Mamie Gummer Acts Mean To Mother Meryl Streep On Camera

Mamie Gummer had her worries with acting mean towards her mother. The actress talks about her film with Oscar-winning actress and real life mother Meryl Streep.

The two appear together in the film Ricki and the Flash with Rick Springfield as Meryl Streep’s love interest and bandmate.

Gummer said, “It was a little bit troubling to look at the person that you love most in the world and just…” Gummer gesture something like clawing. “It was a little bit alarming how quickly that all was accessed, and I was worried that I would be wounding to her in some way” she added.

Being the professional actress that she is, Meryl Streep was rather proud of her daughter as quoted by US Daily, “I was blown away. I’m not objective — I think she’s fantastic. … But I think other people have corroborated that.”

The film Ricki and the Flash tells the story of a rock star mom played by Meryl Streep, who constantly reaches out to her estranged daughter played by Mamie Gummer.

The real life mother and daughter first appeared together in the movie Heartburn, which was released in 1986. Gummer was a baby then. Twenty-nine years after, the two collaborate once again on the big screen.

On her experience working with her mother, Gummer said, “It was a wonderful and quite profound experience.”

“[The best thing about working with my mom] is the shorthand, I guess. And also how respectful she is of everyone on a project. It makes for a really pleasant experience,” she said during the premiere.

Meryl Streep also told reporters during their film’s New York premiere, “I’m very proud of all my children—all my daughters and my son—yeah. It’s not just her. I’ve got some stars at home too.”

Mamie Gummer of ‘Ricki and the Flash’ Shares What It’s Like Working With Mom Meryl Streep

Mamie Gummer, Meryl Streep’s 32-year-old daughter, shared what it’s like to work with her famous, award-winning mother in their collaboration, Ricki and the Flash.

In an interview with ET Online, Mamie Gummer said there was one downside to working with her mom.

“She had a much larger dressing room than I did,” said Gummer.

In Ricki and the Flash, Streep and Mamie play a mother and daughter working through some issues. Streep plays rocker Ricki, who goes home to her family after leaving them in hopes of being a rockstar. When she returns, Ricki learns that daughter Julie has been dumped by her husband. Add some resentment over her mother’s abandonment and it leads to a lot of stress between the two and some confrontations, which proved difficult for Mamie Gummer.

“I was nervous about it, leading up to filming it,” said Gummer. “She was fine. I think she was pleased actually. It was funny because I tear into her and when we called cut there was this big grin on her face.”

The fact that Mamie has felt some of the same emotions as her character added to the strain, although they actresses have always enjoyed a strong relationship.

“There was no point in my life that I felt abandoned,” admitted Mamie. “My mom worked really hard, and I know sacrificed on both ends, but to really maintain a pretty fair balance, and we were always the priority.”

Meryl Streep has wonderful things to say about her daughter, who starred in The Newsroom.

“She’s brave and fearless and funny and free,” Meryl Streep told People magazine. “She’s a free talent. It doesn’t have any cover up – she’s the real deal.”

Ricki and the Flash starring Mamie Gummer, Meryl Streep and Rick Springfield hits theaters on Aug. 7.

  • Meryl Streep To Star In New Diablo Cody Film

Meryl Streep To Star In New Diablo Cody Film

To all the closeted Mamma Mia fans out there: it’s time to pretend not to be excited about a music-themed movie starring Meryl Streep again. Streep, the only woman Americans would ever elect as president (her charm temporarily numbs voters to gender limitations), has been slotted to star in the upcoming film Ricki and the Flash, written by Diablo Cody of Juno fame.

Columbia TriStar beat out several other big-name studios to distribute the project due to their willingness, as we say in the industry, to fast track this one. The film will begin production in the fall with acclaimed director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) at the helm. “We feel lucky as hell to have been selected by such outstanding filmmakers,” said TriStar chairman Tom Rothman. “I have been fortunate enough to have personally worked with each of the Fab Four talents involved here before and know well how supremely gifted they are.” It can be safely assumed the fab four Rothman is referencing are Meryl Streep, Meryl Streep’s smile, Meryl Streep’s talent, and Meryl Streep’s unwavering moral center.

The film revolves around an aging rock star (Streep) who is striving to repair strained relationships with her children. It seems the children were not very bright, as simply being birthed by someone resembling Meryl Streep should be enough to win Rock Star Mother/Streep eternal gratitude. However, they are a bit upset about being abandoned for rock n’ roll and having to raise themselves, etc., and the story will focus on Streep’s attempts to get the family back to something resembling the nuclear structure.

Also, not to make any Musical Meryl fans combust, but while you wait for the release of Ricki and the Flash, you can give your Mamma Mia blue-ray a rest and pop into theaters this Christmas for Disney’s Into the Woods, in which Meryl will be singing her beautiful, selfless heart out as The Witch. Word still out on how Disney will costume Streep for the role to convincingly conceal her golden heart (and hair, and skin).
