  • Star Trek Command Center Built by NSA Chief

About a week ago, ForeignPolicy posted an expose by writer Shane Harris about Lt. General Keith Alexander, the current chief of the National Security Agency. That article painted Alexander as a “cowboy” who was less interested in his obligation to the law and more interested in getting the job done.

“Alexander wants as much data as he can get. And he wants to hang on to it for as long as he can,” Harris wrote. “To prevent the next terrorist attack, he thinks he needs to be able to see entire networks of communications… To find the needle in the haystack, he needs the entire haystack.”

Harris’ descriptions of the general imply Alexander is, in some ways, to blame for the bloated intelligence gathering of the NSA used today. But Alexander’s informational analysis was just as bloated when he ran the U.S. Army’s Intelligence and Security Command and commissioned an architectural firm called DBI Architects build a Star Trek-inspired war room called the Information Dominance Center.

The PBS story on the war room says that Alexander regularly brought his “future allies” down to the IDC, located at Fort Belvoir, VA. PBS quoted a retired officer, formerly in charge of VIP visits to Belvoir, as saying that “Everybody wanted to sit in the chair at least once to pretend he was Jean-Luc Picard.”

For Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald, already embroiled in his own information war with the NSA, this latest revelation was an invitation to do some digging. In his own version of the story for the Guardian, Greenwald appropriately wrote that “any casual review of human history proves how deeply irrational it is to believe that powerful factions can be trusted to exercise vast surveillance power with little accountability or transparency. But the more they proudly flaunt their warped imperial hubris, the more irrational it becomes.”

The following images were obtained by Greenwald from the architectural firm’s website.

  • William Shatner Headlines Salt Lake Comic-Con

Salt Lake City is hosting its first-ever Comic Con this weekend and it is sold out, with over 50,000 tickets sold by the end. Appearances by William Shatner, and a re-teaming of Adam West and Burt Ward, are special highlights of the event.

Shatner and West headlined a one-hour session on the journey each made toward pop culture immortality, adding quips about aging and the host state. West garnered applause with, “The two icons each have bad hips. But look at us, we’re still perfect.”

The pair revealed that they only ever worked on one project together, a 1968 TV movie Alexander the Great, shot in Utah. Shatner played Alexander, West played General Cleander, but the film failed to get picked up as a series. Both had already been playing the roles that made them famous, Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek and Batman in Batman (respectively).

Star Trek premiered on NBC on this day in 1966 and Shatner gave a Tweet-out to the series that gave him his first big break:

Not to be outdone by sibling-Cons, the rest of the SLCC Special Guest line-up includes Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Lou Ferrigno (The Hulk), Henry Winkler (The Fonz), David Prowse (Darth Vader, the body), Dean Cain (Superman) and a host of other sci-fi and fantasy icons.

Some of the celebs, along with SLCC organizers Dan Farr and Bryan Brandenburg, even took time to visit the city’s capitol building and Governor (Pictured: unidentified, Dan Farr, Kevin Sorbo, Gov. Gary Herbert, Lou Ferrigno, Claire Coffee, Bryan Brandenburg).

The weekend actually featured the GEEX Gaming and Electronics Expo, but organizers decided to add the flair—and probably added draw and sales—of designating it a Comic Book and Entertainment Convention.

Shatner is also breaking news with a fourth studio album, Ponder the Mystery, to be released on 8 October and for which he will tour. He joins with musician Billy Sherwood, formerly in the band Yes.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch In “Star Wars: Episode VII”?!

Rumors have recently been spreading around the internet saying that Benedict Cumberbatch may be appearing in the new ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’.

Cumberbatch was originally supposed to be acting in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming film titled ‘Crimson Peak’. He dropped out of being apart of ‘Crimson Peak’, which began being produced about the same time as the up an coming Star Wars trilogy.

When he gave up the offer of working with Guillermo del Toro, no reason was given as to why he had made this decision. Perhaps he left the set of ‘Crimson Peak’ so that he could begin working on a role in Star Wars?

Cumberbatch was in the movie, Star Trek Into Darkness, which was directed by J.J. Abrams. The new Star Wars movie is also being directed by J.J. Abrams. Since they had such a strong bond when working together during the filming of Star Trek, it would be of no surprise if they came together again to produce another movie.

Apparently Benedict Cumberbatch has always been a fan of Star Wars. In a recent interview with Total Film, he discussed both Star Trek and Star Wars, but leaned more toward being a Star Wars fan. “I was much more connected to [Star Wars] as a kid, in the way that a lot of kids are because it’s immediate storytelling, very simple – a beautifully, outrageously simple narrative in a way – and a wonderful three-act melodrama, opera. And I loved them. I really, really loved those films and I always wanted to be Han Solo. Everything Harrison Ford did I just thought was the coolest thing ever – Raiders Of The Lost Ark was very much my upbringing as well,” he told Total Film.

With the production of Star Wars: Episode VII currently being in the works, Benedict Cumberbatch’s announcement pertaining to staring in the movie, could take place any day now.

  • ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Named Worst By Fans

Fans of Star Trek have a reputation for being some of the most rabid in all of entertainment. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that when a film in the series is subpar they are not shy about sounding off about it.

During the Creation Star Trek convention in Las Vegas last weekend fans made it abundantly clear that in the entire 50 year span of the franchise they hated no film more than the latest by J.J. Abrams. A writer for Badass Digest noted that “Star Trek Into Darkness was met with boos when it was mentioned, and one guy took the mic to say these reboots shouldn’t even be considered for a list of Star Trek movies.”

The same writer commented that “Star Trek Into Darkness is a bad movie made badly that is also bad Star Trek and, worst of all, a cheap rehash of better things.”

The 2009 reboot, also directed by Abrams, ranked at 6 on the list of 13 feature films, and is generally more highly respected among the Trekkie fanbase. Number 1 on the list went to “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” with little debate. In fact, a major issue with the newest movie was how Khan himself was rebooted and “whitewashed” through the casting of British actor Benedict Cumberbatch (the character is supposed to be on Indian origin).

Lets all hope that Abrams has better luck with “Star Wars Episode VII,” which is slated to be released in the summer of 2015.

  • Daft Punk Excited About Abrams-helmed Star Wars Film

French electronic duo Daft Punk recently sat down with Los Angeles radio station KROQ for a rare interview. During the interview the pair talked about a wide variety of topics, but spent a lot of time discussing their optimism for the forthcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, which will be directed by J.J. Abrams.

Abrams, who has most recently been involved in the popular reboot of the Star Trek franchise, was chosen to helm the newest addition to the Star Wars universe. Reactions among Star Wars fans were, of course, mixed. It appears, though, that Daft Punk have every confidence in the director’s ability to do the saga justice. The duo, which consists of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, told KROQ’s Stryker that they have long been fans of Abrams’s work, and were “really excited” about his work on Star Wars.

Abrams revealed earlier this month that Episode VII is scheduled to begin filming in January of 2014, with an eye toward a 2015 release. Lucasfilm – and their new masters at Disney – have remained extremely tight-lipped about the new movie. While nothing has officially been confirmed, strong rumors have suggested that the principle cast of the original Star Wars trilogy – Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford – will all be reprising their roles.

During their interview with KROQ Daft Punk, who are famously reclusive when it comes to the media, never making any public appearance without their masks, spent time talking about things other than Star Wars, too. The pair revealed that they had learned through friends that former Beatle Paul McCartney is a fan of their most recent album, Random Access Memories, and that they would love to work with former Beach Boy Brian Wilson, though they have yet to gather the courage to approach him.

  • IRS Star Trek Parody Video Is Hilariously Awful

An IRS Star Trek parody video has prompted a formal apology from everybody’s favorite government agency. Faris Fink, an IRS executive who appears in the video as Mr. Spock, apologized for the video and for some of the IRS’s other excessive spending habits in a hearing on Capitol Hill today.

The video was produced for an IRS training conference in 2010. Another video – a Gilligan’s Island parody – was also produced. The two videos together cost approximately $60,000 to produce. That is, of course, sixty thousand taxpayer dollars. While that may not seem like a lot in the grand scheme of things, the conference for which the videos were produced cost several million. According to Fink, the IRS doesn’t actually know how much the conference cost, but said it could well have been upwards of $5 million.

This is not, of course, the only IRS scandal going on at the moment, nor even the most prominent one. The agency is currently facing intense scrutiny following reports that IRS workers in the agency’s Cincinnati, Ohio office were unfairly giving more intense scrutiny to conservative groups – particularly Tea Party groups – that were seeking tax exempt status.

In his statements on the Hill today, Fink called the production of the video “embarrassing” and said that he regretted it as soon as he saw the finished product. Of course, the fact that the IRS spent $60,000 in taxpayer money on a parody video for a conference is certainly embarrassing enough, but it is not entirely clear whether Fink was talking about the expenditure, or the video itself.

Because to be honest, the video is amazingly, shockingly, spectacularly awful. At just shy of five and a half minutes long, it is one of the most cringe-inducing things you will see on the internet this week (depending, of course, on which parts of the internet you frequent…). While the costuming is bad enough (Next Generation uniforms on the Original Series bridge? Really?) the writing is abysmal and the acting is, well, about what you’d expect from IRS employees. Check it out for yourself below. If you dare…

  • Patrick Stewart Tweets His First-Ever Slice of Pizza

Patrick Stewart is an intriguing man. For all his prestigious acting accomplishments and fame, it seems the X-Men actor had never, until today, eaten a slice of pizza.

The 72-year-old actor today posted a picture to his Twitter account of himself enjoying a slice of pizza. He claims that it’s his first-ever slice of pizza, though the statement is unclear enough that it could just be his first-ever slice of authentic New York-style pizza:

The actor, famous for playing roles such as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, has not yet provided a follow-up tweet to review his meal, or to explain how someone could go over 70 years without trying pizza. Judging from the grease on the paper plate in front of him, however, the slice was probably fantastic.

Stewart is expected to marry his fiance Sunny Ozell sometime this year. The wedding will be officiated by Stewart’s friend and X-Men co-star, Ian McKellen.

  • Bing To Add Klingon Language To Translator To Market ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

Bing To Add Klingon Language To Translator To Market ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

Update: Bing has now made the official announcement.

Bing is reportedly adding the Klingon language to Bing Translator as part of a marketing deal between Microsoft and Paramount, as the studio prepares to release Star Trek Into Darkness.

While we’ve been unable to bring up the language in Bing Translator so far, The LA Times (via Engadget) reports that it is coming today:

The Bing service will translate text written in any one of 41 supported languages — including English, French, Hebrew and Urdu — into Klingon. Fear not, native Klingon speakers: words or phrases written in that language can be translated into the more than three dozen available tongues.

According to the report, Microsoft engineer helped develop the feature, has he apparently speaks Klingon. The LA Times shares a quote from Bing’s Craig Beilinson: “We have people who understand the deep science of linguistics and we also have people who are passionate about the ‘Star Trek’ franchise. This was a labor of love from a lot of different avenues.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Klingon Language utilized by a major search engine. You can still see the Google Klingon homepage here.

  • Leonard Nimoy Races, Sings in New Audi Ad

How do we know that the summer movie blockbuster season has begun? The product tie-in ads are beginning to take over television.

This week a new Audi ad pitted Leonard Nimoy against Zachary Quinto. For those not well-versed in popular culture, Nimoy played the character Spock in the original Star Trek series and movies. Quinto now plays Spock in the re-booted J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie franchise.

Though the ad is not explicitly affiliated or branded with Star Trek, there are numerous references to the show during the nearly 3-minute ad. For example, the actors start out playing a virtual version of three-dimensional chess, and at one point Nimoy recreates his famous death scene from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The music and camera angels employed to show off Quinto’s Audi vehicle are reminiscent of those often used to show off Enterprise ships in Star Trek movies. The ad also perfectly demonstrates why you should never challenge someone who can correctly employ a Vulcan nerve pinch.

Oh, and if you were wondering what bizarre song Nimoy is singing along with during his drive, it’s actually a song Nimoy performed himself in the 60s called “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.” The music video for the song is one of the best things to come out of the 60s:

  • It’s Old Spock vs. New Spock In The Latest Audi Ad

Audi’s latest ad is titled: “Zachary Quinto vs. Leonard Nimoy: “The Challenge”. This features the original Star Trek’s Spock (Nimoy) and the new Star Trek’s Spock (Quinto).

As an added bonus, it also features Nemoy doing his Bilbo Baggins song.

  • Star Trek The Video Game Launch Trailer Released

Movie tie-in video games can generally be dismissed by gamers as cynical attempts to cash in on the hype surrounding the release of a movie. The titles are, most of the time, thrown together and unpolished, pushed onto the market to coincide with the movie release date.

This week, the Star Trek tie-in video game will be released, less than one month before the premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, one of the most anticipated summer blockbusters of 2013. Star Trek The Video Game, however, could buck the trend of terrible tie-ins, if the game’s launch trailer is any indication.

The game features its own story, which isn’t directly tied to the story of Into Darkness. Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the enterprise crew will be facing off with the Gorn, which classic Star Trek fans will be familiar with.

Star Trek The Video Game will also feature characters with different gameplay options, such as Spock’s stealthy ability to use a Vulcan nerve pinch to take down enemies.

Even if all of these elements don’t add up to a great game, they do appear to at least make up parts of a game that had some care put into its development. The game’s developer, Digital Extremes, has attempted to bring something original and fun to the movie tie-in concept, and there’s not really much more gamers could ask for.

  • Zoe Saldana Talks Mental Health, Star Trek

Zoe Saldana Talks Mental Health, Star Trek

Actress Zoe Saldana was rocketed to fame when she starred in James Cameron’s Avatar, and soon after cemented her place in science fiction history by taking the role of communications officer Nyota Uhura in the 2009 reboot of the Star Trek movie franchise. However, her taking over the ground-breaking Star Trek role that was once played by Nichelle Nichols almost didn’t happen.

Saldana is appearing this month on the cover of both InStyle Hair and Latina magazine. The actress spoke with Latina about her recent career, and stated that she “was afraid” to take the Star Trek role and felt “overwhelmed.” From the interview:

“…I thought: ‘Maybe I should just take some time off and focus and just rest?’ But my mom is a Trekkie, and my team was like, ‘Zoe, are you stupid? Don’t let fear immobilize you. This is an amazing opportunity to step into the shoes of an iconic character in an iconic series and it’s in space and you’re a sci-fi buff.’ And I was like, ‘oh my God, who am I kidding? Absolutely. I’ll totally do it.’”

The star also spoke about the rumors of her “meltdown” after Avatar (she called them “completely blown out of proportion”) and the backlash she endured after being cast in the role of singer Nina Simone in a new biopic.

  • William Shatner’s Age Catches Up To Him In His Latest Fight With The Gorn

For an 82-year-old, William Shatner still looks incredibly young. That being said, it seems that his age is finally catching up to him. Despite that, he still holds his own against one of his oldest adversaries – the Gorn.

All of this is for the upcoming Star Trek: The Video Game. The story takes place between 2009’s Star Trek reboot and the latest film – Star Trek: Into Darkness. In the video game, Kirk and Spock must fight off a Gorn invasion.

Of course, this video only raises our collective hope that William Shatner will make a cameo in the newest game. He could prove an invaluable ally to future Kirk and Spock what with his incredible acting and charm.

  • 693 Star Trek Episodes Are Now Free on Hulu Until the End of March

693 Star Trek Episodes Are Now Free on Hulu Until the End of March

In honor of William shatner’s birthday (he’s 82 today), Hulu is looking to kill your productivity this month by making nearly every Star Trek episode free until the end of the month.

This includes Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Star Trek: Voyager.

In all, this is 693 episodes. And you have just under 10 days to catch them while they’re still free.

    You do the math.

“Resistance is futile. Almost as futile as controlling a population of tribbles,” says Hulu.

The last limited time deal that Hulu ran was a little more up my alley. On Valentine’s weekend, Hulu opened up over 800 Criterion Collection films for free.

  • Star Trek Into Darkness Gets a New Teaser

Star Trek Into Darkness Gets a New Teaser

Paramount Pictures today released the newest teaser for its upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 reboot of the iconic science fiction franchise. The new preview portrays the movie as an action thriller meant to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, rather than the often cerebral Star Trek TV series or the character-focused original-timeline Star Trek movies.

“The goal for this movie was definitely to up the ante as much as we could,” Abrams says in the trailer. “The action in this movie, the scale of the movie is light-years beyond what we did in the first movie.”

Zoe Saldana, who plays Uhura in the new Star Trek movies, backs up Abrams by saying, “This is the kind of film that 3D was made for.”

Though these types of statements may be exactly what Star Trek fans don’t want to hear, a movie of that sort will be well-positioned for summer blockbuster hit status. If Star Trek fans ever want to see a continuation of Gene Roddenberry’s universe in TV series form again, a successful movie franchise could go a long way to making that happen.

  • New Star Trek Video Game Footage Shows Stealthy Spock

Earlier this week, Namco Bandai released an action-packed trailer for the upcoming Star Trek video game based on the rebooted J.J. Abrams movie franchise. It appeared to imitate

A new look at the game released today shows that the game won’t be completely a cover-based shooter (though it still appears much of it will be). Brian Miller, SVP at Paramount Pictures narrates the video and talks a bit about the co-op aspect of the game that allows players to take on the role of both Kirk and Spock.

It turns out that the co-op characters will have different play styles and abilities. While Kirk focuses on honing his phaser skills and appears to play very similarly to a Mass Effect 3 Commander Shepherd, Spock is able to use stealth and perform Vulcan nerve pinch takedowns to defuse situations.

Since the game is scheduled to come out on April 23 – one month before the release of Star Trek Into DarknessStar Trek fans shouldn’t expect it to have any spoilers about the upcoming movie. There will be plenty of Gorn blasting, though. Also, if the the developers have any sense they will have included a crafting system that allows players to create their own Gorn cannon.

It’s still unknown whether the Star Trek video game will be fun or a classic thrown-together movie tie-in. The animations and graphics don’t seem spectacular, but the ability to stealthily perform a Vulcan nerve pinch is at least evidence that there will be one good thing in the game.

  • Watch Gabe Newell, J.J. Abrams Talk About Films And Gaming

During the annual D.I.C.E. conference last week, a number of gaming luminaries spoke on the state of the industry. These talks were all posted online with the exception of one that didn’t show up until this week. Unfortunately, it was the most important talk of all – a chat between Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Valve’s Gabe Newell.

Gamers, and Valve fans in particular, can now rejoice as the talk has been posted online in its entirety. Learn how two of the most famous men in their respective fields compare storytelling in film and gaming. You’ll also get to see the announcement that shook the world – Valve collaborating with Abrams on Half-Life and Portal films:

  • Star Trek The Game Might Just Impress In April

Star Trek is more popular than ever thanks to J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the series in 2009’s Star Trek. Now the sequel – Into Darkness – is almost upon us, and you know what that means, right? Yep, another hastily put together movie tie-in that will most assuredly disappoint.

I realize that such an early assessment is really unfair, but Gearbox Software had more than five years to get Aliens right. They flubbed that, so forgive me if I don’t think Digital Extremes can make a competent Star Trek game in a year and a half.

Oh wait, this actually looks kind of good. Sure, it doesn’t look like classic Star Trek, but it looks a helluva lot like J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek universe. That’s only a good thing in my book as his universe is far friendlier to what video games need to succeed as adaptations.

Maybe we can give Digital Extremes the benefit of the doubt here. After all, the studio is responsible for one of the best games of 2012 – The Darkness II. The developer proved it could take a license and craft an awesome game around it then. What’s to stop them from doing it now?

Of course, an adaptation of a comic book gives developers more freedom than a film adaptation, but being allowed to craft their own story that’s not tied to the events of either film may just help it along. I don’t think any of us will have any complaints as long as it doesn’t end up like Aliens: Colonial Marines.

  • New Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer Pulled By Paramount [Updated]

Update: We initially embedded the trailer, but it now says Paramount has removed it. Sorry.

There’s a new theatrical trailer for the forthcoming Star Trek Into Darkness (directed by J.J. Abrams), which was first shown in theaters with The Hobbit. Enjoy.

Here’s a teaser that came out earlier this month.
