  • Sandra Fluke Is Taking Steps Toward Running For Congress In California

The steps are being taken for Sandra Fluke to run for Congress in the state of California. She is seeking the endorsement from the California state Democratic Party in order to run for the seat that will be vacated by Harry Waxman.

Although she has yet to officially declare her bid for the congressional race, Sandra Fluke continues to take steps toward running, and in a recent interview, she said “I’m flattered that I’m being discussed as a potential candidate. A number of folks I respect very deeply have reached out today and encouraged me to run. I am strongly considering running.”

Fluke is an activist that has fought hard for women’s rights, and was first brought to the attention of the public when Rush Limbaugh spoke ill of her testimony before Congress on the issue of contraception and insurance coverage in 2012.

Limbaugh referred to Fluke as a slut and a prostitute on his show, and she was a student at Georgetown at the time. As a result of the things that he said about her, she became a voice for the left, and continued to speak out about women’s rights.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfb9f7yFYgw

She was a featured speaker at the Democratic National Convention in 2012, and spoke to the country about the issues that women continue to face.

Before speaking to the House Democratic Policy and Steering Committee, Sandra Fluke was also denied a chance to testify during a Republican-led House hearing on Obamacare’s contraception coverage in 2012.

She is running for a seat that has been occupied by Henry Waxman since 1975, and she is one of three candidates that have filed in the 33rd congressional district.

Fluke is among two women that will be running with other two candidates being state Sen. Ted Lieu and Wendy Greuel, a finalist in last year’s Los Angeles mayoral race. The field is expected to grow even larger with people wanting to grab the seat the Waxman has had for several decades.

Sandra Fluke is a bit different than her opponents in that she is not known as well locally, although she has more of a widespread popularity throughout the country.

Fluke has previously said that she feels more young women need to be in office. As a recent graduate of Georgetown, she thinks that she could help in being a voice for young women, and may end up running for congress in the upcoming election.

  • Sandra Fluke Wants Henry Waxman’s Seat

First off, who is Sandra Fluke? Fluke is a 33-year-old American attorney at law and women’s rights activist. The Pennsylvania native first caught the public’s eye when Republican congressmen blocked her from testifying to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee back in February of 2012. Fluke was attempting to explain to the committee the importance of requiring insurance plans to cover birth control under the Affordable Care Act. She only got the chance to speak to the House Democrats.

In her testimony, Fluke talked about her experience at Georgetown Law School, where the Catholic university refused to pay for birth control as part of the student health plan.

She said the lack of access to contraception caused both her and other female students to suffer “financial, emotional and medical burdens”.

Some people became aware of Sandra Fluke when Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut” on his show while speculating on her sex life. Limbaugh later apologized.

Sandra Fluke is now jumping into the California Democratic race for Rep. Henry Waxman’s soon-to-be vacated Congressional seat.

On Jan. 30, the 74-year-old Waxman announced that he would not seek reelection after serving in the House of Representatives since 1975. His districts encompass Beverly Hills and West Hollywood.

Other contenders for Waxman’s seat include Wendy Greuel (D), who ran for Los Angeles mayor, and state Sen. Ted Lieu (D).The list of candidates seeking to replace Waxman is very long, even spiritual guru and best-selling author Marianne Williamson is running.

Though Fluke has yet to officially announced her candidacy, she did file for the state party’s endorsement, which means she is officially in the race.

On Sunday afternoon, the state party will begin its endorsement process which will wrap up at the state party convention next month.

  • Sandra Fluke: Future Under Romney Humiliating To Women

Sandra Fluke, the former Georgetown Law student who found herself in the national spotlight when Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut” for her stance on birth control coverage under health care laws, took the stage last night at the Democratic National Convention to support President Obama.

Fluke made it clear that she thinks a future under Mitt Romney’s reign would be like taking a step backwards where females are concerned, referencing his failure to speak up on her behalf when Limbaugh blasted her on his radio show.

“Our president, when he hears a young woman has been verbally attacked, thinks of his daughters — not his delegates or donors — and stands with all women,” she said. “And strangers come together, reach out and lift her up. And then, instead of trying to silence her, you invite me here — and give me a microphone — to amplify our voice. That’s the difference.”

A well-known feminist, Fluke has championed causes such as free contraceptives and rights pertaining to women’s health care–including emergency abortions–and pointed out that Romney and his party don’t believe in running a country which holds women’s rights as important.

According to Fluke, the country under Romney’s charge would be “an America in which states humiliate women by forcing us to endure invasive ultrasounds we don’t want and our doctors say we don’t need. An America in which access to birth control is controlled by people who will never use it; in which politicians redefine rape so survivors are victimized all over again; in which someone decides which domestic violence victims deserve help, and which don’t.”

The speech earned her quite a bit of praise, but of course the topics she addressed are ever-controversial and raised some eyebrows in the Republican camp, where she was blasted once again.

  • Limbaugh Advertiser Says Ad Boycott Is “Terrorism”

Mark Stevens advertises on Rush Limbaugh’s show, even after the latest Limbaugh scandal. He remains unbowed by the current advertiser boycott that is decimating Limbaugh’s advertiser base.

Yesterday, Mark Stevens was on the Fox Business Network show Varney and Co. He made some interesting remarks about the current Limbaugh advertiser boycott:

“I just want… The reason why I want … What I’d like to say is that what is not known about this is this is not a boycott. That is a polite term for organized terrorist activity that is descending on people, on businesses that are advertising on Rush, and it’s part of the larger war on business in America today.”

Limbaugh played that excerpt on his show today, adding his own commentary:

“That’s an excellent point. It’s an organized action by the left attempting to terrorize individuals who own businesses and operate radio stations. It’s not angry consumers. These people couldn’t have cared less what happened three weeks ago other than the opportunity it presents them. They’re not even really offended by what happened. This is just an opportunity to execute a plan that they’ve had in their drawer since 2009.”

So, if you are involved in an advertiser boycott against Rush Limbaugh in response to his calling Sandra Fluke a slut, you are a terrorist and you are engaging in a war on business that you have been plotting since 2009.

    Limbaugh continues:

“Have you heard a conservative media member express a desire that the opposition be shut down and silenced or thrown in jail or prosecuted? Do you ever hear that? No. We’re not afraid of discussing what we believe. We know we’ll triumph. We’re not afraid of debating our ideas, and we’re not threatened by virtue of their existence. We’re threatened by what they want to do and we’re threatened by their ideas, but we’re not threatened by their existence. We don’t seek to shut ’em down, but this is all they’ve got.”

Conservatives do not seek to boycott things they do not like. Unless…

You stopped advertising with Rush Limbaugh recently.

    You’re considered a “Hollywood Liberal”.

You’re a gay Republican who is invited to attend one of their meetings.

    You’re Ben and Jerry’s.

You don’t want Rush Limbaugh to own your football team.

    You insult Tim Tebow.

    You’re General Motors.

You’re rumored to offer tacit support to your gay employees.

    You’re a Thin Mint.

You use Ellen Degeneres in your ads.

    You sell Archie comics.

Of course, all this is preposterous. Conservatives can boycott anything they want, no matter whether you like it or not. It is not infringing on anyone’s First Amendment rights. It isn’t terrorism. And it isn’t a war on business when they do it. But, don’t act like it doesn’t happen.

  • Rush Limbaugh Reassures Affiliates It’ll All Be OK

Rush Limbaugh Reassures Affiliates It’ll All Be OK

After all the advertiser upheaval of late, Rush Limbaugh has taken a little time to send a message to his radio show affiliate stations. The recorded reading of a message refers to his calling Sandra Fluke a slut, talks about his apologizing for that, and assures his affiliates that this too shall pass.

Limbaugh has said on his show that he is not concerned in the least about losing advertisers. He says that the advertiser boycott currently underway is an astroturfed effort on the part of Media Matters for America to get him kicked off radio entirely.

Here are the comments Limbaugh made in his recording sent to affiliates. The YouTube video below contains the audio. (Note: text notes on the video are those of the uploader, not of WebProNews).

“We’ve been through a lot together for a long time — you and I. Your role in the development of the program for over two decades is one of the greatest stories of partnership ever told. You’ve taken risks along with me. You’ve reaped the rewards of success and occasionally you’ve felt the sting of opposition that wishes to censor this program using lies, economic pressure and even attempts at legislative action. They’ve all failed. Every single one went bust. And there’s a simple reason why. We tell the truth with passion, with integrity, with humility. We’re not always right, just 99.6 percent of the time. Last week, we experienced that .4 percent. I am truly sorry if it’s created any problems or difficulties for you. I apologized for my choice of words and it’s now time to move on to return once again to making every day FUN, INSPIRING, MOTIVATING, and PROFITABLE too. We win because we entertain and inform. It really isn’t any more complicated than that.

We’re a team, you and I, and I can’t tell you how highly I value our work together. As long as we stick together, we can sail through any storm we encounter especially one based on fiction and pettiness. With truth on our side, I promise you we will prevail. It simply can’t be said often enough, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. I know some days are tougher than others but you have my word that I’ll do my best, very best, always to deliver for YOU the way you deliver for me.

I have forever noted the relevance, the importance, of our affiliate radio stations to my success. All of you helped me become what I am. All of you have enabled me to enjoy this profound life and success that I’ve enjoyed and I will never forget it and I thank you profusely every chance I get from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you again for your support and for all you do day in and day out because as I’ve always said and as I still believe, I couldn’t do this without you.”

  • Rush Limbaugh Launches New Twitter Offensive

Rush Limbaugh Launches New Twitter Offensive

On Thursday, March 15, Rush Limbaugh announced to his listeners that he was starting to tweet. Over the course of a couple of days, he explained Twitter to them. Limbaugh compared Twitter to CB radio and made announcements on the air when he sent out tweets.

“Twitter is almost like digital CB radio now. But all of this social networking, this nonstop texting and tweeting, is like the modern-day CB radio craze.”

Fox News reported that Limbaugh was just now taking to Twitter to “mobilize his Twitter Army”. Limbaugh says that, now that he is on Twitter, the entire medium is now “validated”.

“At any rate, now that I’m on Twitter, that’s been validated. Just as I made Facebook when we announced going to Facebook, these things are now officially big, since I am on both, and we will be tweeting.”

There are a few things about all this that did seem a bit curious. For starters, I’ve been following Rush Limbaugh’s tweets for some time now already, and so have over 88,000 other people. So, what gives with this “starting to tweet” business?

    Limbaugh said on Thursday:

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve got something somewhat curious and important I want to tell you. Over the years I’ve said I don’t tweet, don’t Twitter, and so forth and so on. But I have an account. It’s there. I wanted to establish the account in my name. There are a bunch of fake Rush Limbaugh Twitter accounts. But I’ve decided to actually activate it now and use it for strategic purposes since it has become such an effective means of informing people outside the bounds of this program. Now, I don’t know… Those of you who already tweet, to “follow” me, you would simply find me at @RushLimbaugh. Just follow me @RushLimbaugh. It’s that simple.”

Again, this is the very account I have been following, long before Thursday, March 15. Here are some tweets from that account, which is a verified account.

Now, given Limbaugh’s comparison of Twitter to CB radio for his listeners, it stands to reason that this verified account was probably administered by someone else within the “EIB” fold. Simple enough. So, what was started that was “new”?

    Here’s Limbaugh the next day:

“Have you seen how many stories there are in the news media about my announcement yesterday that I’m gonna be more active on Twitter?… And we are going to be posting a couple more things more things today on Twitter. But Politico, CNN, Reuters, a bunch of other outlets picked up that news. Some even mentioned that my “handle” is at @Limbaugh. See, that’s citizens band radio lingo.”

So, the Twitter handle he meant to announce was @Limbaugh, not @RushLimbaugh. This new account claims to be “The Only Genuine Rush Limbaugh Twitter Feed”. But, as noted earlier, @RushLimbaugh is verified. This is all causing no small amount of confusion:

As of today, Monday March 19, @Limbaugh account now has four tweets and 120,785 followers. The content of those tweets is quite revealing about why Limbaugh is making such a fuss about the newer account. All four of them mention @MMFA, which is the Twitter feed for Media Matters For America, a liberal organization that has been reporting on Limbaugh’s advertiser losses, dead air radio spots and increasing number of PSAs on Limbaugh’s flagship station, WABC. This account is about fighting back against the advertiser boycott. It is about accusing Media Matters of astroturfing or manufacturing the advertiser boycott against Limbaugh. If Limbaugh can paint the boycott as a partisan attack by Media Matters, rather than a genuine grassroots effort by people who were offended by his comments, maybe he can lessen the sting a bit. Maybe he can convince some people that he is being unfairly attacked.

Trouble is, it looks like Limbaugh is out of his depth in this new CB radio. It isn’t a place wehre he can control the conversation. His show takes fewer callers than other radio shows. He hasn’t published a book since 1993, even though both his books were New York Times best sellers. The problem with the printed word is that it can be examined over time. Predictions and claims can be scrutinized. Limbaugh work is usually free of this kind of scrutiny. He even deletes unflattering transcripts of his own comments from his website.

Of course, you can delete tweets that you regret sending. But, if anyone at all sees it before you realize that it was a terrible idea, a simple screen shot of that tweet will still come back to haunt you. Ashton Kutcher and Patricia Heaton know all about that.

But, social media technology has caught up to Limbaugh. His Sandra Fluke comments, for example, have been spread far and wide. Back in 2006, Limbaugh accused Michael J. fox of faking his Parkinson’s symptoms in a televised spot about stem cell research. A Youtube search for “limbaugh michael j fox” nets 189 results. A search for “limbaugh sandra fluke” gets you 734 results. That’s 71 more than when we made the same observation last week.

Likewise, Twitter is no bully pulpit. Twitter talks back.

Forbes Magazine says that Limbaugh’s decision to tweet about this issue is a terrible idea. He is heading into waters that will not likely be kind fo him, and may even hasten his downfall:

“You might think that a guy with a well-established penchant for blurting out things that brought the world down on his head would want to maintain minimum safe distance from a medium that at times seems to exist primarily to lull smart people into committing public acts of stupidity. The list of public figures who’ve self-immolated, or at least self-maimed, with the help of that little blue bird is long, but a cursory rundown includes Anthony Weiner,Gilbert Gottfried, CNN’s Roland Martin, CNN’s Octavia Nasr, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Rashard Mendendall, and NYU professor Nir Rosen.”

Meanwhile, Media Matters For America, for its part, does not seem concerned about Limbaugh’s Twitter Offensive. On the day his new account launched, they fired off 13 tweets displaying Limbaugh’s remarks from his television show days, his comments about women, and his advertiser woes.

  • Howard Stern Talks About Rush Limbaugh

Howard Stern Talks About Rush Limbaugh

Here at the week’s end, after all the further mess Rush Limbaugh has faced this week, we present a clip from the Howard Stern show.

Stern cuts right to the chase about Limbaugh’s current predicament. He says that it’s a mess, but it’s got people talking about him.

Stern also has an opinion on Limbaugh’s birth control argument, during which he called Sandra Fluke a slut.

Maybe Stern will have some words of advice for Limbaugh about transitioning to a satellite radio market if the advertiser boycott keeps up. At the rate Limbaugh is losing ads, he might need a plan B before long. Stern famously made the transition to satellite radio and has been doing just fine ever since. Dr. Laura Schlessenger also abandoned terrestrial radio for a satellite and online setup after being faced with an advertiser boycott that dried up her show’s funds when she compared gay relationships to bestiality.

  • Rush Limbaugh Should Be Fired, Say Most Republicans

Rush Limbaugh Should Be Fired, Say Most Republicans

Right about now, Rush Limbaugh may be wishing he had not called Sandra Fluke a slut. Even after an apology that few think he meant, advertisers have bailed on Limbaugh in record numbers. The flagship station for his show, WABC in New York, have been forced to play unpaid PSAs rather than commercials in most of his ad slots. Unprecedented amounts of dead air in some of the slots have been reported.

And now, even as Limbaugh tries to rally the faithful, Bloomberg has released a new poll that indicates that most Republicans think it’s time for Rush Limbaugh to go away.

Limbaugh has run several segments in the past few weeks with titles containing phrases like “Don’t Doubt Me” and “Everything’s Cool Here” and “Don’t Doubt Our Enthusiasm

But, the numbers are showing things unraveling for Limbaugh. This week, his syndicator Premiere Networks, notified affiliate stations that they did not need to run their obligatory barter spots that offset the cost of Limbaugh’s program in their markets. Those spots are fed from the syndicator, and they simply may not have enough varied material to send after the advertiser walkout. So, they are, in effect, telling the local stations, “You fill those slots. Don’t let there be silence or PSAs.” But, with a sustained local boycott nationwide, it’s getting tougher and tougher to fill the silence, despite what Limbaugh tells his supporters. The proof is in the airtime. Commercials are not there.

Local markets are starting to address the question of whether or not the Limbaugh program should be dropped there. One station, WISN in Milwaukee, posted a blog entry asking that very question. Local journalist Duane Dudek made a couple of salient points that should be looked at in all Limbaugh markets.

Is there a chance that WISN-AM (1130) would ever drop the conservative talk show hosted by Rush Limbaugh?

Unlikely, considering the show is distributed by the station’s owner.

According to Talkers Magazine, Limbaugh’s show reaches 15 million listeners a week and is the top-rated radio talk show in the nation. Second-ranked Sean Hannity has 14 million listeners.

Locally, his ratings picture is not so rosy.

Limbaugh’s show on WISN-AM is 11th-ranked in its time slot. Local conservative talker Jeff Wagner, airing opposite on WTMJ-AM (620), is ranked second, with almost twice as many listeners.

The number of stations Limbaugh is on is commonly listed as 650. However, on his own site, there are only 594 listed. When you start to research those stations to find contacts to speak with, you soon start to realize that many of these are Clear Channel stations, which have no choice in the matter of whether or not it is in their local interest to air Limbaugh’s program.

What would Limbaugh’s next likely move be, if bad comes to worse?

Satellite radio is a possibility, as is an online format. It seems unlikely that Limbaugh will tell his listeners that he has lost so many advertisers that he is forced to leave terrestrial radio. When a boycott against Dr. Laura Schlessinger killed her television show and finally forced her off radio, she told her fans that she was going online so as to regain her First Amendments rights.

  • Rush Limbaugh’s Rights Defended By Window Cleaner

A residential window cleaning company in Knoxville, Tennessee has bought its first radio ad in over ten years of business. In it they talked very little about their service and spent most of the ad defending what they saw as Rush Limbaugh’s free speech rights. The ad states:

Rush Limbaugh recently made some morally wrong statements. A number of dangerous, radical organizations have seized upon those statements to attack the First Amendment. They are harassing advertisers with questionably legal secondary boycotts and threats.

The ad goes on to challenge anyone who would boycott them for their stance.

One commenter on the Youtube version of their ad has gotten many up-votes. He elucidates the rebuttal to the notion that Limbaugh’s free speech rights are being violated. His comment reads:

I have no issue with you guys supporting Rush, but THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CONSTITUTION.
Rush has the right to say or not say whatever he wants.
Advertisers have the right to associate or not associate with whomever they want.
Consumers have the right to support or not support advertisers who choose to associate or distance themselves from Rush.
Nobody’s 1st Amendment rights were threatened.
The 1st Amendment gives you freedom of speech, not freedom from consequences from said speech.

    – TheBaldOneMpls

Here is the ad, which aired on WOKI-FM in Knoxville.

  • Rush Limbaugh’s Comments Worse Than Bill Maher’s?

Ever since Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a slut and a prostitute, talk about civility in political discussion has been all the rage. Limbaugh has faced a backlash of advertiser bailouts, both in his national commercials, as well as at the local level, leaving radio stations across the country to have to evaluate their lineup.

But, some conservatives have been crying foul, saying that this represents a double standard in our political culture. They point to instances when people like Bill Maher have made offensive statements about Sarah Palin. They ask where the outrage was then.

The response usually is that Rush Limbaugh is a political activist and Bill Maher is a comedian. Liberals say there is no parallel there.

Rick Santorum disagrees. When Santorum was asked about his opinion on Rush Limbaugh’s comments, he said, “He’s being absurd, but that’s you know, an entertainer can be absurd. He’s in a very different business than I am.”

Here are both comments. When Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a “dumb twat”, and when Rush Limbaugh called Sandra fluke a “slut” and “prostitute”. What do you think? Is there a difference?

  • Rush Limbaugh Cheers Obama’s Approval Drop

Rush Limbaugh Cheers Obama’s Approval Drop

Rush Limbaugh, rested from a charity golf outing and a day off from his own radio program yesterday, took to the golden EIB microphone to assure his listeners that he was still relevant, still here, and still their El Rushbo.

Flush with the release of polling numbers that indicate President Obama’s rating is down to 41%, Limbaugh took the opportunity to correlate the two for his listeners. While experts are still musing over the causes and ramifications of the drop in the president’s approval, Limbaugh knows why. In a segment where he called NOW President Terry O’Neill the “Head NAG“, Limbaugh said:

“That has to be worse than it was under Carter, folks. And what the women of America want is jobs. They want an expanding economy, so we don’t have to beg the government for their birth control pills.”

While cheering over the drop in approval rating, Limbaugh is not impressed with other recently-released numbers showing growth in jobs.

“The employment numbers being released are not legit. They’re not true. They’re not real. They’re fabricated; they’re massaged.”

Even though news just hit today that Limbaugh’s own syndicator has instructed affiliate stations to remove their barter spots while they deal with departing advertisers, he still claims this as a victory. In fact, he sees a correlation between his own controversy and the drop for Obama.

“Rush Limbaugh, EIB’s gift to Barack Obama. And with a few more “gifts” like this, try to imagine how low Obama’s approval numbers will be then.”

  • Rush Limbaugh’s Perfect Storm Brewing

    Rush Limbaugh’s Perfect Storm Brewing

Rush Limbaugh has ticked people off before. In fact, much of his approach to his brand of entertainment is to create an us-versus-them atmosphere where liberals are demonized. Therefore, he’s made a lot of enemies.

Most of the time, Limbaugh’s acerbic comments simply bounce around in the echo chamber that is Dittoland. Terms like “feminazi”, “club Gitmo”, and “talent on loan from God” never make it past the fan club barrier. But, sometimes Limbaugh’s foot-in-mouth antics get him mention in mainstream media.

Such was the case when he accused Michael J. Fox of faking his Parkinson’s Disease symptoms in a commercial spot he did about stem cell research.

That was a blow too low, and the public bit back. It was revealed that Fox’s symptoms were a result of his adjusting his medication up, not down, to help control his symptoms. The shaking is a symptom of the medication, not of the disease. But, Limbaugh recovered and plowed right ahead.

His airing of parodies like “Barack the Magic Negro” have raised cries of racism, but he has pressed on unfazed.

His forays into television have been short-lived and ill-conceived. There was his own half-hour show, now long gone. Once, he was a guest host on Pat Sajak’s (also short-lived) talk show. The audience responded so vocally to his usual rhetoric that he had to go to commercial twice to calm things, and finally cleared the room entirely, left speaking to no one.

But, still the Limbaugh machine rolled on.

Now, with the more recent controversy around his comments about Sandra Fluke, Limbaugh finds himself in the muck again. But, this time things seem to be different. Rush Limbaugh may be facing a perfect storm, the likes of which have not occurred before. It’s not so much about the notoriety of this particular scandal itself. He has called people worse. Rather it is a combination of factors that are conspiring to hit him where it hurts.

    1) Social Media.

With every year that passes, social media becomes a bigger force in communication between people, driving movements and responses more than ever before. The Sandra Fluke scandal has caught fire on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Limbaugh’s comments are easily reproduced, linked and shared for all to see. A Youtube search for “limbaugh michael j fox” nets 189 results. That happened in 2006. A search for “limbaugh sandra fluke” gets you 663 results. That happened last month. It is becoming easier every day for people to pass along what Limbaugh says, to pass along what they think about it, and to pass along what they intend to do about it.

    2) Focus of Opposition.

In the past, people concentrated their efforts on shaming Limbaugh. That had no effect. they debated and emailed their friends. But, Limbaugh fans are largely unmoved. They’ve been told for 24 years that the mainstream media will lie about their hero. He has their full attention to spin the story however he wants, and even to erase it when he sees fit.

Some try to stop Limbaugh through litigation or prosecution, or by appealing to the FCC. This is a wasted effort that only strengthens the resolve of Limbaugh and his fans. It becomes a free speech issue then, rather than an issue of simple decency and shame.

Sometimes, people have tried aiming their ire at the local radio stations that carry Limbaugh’s program, calling the stations, sending emails. That has had little or no effect. A station is not about to drop the most popular program they have when advertisers are paying handsomely for it. It’s all about commercial sales.

But now, the focus has shifted. Now, the opposition is going after the advertisers. They are following the money all the way back to the wallet. They are boycotting those advertisers, naming and shaming them if they support Limbaugh’s speech. Apparently, this is working.

    3) Competition.

Up to this point, there has been no alternative to Limbaugh No one is stepping up to fill that noon-to-three time slot that he has held since 1988. No conservative option for those people who might be tiring of the controversy and divisiveness has come forward. Until now.

Mike Huckabee has made himself a familiar, respected name since his failed presidential bid four years ago. He has been a regular on Fox News and a commentator that many on both sides of the proverbial aisle are willing to engage with. He is launching a new radio show in Limbaugh’s time slot. His motto is: Less Confrontation. More Conversation.

Some argue that Huckabee is no match for Limbaugh. They say he would never appeal to Limbaugh’s base the same way. But, perhaps that is exactly why he has a shot. He appeals to those who are not Dittoheads. He is a conservative voice, but a reasonable one. He spends far less time alienating and more time engaging in civil discourse. And, he hasn’t called anyone a slut, doesn’t have an advertiser boycott raging against him, and isn’t being pilloried in every form of social media.

Limbaugh’s syndicator has already made the unprecedented move of pulling their barter spots from radio. And his affiliate stations can’t keep up the war of attrition in their local markets.

With an alternative like Huckabee, a focused boycott aiming at the wallet, and social media connections to facilitate it all, Limbaugh may not be able to weather this storm.

  • Rush Limbaugh Syndicator Cancels Ads

In a curious move, the syndicator of Rush Limbaugh’s program has announced that they are suspending certain national commercials that normally air during the show for two weeks.

According to radio-info.com, Premiere Networks sent a memo to the traffic managers at all its affiliate stations telling them that they were making a change for the weeks of March 12 and March 19. Here is the text of the memo sent to stations:

“We are suspending the requirement to run barter spots for two weeks, March 12th and March 19th, for our News/Talk affiliates only.

“Please replace/re-traffic any Premiere barter spots immediately. Contractual requirements to run barter spots are being suspended for these two weeks only. Replace them with Lifelock and Lear Financial or a local spot of your choice.

“This suspension does not apply to in-program commercial provided by Premiere within any of its live news/talk programming.”

To better clarify what is happening here, it is important to understand what kinds of ads run on radio stations, and particularly within the Limbaugh program.

Normally, a talk show is offered free of charge to a radio station, with the deal stating that the company providing or syndicating that show gets a certain number of commercial spots to air during their own show. The rest are free for the local stations to fill from their own client roster. Thus, you normally hear a mix of National and local commercials in a show. You will also occasionally hear public service announcements because stations are required by the Federal Communications Commission to run these.

Limbaugh’s program is different. Premiere Networks charges stations to use the Limbaugh show. They also still have national ads within the show itself, often voiced by Limbaugh. In major markets, this nets Limbaugh millions of dollars a year. However, since smaller markets could not afford this for long, there is an arrangement to run additional “barter ads” to offset the subscription cost. These barter ads are what the memo is referencing. As for public service announcements, usually you would rarely hear a PSA in a program as thickly advertiser-laden as Limbaugh’s.

When asked about the purpose of this move, Premiere responded:

“This memo was sent to traffic managers of news/talk affiliates as part of Premiere’s overall strategy to update our processes and services to better meet our clients’ needs.”

There have been reports lately there have been a large number of unpaid PSAs for the United Negro College Fund, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Save the Children, the American Heart Association, Feeding America and other causes. Then, the American Heart association asked for its PSAs to be excluded from the Limbaugh time slots. There are also occurrences of dead air during commercial breaks.

How any of these incidents might factor in to Premiere’s decision to pull barter ads is anyone’s guess. Some are calling it a sign that the talk radio giant has had his bell rung by recent advertiser boycotts following his remarks about Sandra Fluke, even after an apology. Limbaugh has incited the wrath of his detractors before, but this is the first time his syndicator has been forced to take a step like. They say it is due to an “overall strategy to update our processes and services”.

  • Rush Limbaugh Admits Apology Faked [spoof]

The following is a spoof. It is not real. It was put together with bits and pieces of Limbaugh comments from multiple shows. The sole purpose of including it here is to show that one can make a person sound like they support any number of stances if you just slice and dice what they say.

Rush Limbaugh did issue an apology for his remarks about “Susan” [sic] Fluke. Since then, he has even removed the transcript of those remarks from his website, erasing them from his official record forever.

Even still, he is facing an advertiser backlash like he has never had before. He claims it’s no big deal. And, he has loads of supporters behind him. But, he is also facing a challenge to his radio supremacy from Mike Huckabee, who wants to have a more civil discourse.

Enjoy this fake confession. It’s fake.

  • Rush Limbaugh Supporters Rally Around Him

Rush Limbaugh Supporters Rally Around Him

Despite the lashing Rush Limbaugh has taken lately for his remarks about Sandra Fluke, the advertisers he has lost, the scandal that still hangs over the whole thing, his fans are hanging tough. From the classic Mega-Dittoes faithful have come Twitter campaigns like #rallyfor rush, aimed at making those advertisers who bailed on their hero pay dearly for their sins.

Netflix finds itself in a particular quandary. After coming under boycott for advertising on Limbaugh’s program, they lost members until they issued statements and clarified that they were pulling out. Limbaugh fans retaliated by canceling their own memberships with Netflix. Then, when Netflix ads continued to run on Limbaugh’s show – possibly leftover buys – the boycott hit them again.

Online backup service, Carbonite, had seen stock declines for months. After issuing a statement and leaving Limbaugh, their stock continued to drop. Many Limbaugh fans celebrated, claiming responsibility.

Limbaugh supporters have taken to Twitter. Here is a collection of pro-Limbaugh tweets, including those by some non-fans who came to his defense.

  • Rush Limbaugh Losing Radio Show Crown To Huckabee?

Since Rush Limbaugh has been under fire for his comments about Sandra Fluke, it hasn’t just been advertisers who are heading for the hills. People who had supported Limbaugh in the past are starting to wonder what he’s up to. Many of them have grown increasingly uncomfortable with what he says on his show sometimes. But, In the 12:00-3:00 time slot, Limbaugh is the only game in town.

    Until now.

Starting April 9, 2012, Gov. Mike Huckabee is throwing his hat into the arena. His new radio show will air in exactly the same time slot as Limbaugh on the Cumulus radio networks. Huckabee’s aim to unseat Limbaugh is apparent from his shows tag line: More Conversation. Less Confrontation.

Rush Limbaugh has a huge conservative fan base that are used to him adding humor and very blunt talk when discussing his point of view. Some who only listen occasionally don’t see the humor and take everything he says literally. They also don’t appreciate the blunt talk. Prior to Limbaugh and Fox News and then the internet there weren’t conservatives with national platforms in the media.

Rush’s attacks on liberalism daily has worn on liberals over the years, hence the backlash over his comment about Sandra Fluke. This is their opportunity to strike back and coincidentally Huckabee’s opportunity to step up to the plate for conservatives with a nicer and gentler radio program. Huckabee plans to challenge Rush by attracting those that seek a less pointed discussion.

Huckabee aims to soften that rhetoric, get people talking again. And, his brand of conservative approach could be the very place that advertisers, radio stations and frustrated conservatives can go as an alternative to Limbaugh’s heated rhetoric. Huckabee could even make the notion of conservative talk radio palatable to progressives who don’t mind a good debate, so long as it is civil. Time will tell.

  • Rush Limbaugh Doesn’t Understand Birth Control

Let’s set aside differences with Rush Limbaugh on political grounds. Let’s look at pure, provable facts only for a moment. Even the most ardent of Limbaugh fans should be critical of his statements recently, if not out of decency, then out of a love of truth and accuracy. One of the biggest problems with Limbaugh’s slandering of Sandra Fluke is that he is also misinforming all his listeners, and in doing so could endanger the health of some people who listen to him and believe his outlandish, Dark Ages claims.

If Sandra Fluke had been talking about condoms, rather than birth control pills, Limbaugh’s assertion that she wanted someone to pay for her to have sex might hold just a little bit of water. (It would fall apart on several other fronts, but to those another time.) The biggest error Limbaugh makes is that he equates taking “birth control pills” with having sex. And, that is absolutely misinformed and ignorant.

The problem here is that these medications are commonly marketed and referred to as “birth control” when, in reality, they are hormone therapies. As such, they a have a wide array of common uses apart from preventing pregnancy. These are not rare, occasional applications, either. They are frequently-prescribed uses for “The Pill”.

A basic definition of how birth control pills work, from WebMD.

Hormonal contraceptives (the pill, the patch, and the vaginal ring) all contain a small amount of synthetic estrogen and progestin hormones. These hormones work to inhibit the body’s natural cyclical hormones to prevent pregnancy… Hormonal contraceptives also change the cervical mucus to make it difficult for the sperm to find an egg.

Due to the presence of the hormones in the pills, they are widely used to treat such conditions as:

      Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
      Endometriosis
Absence of periods (for various reasons)
      Menstrual cramps
      Premenstrual syndrome
      Heavy menstrual periods
      Acne
      Prevention of anemia

Limbaugh’s lack of knowledge on this, or lack of caring to inform his listeners, has caused him to do something very dangerous: he has mischaracterized users of birth control pills as promiscuous, immoral and free-loaders. This is made even worse when you consider that much of what Sandra Fluke actually said before that House panel had nothing to do with pregnancy or sex. If you have not read her comments yourself, take a moment to form an educated opinion on this matter. Among her comments she said:

We are all grateful for the new regulation that will meet the critical health care needs of so many women.

Just last week, a married female student told me that she had to stop using contraception because she and her husband just couldn’t fit it into their budget anymore.

A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome, and she has to take prescription birth control to stop cysts from growing on her ovaries. Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown’s insurance because it’s not intended to prevent pregnancy. Unfortunately, under many religious institutions and insurance plans, it wouldn’t be. There would be no exception for other medical needs… For my friend and 20% of the women in her situation, she never got the insurance company to cover her prescription. Despite verifications of her illness from her doctor, her claim was denied repeatedly on the assumption that she really wanted birth control to prevent pregnancy. She’s gay. So clearly polycystic ovarian syndrome was a much more urgent concern than accidental pregnancy for her.

One woman told us doctors believe she has endometriosis, but that can’t be proven without surgery. So the insurance has not been willing to cover her medication – the contraception she needs to treat her endometriosis.

Recently, another woman told me that she also has polycystic ovarian syndrome and she’s struggling to pay for her medication and is terrified to not have access to it.

Many of the women whose stories I’ve shared today are Catholic women. So ours is not a war against the church. It is a struggle for the access to the health care we need.

In fact, one of the most damning pieces of evidence is what Ms. Fluke did not mention: her own desire for pregnancy prevention. In fact, for all Rush Limbaugh could know from her statements, Ms. Fluke could be celibate. He insulted her with no regard for the content of her statements. Rather, he said she went “before a congressional committee and essentially [said] that she must be paid to have sex.” She said nothing that could even remotely be construed to mean that. She spoke about diseases and the needs of others.

Rush Limbaugh’s half-hearted apology, which he amended to mean that he wished he hadn’t sounded like ” a liberal”, missed the point as badly as his original statement. No one wants him to pay for anyone’s contraception. They want the insurance that they themselves pay for to do it.

Limbaugh should do more than apologize. He should readdress the issue and set the record straight after he actually reads the testimony. Or, he can push play below.

  • Rush Limbaugh Former Advertiser Issues Statement

Rush Limbaugh Former Advertiser Issues Statement

Regal Assets, a gold investment firm, used to advertise with Rush Limbaugh’s program. Now they have stopped. Tyler Gallagher, CEO of Regal assets, has come forward to tell why his company has withdrawn their support for Limbaugh.

Limbaugh has been under heavy fire from the public after he called Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” following her appearance before a House of Representatives panel to discuss birth control. Fluke had argued that providing birth control coverage in insurance is important because of the many non-pregnancy issues that such medications address including ovarian cysts and the like. Limbaugh took the opportunity to call her names and insist that she and others like her post videos of themselves having sex online. He issued an apology for his comments, but many have said they were half-hearted and were mitigated by his statements to his audience on his radio show the following Monday. Advertisers have been fleeing his program, leaving his flagship station WABC to have to populate most of his commercial spots with free public service announcements. Limbaugh has said that the exodus of local advertisers can not affect him, but that statement does not bear scrutiny.

Here is Gallagher’s statement to the press, in full.

As CEO of Regal Assets, LLC, I want to personally respond to the Rush Limbaugh scandal and the decision our company made last week to pull our advertising from Limbaugh’s show. We want to make it very clear that this was by no means a political decision; this was simply a moral choice.

The attacks on Sandra Fluke were unwarranted and, we believe, intentionally inflammatory. Realizing the Limbaugh show no longer fell in line with our core values as a company, we had to take action in light of this scandal and respond appropriately, and that led us to our decision to remove our advertising from the show.

We do not see Rush Limbaugh as a bad or evil person but as someone who misjudged his own destructive power. As we step into 2012, this is no way to treat each other. We are more evolved than that, and I hope at the end of the day we can all learn from this situation.

I personally do not believe any company should support the type of slanderous, defaming attacks that came from Limbaugh, whether or not they agree with the other side of the issue. There is a far more civilized way to communicate, and we wish Limbaugh had taken the high road with the Sandra Fluke topic.

We urge people to see the bigger picture of the scandal, as it is not about supporting one side’s argument but supporting each other as a whole and not condoning that type of abuse toward anyone. If we lose business because of our decision to do what is morally right, then so be it. Moral substance and dignity are more precious than the almighty dollar.

We at Regal Assets want to personally thank everyone who has sent positive feedback for our choice in this matter. It warms our souls to know people like this exist. For the backlash we have received over the past week from some, we urge those individuals to look past the politics and focus on the way Sandra Fluke was condemned and attacked. Put yourself in her shoes, and if you’re a parent with a daughter, imagine it was your daughter who was addressed in that inappropriate manner. I am sure if you honestly evaluate the incident, like we have at Regal Assets, your stance on the scandal will change.

  • Rush Limbaugh Defends Joseph Kony As a Christian

Back in October 2011, Rush Limbaugh probably had no way of knowing that one of his talking point stories would end up blowing up as big as it did. This was well before he called Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute”. This story is completely unrelated and is just now coming home to roost.

On October 14, 2011 Limbaugh spent some time talking about a report by Jake Tapper at ABC news that President Obama had sent 100 troops to Uganda to help fight the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), which is Joseph Kony’s troops. Limbaugh derided the decision, which people of any political stripe might agree with. But, he spent a considerable amount of time using the opportunity to paint President Obama as siding with Muslims against Christians. His argument was that the group was called the “Lord’s” Resistance Army, thus obviously making it “Christian”. Therefore, Obama was fighting against Christians.

Now, a few months later, the Kony 2012 movement is in full swing and people all over the world are becoming aware of what a madman Joseph Kony is, what kinds of abuses are carried out by his men, and the extent of the evil he perpetrates under the banner of the “Lord’s” Resistance Army.

An archive search at RushLimbaugh.com reveals only one search result for the term “joseph kony“. It is the transcript of Limbaugh’s October 14 remarks entitled “Obama Invades Uganda, Targets Christians“. Here is a relevant portion of those remarks, but you should go view the entire thing yourself, in context.

Now, up until today, most Americans have never heard of the combat Lord’s Resistance Army. And here we are at war with them. Have you ever heard of Lord’s Resistance Army, Dawn? How about you, Brian? Snerdley, have you? You never heard of Lord’s Resistance Army? Well, proves my contention, most Americans have never heard of it, and here we are at war with them. Lord’s Resistance Army are Christians. It means God. I was only kidding. Lord’s Resistance Army are Christians. They are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Obama has sent troops, United States troops to remove them from the battlefield, which means kill them. That’s what the lingo means, “to help regional forces remove from the battlefield,” meaning capture or kill.

So that’s a new war, a hundred troops to wipe out Christians in Sudan, Uganda, and — (interruption) no, I’m not kidding. Jacob Tapper just reported it. Now, are we gonna help the Egyptians wipe out the Christians? Wouldn’t you say that we are? I mean the Coptic Christians are being wiped out, but it wasn’t just Obama that supported that. The conservative intelligentsia thought it was an outbreak of democracy. Now they’ve done a 180 on that, but they forgot that they supported it in the first place. Now they’re criticizing it.

Lord’s Resistance Army objectives. I have them here. “To remove dictatorship and stop the oppression of our people.” Now, again Lord’s Resistance Army is who Obama sent troops to help nations wipe out. The objectives of the Lord’s Resistance Army, what they’re trying to accomplish with their military action in these countries is the following: “To remove dictatorship and stop the oppression of our people; to fight for the immediate restoration of the competitive multiparty democracy in Uganda; to see an end to gross violation of human rights and dignity of Ugandans; to ensure the restoration of peace and security in Uganda, to ensure unity, sovereignty, and economic prosperity beneficial to all Ugandans, and to bring to an end the repressive policy of deliberate marginalization of groups of people who may not agree with the LRA ideology.” Those are the objectives of the group that we are fighting, or who are being fought and we are joining in the effort to remove them from the battlefield.

The government of Uganda claims that Lord’s Resistance Army only has 500 or a thousand soldiers in total. So what’s the threat? If that’s the maximum size of their army, what’s the threat? A thousand soldiers? Now, 1100 soldiers because we have sent a hundred. I’m not making this up. This is Jacob Tapper. ABC News had reported that Obama got a letter off to John Boehner a couple days ago announcing this. It’s just for a few months until the Lord’s Resistance Army is eradicated. That’s all. Just a few months. Not much of a threat.

  • Rush Limbaugh’s Advertiser Troubles Via SNL

Rush Limbaugh’s Advertiser Troubles Via SNL

Rush Limbaugh’s recent remarks about University of Georgetown student Sandra Fluke, calling her a “slut” and a “prostitute”, have continued to come back to haunt him. He blogged a Saturday apology, then explained to his listeners on Monday that he had apologized because he realized that his statements made him sound like a liberal. The debate rages on about whether this comment and the fallout from it might be the end for Limbaugh. His opponents have organized an advertiser boycott that claims to have taken out dozens of ad-buyers. Limbaugh says those local ad buys are inconsequential to him and will not affect his business. Our analysis of that statement says it is not true. Local ad buys affect the local stations, which cannot sustain the kind of advertiser exodus that is happening. At WABC radio recently, the flagship station for Limbaugh’s program, over half of Limbaugh’s commercial spots were replaced with free public service announcements, a sure sign in the radio world that advertisers were leaving and staying away.

Some businesses are coming forward to say that they will gladly advertise with Limbaugh, but he is denying those since they are for such websites as AshleyMadison, which promisses to help people find a way to cheat on their spouses.

Into this fracas steps Saturday Night Live, famous for its impersonations of other political figures, including President Obama and Sarah Palin. The cold open piece pokes fun at the advertiser troubles Limbaugh has. SNL cast member Taran Killiam plays Limbaugh in the piece.

  • Rush Limbaugh Website Deletes Fluke Remarks

Politico reported today that something is amiss at Rush Limbaugh’s website. The Limbaugh site has an archive. That archive has a search function. So, in theory, one should be able to go to Limbaugh’s site, search the archive for “sllut”, and get the transcribed comments he made about Sandra Fluke.

    You would think.

Limbaugh’s original comments on February 28 were this:

“What does it say about the college coed Susan [sic] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex? What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex.”

But, searching for “slut” in the Limbaugh transcript archive gets you “No results found. Please try another search.” Curious.

    Let’s try searching “prostitute“.

That gets you a whole page full of results returned, but let’s poke into a couple of them. The original slandering of Sandra Fluke came in a February 28 segment titled “Butt Sisters are Safe from Newt and Rick“. If we click on that, we are whisked away to… a blank page.

Let’s try the followup piece from February 29, called “Left Freaks Out Over My Fluke Remarks“. Again, blank page.

The first question I would ask is, “Is Limbaugh removing evidence of what happened?” That makes little sense. There are videos and audio copies of it all over YouTube. Even on his own webiste, there are transcripts of other pieces from the show that reference the scandal. Like this one called “The Dumb Don’t Know They’re Dumb“. This one, in an Inception-like moment, quotes a sound bite that is playing Limbaugh’s sound bite about fluke. The archived transcript has all of that.

I could not find any other broken page references in the archive. Go give it a search yourself. Good luck. It is one of the most poorly-laid-out database searches I’ve seen. Not user-friendly at all.
