  • Yahoo: People Are Searching For Netflix 71x More Than HBO

It would appear that consumers are very interested in the competition between Netflix and HBO, as searches for the two rivals are seeing a significant uptick, according to Yahoo.

“People are interested in the ongoing ‘war’ between the two services as [netflix hbo] is spiking off the charts this week,” a Yahoo spokesperson tells WebProNews. “Over the past 30 days, it looks like Netflix has been more on people’s minds as [netflix] is searched for 42x more than [hbo go] and 71x more than [hbo].”

“Men dominate searches for both, but women tend to search more for Netflix than HBO services,” the spokesperson says. “When it comes to actual original programs, HBO’s [true detective] has been searched for over 2x more than [house of cards] over this past month. However, [house of cards] has beat out [girls hbo] by nearly 3x over the past month on Yahoo.”

House of Cards ranks highly for returning TV show searches in general over the past thirty days, coming out well ahead of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

There have been a great deal of searches for the Game of Thrones: Season 4 trailer.

Based on the earnings reports from Netflix and Time Warner, Netflix appears to be winning the subscriber battle, at least here in the U.S. with Netflix reporting 33.4 million domestic subscribers compared to HBO’s 29 million for the end of 2013. HBO, however, remains more profitable.

  • Google Trends Gets A Few Updates

Google Trends Gets A Few Updates

Google announced that it has made some updates to Google Trends, including a new homepage, more countries for top charts and hot searches, and a faster mobile experience.

The changes come as Google has released its year-end Zeitgeist looking at the top trending searches in numerous categories and countries from the past year.

Here’s what the new homepage looks like:

    Google Trends

“In the past, when you landed on Google Trends, you’d see the most recent Hot Searches,” explains Google’s Nemo Tamir. “But Trends can help you do much more than just see what’s trending each day. With Top Charts, you can explore how different topics stack up against each other, from athletes, to song lyrics, to stocks. You can also search or click ‘Explore In-Depth’ and look up detailed reports for any topic you want (including entities and topics). We’ve been amazed by the stories people come up with using Trends, and the new homepage is designed to help you dive in and make your own discoveries.”

Google has added annual top charts for 72 countries. The feature was only available in the U.S. before. There are over 1,000 annual charts for this year, and 2,000 from last year. They’ve also added Hot Searches in 47 countries, up from 14. There is also now support for right-to-left scripts (RTL) and six new languages (Arabic, Bengali, Farsi, Hebrew, Malay, and Malayam).

“Now when you land in Vietnam, not only can you check out what’s hot locally with Top Charts and Hot Searches, you can finally do it on your mobile phone in an optimized experience,” says Tamir. “You’ll find a much more efficient and touchable interface, enabling you to check out what’s Trending, who’s topping the charts, or even explore complex search data… all while you’re on the go.”

“Tragedies like the Boston Marathon, the 6th trending term globally, and Typhoon Haiyan, #2 on our global events list, also captured the world’s attention,” he adds. “And our human desire to help came through, with [donate to the Philippines] ranking highly around the world.”

  • Google Trends Becomes More Intelligent

    Google Trends Becomes More Intelligent

Google has introduced new topic reports in Google Trends aimed at giving users smarter information about the search queries they are seeking.

Google gives the examples of “rice” and “Gwyneth Paltrow”. With the new reports, it can distinguish between rice (the food) and Rice University, and it can include common misspellings of Paltrow’s name as part of the report for that query.

When the user starts typing in the search box, it will include topic predictions (which will come in handy for examples like “rice”).

    Google Trends Topic Reports

“In addition to helping with ambiguous search terms like ‘rice,’ the new feature also automates counting many different searches that probably mean the same thing,” explains Google software engineer Gil Ran. “So, when you measure interest in ‘Gwyneth Paltrow (Actress)’ our algorithms count many other searches that mean the same thing ‘Gweneth Paltrow,’ ‘Gwen Paltro,’ etc. As our systems improve, we may even count searches like ‘Lead actress in Iron Man.’ This can be particularly useful for topics that are commonly searched with misspellings and in different languages.”

A Google web search won’t even return a Paltrow answer for the “lead actress in Iron Man” just yet.

The topic reports are currently in beta, so they’re a work in progress. There are already over 700,000 unique topics available, however. You can look at the data globally or by country. You can only do it for seven countries so far: Brazil, France, Germany, India, Italy, UK, and US.

Google has not yet updated its Zeitgeist site for 2013, which shows the top trends of the year. Yahoo, Bing and Ask have each shared their lists.

  • Here Are Your Top Bing Searches Of 2013

Here Are Your Top Bing Searches Of 2013

A person’s search history can tell a lot about that person so it only stands to reason that a nation’s search history can do the same. While not everybody may use Bing, the top searches of 2013 give us insight into what was big in 2013… among Bing users.

To start us off, Bing cements our nation’s fascination with celebrities by declaring Beyonce Knowles to be the most searched person of 2013. There’s no explicit reason given for her rise to the number one spot, but part of me hopes its because of her “wonderful” Super Bowl performance. Rounding out the top five are Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Madonna. The only non-celebrity in the top ten list was President Barack Obama and he showed up at the number ten spot.

Many of the most searched people on Bing are musicians, and it seems that those search trends carried over to musician searches as well. Beyonce is in the number one spot here as well with Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Madonna and Justin Bieber rounding out the top five.

While Beyonce may have been the most searched person and musician, her music isn’t so lucky. In fact, Macklemore’s viral hit Thrift Shop took the number one spot for most searched song of 2013. Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines and Rihanna’s Stay round out the top three.

Moving on to an entirely different category, it seems that Bing users are mostly Xbox fans with Xbox being the most searched for entertainment electronic of 2013. Rounding out the top five are mobile devices, including the iPhone, Android, iPad and Windows Phone. Xbox rivals – PlayStation and Nintendo – show up at seven and eight respectively.

As for gaming apps, the most searched on Bing is King’s Candy Crush. Angry Birds and Bad Piggies came in second and third respectively.

While I don’t see why somebody searches for a social media site, Bing users apparently searched for Facebook more than any other social media site in 2013. Pinterest came in at number two with Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram rounding out the top five.

Moving onto entertainment, Bing users were apparently unaware that Breaking Bad was the biggest television event of the year. The AMC TV series didn’t even crack the top ten with Big Bang Theory taking the number one spot. American Idol came in at number two with The Walking Dead, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones rounding out the top five.

As for movies, Iron Man 3 came in at the number one spot. Fast and Furious 6, Despicable Me 2, The Conjuring and The Wolverine round out the top five. One of the biggest films of the year – Man of Steel – came in at number ten.

Of course, we can’t forget about our nation’s love affair with food. Bing finds that Americans are still obsessed with pizza as Pizza Hut, Domino’s and Papa John’s were the top three food searches of 2013. Subway and Burger King round out the top five.

Finally, it’s worth nothing that Bing users sure know how to beat a dead horse. The most searched meme of 2013 was the Harlem Shake, followed by Grumpy Cat, Chuck Norris, Epic Fail and Bad Luck Brian.

So, what does all of this have to say about Americans? It says that we’re pizza-obsessed Beyonce Knowles fans that share every thing she does on Facebook while playing Xbox One games with Big Bang Theory in snap view. America the beautiful indeed.

The company announced a deal with Viacom to provide clips from Comedy Central shows including The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Yahoo’s previously announced archive of Saturday Night Live clips is available through the app, and the company just launched its Fall 2013 Comedy line-up, which includes five new shows starring John Stamos, Ed Helms, Jack Black, Cheryl Hines and others.

  • Elon Musk’s Hyperloop Has Generated Massive Search Buzz, Yahoo Says

Elon Musk’s Hyperloop Has Generated Massive Search Buzz, Yahoo Says

Elon Musk revealed plans for the Hyperloop transportation system on Monday. This, if built, will transport travelers between San Francisco and Los Angeles in about a half hour’s time. Naturally, the project – the brainchild of the man behind SpaceX, Tesla and PayPal (he co-founded those last two) – has drawn a great deal of attention from not only people in California, but from pretty much everywhere else as well.

According to data from Yahoo, searches for Musk and the hyperloop are spiking “off the charts” this week, and it’s also generating a lot of interest in Musk’s other work.

“With this venture, CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, is bringing attention to his brand as [tesla stock] is soaring at 2476% change over the past week, and searches for [tesla] have increased 5x over the past year,” a Yahoo spokesperson tells WebProNews. “However, it seems like Yahoo! Users’ interest in [electric cars] has decreased in general, with searches decreasing by 9x since August 2012. Men perform 75% of the searches for [tesla] in top searching regions San Francisco, LA, Seattle, San Diego and Sacramento.”

“People are interested in learning more about Musk,” the spokesperson says. “They are searching for [elon musk bio], which are off the charts in the last 7 days on Yahoo!. Searches for [elon musk] are nearly as high as the term [hyperloop] itself. 85% of searches for [hyperloop] come from males on Yahoo!.”

The spokesperson notes that Yahoo is also seeing searcher interest in [hyperloop transport system], [hyperloop video], [hyperloop transit concept], [hyperloop design], [what is hyper loop] and [hyperloop plans].

There is certainly a lot of Hyperloop information to consume. Musk’s announcement came accompanied by a 57-page PDF document discussing the details of the plans. This includes things such as the proposed route it would take, how various emergency situations would play out, what the interior of the passenger capsules would be like and how the Hyperloop would withstand an earthquake, to name a few.

  • ‘Breaking Bad’ Searches Surging, RJ Mitte Spiking 1,289%

If you haven’t been hiding under a rock in another dimension, you’ve probably heard that the final episodes of Breaking Bad are approaching. In fact, the first of the last episodes premieres this Sunday.

A couple weeks ago, we looked at some search data showing that Breakiing Bad is the highest-searched Emmy-nominated drama.

Yahoo is now sharing some fresh data related to Breaking Bad searches. The query “breaking bad” itself is spiking 37% this week, and searches are up nearly two times over what they were last years, the company says.

“Yahoo! Users are ecstatic to find out how the show wraps up,” a spokesperson for Yahoo says. “However, women’s interest in [breaking bad] has decreased over the past year, with 67% of Yahoo! Searches over the past month coming from men and only 33% coming from women.”

When we looked at Yahoo’s data a couple weeks ago, Bryan Cranston was the top-searched actor from the show, but Aaron Paul (then #2) has moved up to become the top one so far this month, the company says.

Still, searches for RJ Mitte, who plays Walter, Jr. are spiking more than any other cast member at 1,289%.

Breaking Bad is still the most searched for Emmy-nominated show so far this month on Yahoo. Others ranked in order, include: Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Downton Abbey, The Newsroom, Homeland and House of Cards.

“Bryan Cranston” searches are spiking 190% this month, Yahoo says.

A lot of the Emmy conversation has been about Netflix since nominations were revealed, particularly when it comes to the drama category, for which Netflix original House of Cards was nominated (one of its nine nominations). But if search buzz is any indication, House of Cards may have a tough time beating the competition.

According to Yahoo, Breaking Bad is the highest searched Emmy-nominated drama this week, though HoC is right behind it. Here’s the rankings:

    1. Breaking Bad
    2. House of Cards
    3. Downton Abbey
    4. Mad Men
    5. Homeland
    6. The Newsroom

In fact, more people have been searching for Netflix’s Orange is the New Black than House of Cards.

And in case you’re wondering about Google data, here’s a comparison between Breaking Bad and House of Cards:

Here are the Breaking Bad cast members ranked from most to least searches on Yahoo this week:

    1. Bryan Cranston

By the way, if you have Netflix, and you live in the UK, you can watch the new Breaking Bad episodes the day after they air.

  • One Direction School Supplies Are Really Hot This Year, According To Google Shopping Data

One Direction School Supplies Are Really Hot This Year, According To Google Shopping Data

Google has shared some search trends for back to school shoppers using the search engine for their shopping needs. The company finds that this is the earliest back to school shopping season on record, and its Google Shopping data shows One Direction supplies are very popular items this year.

According to Google, most of users’ back to school research will be complete by the end of July, and searches for “Back to School Sales” started trending two weeks earlier this year than last year.

“While just a small group of consumers have started to make purchases already, the momentum will pick up quickly toward the end of the month,” says Google sales development manager Jacalyn Stolt. “Just over a third of online shoppers will use their smartphones as an on-the-go tool to help make shopping easier. Of these, the 66% will use their smartphone to locate a retailer nearby, 64% will compare prices, and 43% will search for store item availability.”

    Google Back to School Trends

According to Google, over 60% of shoppers will begin their shopping online, and most say that online research will have “a notable impact” on their in-store purchase decisions.

Among the top trending back to school searches on Google Shopping are: One Direction School Supplies, Messenger bags, North Face school backpacks, Personalized school supplies and Nike Free 5.0 kids.

Google also found that shoppers for high school students expect to spend about $347 on average, while people shopping for college expect to spend nearly double that at $614 on average. Google also shares some top trending searches for dorm decorations: Pink dorm bedding, Dorm chandelier, Big Joe bean bag chair, Calendar wall decals and String lights.

“Back to school shoppers are price conscious and are looking for deals, with 94% of shoppers saying that a promotion or sale would persuade them to purchase a product,” says Stolt. “We found that people are more sale conscious when buying consumer electronics than other school supplies. Consumer electronics shoppers were more likely to make a purchase if there was a back to school promotion, free shipping offer, or one day sale. Brands like Dell are promoting deals of the day and in-store pickup in Google search ads to help shoppers with their back to school shopping.”

Interestingly, Google says 73% of shoppers who watch online videos for back to school shopping are looking for product reviews from “people like me,” and the company found that four in ten shoppers visited a store online or in person as a direct result of watching apparel videos. Back to school shopping searches on YouTube, which spike every year in August, have doubled from last year. Popular searches on YouTube include: room tour, school supplies, school makeup tutorial and haul videos. In just the past week, over 205,000 haul videos have been posted to YouTube.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Generates More Search Buzz Than Netflix’s Emmy-Nominated ‘House of Cards,’ ‘Arrested Development’

Netflix’s latest hit Orange is the New Black appears to be taking the web by storm. The praises have been flowing since even before the show debuted on July 11th, but OITNB continues to draw great interest from web searchers nearly two weeks later.

Yahoo tells WebProNews searches for “orange is the new black” are spiking 7,830% for the month. Over the past thirty days, 51% of searches for the show have come from males, so its audience appears to be pretty balanced. The top searched cast members over the past month are: Laura Prepon, Taylor Schilling (up 4,487%) ,Kate Mulgrew (up 2,051%), and Jason Biggs (up 1,749%).

This week in particular, “orange is the new black season 2) is spiking 490% and “orange is the new black cast” is spiking by 221% on Yahoo. The top searches related to the show over the past seven days are as follows:

    1. [orange is the new black review]
    2. [orange is the new black wiki]
    3. [orange is the new black book]
    4. [laura prepon orange is the new black]
    5. [orange is the new black trailer]
    6. [orange is the new black theme song]
    7. [orange is the new black quotes]
    8. [orange is the new black when is season 2 coming out]

Even though other Netflix shows House of Cards and Arrested Development were nominated for Emmys (Hemlock Grove was also nominated for a couple), Orange is the New Black is drawing more interest from searchers than either of them. According to Yahoo, OITNB is being searched for two times more than House of Cards and eight times more than Arrested Development this week.

That’s not to say there isn’t plenty of search buzz surrounding the Kevin Spacey-starring hit. “House of Cards” is spiking by 84% this month, and “house of cards season 2” is spiking by 46%.

The top searched HoC cast members (in order) are: Kate Mara, Robin Wright (up 150%), Kevin Spacey, Kristen Conolly and Constance Zimmer. The top HoC-related searches over the past week, according to Yahoo, are:

    1. [house of cards season 2 release date]
    2. [house of cards cast]
    3. [house of cards emmy]
    4. [what is house of cards about]
    5. [house of cards episode guide]

The company says 55% of “house of cards” searches come from males, and 79% of them come from people 35 and older.

With Netflix releasing its earnings report for the second quarter and its subsequent earnings call (in the form of a video interview with the CEO and CFO), “Netflix Stock” has also been a popular search this week, spiking by 566% on Yahoo.

Second seasons for both House of Cards and Orange is the New Black have been confirmed for 2014, by the way. The exact dates are yet to be announced. Netflix did reveal in a letter to shareholders this week that the second season of its first original show, Lilyhammer, will be released this year. Netflix’s executives also said they’d be “delighted” to produce another season of Arrested Development.

  • Arrested Development Season 5 Is In Demand (If Search Data Is Any Indication)

Arrested Development Season 5 Is In Demand (If Search Data Is Any Indication)

As we reported earlier, Yahoo shared some interesting data about search trends related to Arrested Development, the cult hit show that Netflix resurrected from the dead with a fourth season, which debuted last month.

Searches for “arrested development 2013” spiked 279% in June.

But we already know what 2013 had in store for the show. A lot of us are wondering where it will go in years to come (if anywhere).

Mitch Hurwitz, the show’s creator, has indicated on more than one occasion now, that he has some ideas of where to take the story next, but it remains to be seen whether that will be in the form of another season on Netflix, another season on some other channel, a long-rumored movie, or whether it will go further at all. Netflix did recently suggest it would like to do more, so it’s very possible fans will get another season, hopefully in 2014.

We asked Yahoo if it had any data on searches for season 5 or a film, to gauge fan interest. Searches for “arrested development season 5” spiked off the charts on Yahoo in the past 30 days, a spokesperson for the company tells us. “Off the charts” is a term Yahoo uses to refer to searches that received little to no searches in the week or month before, and are now gaining interest.

Clearly there is a great deal of fan interest, which Netflix (which makes decisions based on data, of course) will certainly take into consideration when it comes time to figure out the next move. It’s worth noting that Netflix just renewed Hemlock Grove for a second season. Prior to that, Yahoo’s search data was showing heavy interest a second season.

Interestingly, Yahoo tells us that it’s seeing virtually no activity around searches for an Arrested Development movie. This seems to suggest that fans expect another season.

Meanwhile, searches for just “arrested development” spiked 80% in the last 30 days, and searches for “arrested development season 4” are a whopping 49 times higher this month than for [arrested development season 5].

  • Arrested Development 2013: Is Netflix Making Mae Whitman A Household Name? [Her?]

Yahoo has shared some interesting data about search trends related to Arrested Development. As you probably know, Netflix launched the long-anticipated season 4 of the show last month.

According to the company, searches for “arrested development 2013” spiked 279% in June. Perhaps more interesting, however, is the huge interest in a lesser-known cast member – Mae Whitman. Whitman plays Ann Veal, and searches for her name are spiking by 1733%, Yahoo says.

    Her?

According to the company, Portia De Rossi, Charlize Theron and Alia Shawkat hold the top three most searched for spots. Theron had a recurring role in season 3. Of the male cast members, the most searches have been for Michael Cera (his character’s FakeBlock app is now available, by the way). His roles in This Is The End and Magic Magic probably helped.

Yahoo says 66% of searches for “Arrested Development” are coming from men (24% from women).

Yahoo didn’t provide info about spikes in searches for a fifth season of Arrested Development, but you can bet that interest is high. Luckily, it sounds like show creator Mitch Hurwitz already has some ideas in mind.

  • The GIF Turns 26 Years Old On Saturday, Continues To Attract A Lot Of Searches

Saturday, June 15th marks the official 26th birthday of the GIF. Yahoo has pulled together some GIF search stats to celebrate.

According to the company, 71% of searches for [gifs] come from men, and [swifts disgusted reaction gif] is amongst the top 10 GIF-related search terms in June.

    Here’s the story on that.

“People want to make their own GIFs,” a Yahoo spokesperson tells WebProNews. “Searches for [gif creators] are off the charts this month on Yahoo!”

Yahoo says [What is a gif] searches have been “off the charts” in the past 30 days, and [Funny gifs] searches are up 85% this month. Searches for [gifs] in general are up 35% this month. Here’s the breakdown by age:

  • 7% come from those under 20
  • 20% come from those 21-29
  • 15% come from those 30-34
  • 19% come from those 35-44
  • 22% come from those 45-54
  • 17% come from those over 55
  • Other popular GIF searches, Yahoo says, include: [one direction gifs], [sexy gifs], and [animated gifs]. Here are the top ten GIF searches on Yahoo from the past 30 days:

    1.[sex gifs]
    2. [animated gifs]
    3. [gif creators]
    4. [funny gifs]
    5. [what is a gif]
    6. [what does gif mean]
    7. [what does gif stand for]
    8. [swifts disgusted reaction gif]
    9. [happy mothers day gif]
    10. [one direction funny gifs]

Perhaps the most interesting part about the GIF’s birthday is that after twenty-six years, the image format is as popular as it has ever been. Google has even added a new feature to make animated GIFs easier to find in recent months, and allowed Google+ users to start using them as their profile pics. Even the White House is getting in on animated GIFs.

Yahoo itself, of course, is acquiring Tumblr, which is Animated GIF Central.

Just remember, this is how you pronounce GIF. Now, here’s a video of some famous GIFs set to music:

  • Facebook Dominates U.S. Desktop Searches In 2012

Experian Marketing Services released some findings about search trends in the U.S. for the year. The firm finds that Facebook was the top search term for the fourth year, accounting for 4.13% of all searches (up 33% from 2011).

The data is based on the top 1,000 unfiltered search terms in the U.S. across over 60 search engines. It does not include mobile.

Four different variations of the term “facebook” were among the top 10, accounting for 5.62% of searches overall (up 27% from last year). The top two terms stayed the same from year to year. Behind Facebook was “youtube” again at number two.

The top ten in 2011 were:

    1. facebook
    2. youtube
    3. facebook login
    4. craigslist
    5. facebook.com
    6. yahoo
    7. ebay
    8. www.facebook.com
    9. mapquest
    10. yahoo.com

For this year, the list looked like this:

    1. facebook
    2. youtube
    3. craigslist
    4. facebook login
    5. facebook.com
    6. yahoo
    7. ebay
    8. www.facebook.com
    9. mapquest
    10. amazon

Notice that “amazon” moved into the top ten for the first time.

Experian says that analysis of the search terms revealed that social networking-related terms dominated the results, accounting for 6.03% of the top 50 searches, an increase of 44% compared to 2011.

Google terms, including “youtube,” accounted for 1.91%, a 20% increase from last year. New terms that entered the top 50 included: backpage, cool math games, fox news, pinterest and pof (an acronym for dating site Plenty of Fish).

“Navigational searches continue to dominate the top search results as users continue to visit their favorite sites via search engines instead of directly entering a web address into their browsers URL bar,” said Bill Tancer, GM of global research for Experian Marketing. “Single-word searches grew 16% in 2012 as a result of continued reliance on search engine’s suggested results. Other top 2012 searches reflected the ongoing infatuation with celebrities online.”

The terms “yahoo” and “ebay” have been in the top ten since the ranking was started back in 2006.
