  • Rene Angelil Eulogized by Teenage Son at Funeral, Celine Dion No Doubt Very Proud

Rene Angelil was celebrated at a funeral at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal on Friday–the same church where he married Celine Dion back in 1994. It was broadcast live on Canadian TV.

Rene Charles Angelil, the 14-year-old son of Rene Angelil and Celine Dion, gave a poignant eulogy for his late father.

“Fifteen years is not a long time for a son to get to know his father,” René-Charles said in the eulogy. “You had a busy life, but we were communicating through golf, hockey, poker, smoked meat, and a lot of other wonderful food, bonding more and more as time went by.”

“You left me now with enough good memories of you to share with my younger brothers,” the teen continued. “As they grow older without you being around, I’ll make sure to pass on what I’ve learned from you. You are a tough act to follow, but with your help everything is going to be fine. Dad, I promise you here that we are all going to live up to your standards.”

The late Rene Angelil and wife Celine Dion are also parents to five-year-old twin boys, Nelson and Eddy. They attended the funeral with their mother and older brother, but weren’t spotted at the wake inside the basilica on Thursday. Rene Charles stayed by his mother’s side throughout the wake, as she greeted a countless numbers of mourners for much longer than planned.

Rene Angelil’s son from a previous relationship–Patrick–also spoke at his father’s funeral.

Rene Angelil died of throat cancer on January 14–just days ahead of his 74th birthday.

Celine Dion is no doubt very proud of son Rene Charles. He certainly honored his father by delivering his eulogy on Friday. Celine hugged Rene Charles once he was finished speaking.

  • Rene Angelil to Be Laid to Rest Friday, Celine Dion Returns to Work Saturday

Rene Angelil will be laid to rest following a funeral on Friday. On Saturday his wife Celine Dion will return to work. She is scheduled to perform as part of her Caesar’s Palace residency in Las Vegas, and she plans to take the stage as scheduled.

“That’s what René would want. He wants her to perform and come back,” a source close to Celine Dion tells People magazine. “He knew her better than anybody and he probably knows that’s what she needs too, to perform.”

Rene Angelil died last Thursday at 73. Just days later, Celine Dion also lost her brother, Daniel Dion, to cancer.

The source adds that Rene Angelil had a feeding tube for most of the last year, adding that he had “good and bad days.”

“Some days he could get up and walk around the room, play with the kids. Some days he was too tired,” the source continued.

Celine Dion is said to be “extremely heartbroken,” according to that same source.

The funeral for Rene Angelil will be held at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, where he and Celine Dion married 21 years ago.

Rene Angelil had one wish in his final weeks. He wanted to die in Celine Dion’s arms. While no one has indicated whether or not he received his dying wish, Dion and their children were at home with Rene Angelil when he passed away.

It will no doubt be incredibly difficult for Celine Dion to return to the stage on Saturday night. Knowing it’s what her husband would want might help ease her pain, however–even if only for a bit.
