Shark Attack Victim Speaks About Her Ordeal

A woman who had a chunk of her calf bitten off by a shark off the coast of Florida earlier this month shared her experience of the attack Friday.

Amy Tatsch — a mother of six — was attacked on May 15 while on a family outing to Melbourne Beach, in Florida.

Although it is unknown what type of shark attacked the 38-year-old, Tatsch said her doctor estimates the shark was about 7 feet long based on the bite radius.

“(I) can’t get up and around, but it’s so much nicer to be home and be able to be outside,” Tatsch said.

Tatsch spent two weeks in the hospital undergoing multiple surgeries to repair a severely damaged Achilles tendon and calf resulting from the shark attack that occurred while she was boogie boarding with her brother.

“We caught a couple of waves. He caught one and I drifted down a little farther with the current so I was a little farther away and the next wave that was coming up, I was ready,” she said. “I kicked off with my right leg to give me some momentum to ride in and that’s when I got bumped.”

Tatsch said her calf was within a few inches of being taken off completely.

“It was a really hard bump and then seconds after I felt my leg being torn and then I felt the motion of something big swimming away,” she said.

Tatsch’s brother and other beachgoers had to bring Tatsch back to shore after the attack because there are no lifeguards stationed in the area.

The United States averages 16 shark attacks per year, with one fatality every two years.

  • Shark Attack Victim’s Husband Speaks About Incident

Rob Armstrong knew something was wrong.

A bird came out of nowhere and swooped down on him, almost as if it were trying to warn him of the grave danger he and his wife Christine would soon be in.

It was shortly afterwards that Armstrong and his swimming group noticed a large whaler shark heading in their direction.

    No one panicked.

The group simply tightened their swimming formation and headed back to the safety of the beach. Once ashore, the sense of relief was palpable.

“We thought everything was safe and we just hugged each other,” said Armstrong. “Then we found that Chris wasn’t in the change rooms.”

Rob Armstrong hadn’t been concerned about his 44-year-old wife because his 70-year-old swimming buddy had seemed the more likely target of the predatory animal.

Realizing that Christine Armstrong had not made it to land, members of the swimming group quickly took an inflatable rescue boat out to where the shark had been sighted.

It was then that Rob Armstrong and the others made the heart-breaking discovery: His wife had likely been devoured almost whole during a horrific shark attack.

Armstrong believes that Christine experienced a “quick death” and didn’t suffer.

“The shark was such a size and it’s consumed her basically completely,” he said, “She wouldn’t have even known it happened.”

It has been reported that only the victim’s swimming cap, goggles, and scant human remains were recovered from the water. What little was found is scheduled to undergo forensic testing.

Authorities are still trying to locate the rest of Christine Armstrong’s body.

Tathra Beach, the site of the incident, was briefly closed. It has since been re-opened to the public with the support of the Armstrong family.

Rob Armstrong insists that his late wife died doing something that she loved. He’s also confident that she will be missed by many.

“Chris only knew one way in life and that was love, and everyone loved her.”

  • Shark Attack Victim Escapes Great White

Shark Attack Victim Escapes Great White

Shark attacks, it seems, have become more and more common in recent years. Where once we laughed at the idea of a giant dorsal fin sliding through the water (after the initial queasiness that “Jaws” induced, obviously), now it’s a very real possibility every time one goes to the beach. One Cape Cod man found that out the hard way.

Chris Myers was swimming with his teenage sons when suddenly he felt crushing pain in his lower legs and was pulled under.

“Suddenly, something came up between them. It had a large dorsal fin,” eyewitness Anne-Marie Corner said.

Myers said he managed to get away and began swimming with his son J.J. towards the shore, but became very dizzy and knew he was losing blood. Harrowing 911 calls have been released from that day, which contain the panic and fear that shrouded the beach once onlookers realized what was happening. J.J. said it didn’t really hit him until they made it up on the beach.

“I heard him scream and turned around, and saw the back and the fin of the shark up out of water,” he said. “At that point it hit me when it was happening. But at the same time, I thought that none if it was real. It really seemed like a movie. None of it seemed real until I was on the beach.”

Perhaps the scariest part of the story is that scientists in the area believe Myers was bitten by a great white. He was lucky to escape with his life, and says it will take him a while to work up the courage to go back in the water, no matter how much he loves that beach.
