Ratchet & Clank Makes The Jump To Mobile

Sony has made it clear that it wants to make mobile games that tie into its console titles, like Knack’s Quest. Now the publisher has released its second mobile tie-in – an endless runner starring Ratchet & Clank.

Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus is now available on iOS and Android devices. The game is positioned as a prequel of sorts to the PS3 title Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus. Interestingly enough, it seems that the developers have been able to preserve some of the classic Ratchet & Clank gameplay in the transition to an endless runner. Ratchet can still use many of his outlandish weapons while running and players can earn bolts to buy even more weapons.

Just like in Knack’s Quest, Before the Nexus gives players a chance to earn rewards in the console title. In this case, players can earn raritanium that can then be brought over to the PS3 game.

  • Here Are The Weapons From Ratchet & Clank: Into The Nexus

Next month, Insomniac Games will be saying goodbye to the current generation of consoles with a new Ratchet & Clank title. The new game – titled Into the Nexus – serves to wrap up the story that started with Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. It also promises a whole bevy of new weapons.

Speaking of weapons, Sony released a new trailer today for Into the Nexus that’s all about the weapons players will use throughout the game. The Ratchet & Clank series has always been known for its outlandish weapons and this game is no different.

The weapons on display in this latest trailer include the Netherbeast, the Nightmare Box, the Vortex Grenade, the Winterizer, the Netherbaldes and the Zurkons. The latter is by far the most interesting as it brings back the fan-favorite Mr. Zurkon from Tools of Destruction, but with the added twist that Mr. Zurkon is now joined by his wife and son.

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus will launch on November 12 exclusively for the PS3.

  • ‘Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus’ Coming November 12

Since Insomniac’s Fuse flopped, the developer has turned to more familiar territory this month. The developer and Sony announced Ratchet & Clank: INto the Nexus back in July. The game brings back the beloved PlayStation characters in a smaller format and serves as an epilogue for the series’ “Future” trilogy.

Though not many details have been revealed beyond a nice gameplay trailer back in August, Sony today announced the release date for the title. Into the Nexus will appear in the PlayStation Store on November 12. The game will also be available on-disc from retailers and costs only $30. Pre-ordering from “participating retailers” nabs players a Pyronox Armor costume for Ratchet, and an Amazon pre-order also includes a bunch of Ratchet & Clank items for PlayStation Home.

The date is a bit odd, as it comes just three days before the launch of Sony’s PlayStation 4 console on November 15. Into the Nexus appears set to be yet another title to tug on Sony fans’ already-stretched wallets during November, but having too many new games to buy and play may not actually be a problem at all.

A short behind-the-scenes clip of Into the Nexus‘s development was released along with the release date announcement. It’s done in the style of a 90’s PR video and is pretty cheesy:

  • Ratchet And Clank: Into The Nexus Gets A 5-Minute Gameplay Trailer

Insomniac Games is keeping themselves busy this year with development on two titles – Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus for the PS3 and Sunset Overdrive for the Xbox One. The latter wasn’t at Gamescom, but the former got a little love from Sony.

Despite not showing off the game at its press conference, Sony shared a new trailer for Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus at Gamescom. The 5-minute trailer is a refreshing change from other trailers shown at Gamescom as it’s nothing but gameplay.

In the demo, Insomniac says the latest Ratchet and Clank title is returning to the basics instead of the experimental gameplay of the last two titles. In other words, players can expect to platform and shoot their way a number of colorful worlds.

The demo also shows off some new weapons, including the Winterizer. It turns enemies into their own unique snowmen while playing holiday music. It adds a touch of humor to a game that the developers say will be a tad darker than past Ratchet and Clank titles in both its story and presentation.

As an aside, it’s exciting to see a Ratchet and Clank game looking this good. The past few games on the PS3 were no visual slouches, but it looks like the team at Insomniac have really outdone themselves with this one.

Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus will be available on PS3 this holiday season.
