  • Sandy Hook Playground Vandalism Investigated

In April, as part of the Sandy Ground project, the purple playground was opened in Hartford, Connecticut in honor of Ana Grace Marquez-Greene, one of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. But this weekend, almost a month after it opened, the park was vandalized.

Writing was scrawled on the playground sign, reading “BEKS” and “To Sandy Hook” with a peace sign. Police believe the incident happened late Saturday night.

The purple park, decorated with her artwork, was opened on what would have been Ana’s eighth birthday. It is one of 26 playgrounds being built for each of the victims of the shooting.

“It’s just a way she lives on, and as a parent who’s lost a child so young, you do want your children to live on. And this is a way for us to do that,” said Ana’s mom Nelba Marquez-Greene.

Bill Lavin, founder of The Sandy Ground: Where Angels Play Foundation, said, “Give a little window of joy to these families that have suffered so much is our privilege, our blessing.”

The shooting, which happened on December 14, 2012, took the lives of 20 children and 6 adult staff members. The shooter, 20-year old Adam Lanza, shot and killed his mother before driving to the school, then proceeded to shoot himself in the head as first responders arrived at the scene.

The incident was the deadliest mass shooting at a high school or grade school in U.S. history.

Sandy Hook Elementary School was demolished starting October 2013. In March of this year, Newtown city officials announced the new design for the new school. The only remaining remnant of the original school will be the flagpole.

Also happening last weekend, another Sandy Ground Project playground was added in West Beach Stamford, Connecticut in honor of Jesse Lewis.

Police in Hartford are investigating the purple playground vandalism and who was behind it.

As of today, the graffiti has been scrubbed clean.

    Newtown Shooting: New Details Released

Nearly one year after the horrific shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School that claimed 26 innocent lives, officials are still no closer to pinpointing a motive. There are, however, new details that have been released that include what shooter Adam Lanza did on the days leading up to the shooting.

Police say that Lanza’s mother, Nancy, left for a 3-day trip that week and had just returned home to sleep in her own bed when Lanza shot her dead. They found the rifle used to shoot her in her room. Details from a GPS system on Lanza’s car showed that he took a trip to the elementary school the day before the shootings, although why is still a mystery.

The next day, on December 14th, Adam Lanza drove to Sandy Hook armed with several weapons and rounds of ammo, burst in, and shot 20 children and six adults within five minutes before shooting himself. The tragedy immediately made headlines around the nation and a public plea began to President Obama for tighter gun control measures, even as the debate raged on among social media users.

Now, a 48-page report on the investigation that includes details about that day has been released, and the family members of the victims were notified of its release days in advance, though they say that no report will ever answer everything they need to know. The pages were taken from some 2,000; much of it was redacted due to Connecticut Legislature fighting to prevent its release, as it also did with 911 calls made from the school that day. A judge has said he will listen to the tapes and decide if they should be made public.
