  • YouTube’s New Ad Model: Channel Sponsorships

YouTube is rolling out a new ad model option for 96 YouTube Channels. Rather than selling television style ads to certain demographics, they will now sell full sponsorship for certain YouTube channels. The ads include display, overlay and pre-roll; so basically they will cover the entire page with an ad preceding the video. The annual price tag for sponsorship is around $4 to $10 million.

YouTube will cover cost of production for certain channel producers, and the producers themselves will share equally in advertising revenue, once YouTube recoups the original investment. Production costs range from a few hundred thousand to a few million for most channels.

YouTube has struck deals on the new advertising scheme with brands like Toyota, GM, AT&T, and Lowes. As part of the deal, buyers will also be investing in other videos, with their ads appearing in non-channel videos as well. The channel sponsor ads comprise just 20% of the total ad campaign revenue for investors, with the other content being run on the rest of YouTube’s videos.

Unilever will be sponsoring Young Hollywood Network channel for a reported $10 million. Toyota is to sponsor Cafe Mom, Kin Community and Mom’s View for $10 million, and GM will sponsor a package of automotive channels including Red Bull’s action sports channel for $5 million. Chrysler, AT&T, and Lowes also have agreements, but details on those deals have not been released.

YouTube is asking brands to get on board for sponsorship of groups of channels as part of a package deal. According to AdAge, a one year exclusive contract in the music and pop culture categories would cost as much as $62 million a package. Sports would cost $40 million, and automotive would run you about $16 million.

This new advertising model comes after a recent redesign of the channels look for YouTube. As more attention is being shifted from television to online video entertainment, YouTube is trying to stay ahead of the game with improvements to their channels offering, giving a more professional feel to original content and offering new ad opportunities to investors.

  • Major “Celebrity Apprentice” Sponsor Pulls Out Over Trump Sons Hunting Scandal

Donald Trump’s sons are causing him quite a bit of trouble this week with something that happened a year ago.

While on a trip to Africa with the company Hunting Legends, the younger Trumps–Donald Jr. and Eric–posed for numerous photos beside animals they had killed, which included an elephant, crocodile, kudu, civet cat and waterbuck. When the photos were released recently, public outrage over the hunting trip began immediately and spread to all facets of social media, causing Eric and Donald Jr. to issue statements and angry tweets in their defense. Jr. claims that the brothers both grew up hunting with their family and that the meat from their victims didn’t go to waste as it was distributed to members of local villages.

@Cyn90 u think we wasted the meat? It fed a village for a month.(image) 2 days ago via Twitter for BlackBerry® ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@meowmers11 that’s your opinion. I didn’t know u decided what’s justifiable. For me if the meat is eaten its all good.(image) 2 days ago via Twitter for BlackBerry® ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The reasoning behind their actions doesn’t interest some people, however, including a major sponsor of their father’s show “Celebrity Apprentice” (a reality show on which both brothers appear). Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis says that his ads have already run on this season of “Celebrity Apprentice”, but that doesn’t mean he will support the show with another penny.

The businessman told TMZ today that he is “totally disgusted by the [hunting] pics I have seen and was surprised to see them … Money is spent but wow I’m really shocked.”

Trump Sr. claims that he is against hunting and has never gone himself, and was planning to talk to his sons about their decisions when he got the chance. Perhaps sooner rather than later would have been a good idea.

  • Charlie Sheen Wins at Twitter

    Charlie Sheen Wins Twitter
Say what you will about the current, slightly mystifying Charlie Sheen fad, but one thing’s for sure: With all that talk of winning, Sheen’s certainly doing it with Twitter.

Not only did Sheen break one of Twitter’s follower records by gaining a million followers in one 24-hour period (plus one hour, making it 25 and change), he’s also going make stacks of cash from his 140-word gems of wisdom. As indicated, Charlie Sheen is indeed winning and it looks like joining Twitter, allowing the sycophantic crowd to gather around him, might be his best move yet — “F-18, bro” rants aside.

According to an AdRants post, Sheen has signed a sponsored tweets deal with Ad.ly, a company that specializes in garnering celebrity endorsements in social media. The going rate for Sheen Twitter madness? 1 million dollars a year.

Clearly, it pays to be out of control, especially when you are a superstar. One wonders, however, why someone like Lindsay Lohan wasn’t as social media savvy as Sheen so obviously is? Probably because she joined Twitter before she went on her highly-publicized wild streak. The lesson for the celebrity portion of society is obvious: If you’re going to freak the hell out all over the place, make sure you join Twitter after the fact, and not before.

Charlie Sheen would refer to that as the “winning strategy,” and if you need further proof, just look at the millions — in both followers and money — he’s already racked up since joining Twitter on March 1st.

Update: Sheen also announced plans for his upcoming book, Apocalypse Me on Twitter. He also defined what the title meant, and it’s about what you’d expect.

    “Warlock Latin for WINNING.”
