  • Amy Pascal May Be On the Chopping Block at Sony Over Hacks and Leaks

Amy Pascal of Sony has found herself in the hot-seat lately over hacks and leaks out of her company. While the hacking of copies of entire films is one thing, it was the presumed-confidential information in emails that caught lots of attention.

Amy Pascal is co-chairman of Sony Pictures. She is known in Hollywood for having an instinct when it comes to picking movie projects that will become hits. Pascal started as a secretary in the film business, but clawed her way to the top by picking winners and never taking crap.

When the Sony hacking attack started, email systems were compromised, Twitter accounts were hijacked, and entire movies were stolen and leaked onto file-sharing sites. Films like Fury, Annie, Still Alice, Mr. Turner and To Write Love on Her Arms are all out there for anyone who knows how to use Bittorrent with a VPN. This is a serious blow. Back in the summer, Expendables 3 got leaked like that and box office receipts were never up to expectations.

Experts suspect that the hack was perpetrated by North Korea, which is angry over Sony Pictures’ recent release, The Interview. The film protrays Seth Rogen and James Franco as assassins who kill Kim Jon Un. The Korean government has called the film “a blatant act of terrorism and war” and would lead to “merciless” retaliation. The tech characteristics of the hack have features that North Korea has used in cyber activities before, leading to the suspicion that they are behind this one.

But Pascal’s emails are what have been coming back to bite her.

Pascal joked about whether President Obama prefers movies about freed slaves and other black themes. That led to an apology from her:

“The content of my e-mails to Scott were insensitive and inappropriate but are not an accurate reflection of who I am,” Pascal said in a statement. “Although this was a private communication that was stolen, I accept full responsibility for what I wrote and apologize to everyone who was offended.”

But other embarrassing things came out of the Sony hack. One is that men are paid more than women at Sony, even in the films. Jennifer Lawrence was paid less than her male co-stars for American Hustle. And Amy Pascal herself is the only woman at Sony who is paid more than $1 million in salary.

Movie producer Scott Rudin called Angelina Jolie a “minimally talented spoiled brat.” Rudin was also involved in the emails about President Obama.

Sony had collected lots of information about employees’ health issues, including premature births, cancer, and liver problems. Aliases of certain actors were revealed, as well as spoiler news about upcoming films.

In the end, the question is whether Amy Pascal will still have a job at Sony when the dust settles.

    Deadline asked this week:

“Is it possible their track records for quality, thoughtful films and collaborations with top talent can be set aside and that Rudin and Pascal could be tarred and defined by momentary lapses and poor attempts at humor that paint them as being racially insensitive, in e-mails meant to be private? … People in town are wondering how long Pascal and the studio can, under the guise of not dignifying the damage caused by these stolen documents, continue to weather an unprecedented media assault without saying anything.”

  • Adam Sandler Movies Are Terrible, And Even Sony Pictures Knows It

When it comes to Adam Sandler movies, we are a long ways away from a time and place where anyone rushed to the theater to see his latest movie.

In fact, it’s hard to argue that anyone who turns up to an Adam Sandler movie now isn’t doing it (1) for nostalgia reasons and (2) the sincere hope that THIS TIME he’ll be “back”.

Because everyone else has moved on from believing that Sandler will ever again put out a movie worthwhile.

    That includes Sony Pictures.

As it turns out, Sony’s recent hacking scandal has gifted us far more than leaked movies. Some of the documents show that members of the studio are perfectly aware that Adam Sandler’s movies are terrible—and have been for some time.

One unnamed employee complained, “Although we manage to produce an innovative film once in awhile, [w]e continue to be saddled with the mundane, formulaic Adam Sandler films.”

Another said that it was or should be a goal for Sony Pictures to “stop or reduce support for areas that have no more value (Sandler movies, DVD).”

    Yikes.

Even though this latest leak is slightly embarrassing for Sony, it is a very useful bit of information for the average moviegoer.

You see? Movie studies DO put out crap movies featuring actors long past their prime. They know it, but must pretend that they don’t in the hopes that you trust them enough to give them your hard-earned money.

But now that we know that the Emperor has no clothes, will moviegoers make use of this information.

That is to say, if Sony Pictures went out of their way to avoid spending any money on Adam Sandler and his terrible movies, does that mean you should elect to do the same?

Sounds like a pretty good idea at this point, as Adam Sandler will probably never go back to even being his brand of funny.

It also raises the question of just how many terrible, stale, and generic movies do studios opt to knowingly release each year.

  • Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum Reuniting for ’23 Jump Street’?

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will join forces again. A third film in the 21 Jump Street saga has been given the greenlight by Sony Pictures.

Rodney Rothman has been hired to write the, tentatively titled, 23 Jump Street script. Rothman, former head writer on the Late Show with David Letterman from 1998 to 2000, was one of the screenwriters for 22 Jump Street.

Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Neal Moritz, Hill, and Tatum are set to produce the latest Jump Street film. However, Lord and Miller, who directed 22 Jump Street, have not yet committed to directing the latest film. Hill and Tatum have also not yet confirmed that they will star in it.

21 Jump Street is based on the 1980s cop drama that starred Johnny Depp. The series lasted for five seasons, but Depp only appeared in four of them. In 21 Jump Street, a group of fresh faced cops go undercover at various high schools and colleges to stop youth crimes, such as the selling of narcotics and robberies. The 21 Jump Street movie completely reinvented the concept of the television series by turning it into a comedy, and creating characters totally unlike the ones on the show.

The Jump Street movies received favorable reviews from moviegoers and critics alike. 21 Jump Street made over $200 million at global box offices in 2012. This summer, 22 Jump Street made over $300 million, with only a $50 million budget.

The credits sequence of 22 Jump Street mocked the possibilities of more sequels. But factoring in the financial success of the first two films, and their positive reception, it seems like a smart decision to make a third movie.

  • Edward Snowden Story Coming to Silver Screen as Sony Buys Rights to New Glenn Greenwald Book

One of the most compelling, and still unfolding stories in years will hit the silver screen in the coming years, as reporter Glenn Greenwald’s just-published book, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U. S. Surveillance State, has been picked up by Sony Pictures.

“Edward Snowden’s explosive revelations have raised important questions about the role of government in protecting its citizens and the balance between national security and personal freedom. We are extremely proud that Michael, Barbara and Glenn chose Sony to bring this riveting story to the big screen, and believe that Glenn’s account of this incredible international event will make for a gripping and unforgettable film,” said Doug Belgrad, President of Columbia Pictures.

It’s been nearly a year since Greenwald wrote his first story on the NSA’s secret spying initiatives, with the help of leaked documents from former contractor Edward Snowden. Since then, Snowden documents continue to be released, revealing more and more information on the extent of the surveillance state in the U.S. and abroad and sparking a national dialogue on the issue.

His book, No Place to Hide, focuses on not only the true story behind the Snowden leaks, but also Greenwald’s analysis on the implications of the revelations. It was only released worldwide on Tuesday, and Sony has already announced its intentions to turn it into a film.

“I’m very happy to be working with Amy Pascal, Doug Belgrad, and the team at Sony Pictures Entertainment who have a successful track record of making thoughtful and nuanced true-life stories that audiences want to see. Growing up, I was heavily influenced by political films, and am excited about the opportunity to be part of a political film that will resonate with today’s moviegoers,” said Greenwald.

According to the New York Times, it took a while for the film to land with Sony Pictures, as many potential buyers were hesitant to take on such a hot-button topic, especially one where the story is far from over. Snowden is still living in Russia, and is wanted by the U.S. government.

On Tuesday, Greenwald also released over 100 new pages of Snowden documents.

Last year, Greenwald announced that he would be leaving The Guardian. His new venture, The Intercept, is now live.

  • Leonardo DiCaprio Is the Latest Rumored Steve Jobs

Leonardo DiCaprio Is the Latest Rumored Steve Jobs

Out with the Bale, in the with the Leo?

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the actor/director duo that Sony may snag for the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic is none other than Leonardo DiCaprio and Danny Boyle, the same team that brought you the movie The Beach back in 2000. This new high-powered combination would replace that previously rumored pairing–Christian Bale and David Fincher.

THR says that Sony Pictures is in talks with Boyle, who has in turn approached DiCaprio.

Just last week, we were still talking about a The Social Network reunion for Sony’s Jobs film, with director David Fincher signed on to direct a script already penned by Aaron Sorkin. That feel apart, apparently, because Fincher was reported to have demanded too much money and too much control over the marketing of the film. Once again, THR claimed that Fincher’s “excessive demands for compensation and control” were seen as “ridiculous” by the studio.

Fincher was reportedly demanding that Christian Bale be given the Steve Jobs role, but Bale was never officially attached to the project.

This Steve Jobs movie, whose concept was engendered around the same time as that other Steve Jobs movie starring Ashton Kutcher, has had a harder time hitting production. We learned about the film, which is based on Walter Isaacson’s bestselling biography, way back in 2011–and Sorkin only turned in his completed script a few months ago.

Other than this rumored role, DiCaprio is currently attached to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s next film, The Revenant. Boyle is signed on to direct Porno, based on a novel by Trainspotting‘s author Irvine Welsh.

  • RoboCop Gets A Crowdsourced Movie Remake

RoboCop Gets A Crowdsourced Movie Remake

Are you disappointed in the new RoboCop movie? Don’t like how they managed to ruin your childhood with a PG-13 rating and a very unfamiliar and overtly “modern” looking Robocop and unfaithful storyline?

    How about something more absurd?

Our RoboCop Remake  is a crowdsourced remake of the original 1987 version of RoboCop that smushes the work of 60 scenes made by 50 amateur and professional filmmakers. The movie not only has direct shot-by-shot remakes but includes scenes of puppetry, baby actors, hand-drawn and 3D animation, drag, two musical numbers, modern dance, and a ton of re-scripting. Ten actors play the main role as the seemingly bumbling cyborg conflicted with the dealings of his humanity and the dystopian futuristic world around him.

Despite its extreme absurdity, filmmakers followed a small outline that doesn’t completely derail from the story of the original movie.

“Filmmakers were told which plot points to make sure they hit,” producer David Seger said.

The following is a clip from the movie… and I warn you, it might be one of the hardest scenes you will ever watch. For those that would rather read than watch (and I don’t blame you), Robocop encounters a crime in progress: two sketchy hoodlums attempting to rape a curly haired blonde in the middle of the night. The rapists hold the woman hostage, but Robocop uses his advanced targeting technology to shoot through her dress and hit the groin of the perpetrator. It mirrors the original scene in the first RoboCop (1987) movie, but with a twist: two more damsels in distress show up along with a plethora of rapists with their danglers dangling out of their trousers; Robocop goes on a penile blasting shooting spree. It’s extremely graphic and not safe for life (NSFL):

The movie is free to watch.

  • Netflix Loses Out as Sony Pictures Stays with Starz

Netflix Loses Out as Sony Pictures Stays with Starz

It looks like Netflix’s interest in Sony films wasn’t strong enough to shake things up.

Starz and Sony Pictures Entertainment have just announced an expansion of their previous deal that will see Starz remain the exclusive home for Sony Pictures theatrical releases through 2021. The old deal saw the same agreement through 2016.

Starz has been the exclusive pay-TV home for Sony Pictures’ films since 2005.

“Starz has been a terrific partner and we are excited to be extending our relationship with them through the 2021 slate,” said John Weiser, President, U.S. distribution for Sony Pictures Television.

Recent reports suggested that Netflix was interested in grabbing Sony films for its streaming service. When asked about it during January’s earnings call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said that his interest in Sony content was “just like it was for Disney. It’s strong.”

“We’re interested. We’ll see how it works out,” Hastings said.

In December, Netflix inked a huge deal with Disney to become the exclusive source for Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and Marvel theatrical releases, inside the pay-TV window, starting in 2016.

Back in September of 2011, Netflix and Starz were unable to come to an agreement to keep Starz Play content (which included many Sony films) on the service.

  • Lulz Security: Two Hacking Suspects Plead Guilty to Computer Crimes

Lulz Security, a group of highly-skilled computer hackers who operate under the motto, “The world’s leaders in high-quality entertainment at your expense”, was recently dealt a blow when two individuals linked to the organization pled guilty to numerous computer crimes. Two other suspects who were arrested around the same time pled not guilty to the charges. According to British police, high-profile Lulz Security members T-flow and Topiary are counted amongst those currently in custody.

Ryan Cleary, 20, and Jake Davis, 19, admitted to officials that they, along with other fellow hackers, had plotted to attack numerous government, media, and law enforcement websites last year. According to reports, the group, which is an offshoot of the hacker collective Anonymous, was behind the penetration of the Sony Pictures website in 2011. Additionally, the group also claimed responsibility for hacking into the PBS website and posting a story about fake news story about Tupac Shakur’s posthumous life in New Zealand.

However, following an announcement which claimed the group was to retire, Lulz Security allegedly made their way into websites for newspapers owned by News Corporation, during which they falsely reported owner Rupert Murdoch’s death.

Following the PBS incident last year, the group set forth on a hacking rampage, leaving a trail of compromised websites in their wake, including Britain’s Serious and Organized Crime Agency, InfraGard, and Arizona Department of Public Safety. Their reign of cyber terror came to an end when the FBI discovered the group’s leader, Sabu, was FBI informant Hector Xavier Monsegur. The revelation soon led to the arrest of a number of Monsegur’s cohorts.

  • New Footage In Australian Trailer for Amazing Spider-Man

There’s over a month to go until the retelling of the first chapter of Spider-Man’s life comes back to the big screen as Sony apparently figures fans need a new introductory story into the life of everybody’s favorite web-slinger once every 10 years. I mean, they have to think of all the Twitter-using teenagers who are too young to appreciate Sam Raimi’s origin story, right? Could it be that Sony is just trying to hang on to the rights to Spider-Man, now more than ever as Marvel’s movie-making department is riding the wave of Avengers success?

Cynicism aside, there is a new trailer for the new Spider-Man origin movie that comes out on July 3, and because this one was aimed at the Australian audience, there’s some new footage the American trailers have yet to include, courtesy of Topless Robot:

There’s are some really critical eyes pondering over each piece of Spider-Man content that get released, and as a self-proclaimed movie geek, I thoroughly approve. Granted, the only criticism Sony will consider is the opening day bottom line, but nevertheless, the criticisms are valid for those of us who want a great Spider-Man movies. Because Topless Robot’s “SPIDER-CONS” observations are similar to my own, I’ll share there’s:

  • That one horrible webslinging shot
  • The skateboarding (really? Really?!)
  • All the parent shit
  • That football bullshit at the end
  • While I’m actually more impressed than I care to admit concerning the webslinging, I do agree with the final three criticisms, especially dealing with Peter Parker’s parents. All I can offer here is much like Venom, Sony’s commitment to the “Ultimate Spider-Man” storyline is unfortunate. Bringing in something of an emo Spider-Man does not inspire me, but I’m probably in the minority because it’s easy to see just how successful this movie is going to be. Fourth of July all to itself? That almost guarantees a massive opening-day box office.

  • Spider-Man Viral Content Showing Up Around the Web

Although it doesn’t come out until July 3rd, that hasn’t stopped Sony from trying to take away a little bit of the Avengers hype to apply to the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, starring James Garfield. From the looks of it, the title for summer movie king is going to come down to The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spider-Man. All things considered, because of the lack of a 3D TDKR, Christopher Nolan’s creation might just lose to characters from the Marvel Comics universe.

It’s just too bad Marvel doesn’t have control over perhaps their most well-known title.

As for Sony’s viral marketing efforts for The Amazing Spider-Man, there are a couple of items worth mentioning. First, is an image of Peter Parker and his parents, because it’s clear Sony is committed to bringing the Ultimate Spider-Man storyline to the big screen, all so they can keep control of the Spider-Man rights. The image has shown up on a number of movie blogs, although, it apparently was first found on the Seven WebHeads Facebook page:

    (image)

If you didn’t notice, take another look at younger Peter Parker’s right hand in the image. It’s as if he knew what his destiny was. The other piece of viral marketing news concerns the official launch of the OsCorp Industries website. For those who aren’t aware, the Marvel Wiki describes OsCorp as:

OsCorp Industries, often called simply OsCorp, is a weapons manufacturer based in New York near New York City. Oscorp was founded by the Osborn family and was eventually run by Norman Osborn who wanted to pass it onto his son Harry.

If the Osborn name sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the last name of the Green Goblin, aka, Norman Osborn. Naturally, this is the same family that started OsCorp. Here’s a screenshot of the website’s index page:

    (image)
    Click for larger image

If you click the larger image link, you’ll notice there’s an image of chemical bonds as its background, giving fans even more insight into the company’s purpose and the role it will play in the movie. Apparently, Dr. Curt Connors, aka, the Lizard, is an employee of OsCorp when an experiment caused him to lose his arm. This, in turn, pushed Dr. Connors to create the regeneration syrum, which is based on the same biology that allows lizards to regrow their limbs. The result of these experiments is the movie’s antagonist, the Lizard.

Does this new viral content increase your hype level for Spider-Man, or is it already high enough you don’t need anymore content?

  • Amazon Signs Multi-Year Agreement With Sony To Expand LoveFilm Catalog

Today, Amazon announced a new deal with Sony Pictures Television to expand the content for LoveFilm.

“Our latest major content agreement means we’ll be able to exclusively offer our members world-class content from Sony Pictures,” said LoveFilm CEO Simon Calver. “The number of recent high-profile deals we have secured means we are able to keep expanding the service, offering our members high-quality films and TV and the ability to watch as much as they want for one low monthly price.”

  • Is Sony Pictures Trying To Help Re-Elect Obama With Bin Laden / Seal Team 6 Movie?

One of the hottest projects in Hollywood is the upcoming untitled Bin Laden / Seal Team 6 movie. The film tells the story of the raid that successfully killed the 9/11 mastermind, Osama Bin Laden. Deadline is reporting that the film will open on October 12, 2012, which is the same release strategy used on The Social Network, which also premiered in early October.

As you would expect, some are questioning the timing of the films release, as it hits theaters less than a month before the presidential election. A message board poster at IMDB even compared the movie with Hitler-esque propaganda.

Do you think the Bin Laden / Seal Team 6 movie should be released before the election? Tell us what you think.

It does appear that Sony Pictures, the company distributing the film, is trying help Obama’s re-election bid, as they hosted a fundraiser for the President back in April. At the time of this writing, Sony is the only major studio to hold a political fundraiser this campaign season, according to The Weekly Standard.

Douglas Urbanski, a Hollywood producer and conservative radio talk show, calls the release date “very, very deliberate.” It should be noted that Urbanski was a producer for The Contender, a 2000 political film that sympathizes with a sex scandal-plagued Democrat and demonizes a conservative Republican member of Congress. That film was released October 13, 2000, only a mere month of way from the presidential election. Urbanski tells TWS, “It was without a doubt a deliberate attempt to influence the election“.

So it appears that Hollywood trying to sway voters just before an election is nothing new, so why is the Bin Laden / Seal Team 6 movie such a big deal?

Maureen Dowd, an op-ed columnist for The New York Times – Sunday Review, shares her thoughts on the films release date:

The White House is also counting on the Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal big-screen version of the killing of Bin Laden to counter Obama’s growing reputation as ineffectual. The Sony film by the Oscar-winning pair who made “The Hurt Locker” will no doubt reflect the president’s cool, gutsy decision against shaky odds. Just as Obamaland was hoping, the movie is scheduled to open on Oct. 12, 2012 — perfectly timed to give a home-stretch boost to a campaign that has grown tougher.

The moviemakers are getting top-level access to the most classified mission in history from an administration that has tried to throw more people in jail for leaking classified information than the Bush administration.

It was clear that the White House had outsourced the job of manning up the president’s image to Hollywood when Boal got welcomed to the upper echelons of the White House and the Pentagon and showed up recently — to the surprise of some military officers — at a C.I.A. ceremony celebrating the hero Seals.

Earlier today, Representative Peter T. King, who is also chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, called for an investigation into the White House’s cooperation with Hollywood filmmakers over the film. Essentially he wants to know what the Obama administration divulged about the raid, while helping the screenwriter do his research.

White House spokesman Jay Carney was quick to respond to King’s investigation requests, calling them “ridiculous“, he went on to say, “I would hope that as we face the continued threat from terrorism, the House Committee on Homeland Security would have more important topics to discuss than a movie.”

Director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal of the project released the following statement, disputing King’s comments as well:

Our upcoming film project about the decade long pursuit of Bin Laden has been in the works for many years and integrates the collective efforts of three administrations, including those of Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama, as well as the cooperative strategies and implementation by the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency. Indeed, the dangerous work of finding the world’s most wanted man was carried out by individuals in the military and intelligence communities who put their lives at risk for the greater good without regard for political affiliation. This was an American triumph, both heroic and non-partisan, and there is no basis to suggest that our film will represent this enormous victory otherwise.

News of the films release has people tweeting, as always.
