Hanks’ “Big,” you can see his influences everywhere. United Way, Dixie, General Mills, and Continental Airlines all have his particular style attributed to their logos.

Alex Clark from Folkstone, England decided to pay tribute to Bass when he did a redesign of sorts to some classic Star Wars posters. The southerner created 5 posters to celebrate some of the most iconic characters from some of the most iconic movies of all time. Check out his profile at Red Bubble where you can purchase a poster of any of the prints for around $26.

  • Here’s The Star Wars-Themed Gotye Parody You’re Looking For

    Because f*ck George Lucas, apparently.

Many Star Wars fans can relate to the notion that the Star Wars of old has been dumped on, tainted, over-modified, and generally fouled up by a little too much hands-on action in the decades following the series’ debut. To these maligned fans, they may often sit back and wonder just what happend to the Star Wars they used to know.

Oh, someone has now done a song specifically about this? It’s actually called “The Star Wars That I Used To Know?” It’s a parody of that ridiculously popular Gotye song? Good, I was hoping for that.

Courtesy of Teddie Films, check out the back and forth between Darth and George, complete with wonderful stanzas like:

Now and then I think of when I was in power
Like choking people with the Force until they died
But then you told them all my history
    And took away my masculinity
And had my character portrayed by subpar actors.

You are now addicted to an overuse of graphics
And making Greedo shoot first? Han shot first.
So when you tried to have the Force make sense
    You introduced the midichlorians
And what’s the deal with having me be dubbed over (Noooooooooo!)

“It’s a story of heartbreak to which Star Wars fans everywhere can relate. And even with all that heart ache, it’s still a better love story than Twilight,” says Teddie Films.

Now, get that unstuck from your head sometime within the next year. Good luck with that.

These Star Wars Crochet Patterns Show Why You Can Even Sell PDFs On Etsy

The average Etsy may not like it much when Etsy features sellers who aren’t selling handmade goods, but something tells me the community will be alright with sellers selling PDF documents, particularly if they’re this awesome (and, of course, have to do with handmade goods).

Etsy seller lucyravenscar is selling PDFs of Star Wars crochet patterns. That’s 13 patterns for $34, and not even with the actual crafts. Just patterns.

    And Feedback is 100% postitive.

The seller is selling patterns for Boba Fett, C-3PO, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, an Ewok, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, a Jawa, Obi-Wan Kenobi (young and old), Princess Leia, R2-D2, and Stormtrooper and Yoda. Here are some pics:

  • Hughes The Force Mashes Up John Hughes, Star Wars

So what happens when you mix John Hughes, Star Wars with a touch of Kevin Smith? It might be something like Hughes the Force, a 35 minute movie that mixes one part Weird Science and one part Fanboys as some high school Star Wars-loving teens try to get into the end of the year high school party. To do, the duo, Simon and Henry, need to bring one hot girl with them, which leads directly to them creating a real-life Slave Leia, much like Gary and Wyatt did in Weird Science.

While the end result isn’t Kelly LeBrock in a white t-shirt, it’s nothing to turn your nose up at, either. In fact, because of the Slave Leia costume, the result might actually be superior. Of course, after their creation is complete, the trio sit on the couch and watch movies, much to the chagrin of their attractive creation.

From there, the adventure really begins. I’m not going to spoil anymore, so check it out for yourself:

If watching it on YouTube is, for some reason, not good enough, you can go to HughesTheForce.com and download the movie to your hard drive, complete in 720p for mobile users and 1080p for tablet and PC/Mac users. There’s also bonus content for the completist in you if you’d like to see some deleted scenes and experience Kevin Smith’s outtakes. It should be noted, however, that Smith did not direct, write, or produce Hughes the Force, but he does have a cameo in it.

Naturally, when you attach his name to a geek project, it provides some recognition and increased credibility, even if the creation itself doesn’t need it. In this case, Hughes the Force may not need Smith’s attachment, but it certainly hasn’t hurt, either.

  • LMFAO Party Rocks To Star Wars Cantina Theme

With the two big songs that hip hop band LMFAO have released (Party Rock Anthem and I’m Sexy and I Know It), there have been so many parodies released that are floating around the web; however, I don’t think anyone has ever imagined the group “party rocking” to the cantina music from Star Wars IV: A New Hope. If you are unsure about which scene I am talking about, I have provided a YouTube clip below from the SW movie.

You wouldn’t think that any popular dance could put to the cantina music, because it is just so peculiar; however, there was a genius out there who dubbed the video of LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” with the music of the Star Wars cantina scene.

This clever creation has also sparked some interest in the Twitterverse:

  • Time-Lapsed 3D Printer Yoda: When 900 Years Old You Reach, Look as Good You Will Not

Time-Lapsed 3D Printer Yoda: When 900 Years Old You Reach, Look as Good You Will Not

Although George Lucas gave it his best shot at destroying the Star Wars legacy with those three bowel-baked prequels he dumped on the world, some aspects of the canon have managed to remain endearing to fans. Yoda would certainly be counted among that category. Whether it’s his inverted vernacular or his fuzzy ears or the party-ready quotability of his prophetic quotes, the diminutive Buddhist Jedi of the Light Side of the Force remains a fan favorite.

Witness, then, a splendid example of Yoda-inspired fanfare as one savvy designer’s Makerbot Replicator prints a 3D bust of the Jedi master. Printed at .1 mm layer height with a 10% honeycomb fill and of course the requisite green hue, the video uploader, BusyBotz, demonstrates how incredibly detailed an object can be sculpted with 3D printers. According to BusyBotz, the entire sculpture took a little less than 5 hours to complete.

Watching the video, it’s almost as if Yoda simply materialized from the surface of a desk so as to remind you, “Do or do not; there is no try.”

This example of 3D printing sorcery wins the whole week.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic May Be Going Free-To-Play

For a minute there, it seemed like Star Wars: The Old Republic was going to be the next big MMO that could take on WoW at its own game. Interest in the game quickly wore off, however, and the developers have been scrambling to get updates out as fast as they can to renew interest in the game. One of those updates may be making the game go free-to-play.

In a recent interview with GamesTM, The Old Republic’s lead designer, Emmanuel Lusinchi, discussed the challenges of running a subscription-based MMO when there are so many good free-to-play MMOs vying for attention. He acknowledged that their biggest competitor in the market isn’t WoW, but rather the free-to-play genre.

So does that mean The Old Republic is going free-to-play anytime soon? When asked of the possibility, Lusinchi only said, “The MMO market is very dynamic and we need to be dynamic as well.” He then goes on to directly say that they’re looking at free-to-play, but nothing is set in stone.

If you’ve been following the MMO market over the last few years, you would see that the trend is now free-to-play. Even when a subscription-based MMO comes out, it quickly moves to free-to-play as users can’t justify spending a monthly fee. One of the major examples of the last year was DC Universe Online which went free-to-play within six months of its launch.

So would it be a good move for The Old Republic to go free-to-play? Well, we need to look at a number of factors. Going free-to-play is usually a sign of failure and EA obviously doesn’t want that. At it’s E3 press conference, the publisher was touting its subscription numbers and the amount of work BioWare putting into the game. On the other hand, going free-to-play can increase revenue exponentially since more people are playing the game while buying lots of add-ons via micro-transactions.

It’s a complicated issue. The best compromise would be to offer some form of free-to-play to everybody, while giving subscribers special perks. It would get more people playing the game, while retaining the current subscriber base. It’s a win-win for everybody.

  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars Launches Incredible Season 5 Trailer

One of the highlights of the expanded universe has easily become Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The series started of a little slow in my opinion, but now that I look back on it, it was definitely done for a reason. The relationship between Anakin and Ashoka needed to be cultivated and groomed so they could trust each other going forward.

The other important part for the previous 4 seasons has been to show the relationship between the Jedi and the Republic, and how it will become strained as time goes on and the series pushes towards Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge Of The Sith. From the look of this trailer, season 5 will be a lot darker and looks to be completetly awesome:

As you can see, Darth Maul is back and will be in a story arch, so are the Mandalorians. It looks as though there will be a huge story arch involving the liberation of an occupied Alderaan. There looks to be ore death, and the enemies of the Republic seem to be gaining steam in the fight which leads me to believe that things are going to come to a head this season. I would not be surprised if there are only 2 or 3 seasons left.

Season 5 starts this fall on Cartoon Network.

  • Nerdy Zombies Invade Philadelphia Comic Con

    Zombie Darth Vader

Zombies are huge right now. Probably bigger than pirates or ninjas ever were. So when I saw these great Zombie art pieces from comic artist Ken Haser I had to post them.

WebProNews reached out to Ken to ask him about the pieces and this is what he had to say:

“They were done as commissions at last week’s Wizard World Philly and I usually get a lot of zombie character requests.”

I immediately wanted to know how much he usually charged and how long they took because as a non-artist I immediately assume that they are thousands of dollars and take months of work. “I Usually charge about 50 for the copy paper size and 100 for the big 11X17,” he said. “They can take between a 1/2 hour to 45 minutes for the small ones and an hour or 3 for the big ones— depends on the amount of detail.”

Check out the trade paperback for his comic “The Living Corpse: Exhumed” comes out on June 20th from Dynamite Entertainment!

I love the Star Trek Captains, because all I can imagine is the Trekkie they are eating was probably so stoked to meet them, having a nerd-gasm and all, and then they started eating him.

Ken Haser has worked on various comic titles including “The Jersey Devil”, “Digital Webbing Presents”, “Warmaggedon”, “The Eyes of Asia”, “The Living Corpse” and others. Ken is currently sharing writing and artistic duties for “The Living Corpse” from Zenescope, which has also been optioned for film. He has also done a lot of work with Dynamic Forces doing remarks.

  • Star Wars 1313 Gameplay Shown at E3

Star Wars 1313 Gameplay Shown at E3

When Star Wars 1313 was announced last week, the excitement and discussion was mostly based on speculation. This week, in the midst of all the E3 festivities, GameTrailers and Spike TV were able to get hold of some gameplay footage from the demo that debuted this week at E3. Dominic Robilliard, the creative director at Lucas arts, was on-hand to show off the gritty (for a Star Wars game, at least) new 3rd-person action game.

Keep in mind that Robilliard states that the footage seen is all real-time, in-game footage and not simply a cut scene:

As you can see in the footage, the graphics, lighting, and particle effects for the game all look amazing. A visual effects supervisor for the game last week stated that one of the goals of the project was to blend gameplay and cinematics, making it so that the two are interchangeable from a player perspective. In this next clip, which features combat gameplay, Robilliard says much the same thing, stating, “We make a big effort to make sure that the game transitions seamlessly in and out of gameplay and cutscenes so that you’re not sure when you are in control or not.”

Players not knowing for sure whether they are in control sounds as if it could be problem when the blasters begin firing. However, being a modern 3rd person action game means players can always tell when enemies will appear, due to the presence of waist-high crates and walls.

Star Wars 1313 still does not have a release date, but I expect the game will not be out until, at the earliest, that magic window all of the recently delayed and announced titles are getting: spring 2013.

  • Star Wars Takes the World’s Money [Infographic]

In case you didn’t know, Star Wars is A. Very popular, and B. A cash cow for George Lucas. Why else do you think he has made 79 remakes of his films? I mean, come on! How many times do they need to release a remastered version of Jar Jar fing up my childhood?

Michael Cerwonka decided to create a Star Wars Infographic that shows how much of a genius George Lucas really is. For him to take the initiave and snag the merchandising rights has allowed him to keep his film franchise firmly in his grasp.

This infographic is featured on Wired.com and they managed to get a comment from the Lucasfilm people aboutwhich character is the most profitable:

“Darth Vader is one of the most popular Star Wars characters across most product categories.”

Translation into basic: Vader Force chokes the other characters.

  • Star Wars 1313 Video Game Announced

E3 is beginning next week and already some big game announcements are being made. Game companies are releasing collector edition pre-orders and bawdy trailers at hyperspeed. Speaking of hyperspeed, LucasArts made what could be the biggest pre-E3 announcement yet. The company has officially announced Star Wars 1313, a new Star Wars video game franchise that will officially debut at E3 next week.

Details about the game are sparse, though GameTrailers.tv was able to interview developers at LucasArts’ San Francisco studio about what players can expect. Players will take on the role of a bounty hunter in “the most dangerous place in the galaxy, 1313.” According to LucasArts, 1313 is located somewhere below the surface of the planet Coruscant. The way the developers talk about it, 1313 is a very dark place filled with crime and gangs. It will be interesting to see whether LucasArts will really make a Star Wars game as mature as they are intimating.

As for the gameplay, 1313 is a third-person “cinematic” action adventure game. The bounty hunter main character (whose identity is being kept secret, for now) will use an “arsenal of exotic weaponry” to track bounties and uncover a criminal conspiracy. LucasArts states that the game will feature “epic” set pieces and fast-paced combat. Also, the player will have little connection to the force, meaning players will be using bounty hunter gadgets rather than sorcery. A visual effects supervisor at LucasArts stated that the developers are trying to unify cut-scenes and gameplay, meaning from a player’s perspective there should be no difference between the two.

“We’re excited to share one of the projects LucasArts has been hard at work developing,” said Paul Meegan, President of LucasArts. “Star Wars 1313 dives into a part of the Star Wars mythos that we’ve always known existed, but never had a chance to visit. We are committed to bringing the best gameplay experience and visual fidelity to life and I truly believe the work we are showcasing at E3 will speak for itself.”

From the look and feel of Star Wars 1313, as well as the bounty hunter protagonist, I’m thinking the game might be something similar to Shadows of the Empire. Could the game be a sequel or prequel to that classic Nintendo 64 game? Could Dash Rendar be the mysterious figure in the picture above? We will have to wait until E3 next week to find out. In the meantime, the first segment of the GameTrailers video below will fill you in on everything there is to know about the game so far.

  • Star Wars Timeline Celebrates First 35 Years [Infographic]

Star Wars is first on our minds and because of that George Lucas is a very rich human being. He is so rich that there is a rumor going around that all he eats is gold and rubies. Ok, I might have made that up, but he is a ridiculously wealthy man. Part of the reason that he is so wealthy is that originally, no one wanted to ditribute “A New Hope” so he was able to secure the merchandising rights to the Star Wars franchise. Now he oozes money.

This infographic from Newsarama.com features a 35 year history of all things Star Wars including some early films like Flash Gordon that had a huge influence on the mind of Lucas. Everyhting is on here like the birth of Ewan McGregor, and the release of the Ewoks: Battle for Endor made for TV movie.

  • Pinky And The Brain Do Star Wars?

Well, kind of. What we have is another take on telling the story of the original Star Wars triology, via the medium of radio. But that’s been done, you say? While that’s true, it hasn’t been done quite like this:

It’s the Star Wars Trilogy like you’ve never heard it before! Join voice actors Billy West, Tara Strong, Maurice LaMarche, John DiMaggio, Kevin Conroy, Jess Harnell and Rob Paulsen as they re-create the magic of the Star Wars films, albeit in their own special way! You never know what you’ll hear when this cast gets together.

If you recognize any of those names, there’s probably a good reason. It’s a who’s who of animated character voice actors doing scenes from the original Star Wars movie, complete in the character’s voices they helped make popular. The performance was done at the Emerald City Comicon almost two months ago, but the video popped last night and today.

Because my description does the voice acting absolutely no justice, I’ll just leave this here for you. Keep in mind, the entire video is an hour and twenty minutes long, meaning if you’re looking for a way to kill time at work on the Friday before Memorial Day, this video is a good way to do so:

As you might expect, the viral popularity of the performance did not escape the notice of Twitter:

  • Samuel L Jackson Should Have Played Darth Vader

Every now and then you stumble across a video on YouTube that should have gone viral and seen millions of views. For some reason this one didn’t even though it’s funny and downright genius. It was posted on YouTube about 2 years ago and since then has been seen around 500k times. Perhaps it was overshadowed by the Darth Schwarzenegger video posted a few month earlier. Both are great.

The video was posted with this phrase in the description – “Get these motherf*ckin Rebels off this motherf*ckin Death Star!” 500k is impressive, but it deserves more.

Here’s the Schwarzenegger version as well. Both are good, so might as well include this one too.

With George Lucas’ tendency to screw with his old movies, its kind of surprising this idea didn’t come along. There is still time to change up Revenge of the Sith to have Mace Windu become Vader instead of Anakin Skywalker. Fans have already pointed out incongruities in the older trilogy and the new one, why not just go all out.

Now is the perfect time to do it. The series is going to be re-re-released in 3D over the next few years, and you never know what Lucas will do. Never forget the addition of Hayden Christensen’s hologram at the end of Return of the Jedi, or the change that shows Han Solo shooting in retaliation, after Greedo fires first. (Because a professional bounty hunter would miss at point blank range, and Hans character really needs to be softened up. He’s a galactic badass, and the only one that can counteract Luke’s constant whining) Sorry, the Star Wars geek came out of me on that one.

Don’t get me started on what he did to Indiana Jones.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic Developer Announces Layoffs

Layoffs, redundancies, or restructuring. Call it what you will, the studio responsible for Electronic Arts’ (EA) flagship MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, has announced it has fired some of its staff.

The announcement came on the official forums for The Old Republic, in a post by Bioware co-founder Greg Zeschuk. The message, attributed to both Zeschuk and Bioware’s other co-founder, Ray Muzyka, confirmed that Bioware Austin has undergone “restructuring,” laying off an undetermined number of employees.

The job descriptions of those let go have not been released, but the message stated they were treated with “dignity, fairness, and respect.” It went on to thank everyone at the studio for executing one of the largest and most stable MMO launches in history. The post then switched tone and began to reassure fans and subscribers that the news did not mean the end of The Old Republic. From the forum post:

Looking forward, the studio remains vibrant and passionate about our many upcoming initiatives for Star Wars: The Old Republic. We still have a very substantial development team working on supporting and growing the game, and we feel we are in a strong position, with your continued involvement and feedback, to continue to build Star Wars: The Old Republic as one of the most compelling and successful online experiences in the world today. There are many strong initiatives planned for cool new content and new features that we’re excited to tell you about in the upcoming weeks and months.

This news comes just two weeks after it was revealed in EA’s fourth quarter fiscal results that The Old Republic had lost 400,000 subscribers over the first few months of 2012. EA’s CEO, John Riccitiello, tried to downplay the importance of The Old Republic to EA, saying that the MMO was not a “top five” franchise for the company. Since the release of Diablo III, game forums for The Old Republic have seen complaints that many of the game’s servers are suffering from low player populations.

What this means for the future of Star Wars: The Old Republic is unclear. Whether the layoffs will affect the quality of future content or slow the pace of content releases remains to be seen. The forum message from Bioware’s founders today ended with a promise to support and grow Star Wars: The Old Republic “over the weeks, months, and years to come.”

  • The Mystery of C-3PO’s Raging Golden Erection

A well-endowed C-3PO is seen here in this 1977 trading card from Tops. For years Star Wars fans speculated on the card’s existence, many believing that it was just a myth. Well, it isn’t.

Some say the reason behind its existence was a disgruntled Topps employee, or a prankster at Lucas Films. But the most likely reason is the timing of the photo and the lighting around his body armor. Either way, the result is clear, and hilarious.

The cards are somewhat rare, selling for $35 – $40 on Ebay. Topps rereleased the card with an airbrush treatment covering the “wardrobe malfunction” after it was discovered.

MTV’s Urban Myth’s did a feature on the C-3PO card a few years back. In it, they reached out to Lucas Arts for an explanation: “It looks like a piece of C-3PO’s body armor wound up in the wrong place, and no one spotted it in the dark background until thousands of the cards were printed.”

The question now is, “Is it functional?”. At webpronews we have covered the concept of robot sex slaves in the future of “sex tourism”. Could C-3PO be the embodiment of that future?
