    Google Algorithm Testing – Search Giant Calls for Help Detecting Scrapers

    Google announced that it is testing algorithmic changes for scraper sites – blog scrapers in particular. The company is calling on users to help them.

    “We are asking for examples, and may use data you submit to test and improve our algorithms,” the company says on a “Report Scraper Pages” form, found here.

    Google’s head of web spam, Matt Cutts, tweeted about the new initiative:

    This testing comes after months of iterations of Google’s Panda Update, designed to improve the quality of search results, though there has been no shortage of complaints about scrapers ranking over original content in that time.

    The testing also follows a recent, big refresh of Google’s spam submission process, discussed here.

    This past week, Google shared an interesting video, providing an inside look at the search algorithm tweaking process. While no earth shattering information was necessarily contained, it did provide a rare visual glimpse into the process. Watch it below.

  • Google Introduces List Snippets in Search Results

    Google announced a new kind of snippets it will be showing on search results pages now. These snippets will appear on results for sites that are list pages.

    “Snippets—the few lines of text that appear under every search result—are designed to give you a sense for what’s on the page and why it’s relevant to your query,” says product manager Raj Krishnan. “This week we started rolling out snippet improvements for pages that contain lists; results for these pages will now reflect the structure of the page, rather than just showing two lines of text.”

    “If a search result consists mostly of a structured list, like a table or series of bullets, we’ll show a list of three relevant rows or items underneath the result in a bulleted format,” he adds. “The snippet will also show an approximate count of the total number of rows or items on the page (for example, “30+ items” in the screenshot below).”

    Google says it will be rolling out the snippets globally over the next few days.

    This is the second type of new snippet we’ve seen Google launch in the last week or so. They recently announced the launch of rich snippets for music, allowing webmeisters to markup pages using the music markup to allow search results to display song info in the snippet.

    The feature launched with MySpace, Rhapsody and Reverbnation taking advantage.

    Google says it will continue to improve snippets in different ways.

    Yahoo: These Steve Jobs-Related Searches are “Off the Charts”

    Earlier, we looked at some searches Yahoo expects to see big spikes in based on its search data. Now, the company has provided us with more data about Steve Jobs-related search activity that it’s already seen.

    “Searches for ‘steve jobs’ are up 1,079% in the past 7 days on Yahoo,” a spokesperson tells WebProNews “Searches are split evenly between males and females.”

    “Searches for ‘apple rumors’ are up 8,161% in the past 7 days on Yahoo,” he adds.

    That’s saying something because apple-related rumors have been a hot topic prior to Jobs’ announcement of his resignation.

    Yahoo says the following searches are “off the charts” on Yahoo, meaning searches that received little to no searches the week/month before and are now gaining interest:

    Yahoo Talks Expected Steve Jobs-Related Search Trends

    Not that it’s any surprise, but lots of people have been looking for Steve Jobs-related info since he announced his resignation as the CEO of Apple. Key phrases were all over Google Trends, and Yahoo has reached out to WebProNews sharing what they expect to see spiking on Yahoo, based on data from its search data team.

    “We sift through billions of Yahoo! searches to uncover trends, burning questions, popular personalities and hot ideas,” the team says. “Yahoo! has been extremely successful in sifting through searches for trend-spotting, historical insight, forecasting projections, and big-picture analysis.”

    Yahoo says that it expects continued spikes in searches related to:

    • Steve Jobs Family – searches on his kids, wife, etc.  Also maybe author Mona Simpson, who is his sister.
    • Pixar – and other non-Apple achievements
    • Job Titles : Chairman of the Board, CEO of Apple, Probably questions about what a CEO does, maybe a couple of other positions too…
    • Tim Cook – users will wonder about him, his history, biography, etc; also speculation on how he’ll do (at least there’s a lot of speculation on Twitter and Facebook)
    • Steve Wozniak
    • Pancreatic Cancer – Speculation and rumors about his health will be one of the biggest themes.  This will include searches on “pancreatic cancer symptoms”.  Also expect searches on other celebrities who had pancreatic cancer (Patrick Swayze, for instance).  Likely also questions about pancreatic cancer survival rate – oh, and causes of pancreatic cancer.  Maybe also searches on liver transplants.  Should note that on Facebook and Twitter another theme is people who have lost loved ones to pancreatic cancer making comments about the situation.
    • Apple Stock – should be a big theme in search
    • Apple Products – users might wonder about how this news will affect particular products in development (upcoming iPhones; iPad 3…)
    • Apple History – searches on the Macintosh, how the company started, etc; maybe even that famous Mac commercial (the 1984-themed one)
    • News and Blogs – especially Apple-centric blogs and tech blogs; MacRumors, etc
    • Photos – users will want to see recent photos of Steve Jobs; likely interest in some videos too
    • Comments on the News – users seem to be in the habit now of looking for celebrity commentary (especially tweets) about buzzy events; in this case we’ll probably see interest on comments from tech leaders, too.
    • Writing to Steve Jobs – I have this suspicion that some users will ask how they can contact Steve Jobs to send him their… sympathy, their get well wishes
    • Thanks – big theme on Twitter; people just thanking Steve Jobs for all he’s done

    Yahoo says it also expects to see a big increase in questions related to Steve Jobs.:

    • I’m expecting we’ll see searches on “is steve jobs dying” and many variations
    •   “who is ___” – esp. “who is tim cook”; we’ll also see “who is steve jobs” searches
    • “who will replace steve jobs”
    • “why did steve jobs resign” and variations
    • “what will steve jobs do now” – I saw this in a Facebook thread, so I expect it in search, too. 
    • Users unfamiliar with his health history.

  • Google Announces +1 Button E-Commerce Partners

    Google says it has been working with Bazaarvoice and PowerReviews to make it easier for online retailers to get the +1 button on their product pages.

    As you may know, Google has launched new sharing feature for the +1 button, essentially turning it into Google+‘s version of Facebook’s “like” button. Before, clicking +1 told Google that content would make for good search results. Now, it allows users to share content with their circles of friends too.

    Google is already pushing the potential benefits this can have on online retail.

    “We’re excited about the +1 button because it brings these personal recommendations to a place where many purchase decisions start — the Google search results page,” says Google Strategic Partner Manager Brian Lam. “Adding +1 buttons to your product pages makes it easy for your customers to recommend the products they love on your site with a single click. And thanks to recent improvements to the +1 button, they can take the conversation even further by sharing your products right away on Google+.”

    “We’ve worked with Bazaarvoice and PowerReviews to make it even easier to get the +1 button on your pages. Both companies have extensive experience in social commerce, and can help you develop the right strategy for implementing +1 buttons on your site,” says Lam. “Looking for a couple examples of retailers using +1 to help their products stand out on Google search? Jockey (working with PowerReviews) and Golfsmith (working with Bazaarvoice) have already added +1 buttons to the product pages on their sites.”

    Bazaarvoice is enabling clients to implement the +1 button through its social platform.

    “The next evolution of social brings our friends and peers into every decision we make, and we’re excited to partner again with Google to allow consumers to interact with leading brands through search in ways never possible before,” said Brett Hurt, founder and CEO of Bazaarvoice.

    PowerReviews Uses Plus One Button

    Google’s +1 button is available to PowerReviews customers as part of its core ratings and review product.

    “Google’s +1 represents an important step in the evolution of social commerce, because it gives retailers a way to capture the enthusiasm their customers have for their products and broadcast it across the web,” said PowerReviews CEO Pehr Luedtke. “Perhaps most importantly, this isn’t social simply for the sake of social, it’s a way for retailers to drive real business results by leveraging the power of recommendations made between friends and peers.”

    Of course you don’t have to go through either Bazaarvoice or PowerReviews to implement the button. You can simply install the code yourself, but for those using these platforms, it should be even easier.

    Google tweaks its search algorithms over 500 times a year. You may have already known that, but Google is sharing a new video today designed to give people a “deeper look” into how Google makes “improvements” to its algorithms.

    I don’t think everyone would agree that they’ve all been improvements, as we see complaints about this every day, but Google makes a lot of changes aimed at improving search results, nevertheless.

    “There are almost always a set of motivating searches, and these searches are not performing as well as we’d like,” says Engineering Director Scott Huffman. “Ranking engineers then come up with a hypothesis about what signal, what data could we integrate into our algorithm.”

    The video does provide some unique behind the scenes footage of Google engineers plugging away on their computers, presumably working on the algorithms.

    Google briefly talks about the process of raters. “These are external people that have been trained to judge whether one ranking is more relevant and higher quality than another,” says software engineer Mark Paskin.

    “We show these raters a side-by-side for queries that the engineer’s experiment might be affecting,” explains Google Search Scientist Rajan Patel. “We also confirm these changes with live experiments on real users.”

    “We do this in something called a sandbox. We send a very small fraction of actual Google traffic to the sandbox. We compute lots of different metrics,” says Paskin.

    “In 2010, we ran over 20,000 different experiments. All the data from the human evaluation and the live experiment are then rolled out by a search analyst,” says Huffman.

    Sangeeta Das, a quantitative analyst says, “For each project, it’s usually one analyst assigned from the moment that we’re talking to the engineers, trying to learn about their change.”

    “We then have a launch decision meeting where the leadership of the search team then looks at that data and makes a decision,” says Huffman.

    “Ultimately, the goal of the search eval analyst team is to provide informed, data-driven decision, and present an unbiased view” says Das.

    “If our scientific testing says this is a good idea for Google users, we will launch it on Google,” says Google Fellow Amit Signhal.

    The video then looks at the “did you mean” and “showing results for” features as an example.

    Google Maps Gets Voice Search from Chrome

    Back in June, Google brought voice search to the desktop via an update for Chrome, enabling users to click the microphone icon on the search box and speak their search, rather than type it.

    Today, Google announced that this functionality has come to Google Maps (also in Chrome) in the U.S.

    “Using voice search can make it easier to find hard-to-spell places (like Poughkeepsie or Liechtenstein) or simply get directions without typing (for example, say “Directions from Los Angeles to San Francisco”),” says Google software engineer Jed Burgess. “Or if you’re interested in exploring the world through the Earth layer (using the plugin), you can just say where you want to go and fly over to that location directly within your browser!”

    As I mentioned when I covered the launch of Voice Search for Desktop, I’m not sure how often I would find myself using it (which I don’t think I have since the day of the launch). I really don’t even use it on mobile all that often either. From the desktop especially, it seems easier to just type your query out, even when you have a hard time spelling it. Google’s pretty good about knowing what you meant.

    All of that said, the feature is certainly a good thing for accessibility for the disabled. It will be interesting to see if this expands beyond the Chrome browser.

    Google: Not Having Robots.txt is “A Little Bit Risky”

    Robots.txt as you may know, lets Googlebot know whether you want it to crawl your site or not.

    Google’s Matt Cutts spoke about a few options for these files in the latest Webmaster Help video, in response to a user-submitted question: “Is it better to have a blank robots.txt file, a robots.txt that contains User-agent: *Disallow:” or no robots.txt file at all?”

    “I would say any of the first two,” Cutts responded. “Not having a robots.txt file is a little bit risky – not very risky at all, but a little bit risky because sometimes when you don’t have a file, your web host will fill in the 404 page, and that could have various weird behaviors. Luckily we are able to detect that really, really well, so even that is only like a 1% kind of risk.”

    “But if possible, I would have a robots.txt file whether it’s blank or you say User-agent: *Disallow nothing, which means everybody’s able to crawl anything they want is pretty equal,” said Cutts. “We’ll treat those syntactically as being exactly the same. For me, I’m a little more comfortable with User-agent: * and then Disallow: just so you’re being very specific that ‘yes, you’re allowed to crawl everything’. If it’s blank then yes, people were smart enough to make the robots.txt file, but it would be great to have just like that indicator that says exactly, ‘ok, here’s what the behavior is that’s spelled out.’ Otherwise, it could be like maybe somebody deleted everything in the file by accident.”

    “If you don’t have one at all, there’s just that little tiny bit of risk that your web host might do something strange or unusual like return a ‘you don’t have permission to read this’ file, which you know, things get a little strange at that point.,” Cutts reiterated.

    All of this, of course, assumes that you want Google to crawl your site.

    In another video from Cutts we looked at yesterday, he noted that Google will sometimes use DMOZ to fill in snippets in search results when they can’t otherwise see the page’s content because it was blocked by robots.txt. He noted that Google is currently looking at whether or not it wants to continue doing this.

  • Google Gives an Update on How it Thinks About DMOZ

    Google posted a new Webmaster Help video featuring Matt Cutts. This time around, he discusses the Open Directory Project, otherwise known as DMOZ.

    The video is Matt’s response to a user-submitted question, which said: “What role does being in DMOZ play in rankings? I see some website in my niche ranked No. 1 and the only reason is because they are in DMOZ as their content is at best poor. Getting into DMOZ is impossible nowadays, so why does Google still use it?”

    “It’s hard to tell sometimes why a site is ranking,” says Cutts. “Historically, Google has the link: operator, which returns the backlinks or some subset of backlinks to people, but we don’t show every single backlink that we know of in response to link: because we show that more on the Webmaster Tools side. You can see your own backlinks, but we don’t give a full list of all the backlinks to the people who would compete with you, and I think that that’s a pretty good balance overall.”

    “So just because if you do link: you might see a link from DMOZ, and as a result think that’s why it’s ranking, it could be that there are other links,” he says. “High quality links that you aren’t seeing – that are coming from CNN, New York Times or something like that, so don’t just automatically infer from looking at the backlinks that you have either from Google or from Yahoo or even a third-party tool that that’s really all the links or all the links that Google trusts or anything like that.”

    Cutts then gets more into DMOZ specifically.

    “DMOZ has been really great in terms of being a really good resource for people, but it is starting to show its age a little bit so there’s two or three sort of updates I can give you on how Google thinks about DMOZ, and how it treats the Open Directory Project,” he says. “There was a version of the Open Directory that Google had – the Google Open Directory or something like that – which would take Open Directory data and add value by sorting the stuff by PageRank, and not as many people were using that, so even though it was one of the first things we introduced (other than straight web search), I think recently we took steps to sort of turn that off.”

    “It might still remain in a few properties, for example, in some Asian countries, it’s a little slower to type so it might be a little faster to browse through a directory so we don’t promise we’ve turned that off everywhere, but we have turned it off for a lot of different Google properties,” he says.

    Cutts then discusses how Google will sometimes use DMOZ to fill in snippets in search results from time to time. We’ve discussed this at WebProNews in the past. Google will use the snippets created by DMOZ editors that tell it what a page is when they otherwise can’t see it, like if it’s blocked with robots.txt, for example.

    According to Cutts, Google has been testing whether or not to even continue doing this, and says it’s too early to say whether this practice will remain in place or not.

    “The last thing to know about DMOZ is that it’s not the case that there’s some special boost or some kind of reward for being in DMOZ,” says Cutts. “A link from DMOZ is worth the same as a link from anywhere else. It’s just the Open Directory tends to have a little bit higher PageRank. So as a result, a link from DMOZ might carry a little more PageRank, but if you get a link from a very highly reputable source…that can easily carry just as much or more PageRank than getting a link in the Open Directory Project.”

    Interestingly enough, he suggests trying to get a reputable source to write about you, and Google has been placing a great deal of emphasis on content authors in search lately, what with the authorship markup and Google Profiles in search results.

  • Ask Android App Launches

    Ask has launched a new Android app offering a mobile Q&A service to users. The launch follows that of its iPhone app, which recently surpassed a million downloads.

    “We have placed a big bet on mobile as part of our growth strategy, and it’s paying off with four times the answer rate as our site users,” said Jason Rupp, senior director of product management at Ask.com. “Over the last three quarters there was triple digit growth in traffic from smartphones to the Ask.com mobile site, and 60 percent of that was Android. To win in mobile, you must win on Android.”

    That emphasis on mobile has become quite evident. Here’s an interview we did with the company at SXSW a few months back, discussing its Ask Around location-based Q&A app:

    Google Calls on Webmasters to Help it Improve Search

    Google hires employees all the time, but interestingly the company has basically put out a help wanted ad on its Webmaster Central blog, looking for academics to help it improve search quality and fight spam.

    “Yes, we’re looking for help improving Google search—but this time we’re not asking you to submit more spam reports,” writes Kaspar Szymanski of Google’s Search Quality team. “Although we still appreciate receiving quality spam reports, today we’ve got a different opportunity for you to improve Google Search: how about YOU join our team and do the webspam fighting yourself?”

    Earlier this month, Google launched what it called “the biggest refresh in 10 years” to its spam report form. We looked at this more closely here.

    It’s worth noting that the job is in Dublin. Szymanski posted the above image, saying that it’s an actual work environment photo taken at the Dublin office.

    “Here’s what we’re looking for: open-minded academic graduates willing to work in a multinational environment in our Dublin office,” says Szymanski. “Looking at a site’s source code should not scare you. You should be excited about search engines and the Internet. It’s also essential that you share our aversion to webspam and the drive to make high-quality content accessible. PlayStation or foosball skills are a plus.

    So what does Google look for in a spam fighter (or “Search Quality Associate”) exactly?

    The requirements are listed as:

    • Review assigned sites for quality and content.
    • Improve the quality of Google’s search results by evaluating websites to identify areas of concern and interest.
    • Cooperate with engineering teams to improve our search quality.
    • Develop and share practices for search quality investigation and analysis.
    • Investigate and analyze search quality issues in Google’s European indexes.

    “As a Search Quality Associate, you have the opportunity to make a significant and direct impact on the quality of Google’s search results through search quality evaluation,” Google says. “You will be working on the cutting edge of search and the forefront of the web ensuring quality information is provided to millions of internet users, and you will be expected to keep pace with constant change in a fast-paced work environment, bringing innovative ideas to improve access to relevant information on the web. You are a web-savvy individual who is a take-charge team player, as well as a quick learner and strongly interested in providing a better search experience for Google users.”

    The position requires he candidate to review assigned sites for quality and content and improve the quality of search results by evaluating sites “to identify areas of concern and interest.”

  • Google Panda Update – Winners and Losers in Europe

    Over the past week or so, Searchmetrics has been sharing info on the winners and losers of Google’s Panda update in Europe. Today, they shared their data for Switzerland, Italy and Spain.

    Searchmetrics has also shared data on Austria, France and Germany.

    On August 12, Google announced that it was beginning to roll out Panda in all languages around the world, except for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Google’s Amit Singal said Google was still testing improvements in those languages.

    “For most languages, this change impacts typically 6-9% of queries to a degree that a user might notice,” said Singhal. “This is distinctly lower than the initial launch of Panda, which affected almost 12% of English queries to a noticeable amount.”

    Nevertheless, the effects have been felt.

  • Google Maps Adds Over 40 New Domains

    Google announced today that it is adding over 40 new domains to Google Maps, bringing the total to 130 countries with customized maps domains and support of over 60 user interface languages.

    “A Maps domain is a customized entry point to our maps, tailored for a particular country, which makes searches for places and localities in the country more efficient,” says Google Maps business product manager Jarda Bengl. “For example when someone in Argentina searches for “Córdoba” we know that he probably meant the one in Argentina and not the other Córdoba in Spain.”

    “This means that whether you are in Sri Lanka, Venezuela or Cameroon you will have now a unique domain to get directions, local information and find new favorite places,” Bengl says.

    The map above shows the countries with new domains in dark green.

    Google also announced the launch of a weather layer in Google Maps this week. Users can see current temperatures and conditions. It utilizes info from The Weather Channel’s weather.com and the U.S. Naval Research Lab.

    Google May Start Serving All Results On One Page: Good for SEO?

    Last month we looked at video that Alex Chitu at Google Operating System shared, showing that Google was testing a new design concept for its search results page. In that concept, we saw Google keeping the top search box and navigation bar, as well as the left panel in place while the user scrolls through results.

    In the video, you can see that the results pages still end with the pagination that matches the default Google user experience of today. You still have to click to go to the next page if you wish to see more results. However, we speculated at the time that this could open up the door to infinite scrolling in web search results, as Google Image Search, which already has this feature, has a similar design concept.

    Barry Schwartz reported that Google is indeed testing infinite scroll of web results. He shares another video from Waebo showing this:

    If Google moves to this kind of user experience, which it very well could, given that it’s already in place on Image Search, it could be good news for sites that rank beyond the first page of search results. Most people probably don’t click through to very many second, third (and beyond) pages when they’re searching. At least not most of the time. They may, however, be more inclined to do a little more scrolling. Granted, they may have to click to show more results (as seen in the video).

    As one reader pointed out in the comments, DuckDuckGo already offers infinite scrolling of search results, so you can mess around with that and get a feel for it. It’s a pretty nice user experience in my opinion. They don’t make you click at all though. It’s more like scrolling through your Facebook News Feed or Twitter timeline (both of which are pretty popular activities).

    Google is always talking about improving the user experience, and I think this would do just that. Another reason why I believe they may end up going forward with this is the speed factor (also discussed in the comments). Google has been all about speeding things up lately. The most notable examples of this include the launches of Google Instant and Instant Pages, which loads the result Google thinks you’re going to click on before you actually click on it.

    That’s not to mention Google’s initiative to make the web faster, its constant emphasis on speed in Chrome, its Page Speed tools and its declaration of speed as a ranking signal.

    Infinite scroll seems like a no brainer in terms of simply making the search process faster. Of course, that might also highlight the fact that Google isn’t giving the user what they need in the first result, let alone the first page. We’ll see what happens.

  • “We’re In” Meetup App Launched by Bing

    Bing announced the release of a new Windows Phone app today, called “Wer’e In”. It’s basically a way to plan get-togethers with friends.

    “We’re In makes organizing get- together’s, carpooling and trying to find people in a crowd a breeze,” says Bing in the announcement. “Any time you want to see where your friends are—We’re In can help you. It’s simple, invite your friends, and when they join, they’ll see your location and you’ll see theirs. When the invite expires, so does the shared location – no complicated process to worry about.”

    “We’re In is a great way to save time and frustration when planning your roadtrip or meeting your friend at the mall – helping you connect with your friend faster,” Bing adds.

    The user picks their friends from the contact list, or enters their phone number, and says what the event is. Users can also specify how long they want to share location info. Then the friends receive text messages with the details. The friends can use the app fi they have it or they can join using the mobile site.

    Friends’ locations appear on a map once they elect to join. I guess this is so you can track them until they get to the place you’re meeting.

    Further messages can be added in case plans change or somebody’s running late.

    While it’s only a Windows Phone app at first, the company says it will be bringing it to more devices.

  • Google Launches Rich Snippets for Music

    Google announced that it has launched rich snippets for music. This allows webmasters to mark up pages using the music markup to allow search results to display song info in the snippet.

    The feature is already being utilized by MySpace, Rhapsody and ReverbNation. Search results would look something like this:

    “As with other rich snippet formats, implementing the markup does not guarantee that your site will be displayed with the UI shown above on a given search; a variety of factors affect whether a particular rich snippet type will appear in our search results. However, having correct markup is a prerequisite for music rich snippets to ever be displayed,” says Associate Product Manager Gideon Wald.

    Schema.org offers a set of guidelines for MusicRecording Markup:

    Schema.org was announced by Google, Bing and Yahoo earlier this year as an initiative to support a common set of schemas for structured data markup.

    “For now, music rich snippets will display song information when users search for artists, album names or song names,” says Wald. “We’ll continue working both on expanding our existing rich snippets formats and on creating new ones, so keep watching for updates about new types of content that you can surface for users right in your site’s snippets.”

  • Google Maps Adds Weather Layer

    Google announced the addition of a weather layer to Google Maps, where users can see current temperatures and conditions anywhere on Google Maps.

    Google thinks this may help make travel easier. It can’t hurt to see the weather as you’re planning the route you’re about to journey upon.

    Users will see “weather” added to the list in the widget in the right hand corner of Google Maps (with traffic, photos, etc.). When selected, you’ll not only see weather info on the map itself, but in the left panel, you’ll see current temps from The Weather Channel’s weather.com for the areas that are on the screen. There is also cloud coverage info from the U.S. Naval Research Lab.

    “And, if you look closely, you can also tell if it’s day or night around the world by sun and moon icons,” notes user experience designer Jonah Jones.

    If you click on the weather icon for a city, it will open a window displaying data about humidity, wind conditions and the four-day forecast. Users can also adjust units for wind speed and temperature, and enable/disable clouds.

    Speaking of the weather and the Weather Channel, Twitter announced last week that it has teamed up with The Weather Channel on social weather, which sees TWC using tweets about weather for an interesting citizen weather reporting feature.

  • Ask Adds Partners to Bolster “Smart Answers” for Q&A

    Ask has announced several major partnerships designed to fuel the company’s growing Q&A service. More specifically, the partnerships will drive expansion of Ask’s “smart answers” across more categories including: sports, recipes, travel and music.

    The point of the “smart answers” feature of Ask is to give users real answers, as opposed to links to web content – when applicable, and include an “exact answer” right at the top of the page. The product is still in limited beta.

    New partners include: Sports Network, Lonely Planet, Calorie Counter, IGN Entertainment and Lyrics.com.

    “Ask.com is unique from other Q&A sites in that we have a real mechanism for scouring the Web for answers to questions, in addition to helping people connect with each other for information,” said Shane McGilloway, executive vice president of business operations at Ask.com. “With Ask.com Smart Answers, users do a search or ask a question and get a clear cut answer from a credible source in a fraction of a second – an approach that yields increased user satisfaction as well as frequency and retention. With the expansion of Smart Answers into these new, high volume categories, millions more people will experience this benefit.”

    “As one of the most established players in Q&A, Ask.com sees more questions than practically anyone, and with a growing number of them sports-related, this partnership makes perfect sense,” said Ken Zajac, director of sales for The Sports Network. “Smart Answers help people save time and effort, and make it possible for us to engage with millions of Ask users every day.”

    Ask says that to ensure quality, it generates Smart Answers from a select pool of content partners “carefully vetted based on criteria like authority, relevance and subject matter depth.” Ask then uses natural language processing to match exact answers to specific questions. The answer appear on Ask.com and in the Ask Mobile Q&A App.

    WebProNews discussed Ask’s efforts in mobile, location-based Q&A with the company at SXSW a few months ago:

    Ask says food, sports and health are among the most popular categories on its service.

    “The Q&A category is bigger than ever because no one has cracked this quite yet – and we are in an excellent position to do so given our approach and history with the consumer,” CEO Doug Leeds told WebProNews recently. “Also, you’ll see us continue to invest in mobile over the next five years, as Q&A behavior increasingly translates to mobile devices. We have a pretty aggressive mobile product roadmap. I’d like to see us as the dominant provider of mobile Q&A services a few years from now.”

  • StumbleUpon: We Wanted To Go In This Direction All Along

    Today, StumbleUpon unveiled a new feature that they call the “Explore Box.” Still technically in beta testing, the new feature allows users to search for specific topics to stumble, for example, Lady Gaga, William Faulkner, or Tequila.

    Until now, StumbleUpon allowed users to explore certain areas that most of the time remained relatively broad. Aside from the few specific “interest” categories like “Film Noir,” users were only able to explore categories like “Alternative Rock,” “Food,” or “American Literature.” StumbleUpon offered around 500 of these non-specific categories.

    With the debut of the Explore Box, hundreds of thousands of more specific categories become available to users.

    This afternoon, WebProNews got a chance to talk with Director of Communications Mike Mayzel and VP of marketing and business development Marc Leibowitz. We discussed the stumbling experience and how the new explore box fits in with their goals.

    First off, the addition of a tool to make content discovery a little more specific is not a brand new idea for StumbleUpon. They said that they knew all along that this was a direction that they wanted to go. “A lot of engineering work was needed to make it possible,” they said. It was just about making sure that they had the resources to make it a reality.

    I asked them why they wanted to make a more targeted stumbling experience, to which they brought up user feedback. Users told them that they enjoy the “serendipity of exploring broad topics,” but that it is sometimes “difficult to specify what they wanted to explore with precision.”

    The Explore Box definitely allows for a more precise search.

    But StumbleUpon is not moving towards becoming a search engine, they said. “Stumbling has always been a companion to search.” They added that it was a way to be surprised, to find things that you didn’t know were out there. That randomness is at the core of what makes stumbling what it is.

    They said that they “ultimately have no ambitions of making this a search replacement.”

    Search can sometimes be too specific, and StumbleUpon wants to leave some room for discovery. They discussed a “sweet spot,” a one to three word query inside their Explore Box that will allow users some specificity of topic but not too much. Targeted, but still random.

    When asked about long-term goals of this new way to stumble, Mike and Marc discussed accessibility. They want StumbleUpon to feel “more familiar to more people.” People instinctively look for a box to type words into – that’s the nature of our search engine dominated lives. Until now, you couldn’t really do that with StumbleUpon (except for some users with a Firefox add-on).

    “By enabling users to interact with StumbleUpon in this way, it will broaden the appeal to people used to using a box.”

    StumbleUpon’s explore box runs on the same recommendation engine – one that’s personalized. If two people enter the same query, let’s say “Bacon,” the content that each person sees will differ.

    The Explore Box will not only improve the experience of those who want to stumble more specific topics, they say, but it will also “make recommendations better and better” for those using the service in it’s traditional manner, through selecting less specific categories. The specificity of feedback that they receive via “likes” of content contained in more narrow categories will help them make everyone’s results better.

    Finally, I asked Mike and Marc about the newer content discovery engine on the block, the Google+ Sparks feature. Both are former Google employees and say that they have a “lot of respect for what they do there.” I asked, more specifically, whether or not they saw Sparks as a direct competitor to StumbleUpon. They said that they aren’t quite sure what Sparks wants to be at this early stage, and they’re not entirely sure that Google does either.

    Right now, they are just focused on what they’re doing.

    Google Search for iPhone Gets Update

    Google announced today that the Google Search app for iPhone has been updated. The latest version is 0.9.0.7005.

    Additions include:

    • New way to switch between Web, Images, Places and more
    • Improved help screen
    • Removed Calendar alerts
    • Google Instant Pages
    • Minor bug fixes

    The Instant Pages feature is probably the most noteworthy addition here. Google announced the feature back in June. Basically, Google begins loading the page it thinks you’re most likely to click on before you even click on it, so that by the time you do click on it, it loads instantly.

    Instant Pages were launched in a new version of Chrome earlier this month, and the feature might prove even more beneficial for mobile, where load times can often take longer.

    It’s worth noting that there are some analytics issues to be aware of regarding Instant Pages. More on that here.

    That’s not the only new iOS offering we’ve seen from Google this week. On Tuesday, Google revealed a new iPad app called Google Catalogs. While it will eventually come to Android tablets, Google interestingly chose to launch for iPad first. That’s probably because research shows that at this point, things are pretty much iPad or nothing in terms of tablet interest. Google no doubt hopes to make a big impact on that with the acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

  • Bing is the Future of Your Living Room (According to Microsoft)

    In June, Microsoft announced it would be bringing Bing search to the Xbox this year, though the announcement was exactly for the full Bing search engine.

    Frank Shaw, Corporate Vice President of Corporate Communications at Microsoft talked a bit more about it today in a blog post, sharing a video with BIng for Xbox in action. I’m having trouble getting the embed to work (you can see the video here), but basically, it shows people saying, “Xbox, Bing this,” and “Xbox, Bing that.” and Xbox surfacing games, movies, etc. through voice search.

    It searches through games, music, video, and apps on the Xbox to retrieve available results. This is not searching the web, as you would traditionally do with BIng.

    “As you can see, integration of products and services like Xbox, Kinect and Bing is at the heart of our strategy. This is just one more example of how Bing is more than just Microsoft’s search engine, competing to win against Google – Bing is also a strategic asset that makes many other Microsoft products better and more attractive to our customers. Thanks to Bing, Kinect and our voice recognition technology, we envision a future where the words ‘Hey, where’s the remote?’ are as outdated as eight-track tapes and rotary telephones.”

    That’s all fine and good for Xbox users, of which there are many, but if you ask me, in terms of that competing with Google thing, Microsoft is still missing a huge opportunity here to get more search market share, by not simply providing access to the Bing web search engine via Xbox.

    Microsoft already has a huge advantage over Google in the living room, thanks to the popularity of the Xbox (a major factor in Microsoft’s revenue). Google TV hasn’t worked as well as Google hoped. At least so far. The Motorola Mobility acquisition could help with that though. They make set-top boxes (among other things).

    Perhaps Microsoft should put a little more emphasis on full web search from the TV sooner rather than later.
