    727-Pound Alligator Killed in Mississippi

This weekend, the first weekend of alligator season in Mississippi, two people broke the state record for the heaviest alligator that has been documented only hours apart.

The previous record for the heaviest alligator was 697.5 pounds, and it was taken from the Pascagoula River in 2008. This record was first broken by Beth Trammell who took a 13-foot, 5.5-inch long, 723.5-pound alligator early on Sunday morning in Issaquenna County in the Yazoo Diversion Canal. However, Trammell only held the record for approximately an hour before a new one was set once again.

Later on Sunday, Dustin Bockman, who is a UPS driver from Vicksburg, took the 727-pound alligator from the Mississippi River in Claiborne County. His alligator was 13-feet, 4.5-inches long. To assist him with the alligator, Bockman’s brother, Ryan Bockman, and his friend, Cole Landers was there.

Catching this alligator was no easy task for Bockman. The alligator put up a fight and it took him, his brother, and his friend over an hour to get the alligator to them to where they could get a kill shot. “He broke all the lines we could put in him. Finally put a snare on him and got him up high enough and put a shot on him. All in all probably took us four and a half hours to catch him from the first time we saw him,” Bockman said on Monday.

One would think that it would be hard to top catching a 723-pound gator and breaking a state record just days into hunting season, right? Wrong. That record lasted barely an hour when another hunting team bagged a 727-pound gator.

Gator hunting season is in full swing in Mississippi, and apparently there are plenty of behemoth gators to go around. After Beth Trammell of Madison broke the state record by catching an alligator that weighed in at 723.5 pounds and was nearly 13.5 feet long (26 pounds heavier than the previous record), she was only able to enjoy the victory for about an hour. While there is no doubt she can keep the title of Queen of the Swamp for her catch, her name won’t be next to “heaviest catch” as far as the state of Mississippi is concerned. That designation goes to Dustin Bockman, a UPS driver from Vicksburg.

Bockman, who had never previously gator hunted before, set a high bar for his personal gator fishing career on his first trip. The gator hunting gods were certainly smiling down on the novice hunter as he ventured down the Mississippi River with his brother and friend. Taking advantage of the night sky, which makes gators more visible as their eyes reflect light, the hunters spotted the massive gator.

After chasing the beast for two hours, Bockman shot the 727-pound, 13-foot, four-inch gator with a crossbow, a method that may seem a little unconventional to those familiar with gator fishing thanks to The History Channel’s Swamp People. Unfortunately for this gator hunter, the battle didn’t end there. After waiting a couple hours to finish off the gator with a gun, Bockman then had to wait for help to arrive to load up the gator. “We killed the alligator at 4 a.m. We waited until 6:30 (a.m.) before I called three or four more guys to help us load it into the boat,” Bockman said.

While larger alligators certainly fetch higher prices, Bockman has no plans to sell his catch. In an interview with NBC, Bockman said he plays to use the hide and share the gator meat. “We’re going to cook it for sure. I got a bunch of people who want some, and there’s plenty for me and everybody else,” Bockman said.

Bockman’s record may not last too long since gator season is just getting underway, but he certainly has a quite a story to tell for his first time gator hunting.

  • The Avengers Hulk-Smashes Box Office Records, and My Expectations

The Avengers Hulk-Smashes Box Office Records, and My Expectations

I can’t stop thinking about The Avengers; every time I try, some scene will randomly pop up in my head which immediately leads to me smiling. Have you ever had that first date where everything about it completely exceeded expectations? Where there could easily have been an awkward pause, or a portion of the date that was just boring, but then a miracles happens and none it occurs. This is the essence of what took place with The Avengers. Which is why it’s not surprising the movie obliterated box office records with a $200.3 million earning in its first US weekend.

To put things in perspective, The Avengers beat out Harry Potter and The Dark Knight, both by more than $30 million in its first domestic weekend. The previous record belonged to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which earned $169 million in its first Friday-Sunday run. While it didn’t set a record for Friday, which is still held by Potter with $91.1 million, it still pulled in $80 million which is quite impressive for early May when school is still in session for most. However, it set gross records for both Saturday & Sunday.

While this was the first weekend the movie debuted in the states, many countries and territories were going into their second Avengers weekend. Lumping all of the international figures together, the movie has generated $441 million in revenue for all the showings overseas. If you’ve been keeping up with the math, it leaves The Avengers Disney sitting on top of a $641 million haul thus far in revenue. Which makes the below image apt.

While $641 million is what Lone Starr from Spaceballs refers to as a ‘shit-load of money’, the financial forecast for the next weekend is hurting my brain. The Avengers is set to make $1 billion total in revenue by next Sunday. When Disney bought out Marvel, they wrote a check for $4 billion. So while Disney’s profit from The Avengers going into the weekend won’t be $1 billion, it’s incredible to think their projected revenue will be 1/4th of the entire bill paid for the Marvel brand. Disney has been accused of many things throughout the years, but dumb investments isn’t one of them.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Avengers, and there’s a good chance I’ll double dip to go see it again sometime this week. While it isn’t the best movie ever, I really do think it is the most amazing we’ve seen thus far. It pushes the envelope of not only what we should expect from comic book movies, but blockbuster films in general. When all is said in done, we’ll be placing the movie aside King Kong, Star Wars, and Jurassic Park in terms of all time great film spectacles.

Just in case you’re still under that proverbial rock, here’s the latest Avengers trailer. Even it doesn’t do the full movie justice.
