  • Angry Birds Maker Announces Next Game

Angry Birds Maker Announces Next Game

Today on Finnish morning talk show “Yle’s breakfast television,” Rovio’s CEO Mikael Hed dropped the news that they will be releasing a new game that has neither the word “Angry” or the word “Birds” in the main title. The new game will be called “Amazing Alex” and is based on an IP that Rovio purchased from the Casey’s Contraptions game.

When asked about the new game, Hed told the host that the game will have an “educational element and centres on main character Alex, a curious young boy who loves to build things.”

It is going to be very tough for this developer to shed one of the most successful IP’s of all time. The Angry Birds franchise, in all it’s sequels, has been downloaded 1 billion times! So as you can imagine, Rovio is really pressured to deliver a winner. “The quality pressure is high. We want to maintain the high standard Angry Birds fans have come to enjoy,” said Hed.

Rovio has been making moves to better prepare themselves for a more diversified media world. They opened a theme park, bought propery, and have a cartoon coming out!

  • 1 Billion Angry Birds Games Downloaded

Rovio, the developers of the wildly popular Angry Birds series of games, announced today that over one billion Angry Birds games have been downloaded. The software developer announced the impressive milestone with a tweet:

http://t.co/MHpui47z – 1 BILLION DOWNLOADS!! Thanks to *everyone* who has ever played an #AngryBirds game! #billionbirds 27 minutes ago via SocialEngage ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The link in the tweet leads to a thank-you video for fans, which you can view below. In the description for the video, Rovio promises even more to come:

Angry Birds games have now been downloaded more than a billion times — THANK YOU to all of our incredible fans! This is only the beginning of our story, keep your eyes peeled for what’s coming up next from Rovio!

The one billion number counts downloads from all of the Angry Birds games, including the original Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, and the new Angry Birds Space. Pointing out this fact doesn’t take anything away from Rovio’s accomplishment, though. The developer has proven that video games do not have to cater to a hardcore crowd to be successful, that selling games for low prices can still be profitable, and that solid gameplay and level design can easily compete with high-end graphics and game engines.

According to comScore numbers released this month, Rovio ranks 12th in the list of top smartphone properties. Over 25 million players, around one-quarter of all smartphone users, pulled back on their slingshots and let Angry Birds fly this past March. Though Rovio falls just under app gaming’s number one property, Zynga, Rovio has shown that it can create games with staying power. Launched over two years ago, the Angry Birds games are still going strong, while Zynga has seen some of its games’ popularity rise and fall very quickly.

Take a look at the video below and leave a comment to let us know if you still love Angry Birds.

  • Angry Birds Now Embedable Through Facebook

Angry Birds aficionados can now challenge their friends anywhere on the web by embedding a level from the Angry Birds Facebook app. Pocket-lint writer Stuart Miles spotted this feature today, which allows a player to embed a single level on any webpage after they have finished it. The embed contains the user’s high score for the level, allowing players to challenge each other for Angry Birds score supremacy.

In addition, players can simply share a level straight to their Facebook wall, where their friends can immediately play it. After challengers complete the level, win or lose, a button appears inviting the player to play the full version of Angry Birds on Facebook. Unfortunately for some, you must be logged into Facebook to play the full game, even when clicking through an embedded Angry Birds level. Also, there is not yet a Facebook version of Angry Birds Space available. Still, this is a fun way to spread a bit of Angry Birds challenge around the web.

What do you think? Should more games make individual levels embeddable? Go ahead and try to beat my high score on the level below, and then leave a comment for me about it.

  • Angry Birds Theme Park Opens In Finland

    (image)

A couple months ago we reported that Rovio was teaming up with Finnish theme park Särkänniemi Adventure Park to create an Angry Birds Land inside of its current theme park. Well the time has come and the theme park is completed!

    (image)

“The opening of Angry Birds Land in Särkänniemi is a really big deal for us”, said park boss Miikka Seppälä. “The theme and design of Angry Birds is internationally renowned, so we are delighted to welcome visitors from around the globe to experience the product for themselves. The area is definitely a must see destination for millions of Angry Birds players, but also a great experience for those who are not yet familiar with the game.”

    (image)

Apparently there is also an area that is not yet done called the “Magic Place,” where guests can somehow upgrade their mobile Angry Birds games.

    (image)

To see how this park is laid out and what the feel would be cool. It could be very Finlad-Centric and weird to Americans, but I don’t want to necessarily comment on a place i’ve neve been.

It only costs 35 Euros for adults and 29 Euros for children over 4 years old, with discounts available for pre-ordered tickets.

  • Angry Birds Space Is Now Fastest Growing Mobile Game

Whether you love it or hate it, Angry Birds is here to stay. I think it’s going to stay that way for a while too after Rovio announced today that the latest game in the franchise, Angry Birds Space, has become the fastest growing mobile game ever.

Angry Birds Space has been downloaded 50 million times over the course of 35 days according to Rovio. It breaks all of their personal records which already set the bar pretty high. It also broke the previous record holder’s, Draw Something, grasp on the title.

Rovio isn’t letting the success go to their heads though. The developer is still focused on “creating fun new experiences that everybody can enjoy.” It seems that Rovio plans to keep this up by releasing new updates to Angry Birds Space over the course of the next few months or even years. It’s the kind of title that can be milked for a long time before players become bored with it.

Of course, what would an announcement like this be without a tease? Rovio says that “something even bigger is on its way!” Do they mean even more Angry Birds Space levels? Maybe an expansion? Perhaps Angry Birds Space Seasons Rio Redux? Whatever it is, Rovio is sure to have more hits coming their way.

Rovio could also be hinting at an entirely new IP. A developer, unless you’re Infinity Ward, can only survive so long on a single IP. People want variety and while Angry Birds Space was a much better game than its predecessor, it still reeks of franchise milking. That can only be bad for players and the developer.

If you’re still new to this Angry Birds thing, you can download the newest game for iOS, Android, PC and Mac. There’s an ad supported version of the game on Android as well if you want to just play it without having to pay $0.99 for the pleasure of flinging space birds at space pigs. Just be sure to download the game from official channels or you might run into some malware.

  • Angry Birds Creators Start New Game Studio: Boomlagoon

Two key Angry Birds creators, Antti Sten, lead server architect and Thuosas Erikoinen, lead artist, have left Rovio to create a new studio called Boomlagoon, VentureBeat is reporting.

Boomlagoon will also utilize the mobile platform for game development. From their Facebook page: “Our primary area of services are web and mobile games. We concentrate on providing convivial and intriguing games to our fans.” Triple word score for convivial. They will begin by programming in HTML5, for both web and mobile platforms.

For Boomlagoon, Sten will act as chief executive, with Erikonnen acting as cheif creative officer. Both played integral roles in the creation of Angry Birds. Sten was responsible for building the server infrastructure. Erikoinen was the lead artist for the first three installments of Angry Birds, and supervised Angry Birds Space.

“I focus on the essential while maintaining the balance between efficiency and reason. I prefer an analytical approach on any given challenge,” says Antti Sten, on Boomlagoon’s welcome page.

“I keep my mind open with a humble ‘nothing-is-impossible’ attitude. I’m positive on every aspect of my life and I intend to apply the same mental method on every decision I make,” says Tuomas Erikoinen.

Right now the company only consists of the two founders, but they plan to hire more people. Rovio grew from 12 people to 300 during their involvement with the company so they do have experience in growing a business. Sten says their experience with startups will prove useful in founding and running this new venture.

According to VentureBeat, the idea for Boomlagoon began over a poker game, with the discussion continuing over a drink. They have not raised any money for the project yet, but they are in the process of finding investors.

According to a tweet from the company account this morning, they are official underway…

  • Shigeru Miyamoto Loves Rovio’s Angry Birds

Shigeru Miyamoto is a household name to many gamers for his contributions to the industry over the years. He is widely considered to be the father of the “modern” video game with the creation of Super Mario Bros. In short, he is a legend and when he talks, people listen. His latest comments, however, might disappoint some of his most ardent fans.

Speaking to Edge Magazine, the legendary game designer revealed that his favorite game from last year was Angry Birds. His love for the bird vs. pig combat simulator seems to stem from it having a “traditional videogame feel to it.” He then goes on to say the team at Rovio put a “very creative side” into the game while “having fun developing the game.”

It’s hard to argue with the man when Angry Birds has become such a hit. The latest game in the franchise, Angry Birds Space, has already been downloaded over 20 million times. There’s a reason these kind of games are popular and Miyamoto can see that.

As for smart phone games in general, Miyamoto admits that he doesn’t have much time for them. He does, however, say that smart phones have opened up game creation to more people. This brings in more competition which “inspires us to try even harder, and create even more unexpected new things.”

This kind of attitude in regards to smart phone gaming and casual gaming in general is why Miyamoto is so respected in the industry. While a lot of gamers, and people within the industry, are blasting smart phone games; we should be welcoming them as a new form of interaction. There is a lot of shovelware on the app store, but we shouldn’t judge a platform by its amount of bad games. If we were to judge a platform based on that criteria, everything from the Atari 2600 to the PlayStation 3 would be considered wastelands of mediocrity.

Do you agree with Miyamoto on Angry Birds being a great game? Or do you think he’s off the mark? Let us us know in the comments.

  • Angry Birds Cartoon Set For Fall 2012

Rovio Mobile have been really busy lately! A wildly successful sequel to their awesome “Angry Birds” game, a theme park, an acquisition and expansion, and now a cartoon that will lead up to the movie. The company will be making 52 episodes but the movie has been ruled out until at least 2014.

“We’re going to roll out a weekly animation series later this year of shortform content,” said Rovio’s head of animation Nick Dorra. The series will consist of 52 episodes lasting between two-and-a-half and three minutes each. “We’re going to roll it out on all possible devices. We’re looking at building a video app for that, and we’re also looking at partnerships and so on… We want to be on all screens.”

When asked about the Angry Birds movie, Dorra had this to say. “It’s in development, but it won’t be out in 2013 or 2014, you’ll have to bide your time and first watch all of our shorts!” He went on to talk about why Rovio Mobile are making the animated shorts. “It’s about telling more engaging stories… and deeper thoughts, deeper feelings of the characters, such as why are they always angry? Angry Birds is not just about the gameplay, and will be in the future less and less about the slingshot, actually, and more and more about the characters.”

He also talked about the new game that Rovio Mobile is making. “We are going to release completely new IP this year. Nothing to do with Angry Birds. But we are also working on bringing new projects in the Angry Birds universe that have nothing to do with the gameplay we have seen before,” he said.

  • Rovio Expanding Into Sweden After New Acquisition

Rovio has been busy as of late with their continuation towards world domination. Last week they released the first true sequel with “Angry Birds Space” wich sold a whopping 10 million copies in it’s first weekend. Then a few days ago, they announced that they had acquired gaming arm of benchmarking software developer Futuremark.

Now we get word that they will be opening a new studio in Stockholm, Sweden. Word has it that the company is currently seeking a general manager for the new office and plans to hire 20-30 staff within a year.

“2012 is going to be a big year in gaming for us, and we’re constantly on the lookout for great new talent,” said Petri Järvilehto, Rovio’s executive vice president of games. “We’re excited to expand to Stockholm and work in one of Europe’s gaming and innovation hotspots.”

It will be very interesting to see what kind of projects this new studio will be working on and if they are going to expand to something outside of “Angry Birds.”

  • Angry Birds Creator Acquires Futuremark Games

Rovio is a busy little bird these days. First it’s wildly successful “Angry Birds” franchise gets its first real sequel in “Angry Birds Space.” Now we get news that they have aquired their second company. This time it is the gaming arm of benchmarking software developer Futuremark. “They are an incredibly talented and experienced team, and we are thrilled to have them on board,” said Mikael Hed, Rovio Entertainment’s CEO. “Rovio’s success is founded on the excellence of our team, and Futuremark Games Studio is going to be a superb addition.”

“I am proud to see the potential of our talented games team recognized by Rovio,” said Jukka Mäkinen, Futuremark CEO. “Futuremark will now focus on supporting gamers and industry with 3DMark, our professional grade benchmark which, in a new version to be released later this year, will allow unified gaming performance comparison across operating systems and form factors for the first time.”

Rovio is expanding it’s empire a little at a time, with gaming, TV, movies, merchandising, and theme parks. Are they becoming the Google of the gaming world?

  • Angry Birds Space Tops 10 Million Downloads

Angry Birds Space has achieved 10 million downloads over the weekend. The company Tweeted the news this morning.

They have not said how many of those downloads reflect the free version, which is available for Android devices.

The game has been given good reviews so far, earning a Metacritic score of 84. People are touting the realistic physics, making it one of the more enjoyable aspects of the game.

“Space” was developed in collaboration with NASA through a Space Act Agreement. The agreement is a win-win for both companies. NASA gets the opportunity to educate more people in a fun way about some of the properties of gravity, zero-gravity and microgravity. Rovio gets to cite collaboration with NASA when advertising the realism their gameplay.

  • Angry Birds Space Now Available

As promised, the first true sequel to Angry Birds is finally available. Angry Birds Space builds upon the first game while offering new gameplay that makes it worthy of being called a true sequel.

The sequel has the familiar birds fighting against the evil pigs that they have been at odds with since the first game. As the name implies though, this time they’re in space. The space motif would probably be enough to satisfy most players, but Rovio decided to shake up the formula a bit.

I’ve had the opportunity to play around with the game since this morning when it launched across all mobile platforms. The first thing I can confirm is that the game is fun. It’s more fun than its predecessor due to a fun gimmick that the first game sorely lacked.

As you might have seen in previews, the game has players launching birds from the same slingshot as before. This time, however, players will have to aim into gravitational fields surrounding the planets that the pigs are on. This allows the birds to circle the planet and perform trick shots if you will. Gravity manipulation is nothing new, but it’s the gimmick Angry Birds needed to stay fresh.

The space setting also allows the game’s visuals to really shine. I was never a fan of the first game’s admittedly boring green grass and blue sky visuals. The moons, planets and stars in the background really make the game stand out.

Angry Birds Space has already received plenty of attention pre-launch with partnerships between the brand and agencies like NASA. Wal-Mart has also jumped on board the Angry Birds craze by offering exclusive levels to those who find clues on the company’s Facebook page and in-store merchandise.

You can grab Angry Birds Space now for iPhone ($0.99), iPad ($2.99), Android (Free) and Kindle Fire ($2.99).

  • Angry Birds Space to Launch: NASA, Rovio Partner Up

The three-year enmity between birds and pigs will soon be played out on a cosmic battleground. In cooperation with NASA, Finland-based Rovio Entertainment, creator of the Angry Birds franchise, formally announced its newest game, “Angry Birds Space,” on Thursday. NASA and Rovio are working together to teach people about physics and space exploration through the internationally successful puzzle game.

Available for iOS, Android, PC, and Mac starting March 22, the new game will take engage players with concepts of human space exploration, including weightlessness and the gravity wells of nearby planets, as the new avian-porcine battleground lends a cosmic twist to the physics of the game’s slingshot-based bombardment. Levels in the new game will be set both on planets and in microgravity.

“This collaboration began with a simple Twitter exchange about birds and pigs in space, and it has grown into a tremendous outreach and education opportunity,” said David Weaver, associate administrator for communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “This ongoing collaboration with Rovio and Angry Birds is an exciting way to get people engaged with NASA’s missions of exploration and discovery, and get students energized about future careers in science and technology.”

A video exploring the concept of microgravity with the help of Angry Birds characters was shown to a South By Southwest audience this week. In it NASA Flight Engineer Don Pettit, currently aboard the International Space Station, uses Angry Birds Space to explain how physics works in space, including demonstrating trajectories in microgravity by catapulting an Angry Bird through the space station. Here it is, in full:

Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer and mighty eagle of Rovio Entertainment, spoke to the games development and the unique experience it offers. “We focused on every detail in development of Angry Birds Space to build a special experience for our fans,” said Vesterbacka, “I believe we have succeeded well with the game, and we wanted to create something as unique around our launch events. NASA has been the perfect partner for our Angry Birds Space program, and we can’t wait to work with them on creating more compelling educational experiences.”

The formal announcement of the Angry Birds Space launch follows just a day after NASA announced the evolution of its successful Tweetup program into the more inclusive NASA Social.

  • Angry Birds Theme Park Takes Flight In Finland

Rovio has a gem on their hands. What originally started as a $0.99 app in the Apple App Store is spawning sequels, a movie, and now a theme park. Rovio and Finland’s Särkänniemi Adventure Park is designing an “Angry Birds Land” theme park based on the popular downloadable game.

We wanted to create a unique themed area and associate it with a strong and well-known brand,” says Miikka Seppälä, CEO of the park. “The Angry Birds characters were born in Finland but known worldwide by people of all ages. This is a perfect fit for our Adventure Park. Our goal is to motivate the fans, both adults and children, to exercise and enjoy the outdoors.”

As of this time, not much more is known about this impending deal but it is believed that more information will be released in April.

Angry Birds was released in 2009 by Finnish developer Rovio. The games have been released on the Iphone, Android, PS3, xbox 360, PC, Mac, and Facebook. As of this date the games and their subsequent sequels have been downloaded over 500 million times.

  • Angry Birds Space Announced For March 22

One of the world’s most popular games is getting its first proper sequel.

Rovio announced via its Web site, Angry Birds Space. Not much is known about the game yet besides that it takes place in outer space and it’s launching on March 22.

It does give us the tagline, “One small fling for a bird, one quantum leap for birdkind.”

I was never the biggest fan of Angry Birds, but I like the new design. If they can provide more gameplay to augment the flinging birds out of a slingshot, I’ll be on board with the rest of the populace.

Check out the logo below. I think it’s pretty awesome:

  • Neil Young Equates Piracy To Radio

Neil Young Equates Piracy To Radio

Rovio boss Mikael Hed said that piracy equals exposure. Music legend Neil Young couldn’t agree more.

At the Dive Into Media conference today, Neil Young spoke on music piracy and music quality. He detailed his solution to audio quality and his relationship with Steve Jobs.

Speaking first on the MP3 format, Young said that digital formats are convenient, but they sound lousy. He said that his goal is to “rescue the art form that I’ve been practicing for the past 50 years.” He blames the digital age for the degradation of music quality.

Modern digital formats sound great on my phone and I have no problem with it. Young, however, rightly points out that the digital encoding only captures a small percent of the musical data in a master recording.

Young doesn’t hate digital formats, far from it. He just feels that the “digital age” has caused people to choose between quality and convenience. “They shouldn’t have to make that choice,” Young said.

The solution is hardware that can play audio files that preserve more of the data present in the original recordings according to Young. He isn’t making that solution though. He’s leaving the heavy lifting to “some rich guy” like Steve Jobs.

Speaking of Jobs, Young says that he was a “pioneer of digital music, and his legacy is tremendous.” He says that Jobs listened to vinyl at home after a day’s work. If Jobs were to live long enough as Young has, he’s sure that Jobs would have found a solution.

He then moved onto record companies and whether or not they’re obsolete:

“What I like about record companies is that they present and nurture artists. That doesn’t exist on iTunes, it doesn’t exist on Amazon. That’s what a record company does, and that’s why I like my record company. People look at record companies like they’re obsolete, but there’s a lot of soul in there — a lot of people who care about music, and that’s very important.”

He then said that artists that complain about record companies should go it alone and become indie artists.

At the end of the talk, he tackled the sensitive issue of piracy:

“Piracy is new radio. That’s how music gets around.”

  • Angry Birds On Facebook Launching Valentines Day

Angry Birds On Facebook Launching Valentines Day

Angry Birds is huge so it comes as a surprise that it isn’t on Facebook yet. That’s all going to change on Valentine’s Day.

Speaking to Penn Olson today, Rovio revealed that they are bringing their hit Angry Birds to the more than 800 million people on Facebook. The company is planning to launch the game on the social networking service on February 14 in Jakarta, Indonesia. They decided to hold the launch there as it is a major Facebook hub.

Rovio also spoke more in depth on their plans for the Angry Birds franchise as a whole. They said that they plan to have Angry Birds pre-installed in every new Samsung Smart TV and the previous versions of their TVs will get an update that will install the game.

They also want to bring a cloud-like aspect to the game allowing players to save their progress on one device and carry it over to the next.

They also revealed that Angry Birds for Facebook will introduce power-ups that users can buy for a dollar or earn through normal gameplay. The power-ups include an earthquake, or special, bigger or stronger birds. They claim that 40 percent of their users are interested in buying the upgrades compared to three or four percent in other games.

Angry Birds on Facebook will also introduce the obvious social aspect to the game. This will include leaderboards that players can post to so their friends can try to beat them.

They also plan to release more games than it did last year. They only had Rio and Seasons in 2011. They have already released the Chinese New Year variant of Angry Birds this year.

We can’t deny that Angry Birds is a global phenomenon. It has amassed millions of downloads, but Rovio needs to launch a new IP or they risk becoming stagnant. I could be wrong and Angry Birds could become another game franchise that can release the same game every year while seeing massive returns. Only time will tell, but as of right now, Angry Birds looks like the mobile Call of Duty.

  • Angry Birds Hits 500 Million Downloads

Angry Birds Hits 500 Million Downloads

Rovio has announced via YouTube video that their hit game Angry Birds has just surpassed a significant milestone: half a billion downloads.

That’s a lot of downloads in less than two years or existence.

When you combine all the Angry Birds games (classic, Rio, Seasons) across all OS’, that’s when you get this staggering figure. According to Rovio, players across the world have played over 200,000 years worth of Angry Birds. Here are some more interesting facts:

Squawk! Angry Birds, the best selling mobile game in the world, has achieved amazing things. Angry Birds Fans around the world have so far played a total of 200,000 years of Angry Birds, with 300 million minutes of playing time daily.
