  • “Bajirao Mastani”: Indian Film Wins Big At Renault Sony Guild Awards

Bajirao Mastani is making a huge impact in the world of Bollywood and those who enjoy a great love story.

Bajirao Mastani cleaned up at the Renault Sony Guild Awards, with the Best Actor in Leading Role Award going to Bajirao Mastani star Ranveer Singh.

Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Sound Design, Best Costume Design, Best Dialogue, Best Choreography and Best Actor in a Supporting Role also all went to Bajirao Mastani.

The story of 18th century Hindu Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I and his love for a Muslim woman, Mastani, is being called the magnum opus for director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Bajirao Mastani was a bit of a risk for Bhansali as the setting, plot and interaction of characters are all apparently “alien” to what is normally seen in Indian films.

    However, Bhansali wasn’t worried.

He said, “I’ve lived with the script for 12 long years. Over the years, I read it over and over again and continue to be thrilled by it. Every time I read it, I realized Bajirao Mastani must be made. It’s such a powerful screenplay.”

He added, “I never considered what the budget would be, or that audiences may not connect with the classical flavor. There was no fear of failure when I made Bajirao Mastani. I am a fearless filmmaker.”

One of the film’s stars, Priyanka Chopra, also won the Guild Global Honor Award for her American debut in the TV drama, Quantico.

What do you think of Bajirao Mastani director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s fearless approach to filmaking?

  • Deepika Padukone: Can’t Commit to Fast and Furious 7

Deepika Padukone is passing on Fast and Furious 7 due to previous commitments. This would have been the Indian star’s Hollywood debut but she was scheduled to shoot Happy New Year with Shah Rukh Khan and will be out promoting Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ramleela. Padukone is seen here in the Ramleela trailer and press for the film that is scheduled for release at the end of November. Fast and Furious needed her attention starting 10 September.

A rumored budding romance with Ramleela co-star Ranveer Singh is taking South Asian press by storm. Ranveer recently dropped in on “Deepy” who is currently shooting Happy New Year in Dubai, apparently after her father had ended his Dubai visit. Singh says of his co-star, “I am not dating her. Bhansali (the director) wanted us to develop a comfort level, as the film we were doing is a passionate and intense love story. And while working on it, I grew fond of her.” When questioned about PDA between the two at a Dubai nightclub, Singh passed it off as a family trait to be physically affectionate, “it is a very casual thing… I enjoy her company thoroughly. We do what normal youngsters do.”

Happy New Year co-stars Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan are longtime colleagues, with box office sensations Om Shanti Om (2007)—Padukone’s debut—and Chennai Express (2013), which is currently the highest grossing Bollywood film, worldwide. The film’s stars are also scheduling a live song-dance show in Dubai’s International Cricket Stadium. Access All Areas, promises to be an interactive experience for audiences and is slated for 1 December.
