  • One Death, 20 Overdoses at Mad Decent Block Party

During an outdoor music festival organized by record label Mad Decent in Columbia, Maryland on Friday, one fan died of an apparent drug overdose, and an additional 20 were transported to an area hospital.

Tyler Fox Viscardi, 20, of Raleigh, North Carolina, died after being rushed to the hospital at 9 p.m. EDT after overdosing at the all-day Mad Decent Block Party, the Howard County Police Department said in a statement.

The concert took place at the Merriweather Post Pavillion, roughly 20 miles southwest of Baltimore, and featured pop and dance artists including
Cashmere Cat, Flux Pavilion, Diplo, Sleigh Bells, Wave Racer and Wolfgang Gartner.

Here is the Mad Decent Block Party 2014 Trailer:

Authorities have not yet determined which drugs were in Viscardi’s system at the time of his death, and another 17-year-old from Virginia is presently in critical condition, after suffering another suspected overdose at the concert. Nineteen other concertgoers were hospitalized with suspected drug-related problems.

Police also issued roughly 50 under-age drinking citations during the festival and made three arrests, including one for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Mad Decent issued a statement on the incident – “We were shocked and saddened when we heard the news from yesterday’s event at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland and our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this right now. We are waiting along with everyone else for more information.”

The next Mad Decent Block Party is scheduled for Friday, August 8 in Philadelphia.

In related Mad Decent news, pop superstar Katy Perry left some people scratching their heads after she was spotted with rapper Riff Raff back in April, and then again with Mad Decent label head Diplo later that month.

Incidentally, video edits of Mr. Raff’s song “Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz” from his new record Neon Icon have become an internet meme:

  • Caffeine Powder Blamed for Teen’s Death

Caffeine Powder Blamed for Teen’s Death

The sudden death of a high school wrestler due to a massive caffeine overdose prompted federal health authorities to warn consumers to avoid the substance.

Keystone High School prom king Logan Stiner, 18, had a lethal amount of caffeine in his system when he died May 27 at his home in LaGrange, Ohio, southwest of Cleveland. An autopsy revealed that Stiner had over 70 micrograms of caffeine per milliliter of blood in his body, which equates to roughly 23 times the amount of a typical soda drinker or Starbucks patron.

Caffeine is a naturally occurring substance found in seeds, leaves and fruit, and acts as a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects, and likewise enhances the euphoric recall of pollinating bugs.

A caffeine overdose at times results in a state of central nervous system over-stimulation called caffeine intoxication. Symptoms include restlessness, twitching, anxiety, excitement, insomnia, a jumbled flow of thought and speech, irritability, heart palpitations and impaired psychomotor skills. Extreme overdoses can lead to psychosis, seizures and death.

Here rapper Riff Raff demonstrates caffeine-induced elation:

While a caffeine overdose would typically require 80-100 cups of coffee for an average adult, it is easier to achieve caffeine toxicity while ingesting caffeine in pill and powdered forms.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Friday that it’s taking a look at caffeine powder products and will ‘‘consider taking regulatory action.’’ It’s also been reported that three states have sued Living Essentials, the manufacturer of the popular 5-Hour Energy shot, for false advertising. It’s been suggested that the only active ingredient in the substance is a high amount of caffeine.

A 1/16th of a teaspoon of caffeine powder, which is commonly used by athletes and those trying to lose weight, can contain about 200 milligrams of caffeine, roughly the equivalent found in two large cups of coffee. Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, warns that a large teaspoon can be fatal.

FDA spokeswoman Jennifer Dooren commented, ‘‘The difference between a safe amount and a lethal dose of caffeine in these powdered products is very small.’’

Dr. Bob Hoffman, a New York University medical toxicologist, remarked, ‘‘The thing about caffeine is just because you see it every day, just because it’s naturally occurring – it comes from a plant – doesn’t mean that it’s safe.’’

  • Katy Perry Spotted with Producer Diplo

Katy Perry Spotted with Producer Diplo

Pop star Katy Perry has been spotted with Los Angeles-based DJ, music producer, rapper and songwriter Wesley Pentz, a.k.a Diplo. The two were seen at the Amazing Spider-Man 2 after-party at Skylight at Moynihan Station in Manhattan, and were “very affectionate, very lovey-dovey,” a source told People Magazine. The source added that as they left the gathering, “they quickly separated. She didn’t want it to look like they were together, but they were.”

Interestingly, Perry, 29, was recently spotted with rapper and performance artist Riff Raff, also known as Horst Christian Simco. Riff Raff happens to be on the roster of Diplo’s own Mad Decent record label, and has been working with the producer on his oft-delayed record entitled Neon Icon, which is set to be released … sometime.

On Friday night, Perry and Diplo attended a birthday party at 1Oak where he performed. The two had previously been seen together at Coachella, and according to a source, “They were hanging out all (Saturday) night at the Jeremy Scott party – and they hung out all day Sunday at Coachella. They checked out Alesso together.”

Perry might simply be working on some sort of musical collaboration with Diplo, 35, and his Mad Decent underlings, after coming off of an abrupt breakup with John Mayer. Perry had dumped Mayer last month, after he allegedly cheated on her with General Hospital actress Kelly Monaco.

Mayer, who once described Jessica Simpson as being “sexual napalm,” apparently failed to understand the concept of using a burner phone to communicate with his paramours, and was busted and promptly let go. A source revealed that “Katy found texts on his phone. She was devastated and realized he’s a sex fiend who isn’t capable of telling the truth.”

During the early stages of his career, Diplo (named after the dinosaur Diplodocus) produced M.I.A.’s hit Paper Planes, and went on to work with Beyoncé, No Doubt, Justin Bieber, Usher, Snoop Lion and G-Dragon.

Perhaps Perry either took a dip in a swimming pool before letting her hair dye and its intended color dry, or maybe she’s fallen under a deeper influence of the zany-haired rapper Riff Raff.

  • Katy Perry Warned About Dating This Guy

Katy Perry Warned About Dating This Guy

When we announced that Katy Perry was dating Houston rapper Riff Raff, you could hear the collective “huh?” from all over the globe, because most were probably baffled how America’s sweetheart could end up with a guy that uses every rap cliche in the book, and doesn’t seem like the settling down type.

And even though the jury is still out on whether the two artists are really a couple or they’re just working on some sort of project together, Riff Raff’s dad, Ronald Simco, warned Perry about dating his son, and said a serious relationship with him probably wouldn’t last.

“If you have a goal, you can’t be sidetracked by relationships,” said Simco. “Yes, date women, but you’re not going to get married. He’s been a love-them-and-leave-them sort of guy because his career is his most important thing. You can’t be blinded by other things that aren’t on your journey.”

Simco also said he’s not surprised his son is dating the Dark Horse singer, because Riff Raff has always felt he’d be famous one day, and would eventually hangout in the most A-list of celebrity circles.

“I knew he’d make it big,” said papa Riff Raff. “I’m not surprised he’s dating the biggest pop star on the planet. I’m very close to my son and he’s always been a hit with the ladies, always had a mind-set that he was going to be famous.”

For the past couple of years, the braided haired rapper really made a big name for himself and snagged huge collaborations with some of the biggest names in rap, but in an interview with Rolling Stone he said he might be famous, but not rich, however he plans to change all of that very soon.

And the worst part about having fame without a lot of money, says Riff Raff, is not being able to afford a place that allows him to get away from the limelight.

“I might have another interview next spring and I’ll have a house with a basketball court and somebody serving you lemonade,” he said back in 2013. “But right now I’m in an apartment where I have to take the elevator with people. I’m in the middle. I’m famous, but I’m not as rich as Brad Pitt.”

  • Katy Perry Spotted with Riff Raff

Pop star Katy Perry was recently seen out on a “date” with rapper and performance artist Riff Raff, also known as Horst Christian Simco. Perry had abruptly dumped singer John Mayer last month, after Mayer allegedly cheated on her with General Hospital actress Kelly Monaco.

A source had commented that Mayer and Monaco “hooked up immediately. She was open to the things that John’s into, like sexy toys, tying each other up and threesomes. He couldn’t get enough. Kelly was still on his mind. He would text her and try and get her to meet him either at his place in L.A. or a hotel out in the Valley.”

Mayer, who once described Jessica Simpson as being “sexual napalm,” apparently didn’t understand the concept of using a burner phone to communicate with his paramours, and was busted and promptly let go. “Katy found texts on his phone. She was devastated and realized he’s a sex fiend who isn’t capable of telling the truth.”

Perry then posted a shot of her with Riff Raff to Instagram on March 20th, taken during an outing which included sushi, bowling and a couple of drinks after a Skrillex party.

Riff Raff took to Twitter to comment on the rendezvous:

Mr. Raff had told TMZ that he is open for another date, which he referred to as “round two.” Perry meanwhile traveled to Belgium soon after the bowling outing.

Here Riff Raff shows off his Brazilian House, featuring the Tiffany-inspired chandelier he’d bought from Mike Tyson:

Though, there is a possibility that Perry and Riff Raff are merely collaborating on his oft-delayed new record entitled Neon Icon, which is set to be released this month. Other rumored collaborators include Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, YG, Snoop Dogg, Future, Juicy J, Bun B, Paul Wall, Action Bronson, Asher Roth, Mike Posner, Big Sean and 2 Chainz.

Here the Neon Icon, a.k.a Neonardo DiCaprio, displays his new berry-flavored hairdo:

Perry was recently quoted saying she wants to dye her hair “slime green,” so perhaps she shares a deeper bond with Simco.

  • Rapper Gucci Mane Arrested

    Rapper Gucci Mane Arrested

Rapper/actor/tattoo enthusiast Gucci Mane was arrested for disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon Saturday, according to Atlanta police. The incident took place on an Atlanta street, early in the morning, after a friend of the rapper flagged down police due to Mane’s odd behavior.

Mane, 33, whose legal name is Radric Davis, became “increasingly agitated,” according to police, spewing insults and threats at the officers. He was taken into custody, when police found a handgun and a bit of marijuana in his possession.

Mane, who recently appeared in Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers,” can be seen with rapper Future in his video for “Fu*k Da World,” below:

Incidentally, actor James Franco’s character in Spring Breakers is said to be based on the greatest rapper who’s ever lived, Riff Raff.

    Riff Raff’s “Jose Canseco” video:

Gucci Mane was also arrested in Atlanta in March, after clubbing a fan over the head with a champagne bottle, and faced charges for violating a number of traffic laws in the city in 2010. Mane was also charged in the shooting death of a man in 2005, but the case was dropped due to insufficient evidence.
