  • Star Wars VII Will Hit Theaters on December 18, 2015

In a galaxy far, far, away…

It won’t be long now. The highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII will be coming to a theater near you starting on December 18, 2015. Pre-production for the seventh installment of one the most famous science fiction film collections has already commenced. Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios said, “We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture.”

Episode VII is part of the third planned trilogy. The story would pick up some time after the events of Return of the Jedi (Episode VI). However, as of now, no plot details have been released by Disney.

Here’s a top ten list from WatchMojo.com of their top ten Star Wars Moments:

The film will be directed by J.J. Abrams, the mastermind behind the television show Lost, and director of big budget blockbusters Mission: Impossible III and Star Trek. Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the screenplay for Return of the Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back, will join Abrams in crafting a new script for Episode VII.

If you’re wondering where George Lucas is in all of this, he sold Lucasfilms to Disney for $4.05 billion last October. So it will be a brave new Star Wars world out there, one without its original creator who dreamed up the schematics for the first six episodes and crafted the storyline over the past several decades. However, Lucas will act as a consultant for this film and other future Star Wars projects.

  • ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Release Date: December 18, 2015

When Disney announced one year ago that it had bought Lucasfilm and green-lighted Star Wars: Episode VII, sci-fi fandom was filled with a mixture of hope and dread. Since that time, every whisper of a rumor about the project has been picked apart by Star Wars fans.

Today Lucasfilm officially began the countdown to Episode VII‘s premiere. The movie now has a release date of December 18, 2015.

This date matches rumors from August that the movie’s release date had been pushed back from summer into the holiday season. The date is also the exact same day that Legendary Pictures recently announced for the release of the World of Warcraft movie.

“We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,” said Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios.

Lucasfilm has also announced that shooting on the movie will begin sometime next spring.

Official news about Episode VII‘s production has been steady for the past few months. It was announced just weeks ago that Empire Strikes Back co-writer Lawrence Kasdan will be co-writing Episode VII with director J.J. Abrams. Also made official was the fact that movie music legend John Williams will be returning to score Episode VII.

  • Star Wars Rumor: Episode VII A December Release?

Star Wars Rumor: Episode VII A December Release?

There have been six theatrical releases of the Star Wars movies, and no, this does not count the re-releases that came in the mid 1990s. Aside from continuing the same narrative, another thing these films have in common is that they were all released in the month of May. With the (rumored) news of J.J. Abrams beginning principle filming in the near future, the idea of a May 2015 release remained strong. That idea, however, has come under fire after a convention no-show and a distinct lack of information available. Hell, even Conan O’Brien tried to do something about this lack of Star Wars news.

Here’s another rumor for the pile involving Episode VII’s release date, courtesy of Badass Digest:

Multiple sources have told me that right now Disney and Lucasfilm have December circled on their calendars, with a mid-month release – the 15th – being most likely. That would take Star Wars out of the crowded summer and, more importantly, give JJ Abrams and company a couple more months to work on a movie that’s already running a tighter schedule than most of the other Star Wars films.

Concerning Disney’s busy 2015, Slash Film pointed to six movies that Disney has provided solid release dates for. These include Ant-Man (November 6th, 2015) Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1, 2015), Cinderella (March 13, 2015), Finding Dory (November 25, 2015) Inside Out (June 19, 2015), and Pirates of the Caribbean 5 (July 10, 2015). Apparently, the only 2015 Disney tentpole release that doesn’t have a firm date is the new Star Wars movie.

In analyzing the new rumor, Slash Film points out the following:

Also, a December release date would move Episode VII out of what’s shaping up to be the most crowded, blockbuster summer of all time. Not that the film wouldn’t easily be the highest grossing movie even with incredible competition, but December would also mean it could play well into January and February. That strategy lead Titanic and Avatar to each being the highest grossing films of all time, a goal that’s likely on the minds of Disney executives. The summer release, while more traditional, wouldn’t let them to stay on as many screens for as long.

Again, this is all speculation, and there’s no guaranteeing the rumor will become anything more than that. Considering every other Star Wars release has come out in May, it’s hard to see them deviating, no matter how crowded the 2015 summer lineup is; but then again, some casting news might help alleviate any doubts.

  • ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Named Worst By Fans

Fans of Star Trek have a reputation for being some of the most rabid in all of entertainment. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that when a film in the series is subpar they are not shy about sounding off about it.

During the Creation Star Trek convention in Las Vegas last weekend fans made it abundantly clear that in the entire 50 year span of the franchise they hated no film more than the latest by J.J. Abrams. A writer for Badass Digest noted that “Star Trek Into Darkness was met with boos when it was mentioned, and one guy took the mic to say these reboots shouldn’t even be considered for a list of Star Trek movies.”

The same writer commented that “Star Trek Into Darkness is a bad movie made badly that is also bad Star Trek and, worst of all, a cheap rehash of better things.”

The 2009 reboot, also directed by Abrams, ranked at 6 on the list of 13 feature films, and is generally more highly respected among the Trekkie fanbase. Number 1 on the list went to “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” with little debate. In fact, a major issue with the newest movie was how Khan himself was rebooted and “whitewashed” through the casting of British actor Benedict Cumberbatch (the character is supposed to be on Indian origin).

Lets all hope that Abrams has better luck with “Star Wars Episode VII,” which is slated to be released in the summer of 2015.

  • Star Wars: John Williams Will be Back For Episode VII

For all the praise the Star Wars franchise gets for its technical accomplishments and memorable characters, the one thing the movies wouldn’t be the same without is the music. The John Williams-composed score of Star Wars is now as iconic as anything in movie history, and even critics of the Star Wars prequels agree that Williams’ music was fantastic.

Fans will be happy to learn, then that Williams will be returning to compose the score for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed Williams’ involvement this weekend at the Star Wars Celebration Europe event. Though the announcement could not be entirely unexpected, it is yet another confirmation that a new, real Star Wars movie is on the way.

The 81-year-old Williams, who has won five Academy Awards for his work on movies such as Star Wars, Jaws, and the Indiana Jones movies, is currently working with Star Wars: Episode VII director J.J. Abrams. In the interview below, Williams states that he has not seen a screenplay for the movie yet and that he actually prefers it that way.

“I’m waiting anxiously like the audience around the world to find out what the surprises are and discover what my continuing role is going to be,” said Williams.

Star Wars: Episode VII is currently set for a 2015 release.

  • Daft Punk Excited About Abrams-helmed Star Wars Film

French electronic duo Daft Punk recently sat down with Los Angeles radio station KROQ for a rare interview. During the interview the pair talked about a wide variety of topics, but spent a lot of time discussing their optimism for the forthcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, which will be directed by J.J. Abrams.

Abrams, who has most recently been involved in the popular reboot of the Star Trek franchise, was chosen to helm the newest addition to the Star Wars universe. Reactions among Star Wars fans were, of course, mixed. It appears, though, that Daft Punk have every confidence in the director’s ability to do the saga justice. The duo, which consists of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, told KROQ’s Stryker that they have long been fans of Abrams’s work, and were “really excited” about his work on Star Wars.

Abrams revealed earlier this month that Episode VII is scheduled to begin filming in January of 2014, with an eye toward a 2015 release. Lucasfilm – and their new masters at Disney – have remained extremely tight-lipped about the new movie. While nothing has officially been confirmed, strong rumors have suggested that the principle cast of the original Star Wars trilogy – Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford – will all be reprising their roles.

During their interview with KROQ Daft Punk, who are famously reclusive when it comes to the media, never making any public appearance without their masks, spent time talking about things other than Star Wars, too. The pair revealed that they had learned through friends that former Beatle Paul McCartney is a fan of their most recent album, Random Access Memories, and that they would love to work with former Beach Boy Brian Wilson, though they have yet to gather the courage to approach him.
