Renee Zellweger made waves recently with a seemingly drastic change to her appearance.
The actress, who hasn’t done much on screen lately, defended her strange (almost unrecognizable) new look by saying that she was just older and healthier.
Renee Zellweger said of the widespread criticism, “I’m glad folks think I look different! I’m living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I’m thrilled that perhaps it shows.”
“People don’t know me [as] healthy for a while,” Renee Zellweger told People shortly after her appearance. “Perhaps I look different. Who doesn’t as they get older?! Ha. But I am different. I’m happy.”
Although Renee Zellweger’s response seemed highly suspect to many, she has several other women of Hollywood who have her back.

When asked at a Hollywood Reporter actress roundtable discussion about the criticism Renee Zellweger received, Reese Witherspoon and her colleagues came to her defense.

Witherspoon said of Renee Zellweger’s ordeal, “It’s horrible. It’s cruel and rude and disrespectful, and I can go on and on and on. It bothers me immensely.”
She later added, “I know this is so Pollyanna of me, but why — and it’s particularly women — why do they have to tear women down? And why do we have to tear other women down to build another woman up? It drives me crazy. Like, this one looks great without her makeup but that one doesn’t look good without her makeup, and it’s all just a judgment and assault that I don’t — look, men are prey to it as well. I just don’t think it’s with the same sort of ferocity.”
Felicity Jones chimed in for Renee Zellweger, saying, “What’s sad is when people start to self-censor and start not doing certain things because they’re worried what X or Y is going to think about it.”
