  • Glee: School Shooting Episode Gets Mixed Reviews

    [Author’s Note: Spoilers ahead]

Network TV viewers who are still following the Fox show Glee got quite a treat Thursday evening. The only problem is, the consensus is still out on whether it was salty or sweet.

This week’s Glee featured a ‘school shooting’ of sorts. Though no one is injured, two shots ring out through McKinley High. In the aftermath of the shooting, a flashback reveals the shooter’s identity, and shows why a well-loved teacher takes the blame for the incident.

Fans of the episode are calling it a bold step for a network TV show, while critics are trashing the episode as exploitative and insensitive toward families who just months ago lost children in the Newtown elementary school shooting. The comments being left on Twitter show the mixed reaction of fans:

  • Shooter T.J. Lane Wears ‘Killer’ T-shirt to Court, Flips Off Victims’ Families

Shooter T.J. Lane Wears ‘Killer’ T-shirt to Court, Flips Off Victims’ Families

Note: This post contains strong language.

Convicted murderer T.J. Lane was sentenced to life in prison for the 2012 murder of three high school students in the Ohio town of Chardon.

According to an Associated Press report, the 17-year-old Lane, who attended an alternative school, walked into the Chardon High School cafeteria on the morning of February 27, 2012 and fired a .22 caliber pistol at a group of students. Three students died, and Lane, now 18, pleaded guilty to three counts aggravated murder last month. To date, he has provided no reasoning for his actions.

At his sentencing today, Lane showed his contempt for the court and his victims by wearing a white t-shirt with the word “KILLER” scrawled on it in marker. Lane smirked and gazed off while family members of his victims testified that he should receive the maximum penalty available.

During the sentencing Lane opted, against his lawyer’s advice, to address the courtroom. In a shocking display, Lane turned toward the families of his victims and spouted vulgarities, raising his middle finger to the courtroom.

“This hand that pulled the trigger that killed your sons now masturbates to the memory,” said Lane. “Fuck all of you.”

Lane’s three life sentences do not allow for the possibility of him ever being paroled. The death penalty was unavailable to the prosecution, as Lane was only 17 at the time of the shooting.

  • NRA Back on Facebook, Gives Statement on Newtown Shooting

Shortly after the tragic shootings in Newtown, Connecticut that left 26 innocents dead, the nation’s largest and most powerful gun lobby decided that a social media blackout was the way to go. The National Rifle Association stopped tweeting, and they unpublished their Facebook page making it inaccessible to everyone except page admins.

Today, they’re back on Facebook and the organization has made their first public statement on the Sandy Hook elementary shootings.

They posted a short statement to their 1.7 million Facebook fans just a few minutes ago, saying that they will offer “meaningful contributions” to ensure this “never happens again.”

The NRA is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown. Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

They also posted an image that says, “There’s never been a more important time. Join the NRA.”

They’ve also announced that they will hold a national press conference in Washington DC on Friday. Time TBA.

  • School Shooting In Connecticut Leads To Different Ryan Lanzas Being Mistaken For Shooter

Once CNN released the name of alleged shooter Ryan Lanza (reports are now saying it was his brother), a mad media scramble ensued to look for this person’s social media profiles. One Facebook profile in particular seemed to fit the bill in that Ryan Lanza was listed as from Newtown, Connecticut (though listed as living in New Jersey).

Some media outlets began to show the profile picture, and there were even a bunch of fake Facebook pages that quickly popped up:

    Lanza Facebook pages

Shortly thereafter, reports came out that this was not the same Ryan Lanza. Gawker points to a couple of people who are allegedly Facebook friends of Lanza’s, who say it’s not him, sharing alleged screenshots (it has not been confirmed that these are authentic, to my knowledge) of Lanza’s profile, where he says things like:

“IT WASN”T ME I WAS AT WORK IT WASN’T ME,” “I’m on the bus home now it wasn’t me,” and “Everyone shut the fuck up it wasn’t me.” The profile has since disappeared from Facebook.

Another Ryan Lanza on Twitter assured everyone that it was not him either, despite recent tweets like “fuck parents” and “depression… fml…”
