Marlo Thomas Center Opens at St. Jude

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital this week officially opened its Marlo Thomas Center for Global Education and Collaboration. The 38,000-square-foot center is part of the organization’s new $200 million St. Jude facility in Memphis Tennessee.

According to St. Jude the center will be used to coordinate research, education, and treatment of children with cancer. The center includes a new medical library, two auditoriums, and several meeting rooms to support St. Jude postdoctoral and graduate fellows.

“One of the guiding principles of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has always been to share discoveries with the global research community to speed progress against childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases,” said Dr. James Downing, president and CEO of St. Jude. “This center is a brick-and-mortar extension of that philosophy, offering researchers at St. Jude and around the world an innovative space to learn, to share, and to develop the next big advances in science and medicine.”

The center is named after Marlo Thomas, the former TV actress best-known for her role as Ann Marie in the TV show That Girl. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded by Thomas’ father, Danny Thomas, in 1962. Marlo Thomas has been the organization’s spokesperson since 1991 and now serves as its National Outreach Director.

“This building is the celebration of a generation and I am proud to stand as a symbol for all of us who heard the stories as children about how our immigrant grandparents came to this country and carved out a life for their families with their own hands,” said Thomas. “And how they stood shoulder to shoulder with my father as he envisioned this great hospital and became, as he called them, an army of ‘proud beggars’ for the world’s sickest children. That this new center bears my name is a tremendous honor to me, and in accepting it, I vow to continue to be a proud beggar on behalf of children around the world.”

  • Ashley Tisdale Loving Married Life, In No Hurry to Start a Family

Ashley Tisdale can’t say enough good things about married life. However, don’t expect the pitter-patter of little feet anytime soon.

Tisdale talked to E! News Wednesday at the ShoeDazzle Cares benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital charity event about life with new husband, Christopher French.

“It’s great, it doesn’t feel any different but it is,” Tisdale said. “We wake up every morning and I’m like, ‘Hi, husband’ just to able to feel somewhat different because I married my best friend and it’s been so amazing.”

“We’re very natural with each other, so it’s been great, it’s been awesome,” said Tisdale, who married her musician hubby on Sept. 8.

The High School Musical alum shared about the “shocking” experience of referring to French as her husband for the first time.

“You’re not used to it,” she said. “But it’s also so exciting…I have a husband, that’s awesome.”

Fans hoping the actress will have children quickly will be disappointed. The 29-year-old actress said they have no plans for children anytime soon, preferring to accomplish a few things before adding on to their family.

“Not for a while,” she laughed when asked. “We’re both so busy with work!”

Tisdale has very personal reasons for supporting the St. Jude charity — her grandmother and aunt both passed away from cancer.

“It’s a tribute to my grandmother’s passing,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “And when I chose the charity, they said they would love for me to actually spend some time at the charity before I give them any money, which I thought was really admirable.”

  • Ashley Tisdale Teams With ShoeDazzle Cares

Ashley Tisdale has been enjoying her life as a newlywed, but now she is ready get back to reality, to reach out, and give back in a big way.

Her life is great right now. She says of her married life with Christopher French of Annie Automatic, “It’s great! It doesn’t really feel like anything has changed even though it has. It’s like I’m married to my best friend.”

Ashley Tisdale is spreading the love now by teaming up with ShoeDazzle Cares, a charity initiative, to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s hospital.

Tisdale selected a black ankle bootie, the sales of which will benefit the hospital.

There is a reason Ashley Tisdale picked a boot, besides the fact that it’s currently boot weather.

“I’m such a boots person,” she said. “I love how it has multiple straps, and since it’s all-black, it goes with everything. It’s easy to pair with anything like an over-sized sweater and leather leggings.”

The charity is close to her heart for many reasons, but one is really personal. Her grandmother and her aunt both lost their lives to cancer.

She said of her choice, “It’s a tribute to my grandmother’s passing. And when I chose the charity, they said they would love for me to actually spend some time at the charity before I give them any money, which I thought was really admirable.”

The experience she had at St. Jude’s really opened Ashley Tisdale’s eyes to the charity’s urgent purpose.

“To see what they do on a daily basis is an amazing thing,” she said.

“They pay for everything from housing and food, and everything is so that the child will get better. When I visited, I was like, ‘I’ll do whatever it takes.’ It was so heart-breaking.”

    What a great charity!
