  • Spelling Bee Controversy Emerges After Knaidel Win

You may recall last week when Arvind V. Mahankali won the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the word “knaidel.” What you may not know is that some are now saying that he didn’t spell the word correctly at all.

The Atlantic Wire reports that Yiddish linguists say that “knaidel,” which finds its origins in the dialect, is actually spelled “kneydl.” Of course, the spelling offered up by the Yiddish experts is just one of many spellings for the word that has taken on many forms over the years.

As for the spelling bee staff, they say that Mahankali correctly spelled the word as it appears in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. By all accounts, he’s still the champion.

Mahankali became somewhat of an Internet sensation last week when his winning the spelling bee took off on YouTube and other social sharing sites. His celebration, in particular, was singled out for being very appropriate for a boy his age.

Oh, and if you were wondering, Mahankali will not be coming back for a repeat performance next year. He says that he’s done with spelling bees and now wants to focus his efforts on physics.

  • Knaidel! Spelling Bee Winner Has Priceless Reaction

13-year-old Arvind V. Mahankali is your 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion, after correctly spelling the word K-N-A-I-D-E-L in the 15th round.

Mahankali, an 8th-grader at Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School in Queens, New York, has said that his favorite word he’s spelled so far is “sardoodledom” (well-made works of drama that have trivial, insignificant, or morally objectionable plots). I have a feeling that knaidel is about to take over that title.

Check out the enthusiasm and elation that Mahankali shows when he finally wins and the confetti begins to fall.

Jubilation! Well, can’t blame the kid for feeling relieved. I’m sure it’s a lot of pressure. Plus, it’s not like he didn’t expect to win. Mahankali had been working his way up to that moment, finishing tied for 9th in 2010, tied for 3rd in 2011, and 3rd in 2012. No need to jump around. Acting like you’ve been there before. Respect.

Oh, and if you were wondering, knaidel is a type of dumpling, eaten especially in Jewish households during Passover.
