  • Wedding Hall Owner Shot in Oheka Castle Parking Lot

The owner of Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York was shot Monday in the property’s parking lot.

Gary Melius was entering his car when a gunman disguised in a mask attacked him. The 69-year-old succumbed to a gunshot to the head.

A 911 caller reported hearing the shots around 12:30 p.m.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the palace owner had already been rushed to the hospital by a relative.

The shooter or the motive behind the shooting has yet to be verified.

Melius is said to be in stable condition following surgery Monday night.

The Associated Press provided some background information that could possibly be a lead in the case.

In 2013, Melius was engaged in a controversial election lawsuit involving Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale:

The district attorney found that Dale had instructed officers to arrest a 29-year-old Roosevelt man, who had testified in an unrelated case that he had been paid to collect signatures for a third-party candidate. Melius, a supporter of the third-party candidate, then contacted Dale seeking to have the young man investigated. The young man was arrested on an outstanding warrant while riding a county bus on Oct. 5.

Dale soon after turned in his resignation when the “district attorney found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.”

Melius, who lives in the castle, purchased and repaired the abandoned estate in 1984. He then sold it, but repurchased the property in (image)2003.

The palace was built in early 1919 and was previously the home of financier Otto Kahn. After Kahn’s death in 1934, the 443 acre estate served as the location for health care purposes and military job training.

After Melius reclaimed the property as his own, he turned it into a party venue for political conventions, fundraisers, and photo shoots. It has recently become the go-to-spot for celebrity wedding ceremonies.

The 127-room mansion was also turned into a lavishing hotel. Thirty-two rooms are used as guest rooms and suites.

As the second largest private home in America, the Oheka Castle is now valued at $30 million.

  • Jason Berryman, Former Iowa State Player, Found Dead

Ex-Iowa State Football Player Jason Thomas Berryman was found dead on Wednesday in his East Texas home.

Succumbing to multiple gunshot wounds, the body of the 28-year-old former Cyclone player was found by family members who were just so happening to be visiting someone else in the area.

There is no official indication to why Berryman’s death took place but police chief Joe C. Hall says that they’re in pursuit of several leads.

    According to ESPN:

“Berryman played during the 2003 and 2005 seasons at Iowa State…in 2003, during his freshman year, he was the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year and an All Big 12 honorable mention. He recorded 110 tackles along with three sacks, and was named a freshman All-American.”

Berryman’s sport career involved a lifestyle of run-ins with the law including arrests and jail time, which led to his removal from the Cyclone team in 2005. In 2008, he was arrested in Iowa with yet an additional charge.

However, his lifestyle never overshadowed his achievements on the field.

According to spokesman for the Iowa State’s athletics department, Mike Green, he told ESPN that in the 2005 Houston Bowl Berryman accomplished “72 tackles that year and led the team with 7.5 sacks.”

“He was a difference maker on defense, and I know that he’s going to be missed by the Cyclone family,” Green said.

The Cyclones tweeted their condolences to the family:

According to a tweet posted by Twitter user Keith Murphy, Berryman is not the only Cyclone player who has lost his life:

  • Felon Shoots Himself in the Penis, Charged with Firearm Possession

The next time you take an old firearm out of the closet in hopes of reselling it for some extra cash, you might want to make sure it works before leaving the house. Furthermore, when you’re fiddling with the pistol to see if everything’s a-okay, make sure that the gun isn’t loaded beforehand. And should you discover the piece comes packaged with ammunition, then, for the love of God, don’t aim it at your penis. Chances are you might need that later.

36 year-old felon Tavares Donnell Colbert decided it was time to part with his weaponry, a good idea considering those convicted of federal crimes aren’t allowed to possess firearms. So, in theory, Colbert was doing the right thing by selling the item. Unfortunately, things went awry when he attempted to inspect the weapon before selling it for a tight wad of cash. While pulling the slide back on the piece he was preparing to sell, his finger accidentally hit the trigger, sending a bullet straight into the happy spot nestled between his legs.

In a panic, Colbert drove himself to the hospital for treatment. Although the state of his organ is currently unknown, reports indicate the felon was arrested for possessing a firearm, which only adds salt to the proverbial wound. Considering he was on his way to properly dispose of the weapon — that’s what he claims, anyway — Colbert’s pride and dignity, as well as his reproductive system, must be feeling a little wounded right now. Then again, perhaps this is just poetic justice. After all, you don’t become a felon by being the nicest person on the planet.

Colbert was booked at the Oklahoma County jail, where I’m sure he’s the butt of several unflattering, off-color jokes. Let this be a lesson to those of you who are looking to part with your collection of firearms: Don’t test the weaponry with the barrel aimed directly at your dangly bits. There’s a very good chance the gun could go off, resulting in a brand new opening you could have easily lived without. No man benefits from extra pee holes.

What’s bizarre about the whole “shooting yourself in the crotch” scenario is that this isn’t the first time someone has accomplished such a remarkable feat purely by accident. In 2011, a man in Phoenix, Arizona attempted to look cool by tucking his girlfriend’s pink pistol into the waistband of his jeans. When the gun went off, his penis took a permanent vacation.

Even little kids understand that taking a shot to the groin isn’t a good time. For example, when someone kicks you in the penis, you’re going to get injured. Injured bad.
