  • Scarlett Johansson Gains Special Abilities In “Lucy” Trailer [Video]

There are a couple of big upcoming films for Scarlett Johansson this year, and one of them has just debuted its first trailer. She will be the star of an upcoming science fiction film called Lucy.

Her character gains superhuman powers after ingesting a substance, while working as a drug mule for the mob. It is an action-packed film, and she should be fully prepared for the role after starring as Black Widow in The Avengers franchise.

The film is directed by Luc Besson, who is a native of France, and has made some odd films that have become cult hits throughout his career. Previous films that he has done include The Fifth Element, Leon: The Professional, and The Messenger: The Story Of Joan Arc.

Scarlett Johansson plays Lucy, a woman living in a futuristic Taipei, Taiwan, and it takes place in 2069 AD. Things truly get exciting in the film after she inadvertently ingests a drug that she was carrying in her stomach, which was intended to be transported.

The substance essentially gives her superhuman powers much like superhero would, and some the effects that it has on her include eyes that change color, the ability to write Chinese, superhuman strength, and unlimited intelligence.

The new powers may end up costing her life, and as shown in the trailer, she becomes the target of several crime organizations. She becomes less like a human after every new ability, and could be forever changed.

The film is set up as a thrill ride with Scarlett Johansson leading the way in an exciting thriller, and is sure to be a hit when it is released. It also stars Morgan Freeman as a scientist and professor who can possibly expand her life expectancy.

Featuring Scarlett Johansson as a female lead in a futuristic thriller should remind fans of Luc Besson’s previous work such as The Fifth Element, which had Milla Jovovich in a major part. That film also featured complicated crime organizations, and a variety of people that were on the hunt for her.

Lucy will open in theaters this summer, with a release date on August 8th. Her other film Under The Skin is also being released to theaters soon.

  • ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Landing On Earth Soon

Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy will soon leap out from print and into the big screen.

It was in 1969 when Marvel first came out with the story of a team of superheroes in an alternate universe. A reboot of the comic series in 2008 introduced a modern version of the team, which is based in the mainstream Marvel Universe. The film will be based on the 2008 team.

The main hero and head honcho of Guardians of the Galaxy is Peter Quill (superhero name: Star-Lord), who was taken from Earth when he was 9 years old and was raised in space ever since. He captains the spacecraft Milano, and has in his possession a mysterious orb, which turns out to be a powerful artifact that can blow up the galaxy into smithereens.

The other members of the team include Drax the Destroyer (unassuming human name: Arthur Douglas), who very much does what his name implies; aliens Groot and Rocket Raccoon, the indomitable tag team you’d want to have on your side at all times; and Gamora, who has “connections” to galactic bad boy Thanos.

Director James Gunn says the film will not only be about the things sci-fi geeks will find worthwhile, but will also have some elements of romance, drama, and humor thrown in. After all, even Guardians of the Galaxy have emotions and complex relationships. Quill, who did retain some of the 1980s culture within him, is definitely someone to watch.

Chris Pratt, who plays the lead role, says that Quill’s background makes for an odd mix of “youthful vibrancy and cluelessness in a childlike man.” He adds, “But he is willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good.”

A 20-second trailer was released on Wednesday, showing four of the film’s characters: Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel; Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt; Korath, acted out by Djimon Hounsou; and Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana. Also starring are Glenn Close, Benicio Del Toro, Bradley Cooper, and Dave Bautista.

Guardians of the Galaxy, the tenth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will join the ranks of the Avengers and Iron Man films, and premieres August 1.

  • New Details About Netflix’s Sense8 Reported

Netflix acquired the exclusive rights to a new sci-fi thriller series called Sense8 last year. The series comes from the Wachowskis (of The Matrix fame) and Babylon 5 writer J. Michael Straczynski.

For most of the time that has passed since the announcement, very little has been known about the plot, though Straczynski shared a bit in an interview in September.

To recap, these are some things he said at the time, speaking to Comic Book Resources.

“The series is contemporaneous with current events,” he explains. “It is somewhat science fiction in some respects. It concerns eight characters around the world, who are joined telepathically with each other, or empathically, and those who are after them and hunting them to try and stop this next evolution. And the cool thing is that we’re gonna shoot this in the countries that the stories are taking place.”

He said that shooting will take place in Mumbai, Nairobi, London, Mexico, the U.S., Germany, and possibly Russia.

“This is gonna be a show that will be shot around the world simultaneously,” he says. “We’re gonna have five different units shooting at the same time to tell the story, and it’s gonna be ridiculously huge, and the cool thing about working with the Wachowskis…when they did The Matrix, they didn’t want to do a show like anything else they’d ever seen before, and The Matrix created a whole new cinema language. And they said, ‘If we’re gonna do television, then we have to do the same thing. We have to create a whole new vocabulary for television production…for television, which you can do in TV. And so coming into this, working with them, we’re pioneering some new techniques and new approaches in television storytelling. It’s quite extraordinary.”

    Here’s the full interview:

TVLine is now reporting that the eight characters are connected by a shared “violent” vision, and that among the so far uncast regulars are “a closeted Mexican telenovela hunk, an Icelandic party girl, a German safe-cracker, a Korean businesswoman, an African bus driver and a transgender American blogger,” as well as a villain named Mr. Whispers.

Each episode, according to this report, will follow characters’ separate stories, and are shot in the UK, Seoul, Mumbai, Nairobi, Berlin, Mexico City, San Francisco and Chicago.

The Wachowskis said a few months ago that pre-production would begin in January.

“We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy,” the Wachowskis said when the project was first announced. “Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.”

If nothing else, the show should be visually pleasing. In addition to Straczynski’s comments, Netflix announced at CES that all of its original shows will be produced in 4K.

  • Johnny Depp’s New Film, Transcendence, Releases Trailer [Video]

Johnny Depp is back at it with yet another upcoming film. The film is called Transcendence, and features an outstanding ensemble cast with Johnny Depp and several others. News of the film has been buzzing for a while, and the trailer has finally been released.

Transcendence will see Johnny Depp return to his original type of character, playing a scientist in an odd type of science fiction thriller. The film centers on a terminally iill scientist who downloads his body into a computer.

With this act, the computer grants him power beyond his wildest dreams, and soon, he becomes unstoppable. The trailer begins with Depp’s character, Dr. Will Caster, telling an audience “The path to building super intelligence requires us to unlock the most fundamental secrets of the universe.”

Dr. Caster gets shot with a radiation-laced bullet, and he is told the effects are irreversible, which creates drastic consequences for him as the film progresses.

The film is sure to be a hit with science fiction lovers, and with the star-power attached with the cast, will dazzle audiences come spring time when it is released.

In case anyone missed it, here is a teaser trailer that was released last week.

In addition to Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Dr. Will Caster, the film features performances from Kate Mara and Rebecca Hall, two of the most-desired actress around right now. Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, and Paul Bettany will also be in the film.

In addition to Transcendence, Johnny Depp is currently working on an adaptation of Into The Woods, and London Fields, an upcoming film with his girlfriend, Amber Heard.

Transcendence will be released in theaters on April 18, 2014. The film is presented by Warner Bros. and will feature the directorial debut from Wally Pfister, a cinematographer who has worked with Christopher Nolan on multiple occasions.

  • Netflix’s ‘Sense8’ To Begin Pre-Production In January

While we’re not going to be seeing it for probably another year or better, the wheels are in motion for Netflix’s ambitious science fiction series Sense8.

Netflix announced the show back in in March. It will debut with a ten-episode season, and is slated for a release in late 2014. During the company’s earnings call last week, Netflix said it’s still expected to release at that time, but it is subject to change, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that we won’t see it until 2015.

Either way, it will begin the pre-production phase in January, according to the Wachowskis (of The Mattix fame), who are working on the project with Babylon 5‘s J. Michael Straczynski.

In an interview about their upcoming movie Jupiter Ascending, the Wachowskis reportedly said as much.

When the project was first announced, the Wachowskis said, “We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy. Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.”

While still few details are known about the plot, we’ve learned the most about it so far from an interview Straczynski gave to Comic Book Resources last month.

“The series is contemporaneous with current events,” he said at the time. “It is somewhat science fiction in some respects. It concerns eight characters around the world, who are joined telepathically with each other, or empathically, and those who are after them and hunting them to try and stop this next evolution. And the cool thing is that we’re gonna shoot this in the countries that the stories are taking place.”

Based on what Straczynski had to say about it, they’re trying to do for television what The Matrix did for film.

  • ‘Amnesia’ Creators Reveal New ‘Soma’ Project, Trailer

After a countdown on the “nextfrictionalgame” website, Frictional Games has revealed its next project, Soma. The project has not been fully revealed, however, and all the information about the game comes from the cryptic website somasystems.org. The website appears to be a viral marketing campaign for the game, with a series of “case files” that might be revealed in the near future, or as part of an ARG.

Only one case file is currently available, titled “Vivarium.” The link on the webpage leads to a description of the Vivarium case, which deals with a strange machine found during a salvage operation. The machine was set to be disassembled, but was accidentally switched on during the process. An examination of the machine is depicted in a live-action teaser trailer also found on the site:

Judging from the video, the game (presumably titled Soma?) will be another horror game. Frictional is now well-known for Amnesia: The Dark Descent and its sequel, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs. Those games were set in a more classic, turn-of-the-20th-century horror setting. Soma looks to be bringing the helpless survival horror of the Amnesia games to a science fiction setting – a move that could bring more people into the genre.

  • Netflix’s ‘Sense8’ Hopes To Do For TV What ‘The Matrix’ Did For Film

Earlier this year, we learned that Netflix secured the exclusive rights to a new sci-fi thriller series called Sense8, which comes from the Wachowskis (of The Matrix fame) and Babylon 5 writer J. Michael Straczynski.

So far, little is known about the plot, but there’s a good reason for that. Straczynski talked a little bit about the show in an interview with Comic Book Resources:

“We wrote the first three scripts on our own,” he says. “We specced it out, brought it to Netflix, and the funny thing is we had four days of pitches planned. Netflix was our first meeting at I think 11:00AM on a Tuesday, and then we were gonna go to HBO….”

By 2:00, he said, Netflix had called and said they wanted the show.

When asked about how they convinced Netflix to put up a budget for this kind of thing, he says, “The international marketplace is a large part of this certainly. We had to come at them with a production model that said we can control the costs on this. We start shooting in Chicago, doing our stuff on set, jump out, blow out the set, jump out to locations in and around Chicago, then we jump out to our individual locations having four or five units shooting at the same time….mainly outside locations….using local production teams – camera teams – so that each area has its own distinct look, and we did the budget, worked it out, and said we can make this for this kind of money, and they said, ‘Go for it.’”

He didn’t give any figures, but it certainly makes you wonder just how large the budget for this project is. It’s even more interesting to consider in light of recent comments from Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos, who said last week, that Netflix will be doubling its budget for original content over the coming years.

“Each episode cuts back and fourth though,” Straczynski says of the Sense8 format. “Your anchor is the original stuff you started with on set. That kind of sets your style and your tone…”

He says each location will have its own look, but the set stuff will provide a general continuity.

He said he wouldn’t go much beyond that in terms of the plot, because “they like to keep things very close to the vest,” and he supports that. He says that’s why there isn’t much online about the story.

“What we’re doing is really kind of new and innovative,” he said, adding that he didn’t want to have someone else eat their lunch.

He did say he’ll be directing the London sequence. They’ll be shooting about three weeks in London next year.

“Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time,” said Sarandos when the project was announced. “Their incredible creations are favorites of Netflix members globally and we can’t wait to bring Sense8 to life.”

“We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy,” said Andy and Lana Wachowski in a joint statement at the time. “Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.”

So far, Netflix has hardly disappointed with its original content offerings, and from the sound of it, Sense8 could its most ambitious project yet. It’s hard to say when we’ll see the first season debut, since it doesn’t even start shooting until next year, but it’s scheduled for sometime in late 2014. It will start with ten episodes.

  • Comic-Con 2013: New Ender’s Game Teasers With Harrison Ford

Ender’s Game is one of the most-loved science fiction novels of all time. So, when it comes to a movie version, director Gavin Hood and actors such as Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley have a fine line to walk when it comes to pleasing fans.

Those fans showed up this week to confront the movie’s cast and crew at the San Diego Comic-Con‘s Ender’s Game panel. They were treated to two new teaser trailers, each narrated by Ford, who plays Colonel Graff in the movie. One shows Graff introducing new cadets to some of the movie’s back story with a very serious monologue:

The other shows off a bit of the movie’s special effects, including glimpses of Bugger ships during a battle, the all-important battle room, and the same huge spoiler that the movie’s first trailer contained:

In other recent news, Lionsgate last week responded to the controversy that has been building regarding Ender’s Game. Though the novel is beloved in science fiction culture, the book’s author, Orson Scott Card, has come under fire in recent years for his outspoken opposition to gay rights. With multiple organizations calling for boycotts of the movie, Lionsgate distanced itself from Card, saying it is a supporter of the LGBT community and that it recognizes gay marriage and domestic partnerships internally.

Lionsgate also announced it will host a benefit premiere of Ender’s Game for the benefit of LGBT causes.

  • Remember Me Release Date Set For June 4

Remember Me Release Date Set For June 4

After teasing gamers with previews of the game for months, Capcom today finally announced a release date for Remember Me. The game will launch in North America on June 4 and in Europe on June 7. It will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, which has, as of now, the same release date as the console versions.

Remember Me is an upcoming cyberpunk game set in a futuristic Neo-Paris, the year 2084. Players will take on the role of Nilin, a “memory hunter” who can break into people’s minds and steal or alter memories. The game will also feature some tall building climbing and combat against a varied assortment of enemies. The combat show seems to resemble the Batman: Arkham style of third-person fighting, but the game also features a “Combo Lab” where Nilin’s combos can be altered to suit particular play styles.

The new release date trailer unveiled by Capcom today shows many of these details, along with a hint of what the game’s story will contain:

  • Star Trek Into Darkness Gets a New Teaser

Star Trek Into Darkness Gets a New Teaser

Paramount Pictures today released the newest teaser for its upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 reboot of the iconic science fiction franchise. The new preview portrays the movie as an action thriller meant to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, rather than the often cerebral Star Trek TV series or the character-focused original-timeline Star Trek movies.

“The goal for this movie was definitely to up the ante as much as we could,” Abrams says in the trailer. “The action in this movie, the scale of the movie is light-years beyond what we did in the first movie.”

Zoe Saldana, who plays Uhura in the new Star Trek movies, backs up Abrams by saying, “This is the kind of film that 3D was made for.”

Though these types of statements may be exactly what Star Trek fans don’t want to hear, a movie of that sort will be well-positioned for summer blockbuster hit status. If Star Trek fans ever want to see a continuation of Gene Roddenberry’s universe in TV series form again, a successful movie franchise could go a long way to making that happen.

  • New Star Trek Video Game Footage Shows Stealthy Spock

Earlier this week, Namco Bandai released an action-packed trailer for the upcoming Star Trek video game based on the rebooted J.J. Abrams movie franchise. It appeared to imitate

A new look at the game released today shows that the game won’t be completely a cover-based shooter (though it still appears much of it will be). Brian Miller, SVP at Paramount Pictures narrates the video and talks a bit about the co-op aspect of the game that allows players to take on the role of both Kirk and Spock.

It turns out that the co-op characters will have different play styles and abilities. While Kirk focuses on honing his phaser skills and appears to play very similarly to a Mass Effect 3 Commander Shepherd, Spock is able to use stealth and perform Vulcan nerve pinch takedowns to defuse situations.

Since the game is scheduled to come out on April 23 – one month before the release of Star Trek Into DarknessStar Trek fans shouldn’t expect it to have any spoilers about the upcoming movie. There will be plenty of Gorn blasting, though. Also, if the the developers have any sense they will have included a crafting system that allows players to create their own Gorn cannon.

It’s still unknown whether the Star Trek video game will be fun or a classic thrown-together movie tie-in. The animations and graphics don’t seem spectacular, but the ability to stealthily perform a Vulcan nerve pinch is at least evidence that there will be one good thing in the game.

  • New Cyberpunk 2077 Details, Hidden Messages Emerge

Yesterday’s debut teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 wasn’t the only thing CD Projekt RED released on the subject of its upcoming science fiction game. It turns out the trailer contains a secret message for those who are observant and clever. Luckily, the internet makes in unnecessary for each of us to try and pause the YouTube video to read the message:

Do you like our latest creation? We certainly hope so 🙂 You may remember that we sometimes send you guys secret messages like this. It’s a great way for us to speak right to you instead of burying ourselves in corporate mumbo-jumbo so let’s begin!

First of all – have you noticed all the details in our teaser (yes, it’s a teaser. We’ll make a proper trailer in the future)? If you know the Cyberpunk setting there are some things you can spot, like implants – look for the weapon hands and the real skin – corporate emblems that should look familiar and more. Happy hunting!

You’re probably curious about the release date. It’s currently scheduled a way off in 2015 but in truth the delivery date is more like “when it’s done.” We will release Cyberpunk to you when we’re convinced it is nothing but pure, refined, unadulterated awesome. We want it to be the most kick ass futuristic RPG ever – OK, maybe this sounds pretty bully, but it is our actual goal! You judge if we deliver it!

Oh – and you may wonder why we announced our game so early before the release. The reason is that we’re still building our dev team so if you are a talented dude or dudette willing to work in a really different company (gamers rule & boring corporate stuff drools!) on a super ambitious project, send us your application right now! careers@cdprojektred.com

So you want to know what kind of game Cyberpunk 2077 will be? The short description is that it will be a story-heavy, nonlinear, open world RPG based on the well known Cyberpunk pen&paper system and setting. Building open world games is something we are mastering right now and we believe that properly joining nonlinear gameplay with an excellent story telling will bring a totally new quality. Mmm… We’ll tell some more about it soon!

And that’s not all that’s new. We are about the reveal our other project which is much closer to being completed and yes, it will also be a fully open-world game with an intense story. You can probably guess the game we’re talking about 🙂 On the 5th of February it will all be clear.

So stay tuned as we will have quite a lot to show and tell you soon!

We are waiting for you on our newly created forum called Afterlife – what other name could we have chosen for it?

    CD Projekt RED Team

The 2015 release window is a bit disappointing, but it’s better that the developer is taking the time to get the game right. Better one much-delayed cyberpunk masterpiece than several rushed cyberpunk titles.

The Afterlife forums appear to be the official community forums for the Cyberpunk 2077 project. The developers there are soliciting suggestions for the game from the community. Also, one of the first posts to the forum gives a few more teasers for the game’s “grim vision of the future,” which includes a form of entertainment called “braindancing.” It’s certainly good that Night City won’t be glitzy, as one of the hallmarks of the cyberpunk genre is dystopia and the idea that technology hasn’t been a savior for humanity, but can easily be used to enslave it.

  • Cyberpunk 2077 Trailer Shows a Devastated Night City

One week ago it leaked out that the trailer for the next CD Projekt RED (CDPR) was only a week away. Though that week may have passed slowly for fans, it has passed. The Cyberpunk 2077 teaser trailer is here, showing why the cyberpunk genre is about to make a comeback in videogames.

Though the trailer doesn’t contain any in-game footage, it does provide a good overview of the game’s style and art direction, which fans of the Cyberpunk tabletop role-playing game (RPG) might recognize. The video is more of an extension of the sexy teaser image unveiled at the game’s announcement.

Those who watch carefully can also catch a hint at what might be happening in Night City in 2077. However, the video’s description provides more background, describing the sequence as a depiction of how a “psycho squad” can acquire a new member:

The Psycho Squad specializes in combating “psychos” — individuals who overuse implants and substances that boost or otherwise alter the human body.

There comes a point when they overdose on these innovations, and their bodies start to rebel against their biological body parts as well as all things organic around them. Simply put, they start killing people, who they now derisively call “meatbags.”

When a psycho goes on the rampage, strange things can happen. There’s carnage, and the psycho might be taken down by regular police, but they’re not always able to get the job done.

When things spin out of control, they call in MAX-TAC (Maximum Force Tactical Division), popularly called the Psycho Squad.

CDPR, the developers of the award-winning The Witcher series, have announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will be a mature-themed sandbox RPG featuring futuristic weapons, implants, upgrades, and gadgets for players to use. The mechanics and setting for the game will be based on those found in the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG.

  • New Trailer Shows Remember Me Really is a Capcom Game

Remember Me is still more than four months away from release, but the title has already been picked apart by science fiction fans since its debut at Gamescom last year. As one of the vanguard in a coming cyberpunk video game revival, Dontnod is under a lot of pressure to deliver a fun experience that can hold up when compared with games such as 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Today, a new trailer for Remember Me hit the internet. It shows a few new characters other than the protagonist, Nilin, which is nice. Also, it shows a setting that appears to be a cross between Perfect Dark and Blade Runner.

The most interesting thing about the trailer, though, is how Capcom-y it makes the game seem. Dontnod is based in Paris, so it might have been expected that Remember Me‘s s style would resemble that of other French developers, such as Ubisoft. However, Capcom games (think Resident Evil or Devil May Cry) have a certain grandiosity and silliness about them, not to mention over-the-top villains. The massive boss battle between Kid Xmas and Nilin previewed in the trailer is pure Capcom.

So, if Remember Me won’t be as serious as the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, that’s ok – but only as long as Capcom makes sure the fighting system in the game is well-polished.

  • Cyberpunk 2077 Trailer Coming Next Week(ish)

With the cult hit that CD Projekt RED (CDPR) has on its hands in The Witcher series, it would be easy for them to sit back and run that franchise into the ground with sequels. Thankfully, the developers at the Polish studio are more ambitious.

Back in October, the CDPR announced that it is currently developing a science fiction RPG based on the pen and paper RPG Cyberpunk. Titled Cyberpunk 2077, the game will be an mature-themed sandbox RPG featuring futuristic weapons, implants, and gadgets. Now, less than three months on from that official announcement, it appears gamers will get a look at what Night City will look like in video game form.

Tom Ohle, director at Evolve PR today leaked over Twitter the fact that he is watching an early cut of the first Cyberpunk 2077 teaser trailer. His original tweet appears to have been deleted, but it has been immortalized on the NeoGAF forums, where the image below comes from.

    Cyberpunk trailer tweet

Ohle followed up his proclamation by providing a few cryptic answers to fan questions. Those answers included the detail that the trailer will be released “Next weekish.” Some, but not all, of those tweets are still live:

    Cyberpunk trailer date leak

Though it doesn’t seem as if CDPR has had enough time to develop anything trailer-worthy, fans of the developer and the Cyberpunk series could be in for a nice surprise. Judging from Ohle’s enthusiasm, the trailer should be pretty exciting.

  • Arthur C. Clarke eBook Collection Released

Famed sci-fi author Authur C. Clarke is making the move to eBooks. RosettaBooks, an independent eBook publisher, announced today that many of the author’s influential works have been released in eBook formats. The books are now on sale for $9 per volume in the Kindle, Nook, iBookstore, and Kobo eBook stores.

The Arthur C. Clarke eBook collection includes 35 of the author’s works, including Childhood’s End, the 2001: A Space Odyssey series, the Rendezvous with Rama series, and Prelude to Space. All 11 of Clarke’s short story collections are also included in the eBook collection.

“Arthur C. Clarke’s work is as fresh and engaging today as when originally published decades ago. Clarke’s novels and short stories are uniquely suited to eBook formats. It is an honor for RosettaBooks to publish the Arthur C. Clarke Collection,” said Arthur Klebanoff, CEO of RosettaBooks.

Clarke, who died in 2008, was the author of numerous novels and short stories. His writings won many Hugo and Nebula awards, and for decades he was known as one of the “big three” of sci-fi authors, along with Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov. He also hosted the Arthur C. Clarke’s Mysterious World U.K. television series and its successors. In 1994, Clarke was nominated for a Noble Peace Prize.

Clarke is also famous for popularizing the idea of geostationary satellites, and the geostationary orbits satellites today use are often referred to as the “Clarke Orbit.”

  • Michael O’Hare Dies at 60, “Babylon 5” Actor

If you were a prominent Babylon 5 watcher back in the late 1990s, I am sure you remember the character “Commander Jeffrey Sinclair” played by Michael O’Hare. Unfortunately, Michael O’Hare passed away this past Friday (September 28th, 2012).

Prior to his involvement with the television world, O’Hare was active with the Broadway scene in New York. One of his well-known Broadway appearances was portraying “Col. Nathan Jessup” in A Few Good Men. This role was later played by Jack Nicholson in the movie version of A Few Good Men.

In 1992, O’Hare accepted the role as “Commander Jeffrey Sinclair” in the upcoming Babylon 5 science fiction television series, which then aired in 1993. Although, O’Hare was only with Babylon 5 for one full season, but the character was brought back in season two, and for a very short while in the series’ third season.

Michael O’Hare (born as “Robert Michael O’Hare”) died on September 28th, 2012, after suffering a heart attack and being placed in a coma since September 23rd, 2012. Babylon 5‘s producer J. Michael Straczynski posted the following announcement on his Facebook page:

“I regret that I must convey the sad news that Michael O’Hare passed away today. He suffered a heart attack on Sunday and was in a coma until his passing this afternoon. This is a terrible loss for all B5 fans and everyone involved with the show wishes to convey their condolences to the O’Hare family. He was an amazing man.”

Various fans of Michael O’Hare have been leaving their respects via Twitter:

  • Star Trek Sequel: Chris Pine, Alex Kurtzman Remain Tight-Lipped

Fans have been clambering for information regarding the highly-anticipated “Star Trek” sequel since the film’s announcement, though, in true J.J. Abrams fashion, very little about the project has been made available to the public. Outside of a few rumors regarding Benedict Cumberbatch’s turn as Kahn — even IMdB Pro has him listed as “rumored” — specific details about the flick have been kept to a bare minimum.

In an effort shed some light on the subject, a few journalists made a valiant attempt to extract a few bits and pieces from Chris Pine and Alex Kurtzman during their promotional junket for “People LIke Us”. In all honestly, it has to suck answering questions about one project when you’re there to promote another. Then again, given the popularity of the “Star Trek” franchise, I’m sure they were prepared for such inquiries.

Pine, who plays Captain James T. Kirk in the forthcoming sequel, tossed a few hints in Collider’s general direction, though, to be honest, they really don’t amount to much. Unless, of course, you consider the term “mythic” to hold some sort of hidden meaning.

“With the second one, people will find that it’s the mythic structure, done really well. The character journeys are just perfect mythic structures,” Pine explained. “They do it so well. The journeys with the characters will be really great, and the explosions and set pieces are going to knock people out of their seats.”

According to ComingSoon.net, Kurtzman was quick to address the film’s absence from this year’s San Diego Comic Con. “Part of why we delayed a year was because we didn’t want to rush it,” he said. “Just because we feel very beholden to the franchise and we feel very protective of it and the worst thing we can do is to put it out there before we felt like we were ready and we were still working on the story.”

In other words, the cast and crew aren’t giving anything away right now. Curious parties will have to direct their attention to the “Star Trek” sequel’s trailer, which, hopefully, will attach itself to a major theatrical release sometime soon. While you’re waiting for that to happen, take a look at a few leaked set images below.

  • The Science Of Star Trek [Infographic]

One of the coolest things about Star Trek is that the technology has always been loosely based on reality instead of total science fiction. I believe they call it science fact. Some of the stuff is way out there and other stuff has already been surpassed by us. Take the communicator for example. They had clunky communicators on TOS. My iPhone is so much more powerful than their device. Other things aren’t even close, such as warp drive.

POver at bestcomputersciencedegrees.com they decided to put together an infographic about some of the more famous tech in the Star Trek universe and show how close we ar and how infinitesimally far away we are. In the infographic they go over things ranging from impulse engines and shields to transporters and holodecks! Enjoy!!:

  • Tor and Forge E-Books to go DRM-Free by Early Summer

DRM is a bit of a conundrum. It has, as far as I know, never deterred piracy, yet entertainment companies continue to implement DRM solutions that hinder or block paying customers. A recent example is that both Sony and Microsoft are reportedly considering anti-used-games DRM for their next-generation consoles. But not all companies fail to see that DRM is a losing battle.

Tom Doherty Associates, the publisher behind the Tor, Forge, Orb, Starscape, and Tor Teen imprints, will be making all of its e-book titles DRM-free. The announcement was made yesterday on the Tor blog that the publisher’s entire library of e-books will be DRM-free by “early July.” A similar announcement was made for Tor UK e-book titles. From the blog post:

“Our authors and readers have been asking for this for a long time,” said president and publisher Tom Doherty. “They’re a technically sophisticated bunch, and DRM is a constant annoyance to them. It prevents them from using legitimately-purchased e-books in perfectly legal ways, like moving them from one kind of e-reader to another.”

It’s comforting, and a bit surreal, to see a company “get it” when it comes to DRM. Being able to use purchased content in any way a user may choose almost seems to be a luxury now. Doherty sees that DRM is not needed and is a hinderance to legitimate customers. This is especially true in an industry where an act of piracy can create a die-hard fan for an author. Even more true with genre fiction, where series often run through dozens of novels. Some of science fiction and fantasy’s biggest authors, such as Cory Doctorow and Neil Gaiman, have even been giving away books for years now.

What do you think? Are you excited that you will be able to keep your Tor science fiction collection even after Amazon Kindle’s are a relic of the past? Leave a comment below with your DRM hopes or horror stories.

  • Science Fiction Stacks Up To Real Technology [Infographic]

One of my favorite genres of fiction is science fiction. It’s fun to see what writers see as being the future of technology. From the original Metropolis to Star Trek to The Fifth Element, mankind has always imagined the next great breakthroughs in technology.

Today’s infographic from AT&TSavings shows that what we once thought was just future talk is right now in front of us. It’s also usually in forms vastly different than what scientists and authors thought they would looks like years ago. As an example, Metropolis was made in 1926 and has the first use of a video phone. It wasn’t until 80 years later in 2006 that this dream came to fruition with Skype. Another fun example is the universal database in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy from 1981. While it’s a bit of a stretch to call it a universal database, Wikipedia is the closest approximation to all the data contained in the Guide.

The rest of the list features some fun sci-fi gadgets like the Death Star’s planet destroying laser that’s now being used in a much smaller capacity by military lasers. The last few years, however, have seen a huge increase of researchers making good on years of sci-fi speculation. We’re now on the cusp of making self-driving cars, flying cars, space elevators and other futuristic things.

All of this is just to say that without sci-fi, there probably wouldn’t be the amazing inventions we see today. It takes the imaginations of these men and women who dreamed of the future to create the modern inventions we use in our every day lives.
