  • White House Now Requires 100K Signatures for Petition Response, Will Hopefully Weed Out Wacky Secessionists

About a month ago, I said that the White House’s “We The People” online petition site was “ensuring its legacy as a total joke.” I know, that’s pretty harsh. But at the time, it really looked like the experiment in active citizenship was going to burn out. When I made that statement, the site had a whopping 48 petitions that were sitting, unanswered by the White House.

That’s not 48 total petitions. That was 48 petitions that had crossed the 25,000 signature threshold, meaning that by rule they warranted an official response from the White House. 48 (about half of them were crazy secession petitions). Since then, 2 of the 48 have received responses (and one had to do with building a Death Star).

It was abundantly clear that in order to survive and to retain any level of legitimacy, the site had to restructure its signature threshold to make it a little bit harder to garner enough signature to trigger an official response.

Thankfully, the White House has done just that. Starting today, new petitions must receive 100,000 signatures in 30 days in order to receive a response from the administration. That’s up from the 25,000 that clearly wasn’t working, and 20x what was originally required when the site first opened up in 2011.

“When we first raised the threshold — from 5,000 to 25,000 — we called it “a good problem to have.” Turns out that “good problem” is only getting better, so we’re making another adjustment to ensure we’re able to continue to give the most popular ideas the time they deserve. Starting today, as we move into a second term, petitions must receive 100,000 signatures in 30 days in order to receive an official response from the Obama Administration. This new threshold applies only to petitions created from this point forward and is not retroactively applied to ones that already exist,” says Macon Phillips on the White House blog.

So does that mean the White House will be getting to work on those other 40+ petitions that deserve responses?

Anyway, this is the right move. The site is becoming way too big for a 25,000 threshold. It’s probable that eventually, the 100,000 threshold will need to be adjusted. If you give people a voice, no matter how small it is, they usually take advantage of it.

The White House says that participation has grown significantly in just the past two months: 2.4 million new users, 73,000 petitions, and 4.9 million signatures. In two months.

Here’s why the 25,000-signature threshold just wasn’t working:

“In the first 10 months of 2012, it took an average of 18 days for a new petition to cross the 25,000-signature threshold. In the last two months of the year, that average time was cut in half to just 9 days, and most petitions that crossed the threshold collected 25,000 signatures within five days of their creation. More than 60 percent of the petitions to cross threshold in all of 2012 did so in the last two months of the year.”

In total, the site has seen 9.1 million signatures on 141,000 petitions from 5.4 million users since its creation. Out of those 141,000 total petitions, 21 different agencies and departments have offered 162 official responses.

  • White House Responds to Death Star Petition, Doesn’t Support Blowing Up Planets

Sorry John D of Longmont, Colorado and the 34,000+ other who signed the Death Star petition: the White House has responded and the answer is no.

The federal government will not be initiating a program to construct a functioning Death Star, despite the pleas of tens of thousands of Americans. They’ve just published an official response to the November petition that appeared on the We The People online petition site, saying that they share a desire for job creation too, but this isn’t the way.

    Here’s the White House’s reasoning:

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn’t on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

    • The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
    • The Administration does not support blowing up planets.
    • Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

The original petition asked the U.S. government to “secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016.”

The response was written by Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget. It’s cleverly titled “This Isn’t the Petition Response You’re Looking For.”

The White House did highlight some cool space tech that we can be proud of, in lieu of a functioning Death Star.

“Even though the United States doesn’t have anything that can do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, we’ve got two spacecraft leaving the Solar System and we’re building a probe that will fly to the exterior layers of the Sun. We are discovering hundreds of new planets in other star systems and building a much more powerful successor to the Hubble Space Telescope that will see back to the early days of the universe.

We don’t have a Death Star, but we do have floating robot assistants on the Space Station, a President who knows his way around a light saber and advanced (marshmallow) cannon, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is supporting research on building Luke’s arm, floating droids, and quadruped walkers,” said Shawcross.

Last week, the White House responded to another petition, saying that they would not consider deporting British CNN host Piers Morgan for his stance on gun restrictions in the U.S.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic Gets Its First Expansion Next Year

Despite all the TORtanic jokes, the move to a hybrid free-to-play model was the right move for Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game keeps all of its loyal subscribers and is able to attract new players at the same time, but what about the players that left? BioWare might be able to bring them back with the game’s first expansion due out next Spring.

BioWare announced today that The Old Republic’s first expansion is to be called “Rise of the Hutt Cartel.” The expansion brings all the requisite level cap increases, new characters, new planets and other additions that you would expect to find in new content like this.

Getting into specifics, the level cap has been raised by five to 55. With the level increase, BioWare promises more abilities, skill points, gear and other bonuses as you grind to the new cap. The expansion is also adding the new planet of Makeb where the “Galatic Republic and Sith Empire fight for control over a powerful secret.” Finally, the addition of the Hutt Cartel will add more of the fully-voiced story content that TOR was best known for.

The expansion will launch in Spring 2013 for $19.99. Subscribers will be able to get the expansion for half-off at $9.99. Those who pre-order by January 7 will get five days of early access when the expansion launches. Non-subscribers will also become a Preferred Status player if they pre-order the expansion.

It will be interesting to see if this expansion helps BioWare gain more players and subscribers after the game sank earlier this year. If it doesn’t, the game could be in trouble. Disney, the new owners of LucasFilm, has already made it known that it doesn’t intend to pursue core games in the Star Wars universe. TOR launched before the acquisition, but Disney now holds the fate of the latest Star Wars MMO in its hands.

  • Death Star Petition Passes 25,000 Signatures, So You Know What That Means

    Your move, White House.

Among the many pressing issues facing our great nation, the people have rallied together in support of the most pressing one of all: our reckless lack of functioning Death Stars.

A petition asking the Obama administration to gather the resources and begin production of our very own Death Star has passed the signature threshold on the White House’s We The People petition site. Crossing that 25,000 signature barrier means that the White House is forced to issue an official response.

“Forced,” in theory. The White House says that they “will do our best to respond to petitions that cross the signature threshold in a timely fashion, however, depending on the topic and the overall volume of petitions from We the People, responses may be delayed.” So maybe they’ll get to it, maybe they won’t. But at least it’s officially on the list.

Unfortunately, that list has other official responses ahead of it. As you may remember, a flood of secession petitions inundated the We The People site following President Obama’s reelection. A few of those petition actually succeeded in breaking the 25,000 signature threshold. Those petitions have yet to receive a response.

The Death Star petition has its roots in 4chan and received additional promotion from reddit. Here’s what it asks:

Those who sign here petition the United States government to secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016. By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.

As I said yesterday when I told you that the petition was nearing the signature threshold, this petition shows just how off the rails the White House’s online petition initiative has gone. Death Stars, secession – I’m pretty sure that this is pretty far from what they had in mind when they developed the portal back in 2011.

But then again, the White House may have to respond to the people’s desire for a Death Star. Cool.

  • Death Star Petition Nears Signature Threshold on White House Site

UPDATE: The petition has crossed the 25,000 signature threshold.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: In the near future, it’s possible that the White House will actually have to respond to the people’s suggestion that the U.S. Government begin construction on our own Death Star by the year 2016.

That’s all thanks to the We The People online petition site, which has seen its share of publicity recently due to a flood of secession petitions that popped up shortly after the 2012 Presidential election. The White House started the We The People petition initiative in 2011 as a way to “provide a new way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country.”

With the current rules, if a petition reaches 25,000 signatures in one month, the White House is supposed to issue an official response.

Well, this Death Star petition has about 20,000 with two days to go.

The actual petition, which was started on 4chan and further promoted on reddit, asks the Obama administration to “Secure resources and funding, and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016.” Here’s what the body of the petition says:

Those who sign here petition the United States government to secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016. By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.

If it garners another 5,000 signatures in the next two days, the White House will be forced to issue an official response. Well, kind of:

“We will do our best to respond to petitions that cross the signature threshold in a timely fashion, however, depending on the topic and the overall volume of petitions from We the People, responses may be delayed,” says the White House. And we’ve yet to see any official responses for the secession petitions – and a few of those crossed the 25,000 signature threshold.

But we can hope. Part of me sees this for what it is: a bastardization of a serious process. Then again, nobody really thinks these We The People petitions can actually do anything. Also, it’s a petition to build a mf’in Death Star – what the hell am I thinking?

Anyway, some guy already calculated that is would take approximately 833,315 years to even produce enough steel to begin construction of a Death Star. At current prices, it would cost a number with over 15 zeros to make. Then again, the Death Star petition is probably more likely to work than any of those secession petitions.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic Update Spreads Life Day Cheer

Star Wars: The Old Republic, EA’s newest MMO, set records by going from subscription to free-to-play in under one year. Now that the game is free-to-play, BioWare is tasked with adding plenty of extras that can be bought with the game’s new Cartel Coin currency. This week, patch 1.6 for the game went live, bringing with it (according to the patch notes) several new Life Day items.

For those who aren’t aware, Life Day is the Wookie holiday that is celebrated on the same day as Christmas. It was introduced in 1978’s The Star Wars Holiday Special, which is generally considered the most groan-worthy Star Wars content ever released. The Life Day items that will be sold in SWTOR include Life Day robes, a holiday speeder, a tinsel bomb, and Life Day trees.

Aside from the Life Day items, the new patch also contains a new multiplayer Warzone, and new space combat missions. Players have been waiting for the new Warzone, called Ancient Hypergate, and new space missions for months now. EA and Bioware released a trailer for the content to coincide with the patch’s launch.

  • New Angry Birds Star Wars Hoth Levels Out Today

Mobile gamers have already conquered Sand Piggies on the sands of Tatooine, stormed the Death (Pig) Star, and completed their Jedi training on Dagobah. Those eagerly waiting for new frontiers to explore and destroy in Angry Birds Star Wars will have to wait no longer.

Today, Rovio released new levels for their Angry Birds/Star Wars crossover game. 20 new levels will let players take control of the birds during the snowy Battle of Hoth. The content will feature new piggies and pig-styled AT-AT walkers. The levels begin with the imperial invasion, so no wampa cave, unfortunately.

It is also debut of a new bird that was previewed before the game was even released. The Princess Leia bird is equipped with a GFD device that acts as a tractor beam to pull down the evil piggy empire’s contraptions.

Though the content is officially released today, Rovio has stated that it will be rolling out to different platforms over the next few days.

Hopefully Rovio will continue to support Angry Birds Star Wars so that players will be able to crash the cloud city and duel a porcine Darth Vader in the carbonite chamber. Also, a Lando bird needs to happen.

  • Would The Walking Dead Be Better With Lightsabers?

You can take my word for it. The answer is no. The Walking Dead would not be better with lightsabers. What’s wrong with you?

Or, if you need proof, go ahead and watch the video:

    See? Pretty stupid.

If you like videos of lightsabers inserted into popular television shows, you might also enjoy this Game of Thrones one.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic is Now a Free-to-Play MMO

Star Wars: The Old Republic, EA and Bioware’s MMO set in a galaxy far, far away, has officially gone free-to-play. Subscriptions to the game are still available, and provide many of the benefits free players will have to pay for in microtransactions.

Players who choose to play for free can experience all of the leveling experiences for each class in the game, which makes up a large majority of it’s content. After reaching 50, however, things get a bit more difficult. Players will have to pay to access flashpoints and operations, and will be limited in the number of multiplayer matches they can participate in each week. In addition, there are items and armor that can only be used by subscribers or by buying a pass.

Of course, items are also available for asthetic purposes. Armor sets, pets, vehicles, and character animations are all available. All of the purchases will be made through the game’s new Cartel Market using Cartel Coins. The coins are available for purchase with real money on the Old Republic website, but subscribers will get a monthly stipend of them.

In addition to the new items available for purchase, Bioware has added some new content to the game. One of the existing operations, “Explosive Conflict,” now has a new Nightmare difficulty mode. New daily missions are also available on the planet Belsavis, one of which leads to a galaxy-spanning treasure hunt in pursuit of a new HK-51 companion. The new daily missions are not accessible without a purchased pass or subscription.

  • Angry Birds Star Wars Path of the Jedi Trailer Released

Rovio released a new trailer today for Angry Birds Star Wars, featuring an avian Yoda. The video highlights the Path of the Jedi levels, which can be purchased in-game.

Anyone who has already played Angry Birds Star Wars has seen the tempting Path of the Jedi levels, with the crashed slingshot-X-wing on top. After the introductory level, a message pops up, selling the levels for $2. However, Rovio stated in the trailer below that 3-starring all of the other levels in the game will also grant access to Dagobah.

When the Path of the Jedi levels are all beaten, the Luke bird gets his lightsaber upgraded. From the video description:

Once you’ve made it to Dagobah, beat all 40 levels to unlock the green Lightsaber – It’s more powerful than the blue one, and Luke can use it throughout the rest of the game. Yay!

Of course, if you 3-star all of the other levels to unlock the Path of the Jedi, there won’t be much else to do in the game after obtaining the green lightsaber. Players will have to wait until the Hoth update is released for new content. Then the Wampa limb removal can begin.

  • Wes Anderson Takes On “Star Wars”

Wes Anderson Takes On “Star Wars”

What would “Star Wars” be like if Wes Anderson directed it? Quirky and funny with lots of dry humor and oddly lovable characters? More than likely.

The people over at “Conan” decided to see for themselves what it would look like, and I have to say…it’s pretty brilliant. The only thing it’s lacking is a serious amount of Bill Murray.

  • Angry Birds Star Wars Out Today, Cinematic Trailer Released

Today is the biggest day for Star Wars fans since the huge news last week that Lucasfilm was sold to Disney for $4 billion. Rovio has officially launched Angry Birds Star Wars. The game is now available for download for iOS, Android Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows Phone, and Windows 8.

“It’s a banner day for us,” said Peter Vesterbacka, CMO of Rovio. “This is our best Angry Birds game yet, and we’re excited for our fans to finally meet Luke, Leia, and the rest of the gang! But it’s more than just a game launch: we think fans are going to just love the new animated trailer and the Angry Birds Star Wars products, sure to be a big hit this holiday season.”

The game pits the birds (playing “good” Star Wars characters, such as Luke, Han Solo, R2-D2, and Obi-Wan) against the evil piggy empire led by Darth Vader – the “Dark Lord of the Pigs.” Players will slingshot the birds across 80 levels, from the deserts of Tatooine to the trenches of the “Pig Star.” Players can also opt to “train” their skills on Dagobah and forge a new lightsaber for Luke on the “Path of the Jedi,” which is a $1.99 in-app purchase. In addition, the first free update to the game will feature the Battle of Hoth.

“We can’t wait for fans around the world to experience the fun of launching the Angry Birds characters into the Star Wars universe,” said Colum Slevin, head of Studio Operations for Lucasfilm Ltd. “This is the kind of creative partnership that has helped Star Wars remain vibrant and beloved for over 35 years.”

The companies released a cinematic trailer to accompany the launch. It shows the Mos Eisley Cantina scene as imagined in the Angry Birds universe.

  • Angry Birds Star Wars Official Trailer Released

All the current talk about Star Wars is either how Disney will either improve or ruin the franchise and whether Carrie Fischer and Mark Hamill will be cast in Episode 7. Regardless of the future of Star Wars, two things are certain – Star Wars merchandise will continue to sell, and Angry Birds Star Wars will be released on Thursday, November 8.

Today, Rovio, the developers of the Angry Birds games, released the official gameplay trailer for the Star Wars spinoff. It features that classic John Williams score and includes all of the characters announced in the duo trailers last week, including Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, and Obi-Wan. The characters will use lightsabers, blasters, and the force to fight the evil piggy empire in settings ranging from the deserts of Tatooine to the surface of the Death Star.

Unfortunately no new characters were revealed, so it appears the game will not feature an avian version of Yoda, Lando, Boba Fett, or Ewoks. Not yet, at least. If Angry Birds Star Wars is a success (and how could it not be?), it’s almost a given that future expansions of the game will feature characters and settings from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

  • Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Cross Lightsabers in Angry Birds Star Wars

Rovio, the developers of the Angry Birds series, have been releasing preview videos for Angry Birds Star Wars all week long. Each video features a famous Star Wars duo and provides a glimpse of what their characters’ bird-powers will be in the game. For example, the Luke Skywalker bird flails his father’s lightsaber around, while the Han Solo bird fires a ricocheting blaster.

In the preface to the Han Solo and Chewbacca preview released yesterday, I speculated that Ben Kenobi would be the most likely character to show up next, and it turns out that I was right. Today’s preview features Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader, crossing lightsabers one last time in their old age. The video shows that the Obi-Wan bird will, of course, use the force to knock around the evil piggy empire, including the porcine Darth Vader.

It’s Friday, so this is probably the last preview video for the week, but Rovio still has a few day next week to announce characters before the November 8 release of Angry Birds Star Wars. I’m still holding out for Yoda and Lando birds.

Parody Envisions the New Star Wars Director Brainstorm Over at Disney HQ

Now that the Star Wars franchise is in the (hopefully) capable hands of Disney, people are already speculating as to who might helm the next installment, slated for a 2015 release.

This clever parody imagines what might be going on over at Disney HQ right now, as execs scramble to find the right director. Tarantino? Shyamalan? Perry? Bay? At this point, who knows?

  • George Lucas’ Money From Disney Already Earmarked

George Lucas’ Money From Disney Already Earmarked

George Lucas’ monetary worth has long been debated over and speculated on; as the creator of the insanely successful “Star Wars” franchise, he’s been able to line his pockets with gold over the past forty-odd years, and it seems everyone is curious as to just how much cash he has.

With the recent announcement that Disney has bought Lucasfilm–and the astronomical sum that exchanged hands in the deal–it’s estimated that Lucas is worth around $7.3 billion. However, he says he’s not keeping that $4 billion windfall from Disney all to himself, but is donating it to various charities and to the advancement of education.

“I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race,” Lucas said in a statement. “We have to plan for our collective future—and the first step begins with social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt—as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so.”

Lucas said the Disney deal came about because it will ensure that his films and ideas live on for new generations of fans.

“Disney is a huge corporation,” he said. “They have all kinds of capabilities and facilities, so that there’s a lot of strength that is gained by this. I’m doing this so that the films will have a longer life, and so that more fans and people can enjoy them in the future. It’s a very big universe I’ve created and there are a lot of stories that are sitting in there.”

  • Han Solo and Chewbacca Star in the Latest Angry Birds Star Wars Video

We’re now only one week away from the release of Angry Birds Star Wars, and Rovio is rolling out the gameplay videos with haste. We’ve already seen Luke & Leia and R2-D2 & C-3PO take on the evil piggy empire.

Today’s preview showcases Han Solo, played by the yellow bird, and Chewbacca played by a very hairy version of the giant red bird. The Han bird will be able to fire a blaster that shoots ricocheting blaster bolts across the level. The Chewbacca bird will function much as the giant red bird does in other games, using his bulk to smash through obstacles. He does it with a familiar Wookie roar, though, which definitely makes it better.

This is the third day in a rown that Rovio has released a gameplay video for Angry Birds Star Wars. Will there be another duo debuting tomorrow, and if so, who will they be? The easy money is on Ben Kenobi making an appearance, but don’t forget that Lando, Yoda, and the Ewoks have yet to make an appearance.

  • NMA Reveals The First Star Wars Episode VII Trailer

NMA Reveals The First Star Wars Episode VII Trailer

Disney is buying LucasFilm and is on schedule to release a new Star Wars film in 2015. The news was shocking to some, while others welcomed their new Disney overlords. It took a while for everybody to realize that it wasn’t a joke, and are now beginning to ask questions. Who is going to direct the next Star Wars film? Why did George Lucas sell LucasFilm to Disney? Can the franchise be milked more than it already is? The geniuses at NMA have the answers to all these questions and more.

Our favorite Taiwanese news parody group has what they say is the first official Star Wars Episode VII trailer. I would pay good money to see this vision of Star Wars brought to the big screen.

I think we can all agree that a fight to the death between Darth Vader and Iron Man should be the focus of Episode VII. Vader may be dead, but Lucas and company has already ignored enough Star Wars continuity that it wouldn’t matter. Hell, just throw the entire Marvel universe into the Star Wars universe and have Joss Whedon direct. It will bring in a few billion dollars at the box office in the opening weekend.

In all reality, we still don’t know anything. George Lucas has only said that Disney will help expand Star Wars to an even larger audience through the company’s global reach. As for the next film’s director, various ideas have been tossed around including Robert Zemeckis, Gore Vebenski, Tim Burton and M. Night Shyamalan. The latter would be especially hilarious just to see the reaction from Star Wars fans.

  • Angry Birds Star Wars Gameplay Features The Droids

We got our first look at Angry Birds: Star Wars gameplay earlier this week when Rovio revealed the Luke and Leia birds. Now Rovio has revealed another trailer that shows off some Droid gameplay. You’ll find that R2-D2 and C3PO make for good birds.

The first trailer showed the more traditional Angry Birds gameplay taking center stage, but it appears that Rovio will be implementing the design of Angry Birds Space into the game as well. The Droid birds will fly through the gravity wells that Angry Birds Space was notorious for while trying to defeat the pig empire.

It’s unknown what impact if any the recent acquisition of LucasFilm by Disney will do to any future games like this going into the future. During the conference call, Disney said that Star Wars games of the future will be primarily for social and mobile platforms. There’s a good chance that Angry Birds: Star Wars and similar projects will be the norm for years to come.

Angry Birds Star Wars will be available on iOS and Android on November 8. It will come to other platforms later.

  • Who Will Direct Star Wars Episode VII? Moviefone Has Some Ideas

So Star Wars is a Disney property now, and a new movie is scheduled to come out in 2015. That’s really not that far away. Disney must have some ideas about where they’re going to take this thing to get it out by then. Either that or it will be extremely rushed.

There are certainly ideas about the direction the series should go in from fans, but who commands that direction will obviously have an enormous impact on how the film turns out. Who will it be?

Moviefone has some pretty interesting thoughts about it, and drops a slew of possible names, the first being Steven Spielberg, as the head of the new Lucasfilm is longtime Spielberg producer Kathleen Kennedy (in addition to the fact that he has been said to have been the first choice for Return of the Jedi, and is credited as an assistant director on Revenge of the Sith). Moviefone’s Christopher Campbell goes on to say:

However, perhaps more likely is the hire of another director Kennedy has worked with, including M. Night Shyamalan (“The Last Airbender”), Gary Ross (“The Hunger Games”), Simon Wincer (“Free Willy”), John Patrick Shanley (“Doubt”), Robert Zemeckis (“Flight”) or “Captain America: The First Avenger” helmer Joe Johnston, who actually worked as an effects artist on the first trilogy of “Star Wars” films.

Then there are filmmakers in the Disney stable, such as Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland”), Gore Verbinski (“Pirates of the Caribbean”), Joseph Kosinski (“Tron Legacy”), Jon Turteltaub (“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”), Kevin Lima (“Enchanted”), Simon Wells (“Mars Needs Moms” and numerous animated films produced by Kennedy), Joe Nussbaum (“Prom” and, funny enough, “George Lucas in Love”) and the Pixar regulars. Maybe Andrew Stanton could make up for the “John Carter” flop with a similar sort of picture with a greater pre-sold audience? Another interesting possibility would be Edgar Wright, who referenced “Star Wars” a lot in his TV series “Spaced” and who will soon be working with Disney/Marvel on “Ant-Man.” That film is set for 2015 as well, though, so if he was game or gutsy enough he’d have to direct “Episode VIII” or a later film.

It could be any of these people, or it could be somebody else entirely, but Disney is probably going to have to make an announcement sometime in the near future. It’s already almost 2013, which would put the release date at just over two years away. Or maybe the world will actually end in 2012.

Who should it be? Any of those names grab you?

  • Star Wars YouTube Channel Offers “Special” Anakin Skywalker Presentation

The latest to come out of the Star Wars YouTube channel was this clip of George Lucas talking about selling to Disney. He said that when he was making the first film, everybody said it should have been a Disney film.

Not too long before that video came out, the channel put this out – a five minute montage of Anakin Skywalker scenes, dubbed a “special video presentation” of the “stunning journey of Anakin Skywalker — the central figure of the Star Wars saga”.
