  • Derek Jeter Could Be Doping, According To Bayless

Derek Jeter has shown quite an improvement in his game recently, so obviously he must be jacked up on something.

That’s the gist of what Skip Bayless said on Wednesday, when he suddenly decided to ruminate on the fact that Jeter was considered “washed up” not that long ago and is now showing more promise at the age of 38 than he did last year.

“I am shocked by what I’m seeing from Derek Jeter right now. They all said he was washed up,” Bayless said. “All of a sudden, this man has turned 38 years of age in June and already he has more hits than he had last year. … I’m seeing a whole new guy this year from last year … Are you kidding me? You would have to have your head in the sand or your head somewhere else not to at least wonder, ‘How is he doing this?’ ”

You might say Bayless is just leaping to the conclusion many others have leapt to, especially since there have been so many athletes found guilty of doping in the past year or two. The difference is, he has a televised platform on which to make those statements, unlike everyone else. And although Jeter’s numbers are considerably better than they were last year–he has twice as many hits–one can’t just start throwing accusations around.

Of course, Bayless backpedalled and said he wasn’t accusing Jeter of anything, he just thinks the situation is suspect.

“I am not saying he uses a thing,” Bayless said. “I have no idea. But within the confines of his sport, it is fair for all of us, in fact you are remiss, if you don’t at least think about this.”

Jeter, aside from being irritated, seemed dumbfounded that Bayless would cross that line.

“This is a first for me, man,” Jeter said. “I don’t know what to tell you … What do you want me to say? I ain’t getting involved with this, man. You can say whatever you want to say now, huh? There’s no repercussions.”

  • Deron Williams Goes 57 Kinds of Crazy, Twitter Rejoices

Last night, Deron Williams of the New Jersey Nets went on an absolute scoring frenzy against the hapless Charlotte Bobcats, scoring 57 points, the most by an NBA player this season. Williams, a dynamic point guard who has already helped the United States win a gold medal in the 2008 Olympic Games, is perhaps the lone bright spot on a dismal 12-26 Nets team, and last night, it showed.

    57 times.

Williams hit the NBA’s season high in scoring on a variety of jump shots and three-pointers. He also feasted on the free throw line, going 21-21. The rest of his shooting stat line is not quite as perfect–16-29, 4-11 from behind the 3-point line–but it’s the bottom line that counts, and in this case, not only did Williams set the season high for points in a single game, he also set the New Jersey Nets franchise record for most points scored by a Nets player in a game.

One enterprising YouTube user–who also appears to be someone who can sit through no defensive effort NBA games–has put together a video of all Williams’ baskets, save his many trips to the free throw line. I mean, while 21-21 from the free throw line is impressive, it doesn’t make for the most enthralling highlight video:

As with all things NBA, Twitter’s reaction to Williams’ scoring outburst quickly became a trend, one that’s still going as of the time of this article. The reactions are about what you’d expect when someone goes off like that, starting with some typical hatred from Skip Bayless:

Tomorrow 10E, ESPN2, Stephen A will try to convince me Deron Williams now NBA’s best PG. Just b/c scored 57 for 12-26 team vs. 4-31 team?(image) 12 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Naturally, Skip tries to ignore anything that doesn’t come from a front-running team, but I hope someone asks Skip the following: Yes, the Bobcats have the worst record in the league, but how many other point guards dropped 57 against them this season? Just because the teams in question aren’t apart of the NBA’s elite doesn’t in anyway diminish Williams’ outburst.

At least not to me. Apparently, however, I may be in the minority:

Deron Williams scores 57 points against the Charlotte Bobcats, which is the equivalent of scoring 20 points against an actual NBA team.(image) 14 hours ago via Echofon ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

How many times have deron williams and CP3 been to the finals don’t worry I’ll wait. Rondo been twice and they been in the league longer smh(image) 37 minutes ago via UberSocial for BlackBerry ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

So the fact that Rondo played on better teams doesn’t enter the equation? Or is basketball now an individual sport? There was, thankfully, some praise as well:

It’s about time Deron Williams got the respect he deserved. He’s been a top 2 point guard for a while now.(image) 45 minutes ago via Echofon ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Ummmm Deron Williams had 57 pts ummmm wow!!!(image) 12 hours ago via UberSocial for BlackBerry ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Deron Williams drops 57. Wow.(image) 13 hours ago via TweetDeck ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Notice Palmer didn’t try to take anything away from Williams’ performance? Too bad Bayless can’t take any lessons from his contemporaries.

  • LeBron’s Plaxico Imitation Gets ESPN Riled Up; Twitter Responds to ESPN

Some background: Plaxico Burress, for those who don’t know, is a wide receiver for the New York Jets. It’s Burress’ first year with the Jets following a stint in prison, which he received for shooting himself in the leg at a New York City nightclub. All-in-all, that incident has to go down as one of the most brilliant moves ever made by a professional athlete.

Anyway, last Sunday, when the Jets played the Buffalo Bills, Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson imitated the Burress incident after he scored a touchdown, which actually led to Johnson receiving a $10,000 fine for his antics. The celebration in question:

Fast forward to a celebrity flag football game held by LeBron James, and the Burress celebration rears its head again, this time, courtesy of King James himself:

And now, as is normally the case when LeBron James does anything, reaction is blowing up. It started on ESPN’s First Take and has since moved to the Twitter masses, which has not one, but two trends devoted to the reaction of James’ Plaxic Burress/Stevie Johnson celebration. Oddly enough, very little of the reaction tookJames to task. Instead, most of the responses are aimed at Hugh Douglas and Skip Bayless, today’s hosts of First Take, and for their ability to “hate” on LeBron James:

So pretty much according to Skip Bayless, @KingJames isnt allowed to leave the house until he wins a championship 50 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Skip Bayless esque Bron hate aside, he’s the best all around player in the league. But you’re foolish to trust him in clutch situations… 19 minutes ago via twicca · powered by @socialditto

Wow, Hugh Douglas and Skip Bayless sound like idiots. so LeBron can’t play flag football because he’s not in the NFL? #dumb 48 minutes ago via TweetCaster for Android · powered by @socialditto

Hugh Douglas don’t feel good bout trending! We’re only talking about how dumb u looked talking bad about Bron playing flag FB. 29 minutes ago via Echofon · powered by @socialditto

Dear Hugh Douglas.. You don’t have a ring either dummy! Stop tryna get famous by hating on Lebron like @RealSkipBayless did! 35 minutes ago via Echofon · powered by @socialditto

Hugh Douglas just came off as one salty mf…how hard you think @KingJames was laughin when he watched that 38 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

It’s a weird world we live when LeBron James, one of the most criticized athletes of our time, is treated as a sympathetic figure because the people going after him are doing so in a buffoonish manner. To be honest, my expectation was one that saw LeBron being pilloried across the social Internet. To see the opposite happen, that is, people attacking his critics, is not normal behavior for the Internet crowd.
