  • Hall and Oates Nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Hall and Oates have been nominated for the Class of 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Daryl Hall & John Oates is an American hit-making music duo. They are best known for their hit songs from the late 1970s to the mid 80s. The duo fused rock and roll and rhythm and blues, and dubbed their music “rock and soul.”

Hall and Oates have had an impressive six No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: “Kiss on My List”, “Rich Girl”, “Private Eyes”, “Maneater“, “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)” and “Out of Touch”, as well as a string of Top 40 hits. Hall and Oates are bonafide hitmakers; 34 chart hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, six RIAA albums that went gold and seven that went platinum. Due to their chart success, they outranked The Everly Brother’s as Billboard magazine’s most successful duo of the rock era.

Other nominees for 2014 include Nirvana, Kiss, The Replacements, Peter Gabriel, Deep purple, Chic, N.W.A., LL Cool J, and Cat Stevens among others. The nominees with the most votes will be inducted at the ceremony in New York City in April.

For the second year in a row, the public will be allowed to vote with the artists and members of the music industry. For those that want to vote, simply go to RollingStone.com and vote for your favorite artists from now till December 10th. A “fan ballot” will be counted as one of more than 600 ballots and will be awarded to the top five acts for the Class of 2014.

In order to qualify for the ballot, the nominees had to have released their first album or single in 1988 (25 years ago). You may be wondering how it is that Nirvana is already nominated – has it been 25 years for them already? Yes, it has. The band released a little known cover song called “Love Buzz” by Shocking Blue in 1988 – it was their first single. Nirvana is also the only act this year to be nominated in its first year of eligibility.

  • Nirvana Among Nominees For Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame

Nirvana, the band that changed so much about the music scene and our culture in the ’90s, has finally gotten a nod from the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 22 years after their sophomore album Nevermind was released.

The band achieved a level of fame they never really wanted after their songs resonated with so many fans, mostly kids who felt misunderstood and found comfort in the music and garage-band culture the group spawned. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was of particular success for the band and reached number 6 on the Billboard charts in 1991.

The band’s follow-up album, In Utero, just celebrated its 20th anniversary in September, and while it isn’t considered to be the most successful of their works, it garnered critical acclaim as well as the love of fans despite the negative attention it received for the song “Rape Me”. Sadly, it was to be the group’s last album together, as lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994.

This year marks the first that the band was eligible for a nomination into the Hall of Fame; they are joined by Kiss, Linda Rondstadt, Hall & Oates, and Deep Purple. Fans will be able to vote on their favorites, and winners will be chosen by 600 members of the foundation. The inductees will be announced in December, but the ceremony won’t be held until April 2014, and will air on HBO in May.

  • Axl Rose Said in 1994 that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was an Iconic Organization

50-year-old Axl Rose announced yesterday that he has “respectfully declined his induction as a member of Guns N’ Roses to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame,” in a letter obtained by the L.A. Times.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place in Cleveland on Saturday but Axl has decided to bow out of the appearance.

In 1994 Axl Rose gave a speech at Elton John’s induction to the Hall of Fame and said, “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the musicians who make the music that not only becomes the soundtrack to our lives but it actually helps us get through each day of our life.”

Two years later Guns N’ Roses fell apart.

After reading the letter he sent to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it seems that Rose declined the invitation because he thinks the induction ceremony would be an awkward and complicated affair. He went on to say that he thinks “the Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony doesn’t appear to be somewhere I’m actually wanted or respected.”

He has also requested that he not be “inducted in absentia” and warned people to resist accepting any induction on his behalf.

Towards the end of the letter he made it very clear that Guns N’ Roses will not be reunited: “For anyone to continue to ask, suggest or demand a reunion are misguided attempts to distract from our efforts with our current lineup of myself, Dizzy Reed, Tommy Stinson, Frank Ferrer, Richard Fortus, Chris Pitman, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal and DJ Ashba.”

While he claims he values his fans he went on to insist that he doesn’t owe them any happy endings.

He closed the letter by saying:

“Regardless of this decision and as hard to believe or as ironic as it may seem, I’d like to sincerely thank the board for their nomination and their votes for Guns’ induction. More importantly I’d like to thank the fans for being there over the years, making any success we’ve had possible and for enjoying and supporting Guns N’ Roses music.”

“I wish the Hall a great show, congratulations to all the other artists being inducted and to our fans we look forward to seeing you on tour!!”

Here are some Twitter reactions to his decision:
