Samsung Galaxy S4s are Free on Black Friday (Whoa)

The day after Thanksgiving could be your day to finally upgrade your phone: The most recent edition of the highly popular Samsung smartphone, the Galaxy S4 will be free on Black Friday.

Of course, this is with a two-year contract only. This is still a great deal, especially for those who have been looking at their Galaxy S3s with a little less love since the S4 has been released.

The Black Friday Best Buy and Walmart ads both explain their unique ways of providing this offer. At Walmart, you pay $99, but they in turn give you a $100 gift card. Yes, it is only a dollar back, but that is still an extra dollar that you didn’t have before! Plus, receiving a gift card could also scratch an item off of your Christmas list. All in all, kudos to Walmart’s ingenious marketing plan to keep the money in-house with a little extra incentive.

Best Buy keeps it a bit simpler, but with their own advantages: If you get your Galaxy S4 from Best Buy, you have the choice of using Verizon, AT&T and Sprint as your carrier. Best Buy is also the only place where you can get the attractive Blue Arctic color.

It’s pretty hard to say that this isn’t a great deal. While this probably means that the Galaxy S5 is coming soon, which it definitely is according to some, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a great phone that normally costs over $200. If you or someone you know needs an upgrade, Black Friday might be the best time to do it.

  • Samsung Announces Dual Duplex-Mode Galaxy S4s

Samsung Announces Dual Duplex-Mode Galaxy S4s

As smartphone manufacturers look to China as the next large market for smartphone sales, Samsung this week announced what it claims is the first dual duplex-mode smartphone. The Korean Manufacturer will be releasing versions of the its Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 that are compatible with both TDD-LTE (Time Division Duplex) and FDD-LTE (Frequency Division Duplex) wireless modes. Samsung claims the devices will seamlessly switch between the LTE technologies.

Most current LTE networks are based on the FDD-LTE channel access method, which uses different carrier frequencies for transmitters and receivers. TDD-LTE is a competing LTE channel access method that separates outbound and inbound signals, making it more ideal for crowded LTE networks. TDD-LTE is expected to gain adoption in the near future, particularly in the U.S. and China. In addition to consumers being able to switch between the LTE methods, Samsung envisions mobile providers using both TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE to manage data traffic on their networks.

“Samsung continues to accelerate global LTE market deployment, addressing technical challenges faster than anyone else,” said JK Shin, co-CEO of Samsung. “With today’s TDD/FDD LTE seamless handover devices announcement, Samsung again demonstrates the company’s commitment to driving better, more convenient customer experiences. The first commercially available TDD/FDD seamless handover devices will allow customers to fully enjoy the benefits of fast mobile data communications no matter where they are.”

  • Samsung’s New Icelandic Commercial is Quite Disturbing

Samsung’s New Icelandic Commercial is Quite Disturbing

Last fall, shortly after the release of the Galaxy S III smartphone, it seemed that Samsung was on top of its advertising game. The Korean company was skewering its main competition, Apple, in commercials designed to make fun of Apple devotees and art installations designed to mock Apple’s half-baked maps app. It was odd, then, that the company’s ads for its Galaxy S4 smartphone were a bit more conservative.

That may have changed, however, if a new Samsung ad for Iceland is any indication. Calling the ad avant-garde might be generous – what it really is is bizarre. It begins with a man contemplating an Apple (the fruit, that is). The symbolism is clear, but the man’s existential angst over a red fruit is left unexplained. Switching to a Galaxy S4 appears to give the man incredible dancing prowess, several lady-friends in balaclavas, and a goat. It all culminates in the man taking a bit out of an Apple, which is easily the most straightforward portion of the ad:

Magna Carta Holy Grail: Jay-Z’s New Album Coming to Galaxy Phones

Since making a name for himself in rap, Jay-Z has gone on to become one of the most successful entertainers in history, making millions as a producer, investor, and, most recently, a sports agent. That doesn’t mean he’s given up on his musical aspirations, however.

Jay-Z this week announced his latest album, titled Magna Carta Holy Grail. The rap star revealed the release date of the album in a post to his Twitter account:

That isn’t quite the whole story, though.

Jay-Z has partnered with Samsung to offer the album for free to owners of Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones. A mobile app will be released in the Google Play store on June 24th. The first million Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy Note II users to download the app will receive Magna Carta Holy Grail for free on July 4th. The album’s worldwide release date is July 7th.

  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Ships With Over 7GB of Software Pre-Installed

The U.S. launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is imminent and Android fans are clamoring to get their hands on the Korean manufacturer’s latest flagship Android device. Anyone hoping to use the phone to store pictures, audio, and video, however, had better have an SD card handy.

Geek.com got its hands on an S4 this week and are now reporting that the smartphone will come with over 7GB of Android and Samsung software pre-installed. For perspective, that’s nearly half of the storage found in the 16GB version of the S4.

It’s been clear for a while that Samsung has been focusing its development and advertising on software. The company is trying to differentiate itself from other smartphone manufacturers now that Android device hardware has caught up with, and in some cases exceeded, Apple’s iPhone. Eye-catching software is a way to do that, but with it comes software bloat and apps that seem nice but are rarely used in practice.

The good thing is, Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones are also popular among the Android modding community. Modders have already rooted some versions of the Galaxy S4 and are working to unlock the bootloader for versions of the phone that are locked by U.S. carriers (such as AT&T). Once rooted, Samsung’s Galaxy devices have access to a wide variety of roms to choose from that do not come pre-loaded with crapware.

Samsung Won’t Let Gangnam Style Rest in Peace

Gangnam Style, as impressive as it was (in terms of sheer global reach), it pretty much over as a thing, a fad, and craze – whatever. As a culture, we’ve run it into the ground. Plus, Psy already has another song out. We’re not hating on Gangnam Style, we’re just mercifully pronouncing it dead, having lived a good life.

But Samsung has decided to kill it again. At a Galaxy S4 launch event in India, the smartphone makers tapped Bollywood star Ranveer Singh to lead a Gangnam Style reimagining that replaces most of the lyrics with Galaxy S4 spec praise. Why, oh why?
