  • French Designer Hints At “Revolutionary” Apple Product On The Way

We expect that the rest of 2012 will bring plenty of new announcements from Apple. This year, they already launched the new iPad, and we still have a new iPhone to look forward to as well as whatever they unveil at the Worldwide Developers Conference (unless those last two coincide).

And now, according to a prominent French designer, something substantial is coming in about 8 months.

Philippe Starck is a well-known designer who has a pretty wide-ranging portfolio including homes, interiors, furniture, and even household items like toothbrushes. This week, he told French news radio that he’s been working with Apple on something that is “revolutionary.” He also added that it’s about 8 months away from release.

He went on the tell French newspaper Le Figaro that (Google Translation) “he regularly met in California [with] Steve Jobs, Apple’s legendary founder who died last October. ‘For seven years I came to see him once a month in Palo Alto and elsewhere I go Monday, because even though he is dead, now I will see his wife. We liked to talk all things interesting,’ he said.”

So what the hell is he talking about? Never mind the date, could Starck have any say on the upcoming iPhone? Most reports indicate that we can expect that some time in September or October.

Actually, eight months from now coincides with some other rumors we’ve heard about the long-awaited iTV, Apple’s television hardware project. Last month, we heard that the iTV was gearing up for summer production, and slated to be released in December, just in time for the holiday season. A later report amended that prediction slightly, pushing the date back to early 2013.

According to the recent Walter Isaacson biography of Steve Jobs, Apple’s iTV was one of his last projects he focused on before his death – reportedly saying (now famously) that he had “cracked it.” Could Starck’s imput have something to do with an upcoming iTV? Hardmac thinks that it might have to do with a remote control for the future iTV. “This is particularly in this area that innovation in design and ergonomic are needed, and Starck and his team are known for that,” they say.

We’ll just have to wait and see if Starck actually has his hand in any of Apple’s “revolutionary” new products.

  • Wii U Parts Priced At $180, Won’t Sell For Under $300 [Rumor]

Brand new consoles usually contain components that cost far more than the actual price of the console. Microsoft and Sony were both selling their respective current generation consoles at a loss for years while making up for it with game sales. Nintendo, on the other hand, has always sold Wii for a profit since the components that made up that system never amounted to the $250 launch price. It looks like Nintendo is taking that path again if the latest rumor is true.

Forget the Box spoke to sources close to the manufacturing of Nintendo products and found that the Wii U’s components only cost about $180. It seems that the tablet controller makes up a decent portion of that cost with its components estimated at a price of $50.

With the components being priced at $180, you would think a launch price of $200 or $250 would be in order. Not so according to these sources who say Nintendo is currently finalizing costs, but won’t go below $300 when the console launches later this year.

Why the high price? It seems that Nintendo is “cutting production costs to maximize profits” and that it’s the company’s “main concern with the Wii U.” This is all to “build back confidence in investors.” The increased costs could also be associated with “including software with hardware, R&D, shipping costs, marketing/promotion, transportation, packaging costs, and carrying/holding costs.”

The rumored price of the components seem to confirm reports that the Wii U is not all that powerful. That claim has also been challenged though with Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford telling Joystiq that the console is “pretty powerful” and that it’s “a really nice bridge to the next generation.”

For those now worried that the Wii U is doomed to be eclipsed by current gen hardware at launch, don’t worry about it. While the sources say that Nintendo chose “an economical GPU and CPU,” they also said that these components could “keep up with the performance of today’s current consoles.”

Interestingly enough, the sources also say that performance wasn’t the main focus of the system. They say that Nintendo now has a bigger focus on “downloadable content, applications, video content, digital distribution and services to create a stream of revenue.” This makes sense as rumors were going around that Nintendo was looking for video content partners.

All of this is just rumor for now though. It’s not worth getting all worried over until E3 comes around and we get our first look at the system in action. It’s going to be nothing but conflicting reports until June, but at least it will provide us with some entertainment.

Do you think Nintendo is wise to price at Wii U at $300? What about the rumored cost of components? Let us know in the comments.

  • Samsung Galaxy S III May Be Coming In Late March

Rumors surrounding the release of Samsung’s new, highly anticipated addition to the Galaxy S lineup, the Galaxy S III, have been all over the map lately. There were rumors of an April release, however Samsung themselves sent out a tweet denying them. All they would say was that the phone would be coming out sometime in the first half of the year.

With an April release apparently out of the question, general opinion has settled on May 22nd as the probable release date. Speculation about the date was revived somewhat last week, though, when Samsung’s president of Greater China hinted that Samsung might be planning to release the phone earlier, perhaps in April.

Now, though, it looks like there’s a chance that the Galaxy S III may release even earlier. Reports out of London today suggest that the phone may actually hit stores as early as next week. It seems that a sign bearing the Samsung logo and the caption “Coming 30/3/2012” has appeared at a Phones 4U store on Oxford Street in London.

Signage like that is usually reserved for major product releases, and so far as anybody knows, the Galaxy S III is Samsung’s next major product. In that case, the Galaxy S III is the most likely subject of the sign. On the other hand, there’s that tweet from Samsung that suggests that the Galaxy S III won’t be out until closer to summer. There’s also the fact that Samsung hasn’t made any sort of announcement or sent out media invitations for the phone’s launch, which makes a Friday release look unlikely, as well.

All things considered, it’s probably best to keep looking for a May release of the Galaxy S III and assume that the sign in London is referring to something else.

What do you think? Would Samsung release a major new phone like this with almost no warning? Are you excited for the Galaxy S III? Let us know in the comments.

  • Tebow “Jets” To New York After Trade Announced

After much speculation and hype this week, the rumor mill can officially quit grinding grist; Tim Tebow has been traded to the New York Jets after they sent two picks, a fourth-rounder and sixth-rounder, to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a seventh-round selection.

The trade comes after Denver officially acquired hot commodity Peyton Manning yesterday in a 3-year, $96 million deal, a move that was met with shock and dismay to some–especially after Broncos bigwig John Elway said that Manning was their Plan A, and there was no Plan B…meaning that they aren’t banking on Manning being injured and needing a backup despite the fact that he was out for the entire 2011 season with neck injuries.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter predicted the three most likely teams to put in a bid for Tebow to be the Jaguars, the Packers, and the 49ers, so the move to New York is somewhat unexpected as they swooped in on silent cat’s feet to acquire one of the most talked about players in the NFL today.

Tebow will be backing up current Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, who just renewed his contract for three years in a $40 million deal. As always, the Twitterverse is abuzz with reaction to the news.

  • Samsung Galaxy S III May Launch In April

Samsung Galaxy S III May Launch In April

Just a little while ago we brought you news that a new image of Samsung’s Galaxy S III smartphone had been leaked. The newest addition to Samsung’s flagship smartphone lineup has been long been rumored to be launching on May 22, as the source for the earlier report suggests.

Now, however, it looks as though an April launch of the phone might be a possibility. Kim Young-Ha, Samsung’s president of Greater China, has hinted in a recent interview (Google Translation) that Samsung was considering rescheduling the release from May to April in hopes of increasing sales of both the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note.

Samsung’s Galaxy S II has been a major hit both in the US and elsewhere, and is seen as one of the chief rivals for Apple’s iPhone. With the launch of the next iPhone coming some time later this year, the pressure is on other handset manufacturers like Samsung to produce a phone that will compete with it. Rumored features of the Galaxy S III include a 4.7-inch or 4.8-inch 720×1280 HD display, a 12 megapixel rear camera, and quad-core 1.2 GHz processor. The phone will almost certainly run the most recent version of the Android operating system, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Are you excited about the Galaxy S III? Will you be buying one when it comes out? Let us know in the comments.

  • Tebow Being Traded Because Of His Fans?

Tebow Being Traded Because Of His Fans?

At yesterday’s press conference where it was officially announced that Peyton Manning will be starting the Denver Broncos this coming season, John Elway said that if he could hand-pick anyone to marry his daughter, it would be Tim Tebow. Manning showered the young quarterback with compliments, saying he was “a fan”. The two also raved that Tebow is a great player, but rumors have been churning lately that he will be traded now that Manning–a four-time MVP and the NFL’s most coveted free agent–has been signed to the team…and Elway did nothing to dispel those rumors, saying that Denver would “not be a super bowl team” with Tebow at the helm, despite the fact that Tebow helped lead Denver to the playoffs last season.

Although Manning displayed a great workout for Denver (and the other teams he was considering) and passed his physicals, he was out all of last season due to a string of neck injuries, which has some Denver fans concerned for the near future. But when asked what the Broncos’ plan B is should a trade commence and Manning gets hurt, Elway seemed incredulous. “We don’t have a plan B. We’re going with plan A,” he said.

Even though Manning is a pretty shiny prize for the Broncos and has been highly sought-after since his release from the Indianapolis Colts, some are wondering just why Denver would take such a risk with an up-and-coming player like Tebow. A recent article on Yahoo! Sports ponders whether or not the real reason there are talks of trading Tebow is that his fans have turned the game into a “circus”.

Tebow, well-known for his Christian values and considerable charity work, has attracted a following of loyal fans, and the phenomenon has been called “Tebowmania”. There’s been talk that all the attention he gets off the field interferes with the game, and speculation is that it could be the reason Denver is so quick to give up the young QB.

“At this point Tebow is a prisoner to his own off-the-field popularity, a rather tough reality considering he didn’t really try to create it in the first place,” writes Dan Wetzel. “No, Tebow hasn’t shied away from attention or outreach or providing a running testimony for his faith. However, he also has turned down a million chances to feed the fire.”

Whether this has anything to do with Denver’s decision–which hasn’t been announced yet–remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to watch how it plays out.

  • Tebow Trade Rumors Persist; Peyton Manning Officially A Bronco

With the recent imminent deal between Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, the sports world has been flooded with speculation and rumors as to what the team will do with their current quarterback, Tim Tebow. Now that the announcement has been officially made that Manning is a Bronco, that speculation has only increased, due mainly in part to comments reportedly made by John Elway at today’s press conference, including his opinion that the Broncos would not be a “super bowl team” with Tebow starting.

Several teams are said to be interested in acquiring Tebow should he be released from Denver despite his recent reputation for erratic performance, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, which would place him in familiar territory. While no decisions have been made yet as to his fate, the talk of trades has swept around the NFL and was addressed in the press conference today.

“I know what kind of player Tim Tebow is, what kind of person he is, what an awesome year it was,” Manning said. “If Tim Tebow is here, I’m going to be the best teammate. If other opportunities are presented to him, I’m going to wish him the best.”

The 5-year, $96 million deal came with other perks for Manning as well; famed Broncos quarterback Frank Tripucka reportedly asked Peyton to take his old football number–18–so the team has brought it out of retirement just for him.

With so much in the news about Manning and his move to Denver, hype has spread to Twitter, where an unverified personal account for the athlete has been set up.

  • Tim Tebow Trade Rumors Abound After Manning Signs With Denver

After landing the most sought-after free agent in the NFL–Peyton Manning–the Denver Broncos are now rumored to be considering trading quarterback Tim Tebow rather than having him back up Manning, even after he helped lead them to the playoffs in 2011. The trade rumors have Tebow fans in an uproar and have garnered claims that he is being treated unfairly, since he was only given the chance to prove himself for a year. But it isn’t as if he’ll be cut loose for long; according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there are already some teams interested in picking up the young player.

Three teams to monitor as trade talks for Tim Tebow pick up: Jacksonville, Green Bay, San Francisco.(image) 2 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The Jacksonville Jaguars may be the team to watch as this plays out, since their location alone may be reason enough for Tebow to choose them. Brad Culpepper, former NFL defensive tackle and ex-Florida Gator, is good friends with Tim, and he and his wife, Monica, say they wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where Tebow ended up.

“Brad and I just had dinner with Tim last week and I don’t think this comes as a shock or surprise to him that Manning was actually going to go there,” Monica said in an interview. “And in all honesty, Tim said, ‘I miss home. I miss the South. And hopefully I’ll land somewhere in Florida.’ I sure hope Jacksonville takes him because he’s such a great kid, such a good player and would be so thrilled to come back to the South.”

Tebow’s teammates seem to be in full support of the direction they are moving in, led by John Elway. Linebacker Von Miller said, “As far as what Mr. Elways is doing, that is what you have to be doing to be successful in this league,” he said. “You can’t just put all your eggs in one basket. It’s all up to Tim. In my opinion, I feel like he can get it done. But, looking at it from Mr. Elway’s point of view, you always got to be defining your options. What’s the next thing? And that’s just how the league is today.”

Twitter reaction was mixed at first, but Tebow has quite a loyal following of fans and they have supported him through his changes over the years. Some Denver fans are now questioning where their own loyalties lie and some say that if these rumors are true, they will have to re-evaluate their support for the Broncos.

The young athlete definitely has a lot of people in his corner, from fans to the companies he works as a spokesman for. They’re making it clear that no matter where his career takes him, they will be behind him; Jockey issued a statement to TMZ yesterday when the rumor mill first began to churn, saying, “Jockey brought Tim Tebow on as a spokesperson before he took his first professional snap and even before he finalized his contract with an NFL team. Jockey supports him 100% and we look forward to continuing our great relationship with Tim.”

  • CNN To Acquire Mashable? A Possibility, According to Reports From SXSW [Updated]

Update: TechCrunch is reporting that Mashable staffers are saying CEO Pete Cashmore is denying the rumors to them.

Reports are coming out of SXSW that CNN is in talks to acquire Mashable. This is being reported by the New York Times and multiple others, though there’s no word yet from either CNN or Mashable.

The NYT cites “three people with knowledge of the talks” as its sources. Reuters reports, citing an unnamed source that “It’s entirely possible” that CNN will buy Mashable for over $200 million, and that an announcement is expected on Tuesday.

Mashable’s sale to a bigger media entity has been rumored for years. In early 2010, rumors were going around that AOL was going to buy it. Obviously that didn’t happen, though AOL did buy TechCrunch and The Huffington Post.

As Felix Salmon mentions in the video the TechCrunch acquisition has hardly been smooth for AOL, as many of the site’s key writers have left. Mashable has already lost some if its key writers, so that will be an important element to consider going forward, acquisition or no.

Some have indicated that they think $200 million would make the acquisition overvalued, but Mashable’s more consumer-oriented focus (as compared to a site like TechCrunch), along with its pageviews, have enabled the site to attract big advertiser money.

Mashable has also been able to expand its own brand at a high level through various partnerships, including with CNN itself.

  • Proof That Google Maps Plans To Add Rotating Views?

Proof That Google Maps Plans To Add Rotating Views?

Google has gifted more cities with the 45° imagery in Google Maps, this time updating the imagery for 56 locations: 23 cities in the United States and 33 throughout the rest of the world. Notable in this release, Google says, is that this is the first time they’ve published 45° for the Czech Republic (in which many cities are included) and Slovakia.

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to visit the Colosseum in Rome, Italy, you’ve likely noticed that the ruins have begun to resemble more of a droopy wasp nest than an arena that welcomes blood-drenched gladiator battles. Using the standard 90° imagery, you wouldn’t get either impression were you to have a peek at the Colosseum.

Okay, it does retain some of that wasp-nest texture, but it also resembles one of those trilobite fossils. However, now with the 45° imagery, we can efface that impression and get back to imagining that, yes, this is the Colosseum of legend.

Milwaukee was another city added in Google Maps’ update, but not without some peculiarities. I noticed that, at first glance, if we’re to assume that the image of the Milwaukee Art Museum is congruent with the rest of Google Maps, it appears to be perched on the western coast of Lake Michigan.

But… Milwaukee doesn’t have a western shore with Lake Michigan; the city is on the eastern shore of the state, which touches Lake Michigan, and where the art museum sits.

The only other explanation is that the view Google provided in their blog update actually faces south. Up to now, though, I’ve only ever seen Google Maps imagery face north in the 45° angle imagery.

What’s more is that the southern view of the Milwaukee Art Museum is only available if you follow Google’s link from the blog post. If you simply go to the museum through the usual Google Maps portal, you are met with an image that is congruent with the rest of the 45° imagery.

Even disabling the 45° view from Google’s original link and reverting back to the 90°, the coast flips and now everything is in its right place.

Try as I might, I couldn’t duplicate the point-of-view that was originally provided in Google’s link. Even by switching to the map view to satellite view and back to map, I couldn’t return to the south-facing view. Have a play at the map with the embedded portion below and see for yourself. As long as you stay in the map in the link Google provided, you can navigate all of Milwaukee from the south-facing view.

Google Map’s imagery has always favored the north-facing point-of-view, and as far as I’ve experienced, this is the first one that actually faces south. That the Google-provided image is from the opposite point-of-view, it makes me wonder if this was an accidental reveal on their part of what could potentially be a multi-view function for maps in the future.

Anybody else notice this variant in the maps anywhere else? Feel free to add your observations in the comments below.

Oh, and for those in want of knowing, below is the full list of cities to get the newest 45° update.

  • iPad HD: What This Year’s Model WON’T Have

A retina display. Some kind of Apple TV integration. 4G LTE. A beefy processor. More megapixels for the camera. A price hike?

With all of the speculation about Apple’s expected iPad 3/iPad HD announcement swirling at nigh-breakneck speeds this morning, it’s hard to keep up on what information is reliable and what expectations might fall a little bit short. There’s a lot to get excited about and, while a lot of the rumors probably have some substantial support from reality, anytime fanboy fevers run high it welcomes the opportunity for disappointment. What if that retina display doesn’t actually happen? What if the camera is just the pits? What if all of this leaked iPad 3 info has just been a decoy to lead us away from something completely different, like the iCot?

Instead of focusing on what could come up short and leave ourselves vulnerable to disappointment, it’s worth reconsidering the list of features that the new Apple device will confidently not have. Recounting the things that the iPad 3 definitely won’t have will lessen the bruise of the new iPad’s shortcomings, right?

Given we are still in the arena of rumors, I can’t substantively say that the iPad 3-thing definitely won’t have any of the following functions, either, but it’s more likely than not that whatever Apple releases, it won’t include any of these features.

    Web-shooters.
    Fur.
A spare set of your car keys.
    A spare tire.
    Enriched uranium.
    A fleshlight attachment.
    The world-record for pole-vaulting.
    Snooki.
    Cleats.
    A pizza cutter.
    A one-way ticket to midnight.
    The Higgs boson.
    Zune support.
    Stardust.
    Downward-facing dog pose.
Rick Santorum’s Super Tuesday victory in Ohio.
A #1 seed for the NCAA tournament.
    The Triforce.
    Human bean juice.
    Fangs.
    An inner tube.
    The singularity.
    Birth control.
    Over mitts.
    Scratch-off lottery tickets.
    An espresso stamper.
    Egg Beaters.
    Red mercury.
    Happiness.
    Android.
    Steve Jobs.

This list isn’t meant to be comprehensive, and there’s certainly room for additions here. What else do you think we can expect not to see included in the new iPad’s suite of features? Feel free to contribute your speculations below in the comments.

  • iPad 3 Launching With 4G LTE After All [Rumor]

We’re only a day away from the big iPad 3 (or is it iPad HD) event that Apple’s holding in San Francisco. Invites were sent out last week, saying that the Cupertino company has “something you really have to see…and touch.”

One of the biggest speculation points on the new tablet has been whether or not it’s going to launch with 4G LTE capabilities. Early reports said yes, but later reports have thrown that into question. On Monday, we told you about sources that said the iPad 3 will not tote a higher price tag than the iPad 2 (something that contradicts common wisdom on the matter). The possible lack of a price hike led MIC Gadget to speculate that it was due to the iPad 3 not coming 4G LTE ready.

Now, on the eve of the suspected launch, iMore is reporting that the new iPad will come ready for 4G LTE. They quote sources that were correct on the date of the launch event who say that Apple is not planning on saving the big 4G announcement for the iPhone 5.

They also added the little tidbit that despite recent uncertainty on the availability, the new iPad will in fact launch with the A6 quad-core processor.

With many carriers expanding their 4G networks, it would make sense for Apple to launch their latest and greatest with the capability. Luckily, we only have to wait another day to find out.

  • Galaxy S III Release Date NOT In April, Says Samsung

Last week, we told you about the most recent rumor regarding Samsung’s new addition to the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S III. A tip reportedly coming from Samsung’s marketing agency said that the much-anticipated new smartphone was set for an April release. Prior rumors set the release date somewhere in May.

In what might be seen as an unusual move, Samsung has officially commented on a specific rumor. They say that the latest rumors are untrue and the Galaxy S III will not be arriving in April.

Furthermore, Samsung said that they would announce the release date via Twitter – when they were ready to announce a specific date:

[알려드립니다] 일부 보도를 통해 알려진 갤럭시S3 4월 출시설은 사실이 아닙니다. 구체적인 출시 시기가 정해지면 트위터를 통해 가장 먼저 알려드리도록 하겠습니다. 3 days ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The somewhat broken English translation attached to that tweet states:

Known by some reports [brings] the Galaxy S3 April release stand is not true. Specific release period, I’ll let you know via Twitter first.

Samsung has clarified that statement to The Verge, saying:

The successor to the GALAXY S II smartphone will be unveiled in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product. We cannot confirm the detailed information at the moment.

So, if Samsung is the be taken at their word, we can expect the Galaxy S III sometime after April, and sometime before the end of June. And they seem to have taken the “chill out, guys, we’ll call you” approach. When it finally does arrive, it’s rumored to be 7 millimeters thin – so it could really turn heads.

  • iPad 3 Gets Its First Close Up

iPad 3 Gets Its First Close Up

The iPad 3 may be the most talked about and leaked product in Apple’s history. With the device launching on March 7, the amount of leaks are only going to increase. The latest leak gives us a look at its external components to get an idea of its dimensions.

M.I.C. Gadget secured through its various sources some of the external components that will be making up the iPad 3, or iPad HD. The biggest surprise is that the case of the iPad 3 is about the same size of the iPad 2, with the iPad 3 being a bit thicker.

The components that M.I.C. Gadget were able to obtain confirm some more of the device’s capabilities and features. The first is that the iPad 3 will retain the home button that all mobile Apple products are known for. You didn’t think Apple would make a buttonless iPad, did you?

The second is that they have confirmed the memory configurations the iPad 3 will come in. There will be 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models available just like the iPad 2.

Sources say that there have been thousands of iPad 3 cases shipped to the US over the last few weeks. Fret not though, iPad 2 cases barely fit the iPad 3’s increased thickness, but still fit nonetheless. For those who use the smart cover accessory, you’ll find that it still fits just fine over the iPad 3’s display.

Check out the video below that looks at the external components of the iPad 3. It should hold you off until the official unveil on March 7.

  • Galaxy S III Release Date In April [RUMOR]

Galaxy S III Release Date In April [RUMOR]

Could you be getting your hands on the new Samsung Galaxy S III as soon as next month?

According to sources quoted by ZDNet Korea, Samsung plans to launch the new Galaxy S smartphone in April. Although the phone was nowhere to be seen at Mobile World Congress, which has been taking place this week, the rumor apparently comes from some pretty authoritative sources. The tip apparently came from Cheil Worldwide, South Korea’s largest ad agency, who has been running campaigns for Samsung for some time.

The last Galaxy S III launch rumor we heard had the phone releasing in May.

As far as the phone itself, it’s rumored to be one of the thinnest smartphones ever – definitely the thinnest in the Galaxy line at 7 millimeters thick.

Other spec rumors put the device as having a Super AMOLED Plus display, 2GB RAM and a quad-core processor. As far as the camera goes, we might be looking at an 8 MP front-facing camera and a 2 MP back-facing one. These spec rumors come courtesy of another Korean site.

As far as another high-profile 2012 release goes, we’ve heard conflicting reports on the possible iPhone 5 release date. Earlier reports said that it could be launching at Apple’s annual WWDC in June, while the most recent rumor pushes the date back to the September-October timeframe. Either way, an April release for the Samsung Galaxy S III would beat the iPhone 5.

  • iPad 3 Release Date: CNBC Says Next Week, With A Quad-Core, In NYC

UPDATE 2: Invites for the official event have gone out, and it will be held on March 7th. More on that here.

As it stands, the general thinking around Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 is that it will be announced on March 7th. This date has been slung around by multiple sources, and of course the logical place to expect that announcement is either San Francisco or Cupertino.

Within the last hour, CNBC has tweeted that Apple will be unveiling a quad-core 4G LTE enabled iPad 3 next week. And they say that it’s taking place in New York.

ALERT: Quad-Core iPad 3 with 4G LTE to be unveiled in New York next week. -Sources 52 minutes ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Here’s some elaboration on CNBC’s site:

    From CNBC’s John Ford:

What i’m hearing is that there will be an announcement next week and that actually the main location might be new york. which would be unusual, because a lot of product announcement, apple tends to do out of san francisco. but, i’m hearing new york could be a location next week. new york is a place, of course, that has plenty of media and publishing happening there. so if that is a main feature of the announcement, new york would make sense.

In response to this, The Loop‘s reliable Apple expert Jim Dalrymple tweeted his rebuttals:

@pdparticle Well @CNBC is wrong. It won’t be in NY 🙂 39 minutes ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

It’s not just the location that’s being questioned, but earlier today we heard rumors that Apple’s Quad-core A6 might not be ready for the big release.

We will update this article as necessary.

UPDATE: CNBC has released some clarifying tweets:

  • iPad Mini Being Tested, Christmas Release Wouldn’t Affect iPad 3

Although most iPad/iPhone rumors are met with a great deal of skepticism, rumors concerning a possible iPad Mini are met with even more skepticism. Between Steve Job’s famous proclamation about smaller tablets feeling like giant smartphones and the fact that iPad Mini rumors have been around for years, it’s understandable why many think that Apple will never actually produce a smaller iPad.

But the rumors persist, and today market researchers TrendForce say that smaller iPads (the currently labeled iPad Minis) are in the testing phase. If they were to actually enter production, they say, we’d be looking at a Q4 2012 release date sometime around Christmas.

Here’s what TrendForce had to say about the iPad Mini, as quoted by CNET:

If production ensues, the release time will possibly be in 4Q12, right before Christmas. With a smaller size and a resolution of 1024×768, as opposed to iPad 3’s 2048×1536, the small iPad will not hurt iPad 3’s sales in 2012 and will have a bigger impact in 2013.

With the iPad 3 widely expected to surface at a March 7th launch event, a Christmastime iPad Mini would only be able to steal the iPad 3’s thunder from the holidays and beyond – into 2013. And even if an iPad Mini were to actually be produced, how much would it cut into the iPad 3’s margin?

The persistence of this rumor and people’s interest in it proves that the concept of a 7-inch iPad is not superfluous to most. For those who find the 10-inch model cumbersome but want something more than a 3.5-inch iPhone, something in between would be ideal. The most recent example of a successful 7-inch tablet is Amazon’s Kindle Fire – a device that would surely be threatened by a smaller iPad (although Amazon is rumored to be working on a 10-inch Kindle Fire).

This is not the only time in recent memory that we’ve heard talk of a possible late 2012 iPad Mini. Another research analyst said with certainty that we would see a 7-inch iPad by Christmas:

“I believe that’s always been in the plan,” Technology Business research’s Ezra Gottheil said. “Actually, that’s a good form factor for some users, and although they will also charge a premium above other similar-sized tablets, they want to protect that price flank.”

Do you think a smaller iPad is necessary? Let us know in the comments.

  • 10-Inch Kindle Fire Set For Q2 2012?

According to reports, Amazon has tapped Foxconn to manufacture a 10-inch version of their popular Kindle Fire tablet, and you could have your hands on one pretty soon.

The reports comes from DigiTimes, who quote sources that say “Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) has obtained ODM orders for 10-inch Kindle Fire from Amazon and will begin shipments in the second quarter of 2012.”

The Kindle Fire sold well during the holiday season, as Amazon reported that it was their best-selling device. As the imminent launch of the iPad 3 looms, however, it’s expected that Amazon will cut their order for the 7-inch Kindle Fire in half. The biggest draw for many buyers of the 7-inch Kindle Fire was the $199 price point, and one wonders how they would be able to compete with the iPad in the realm of 10-inch tablet prices. A 10-inch Kindle Fire would surely have a lower price than the iPad 3, so it would directly challenge Apple’s dominance.

A recent study found that Kindle Fire owners were in no way as satisfied with their device as iPad owners (74% to 54%). The price was said to be the part users liked the most, followed by the screen and then the “ease of use.” Users’ disappointments with the Kindle Fire were lack of physical volume buttons, followed by poor battery life and lack of 3G. The smaller 7-inch screen size wasn’t mentioned, so it’s unclear as to whether or not it played a role in their dissatisfaction.

Every time Amazon sells a Kindle Fire, they lose a couple of bucks, as the manufacturing costs were revealed to exceed $199 by a few dollars. However, analysts have predicted that Amazon’s strategy of recouping those losses with app and media purchases will work – they say each Kindle could make Amazon over $100 in its lifetime.

Oddly enough, as rumors of a larger Kindle Fire appear, rumors of a smaller iPad continue to float around. Latest rumors say that Apple could be launching a 7-inch iPad Mini later this year on the heels of the iPad 3, which is expected in March.

  • iPhone 5 Release Date Rumor: September to October?

Japanese Apple blog Macotakara is reporting that we might have to wait a little longer for the next-gen iPhone than previous rumors have led us to believe.

According to “reliable sources,” Apple will stay on the schedule set in 2011 and release the iPhone 5 sometime in the Fall, between September and October. The iPhone 4S was launched in October 2011 at a special media, so if this new rumor proves accurate, Apple will have put about a year between releases. Macotakara says that this is the preferred cycle that Apple plans to keep for some time.

This directly contradicts the last major iPhone 5 rumor, courtesy of DigiTimes. Their sources said that Apple would not wait a year before launching their new device, announcing it to the world at their annual Worldwide Developers Conference in mind-June. 2011’s WWDC focused primarily on software – iOS 5, Mac OS X Lion, and the iCloud. The report said that Apple would switch it up and make a big hardware announcement in 2012.

MacRumors cites additional sources to back up a fall release, saying they “similarly heard from a representative of a supplier known to provide parts for the iPhone that Apple’s ordering plans are pointing toward a launch of new hardware in the September.”

Even earlier rumors from the end of January had sources from the inside of Apple manufacturing arm Foxconn saying that they were about to begin production on the new phone.

Rumors contradicting rumors. Can’t say I’m surprised. If the iPhone rumor mill is anywhere near as topsy turvy as the months leading up to the iPhone 4S release, we’re in for a wild ride.

  • RIP Madonna Twitter Trend Appears, Lady Gaga Fans, Will Smith Get Blamed

    Oh, Twitterverse. Sigh.

This morning, RIPMadonna was trending on Twitter. Because Madonna is dead? Of course not. She’s totally alive. But that doesn’t stop the Twitterverse from spreading rumors. Fake death rumors on Twitter are becoming about as common as men on Google+.

Anyone looking at the RIPMadonna tweets can easily tell that Madonna isn’t actually dead. However, there appears to be some debate over where the rumors came from. Some are blaming Lady Gaga fans. Some are blaming Will Smith.

Are we sure Twitter isn’t the social network for kids now?

Don’t worry adults, I know there are some of you on there too. That includes myself.

So, Will Smith being blamed (even by blogs) appears to come from this tweet:

Hopefully enough people out there realize that this is not actually Will Smith, but a parody account, which is actually made clear in the bio section.

The reason “RIP Madonna” is trending, is because Will Smith apparently said “RIP Madonna’s career.” Now we’re getting the blame… 31 minutes ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto
