Sons of Anarchy Kills Major Character

Before you read on, be wary that this article contains major spoilers and plot point discussion for the FX series Sons of Anarchy. If you haven’t seen the show, or the most recent episode, I recommend you stop reading… now.

Leading into this week, the boys of SAMCRO were prepared to end their gun-dealing relationship with the real IRA by liberating ex-president Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) from an in-transit prison truck. Morrow was going to take over position of “supervisor of Irish gun distribution” on the West Coast.

Well, that didn’t really go as planned. When the Sons liberated Clay, they executed IRA gun-dealer Galen O’Shea, and staged a firefight in an airport office, where a slow-paced scene showcased the emotional execution of Morrow’s character.

EntertainmentWeekly caught up with both showrunner Kurt Sutter and Ron Perlman.

When asked about the decision to kill Clay now, Sutter said, “Ultimately he made choices that hurt a lot of other people, that came back to hurt him. And for me, the betrayal of Gemma at the end of last season was the thing that broke him. Once she broke that connection, once she said okay, you’re too despicable for me and to the point where she betrayed him, then it really became the beginning of the end for him.”

Sutter added, “I didn’t suddenly expect people to turn around and have compassion for this guy, though I think a lot of people were wondering, oh, yes, it’s all a plan. It’s all a play. He’s got something else up his sleeve because that’s who Clay is… He really does want to do the right thing by Gemma. And so, that by [the 10th episode] when you think okay, they’ve done everything they could to keep this guy alive and they’re going to keep him alive … when you have some sense that maybe you don’t hate Clay as much as you used to … that’s when we kill Clay.”

Perlman likened the role to that of Claudius in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a story Sutter has admitted he borrowed from. “Claudius doesn’t make it to Act 5,” Perlman said, “so I was ready for this.”

When the interviewer asked Perlman about the Hamlet connection, he said “Anything you’re going to assume about Sons of Anarchy is pure speculation. We’ve already seen that Hamlet is the superstructure … the guy who kills the king and marries the queen and takes over the crown. The stepson who’s trying to put all this together with the help of these voices that are visiting him in the form of the manuscript.”

“When you put on that crown, some sh– happens and it ain’t pretty and it ain’t ordered and it almost controls you,” Perlman said of Jax’s ascension. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the seventh season is going to really shine a light on the price that Jax Teller plays, simply because he’s risen to this level of power.”

  • ‘Sons of Anarchy’: Robocop Joins For Sixth Ride

Sons of Anarchy is one of those television shows you just can’t look away from. Writer, producer, and creator Kurt Sutter was a writer for FX’s hit cop drama The Shield, which effectively cleaned house each year at the Emmy’s, so it was hardly surprising when the retiring of Michael Chiklis’ anti-cop Vic Mackey brought a new series of twisted characters to traverse our televisions in search of fortune and glory. Sons has certainly done that over the years, and while the season five ratings were strong enough in the target demographic, season six is shaping up to knock it out of the park.

Peter Weller, known for his iconic voice and portrayal of Robocop in the late ’80s, will be joining the fray as a former cop who works at the Stockton port, the Hollywood Reporter says. Already a featured director of several episodes in the series as well as episodes of Monk and Hawaii Five-O, Weller makes the opposite journey of Adam Arkin, who joined the cast as a white supremacist character and eventually became a featured director.

AMENDED: As to where the plot of the new season might take the enigmatic motorcycle gang, we can expect the story to center around Jax solidifying political control within the club for his presidency, Tara’s experiences after being imprisoned by the police for Gemma’s manipulation, the expected fallback from Bobby’s resignation as vice-president, and possibly a final end to Clay Morrow. The recently released season six promo video seem to hint at an excessively violent season, and Sutter himself has been quoted as saying upcoming episodes will be some of the “most violent” in the history of the show, a bold claim indeed.

If you’re interested in watching the latest episode of Sons of Anarchy as soon as it airs, season six will premiere on September 10 at 10 P.M. EST on FX.

  • Sons Of Anarchy Season 4 Hits Netflix Instant

Sons Of Anarchy Season 4 has finally made its way to Netflix Instant for your streaming pleasure (in the U.S.). This might have been more useful a couple months ago, as Season 5 premiered on September 11th, but better late than never.

In a post on its official blog, Netflix Director of Content Acquisition, Allie Goss, writes:

We first brought you Season 1 in 2011, introducing Jax and the rest of SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original) crew to Netflix in this Hamlet-influenced drama (yes, that’s Shakespeare’s Hamlet). Since then, existing fans have been reliving the drama by watching their favorite episodes, while others are discovering the motorcycle-outlaw adventure for the first time, catching up on Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3. Whichever group you fall into, we’re glad you’re enjoying the ride!

All 14 episodes from the fourth season are now available to stream. Of course, seasons 1-3 are still available as well, so fans old and new will have hours of SOA to indulge in at their convenience.

Netflix revealed last week that it had 25.1 million domestic streaming members in Q3 (20% more than it had the year before).
