  • Ridley Scott Filmed Slammed for ‘Racist’ Casting; Rupert Murdoch Tweets Odd Defense

Ridley Scott’s latest film, Exodus: Gods and Kings, is being attacked for having an all-white cast. Some believe that this is way out of bounds since the film is largely set in Egypt.

Exodus, which stars Christian Bale as Moses, was directed by Ridley Scott and distributed by 20th Century Fox. Ridley Scott told Variety that his cast is white for a simple reason: money.

“I can’t mount a film of this budget, where I have to rely on tax rebates in Spain, and say that my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such,” Scott explained. “I’m just not going to get it financed. So the question doesn’t even come up.”

As Variety points out about the very white casting, “the same could be said of The Passion of the Christ, Noah, The Ten Commandments and virtually any other big-budget Bible movies.”

But Rupert Murdoch, who owns 20th Century Fox, was not going to let this one go by quietly. He had been seeing comments on Twitter about the all-white cast.

So Murdoch took to Twitter to defend his investment.

As expected, his odd defense did not sit well.

    So Murdoch hit back again.

But his detractors got the last laugh.

  • Why Is Hulk Hogan Getting Mentioned In Ferguson Shooting?

After a controversial grand jury decision to not indict Darren Wilson in the shooting of Michael Brown, it’s been reported that Wilson’s testimony regarding the shooting has been made available to public. It is Wilson’s only detailed account of the incident on record. According to Wilson’s testimony, Brown became confrontational when the police officer asked him and his friend to stop walking in the middle of the street. “I’ve never seen that much aggression so quickly from a simple request to just walk on the sidewalk,” Wilson said in the testimony.

Wilson says that Brown became even more aggressive as he was about to step out the police car to confront the teen. Brown slammed the door before Wilson got out and a struggle ensued between the two. “I tried to hold his right arm and use my left hand to get out to have some type of control and not be trapped in my car anymore,” Wilson said. “And when I grabbed him, the only way I can describe it is I felt like a five-year-old holding on to Hulk Hogan,” Wilson testified. Wilson claims that Brown punched him a couple of times

The police officer then felt that the best course of action to defend himself was to reach for his gun. He testified that he was wearing contacts that day, so using mace inside a confined space would have blinded him. After his gun malfunctioned, he was finally able to shoot Brown who then ran away. Wilson gave chase and shot Brown a couple of more time before delivering the fatal blow to Brown’s head.

Lori Lightfoot, a formal federal prosecutor in Chicago, said in a phone interview that Wilson still used excessive force and the prosecutor’s summary failed to show any evidence as to why Wilson had to use his gun. “Why were those shots necessary?” Lightfoot began. “That question was not answered. People are not going to feel satisfied until they understand what the evidence was and what reasonable conclusions could be drawn from that evidence.”

  • KKK Linked To Ferguson Police Dept. According To Anonymous

The online hacktivist group Anonymous dumped personal information online belonging to alleged members of the Ku Klux Klan. This is just part of the group’s campaign against the white supremacists who threatened to use lethal force against protesters following the grand jury’s decision not to indict Darren Wilson. Anonymous also claims to have taken over the @KuKluxKlanUSA Twitter account. In a new video, the group threatened to shut down Missouri government websites to protest the grand jury’s decision.

One of Anonymous’ goals is to establish a link between the Ferguson Police Department and a local chapter of the KKK. It’s been reported that a mole inside the St. Louis County Police Department provided information about matter. An offshoot of Anonymous called NOWsec is spearheading what is called “Operation KKK”. NOWsec is alleging that Wilson is part of “The Ghost Squad”, a group of police officers who are silent members of the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. According to Anonymous, they have managed to acquire evidence about Ferguson PD’s ties with the KKK but they could not publish it because it would endanger their mole’s safety.

Racial tensions have been high in Ferguson, Missouri recently after Wilson shot and killed Michael Brown. This is just one of the many instances of white police officers killing young African-Americans under questionable circumstances. After the grand jury announced their decision not to indict Wilson for the shooting, citizens took to the streets.

During the grand jury, Wilson delivered his testimony. This is the only time he spoke about the shooting. According to Wilson, he stopped Brown and a companion after hearing reports of a robbery in a cigar store. Brown allegedly harassed the police officer, leaving him no choice but to pull out his gun. Wilson first shot Brown from inside the car, but after Brown ran away, the police officer gave chase. Wilson shot him a few more times before delivering the fatal blow with a shot to the head. “When he fell, he fell on his face,” Wilson recalled. “I remember his feet coming up… and then they rested.”

On Monday, November 24, the Flood Christian Church as well as many other buildings in the area were set on fire. It is worth noting that Brown’s father, Michael Brown Sr., was a member of the church. This led pastor Carlton Lee to speculate that white supremacists were the ones behind the church burning to “punish him for his support of the Brown family”.

  • Obama Condemns Furguson Violence

President Barack Obama harshly criticized protesters Tuesday night for the racially charged violence in Ferguson, Missouri, after mayhem erupted after a grand jury refused to indict a white police officer who shot a black teenager.

Speaking from Chicago, Obama declared, “To those who think that what happened in Ferguson is an excuse for violence, I do not have any sympathy for that. I have no sympathy at all for destroying your own communities.”

The President also conveyed his understanding of why citizens were so upset by the outcome of the shooting investigation.

“The frustrations that we’ve seen are not about a particular incident. They have deep roots in many communities of color who have a sense that our laws are not always being enforced uniformly or fairly,” Obama said.

The President added, “There are productive ways of responding and expressing those frustrations, and there are destructive ways of responding. Burning buildings, torching cars, destroying property, putting people at risk. That’s destructive and there’s no excuse for it. Those are criminal acts and people should be prosecuted if they engage in criminal acts.”

Furguson police officer Darren Wilson, 28, shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown on August 9, during an altercation.

Protesters in Furguson began burning police cars, smashing and looting storefront windows and firing gunshots, shortly after the verdict was read.

Obama added, “My message to those people who are constructively moving forward, trying to organize, mobilize and ask important questions about how we improve the situation, I want all those folks to know that their president is going to work with them.”

Obama remarked, “The frustrations people have generally are rooted in some hard truths that have to be addressed. Those who are prepared to work constructively, your president will work with you. So don’t take the short-term, easy route and just engage in destructive behavior.”

  • Halle Berry Takes Gabriel Aubry to Court for Trying to Make Their Daughter White

Halle Berry took her ex-husband Gabriel Aubry to court recently, claiming that he is trying to make their daughter white. She further claimed that Aubry used racial epithets to refer to her (Berry).

Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry were together from 2005-2010, during which time they had their daughter, Nahla, who is now six years old.

Court documents show that one of the issues Berry brought up against Aubry was that he was straightening and lightening Nahla’s dark, naturally curly hair. Berry, who is herself half Caucasian and half African-American, claimed that this was an attempt to obscure Nahla’s African-American heritage.

Berry said that Aubry had caused Nahla “potential psychological and physical damage,” and could cause her to wonder “why her natural appearance is not good enough.”

To support her claim that Aubry has a problem with Nahla’s black heritage, Berry pointed out that Aubry had used racial slurs about her during their custody battle, and had been reprimanded for them by the judge in the case.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mark Juhas had said of Aubry’s racist remarks:

“The racial epithet made by Petitioner [Aubry] was and is completely and totally unacceptable. Nahla is a child of both of these parents, making this sort of comment about Respondent [Berry] affect the very core and being of Nahla. And when Petitioner attacked Respondent for what she is and who she is, he was attacking Nahla because Nahla is part Respondent. And Nahla is part Petitioner. So when Petitioner did those things, that does serious damage to Nahla because he is attacking her core being, who she is.”

Berry and Aubry have already made headlines in the years since they split when Berry wanted to move to France with current husband, French actor Oliver Martinez. Berry and Martinez have a sone together, and Berry wanted to take Nahla to France with her.

Berry told InStyle Magazine that she wanted to take Nahla to France so they could have privacy.

“I don’t want her to grow up around the tabloids,” Berry said. “Because we are followed all the time, she is starting to feel like she is somehow special, and of course she is, but I want her to understand that she’s special because of who she is, not because she was born into this celebrity blender.”

Aubry fought the move in court, claiming it would interfere with the custody arrangement they had in place. In the end, a judge agreed with Aubry. The couple came to an amicable arrangement for custody, but earlier this year Berry was ordered to pay Aubry $16,000 a month in child support.

  • Teacher Suspended Over ‘Dumb Duck Ass Crackers’ Tweet

In another episode of you can’t say that shit on Twitter, a Duncanville, Texas high school teacher has been suspended after sending out a rather explicit tweet.

“Who the fuck made you dumb duck ass crackers think I give a squat fuck about your opinions about my opinions RE: #Ferguson? Kill yourselves,” tweeted English teacher Vinita Hegwood on Friday. As soon as the tweet made its way to the eyes of school officials, they promised quick action.

And they delivered. Hegwood has been suspended without pay.

“Early this morning district officials met with Ms. Hegwood, the teacher who stated reprehensible personal opinions on her personal social media account. The district took swift action and exercised the fullest disciplinary action allowed under district policy. Ms. Hegwood was placed on suspension without pay pending discharge. Under state law, a school district’s Board of Trustees “fires” staff members, and the district will pursue that action with the board soon. In the meantime, the teacher has been placed on suspension without pay pending discharge,” said the school district.

Hegwood has deleted her entire Twitter account, but as you know, nothing truly disappears once it’s out there.

“The district wants the community to know that the actions of this one individual does not and should not represent the school district. Every day, two hundred and forty Duncanville High School teachers provide a school environment that fosters academic excellence, good citizenship and respect for others. Teachers give their life’s work to shaping the future, and this one individual does not represent our staff or our district.

This concludes this week’s episode of you can’t say that shit on Twitter.

  • Sephora Doesn’t Trust Its Asian Customers? Allegedly Deactivated Accounts According To Race

As beauty supply giant Sephora could be about to learn the hard way, what seems like a simple and logical solution is actually grounds for a MAJOR lawsuit.

Trouble began brewing Friday morning when Sephora made the following announcement on its Facebook page:

The reality is that in taking steps to restore website functionality, some of our loyal North American and international clients got temporarily blocked. We understand how frustrating it is and are deeply sorry for the disruption to your shopping experience.

However, in some instances we have, indeed, de-activated accounts due to reselling — a pervasive issue throughout the industry and the world. As part of our ongoing commitment to protecting our clients and our brands, we have identified certain entities who take advantage of promotional opportunities to purchase products in large volume on our website and re-sell them through other channels.

After careful consideration, we have deactivated these accounts in order to optimize product availability for the majority of our clients.

Everything seems in order…until you scroll to the comments section.

Allegedly, the entirety of accounts deactivated by the retailer belong to Asian customers. As in ANYONE with a surname that would give the impression that they from Asia; if your first name is “Westernized”, you are supposedly in the clear.

An incriminating screencap was posted that seems to verify that the majority of people who were locked out of their account were in fact East Asian:

There seems to be a steady flow of notably Asian customers to the Sephora Facebook to beg to have their accounts back following an alleged blatant act of discrimination.

    And that’s simply not good.

It would be one thing if there were a number of visibly non-Asian individuals on the page complaining about the mix-up.

However, the appearance that Sephora locked out individuals based on their ethnic identity alone practically screams racism to the heavens.

What’s perhaps MORE puzzling is why Sephora would risk its reputation rather than simply limit the amount of items that can be purchased at any given time?

If it’s impossible to buy in bulk, shenanigans are will likely NOT ensue.

It’s a solution that Sephora could very well be kicking itself over in the future. Especially if the accusations are eventually validated and the company finds itself facing one heck of a class action lawsuit.

Do you think Sephora knowingly targeted Asian customers? If so, was the move a racist one?

  • Artie Lange’s Mouth Gets Him Blacklisted Over Racist Sex Jokes

Artie Lange tweets a lot of pretty offensive stuff. But the Stern Show veteran knows his audience and usually doesn’t catch too much flak over what he says.

“I wrote a script giving Hollywood what they want–PC! A movie with me as the black gay addict whore who’s HIV-positive but helps a retarded friend.”

“Like other great artists, I traveled for inspiration. Seeing the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam led to the most controversial poem I’ve done. I called it, ‘Is it Me or Did Anne Frank Have Plenty of Room?’”

On Tuesday evening, Lange was watching ESPN’s First Take with Cari Champion, who is African-American. He posted several things about a sexual fantasy featuring Champion, including this:

And that set the Interwebs ablaze. ESPN commented that the tweets were “reprehensible.”

“His comments were reprehensible and no one should be subjected to such hateful language,” the network said in a statement on Wednesday. “They objectify and demean one of our valued employees under the thin guise of “comedy” and are offensive to all of us. We will not dignify them with any other comment.”

But they did make another comment. They banned him from the network entirely.

Lange took it all in stride.

But then came the cancellation from Comedy Central, a place Lange has always been welcome.

Lange refused to apologize to anyone but Cari Champion herself, at first.

Later he broadened his apology, saying that a black friend of his was threatened over his tweets. In an attempt to quell the furor, he made a concession.

  • C-SPAN Caller Calls The President a ‘N––ger’ on Live TV

In don’t tell me we no longer have a problem with race in this country news, a C-SPAN caller called the President of the United States a “n-gger” on live television.

The conversation started off reasonably enough.

“I would just like to say, that the Republicans – and I’m a Republican – please do not overreach,” said the caller. “I know they’re going to overreach but I’m telling you, if you advocate for the repeal of Obamacare and you get too extreme, then Hillary Clinton will be elected President in 2016.”

    And then this happened:

“This is about race … the Republicans hate that nigger Obama.”

C-SPAN’s Steve Scully, visibly shocked, cut the caller off.

“I’m gonna stop you there. We’re not gonna use that kind of language,” he said. “You can certainly make your point, but you cross the line when you use language like that.”

    He then apologized to viewers.

    It’s 2014, folks.

  • Ku Klux Klan Garb Used To Protest Burqa In Australian Parliament

In protest of the repeal of an interim rule requiring people with facial coverings such as burqas to be seated separately from the public galleries, one Australian protester wore a Ku Klux Klan hood in Parliament. The protester was accompanied by a man wearing a motorcycle helmet and another man wearing a niqab, and all three men attempted to enter the Australian Parliament House on Monday, October 27.

Presiding officers of Parliament made a rule on October 2 for people wearing facial coverings to sit in a separate area usually reserved for schoolchildren and required all visitors to temporarily remove their garments at the entrance. The rule was intended to keep protesters dressed in concealing garments from entering Parliament. However, after harsh criticism of the rule, it was repealed starting on Monday.

The protesters, identified as Sergio Redegalli, Nick Folkes and Victor Waterson, said that they were part of a group called “Faceless” and were opposed to the wearing of the burqa in public places. They also strongly believed that the “polictical ideology” of Islam was “contrary” to Australian beliefs.

Police reportedly stopped the protestors as they made their way from the Old Parliament House to the Parliament House forecourt. The protestors were told that the Klu Klux hood and motorcycle helmet would have to be taken off, but the person wearing the niqab was allowed to keep it on. In the end, all three men were screened as part of normal procedures and emerged without their facial coverings.

Since the facial coverings brought by the protesters were apparently considered as “protest paraphernalia,” the Department of Parliamentary Services required removal of the coverings. This was reportedly in accordance with a longstanding policy that protest paraphernalia was only allowed in authorized assembly areas but not in other areas of Parliament.

The Australian Christian Lobby’s Queensland director, Wendy Francis, said that the protest was hurtful to Muslim women in the country and that it was “distressing” to see a Klu Klux Klan outfit in Parliament. “To identify that [the KKK] with a Muslim woman is extremely confronting and hurtful,” said Francis.

  • Klu Klux Klan In Australia? A Reminder That America’s Hate-Filled Legacy Is NO Secret

When looking for an outfit as part of an anti-Muslim protest at the Australian Parliament House, one man opted for a Klu Klux Klan uniform. He was (of course) indignant that he and his fellow protesters were subjected to a search while hijab-wearing Muslim women were not.

The protest was in response to the partial revocation of a partial burqa ban by Australia’s legislature.

What’s interesting is that of the many face-concealing costumes this man could have worn, he opted for the Klu Klux Klan outfit. He chose to wear something attached to a lengthy legacy of hate, fear, and prejudice.

Perhaps, given the subject, his choice was more or less fitting.

The Klu Klux Klan is an American group that is dedicated to the preservation of America. White America.

So any group that is suspicious of and distrustful of minorities and sees their advances as a constant threat would likely appreciate the message of the KKK.

And this is why America needs to stop pretending that nobody sees its racism or is unaware of the LONG history of bigotry in this country.

The Klu Klux Klan isn’t the only symbol of inequality to travel.

The Hawley & Hazel Chemical Company sold a toothpaste named “Darkie” throughout Asia for a number of years. The box featured the grinning image of a white man in blackface. After much protest, “Darkie” became “Darlie” in 1989. It’s been noted that the new name is descriptive term for black people in China.

Blackface is a very real problem throughout Asia, much to the chagrin of much-offended travelers who happen to be black:

A variation of the always controversial Confederate flag was seen flying high at a Russian separatist movement. Why this flag? Mikhail Pavliv, credited with designing the flag for the “People’s Republic of Donetsk”, said that he stumbled across the flag online.

This is a flag that has been associated with American Southern pride and a desire to separate one’s self from tyrannical control.

It is also a flag that is flown proudly by members of the Klu Klux Klan and neo-nazi protesters both in the United States and in Ukraine.

What can Americans do about the ease at which hate groups abroad adopt shameful symbols of intolerance and ignorance? Unfortunately, not too much.

However, it SHOULD encourage all Americans to be more vocal about putting an end to racial prejudice and how persons who act out of hatred and ignorance represent themselves, and not America.

  • Paula Deen Targeted Over ‘Mammy’ Photo on Her Website

Poor Paula Deen can’t catch a break. She went through months of embarrassment and difficulty over some alleged comments that some viewed as racist toward black people. She lost book deals, endorsements, her cooking show, and loads of fair-weather fans.

Since then, Deen has worked hard to claw her way back up the ladder. She started a new subscription-based show. She launched a touring show that combines comedy with cooking.

But now Deen is being accused of racism again.

Deen’s website for her restaurant The Lady and Sons recently featured a photo of a black woman in an apron emblazoned with Deen’s signature “Hey Y’all” catchphrase ringing a dinner bell triangle.

The picture was meant to be part of an announcement for the restaurant’s new hours. But the owner of a Facebook group called “For Black Women ONLY” took issue with the picture. She posted the image, as well as the following commentary.

BLACK WOMEN: we have to LET MAMMY DIE.

This ad for Paula Deen’s restaurant evokes images of slavery when our women ancestors would cook for their masters and ring a bell (similar to this one) to alert the family that their meal was ready. Paula Deen longs for the antebellum south when Blacks, especially black women were non-threatening servants

Well, my sisters, Paula isn’t the only one. There are tons of folks out there who long for black women to stay like servile team mascots, non-threatening, putting up with second class citizen status as long as you make them a priority. Yeah, and some of these folks share Paula’s skin color (obvious) and some share your skin color (not so obvious to many of you).

This is why the black women’s empowerment movement (all the supporting pages, channels and sites) are so important. It is CRUCIAL to maintain black women exclusive spaces to address our needs, our rights and to optimize our lives our way. In order to live our best lives possible we need to engage in self-care.

We need to put ourselves first and foremost always.
We need to be honest with ourselves and not be afraid to demand better for ourselves and anyone who comes into our lives.
We need to see ourselves as human beings, and as women and not just as soldiers, workhorses or melanated vaginas.

This means WE MUST KILL THE MAMMY ARCHETYPE, STEREOTYPES AND ALL ITS CHARACTERISTICS.
WE ARE NOT HERE TO SERVE OTHERS BUT TO LIVE ON OUR OWN TERMS.
WE ARE NOT AT THE BOTTOM OF SOME TOTEM POLE OF HUMAN WORTH.

When asked about the picture, a spokesperson for Deen explained that the picture in question has been used on the website for five years. Furthermore “the lady featured in the picture has worked at the restaurant for over 17 years and is like family to the Deens.”

So far, the Facebook posting has only 139 Likes and 61 Shares, but it has apparently generated lots of controversy and discussion. The moderator recently posted in the thread:

“It took a few minutes but I cleaned up this thread. Who knew that posting a pic would bring out racist White Americans out of hiding on Facebook. Paula Deen has a fan club y’all!”

  • Dear White People: 3 Acts Of Casual Racism That You May Be Guilty Of Doing

Dear White People, the minimum requirement of black friends needed to not seem racist has been raised to two….Sorry, your ‘weed man’ Tyrone does not count!”

Just like that, the upcoming Dear White People movie moved into highly controversial territory.

The trailers (both standard and the recent red band) touch on scenarios that call out the casual racism still acted out in a supposedly “post-racial” America.

Although the statements and questions raised by the lead character Samantha White may seem outlandish to some white Americans, for far too many African Americans her rants represent everyday reality.

Here are some things called out in the trailers which, if you are doing them, are indeed racist.

    I Have Black Friends

Sam White informs us of a minimum number of black friends one must have to avoid being racist.

For those wondering, there’s no minimum.

It is possible to have never seen a black person in your life and STILL know that certain attitudes and behaviors are inherently wrong!

This is why some people must stop using their so-called “black friends” as a buffer against being called out for racist behavior.

Having black friends, black significant others, or even bi-racial children cannot make you magically stop being racist if this is behavior you’ve long internalized.

It’s not really a friendship if you’re content to have someone in order to use him or her as a sort of “Get Out of Jail Free” card.

    Can I Touch Your Hair?

Treating someone like an exotic animal because the texture of their hair “fascinates” you is racist.

It’s disturbing how many people think nothing of approaching a stranger or casual acquaintance and asking to touch their hair, as if they just stepped on Earth from another planet. That’s assuming permission is even asked.

For black people with afros, braids, or other unique hairstyles this is a common complaint.

Engaging In “Ghetto” and “Hood” Stereotypes

As character Lionel demonstrates, there is no right or wrong way to be black in America. Some people would assume that because he has a huge afro that he’s very “Afrocentric”.

(Note: An afro is not a political statement, it’s just the way someone’s hair grows out of their head. Someone having kinky hair is perfectly natural and not at all a fashion trend…)

Telling a person that they’re only “technically black” because they don’t adhere to black stereotypes is a form of casual racism.

As is dressing up “like ghetto black people” for parties and Halloween. You wouldn’t walk down the street dressed like Al Jolson. How is donning blackface while wearing FUBU, gold chains, and sagging pants with your hair in cornrow braids any less insulting?

Such behavior is integral to the plot of Dear White People, a movie that features a “ghetto-themed” party getting thrown on a mostly white college campus.

As writer Justin Simien pointed out, something like this actually happened. Sadly, this type of racially offensive behavior is still far too common.

Though Dear White People will bring the laughs, hopefully the blatant addressing of casually racist attitudes will provide movie goers with something to think about.

  • Dear White People: Too Controversial For Mainstream (White) Audiences?

Dear White People is one of the most perfectly timed movies in American history.

As Dear White People arrives in theaters, there will likely be protesting and riots in the streets of Missouri over two black teens fatally shot by police in recent months.

It will come at a time when some Americans ask themselves if their Ebola fears are secretly racist.

There’s also the questionable attitudes expressed by some citizens toward Barack Obama, the United State’s first non-white president.

Dear White People forces Americans to face an uncomfortable reality—Racism hasn’t gone anywhere.

You know this when discussions of existing bigotry in America are met with the claim that to talk about race or racism is to BE a racist.

This backward logic is hilariously called out in Dear White People, along with the assumption that “only Mexicans” experience racism. The Native Americans still fighting to get the Washington Redskins to change their name may have something to say about that.

As you will see in Dear White People, America is anything but over the topic of racism.

As long as racism continues to thrive in one form (overtly expressed bigotry) or another (cultural appropriation and negative stereotypes), it will NEVER be over.

This will definitely be a movie that provides food for thought, but will the people who need to see Dear White People even bother to do so?

Individuals who benefit from a certain form of privilege tend to flee discussions where they are forced to own it.

Some are already speculating that although the movie is called Dear White People, these persons may pass on the controversial movie altogether.

After all, “mainstream audience” is still silently synonymous with “mostly white audience” in America.

Will that fact doom this unique and promising film? Probably not.

There is a great deal of buzz surrounding this movie and it’s already stirred up a great deal of discussion and debate.

Regardless of how the movie performs, the ability to generate that kind of attention will make it hard to call it a failure.

Dear White People arrives in theaters October 17th.

  • Kailyn Lowry: Was Teen Mom Star’s “Hairstyle” Comment Racist?

Kailyn Lowry may be choosing her on-camera words more carefully in the future after one quote got her a tone of hate messages from viewers.

The Teen Mom 2 star found herself at the center of racist accusations following a remark she made during the season five finale.

Jo Rivera, the father of Lowry’s son Isaac, had cut his son’s hair in a manner that was disagreeable to the 22-year-old mother.

In a text message, Lowry argued that Isaac was “too young for that”.

Kailyn also remarked that “little white boys don’t get their hair cut like that” and that her son is “half-white”.

After the tirade aired, it had some viewers asking exactly how a haircut is appropriate or inappropriate for children based on race alone.

Over the past few days Kailyn has gone from laughing off the accusation to apologizing for offending viewers.

In a statement published by MTV, Lowry said that she was “deeply sorry for making those comments”.

“They were not representative of who I am. Diversity is something I value, especially in my own family.”

Husband Javi Marroquin stuck up for Kailyn Lowry, saying that the “statement came out wrong” and was taken “out of context”. He suggested that everyone angry at Lowry’s comments “move on” from the controversy.

The problem with this method of playing down the remarks made by Kailyn is that there’s probably never a right context for a comment like that.

The situation seems to highlight the difficulty some parents have fully accepting the other half of their biracial child’s ethnic makeup.

While Kailyn’s little boy may be partially white like herself, there is another half of his heritage that his birth father probably will have a say in. Not to mention young Isaac himself when he eventually comes of age.

This is something that Lowry will have to accept in time.

Hopefully with age will come wisdom and fewer foot-in-mouth situations regarding the racial and ethnic makeup of her son.

  • Boston Herald: Obama Cartoon Was Honest Mistake, Not Racist

Twitter has been aflutter over a cartoon that recently appeared in the Boston Herald, and the newspaper, as well as the cartoonist behind the controversial ‘funny’, have made apologies.

The cartoon, meant to poke fun at the recent Secret Service breach which saw an armed intruder make it wa(aaaaa)y too far into the White House, depicted said intruder sitting in Obama’s bathtub while the President brushes his teeth.

“Have you tried the new Watermelon flavored toothpaste?” asks the man.

The cartoon went viral (and not in the good way) soon after publication, as people pointed out that it played off a particularly prevalent racial stereotype involving African Americans and watermelon.

The cartoonist in question, Jerry Holbert, recently went on the record – apologizing to any and all who were offended.

“I want to apologize to anyone I offended who was hurt by the cartoon,” Holbert told Boston Herald Radio. “It was certainly, absolutely, not my intention … I was completely naive or innocent to any racial connotations. I wasn’t thinking along those lines at all.”

What was he thinking? Apparently, the idea to go with ‘watermelon’ as opposed to any other flavoring was sparked by his kids’ watermelon-flavored toothpaste.

The newspaper echoed Holbert’s insistence that the cartoon was in no way meant to offend.

“As Jerry Holbert discussed on Boston Herald Radio this morning, his cartoon satirizing the U.S. Secret Service breach at the White House has offended some people and to them we apologize. His choice of imagery was absolutely not meant to be hurtful. We stand by Jerry, who is a veteran cartoonist with the utmost integrity.”

Though the original version appeared in the Herald, an alternate version with “raspberry” instead of watermelon was drafted for syndication.

  • Hulk Hogan: Was There an Anti-Black Dress Code at Hogan’s Restaurant?

Hulk Hogan: Was There an Anti-Black Dress Code at Hogan’s Restaurant?

There has been another of those non-scandal scandals afoot in the tabloids lately. This one is about famed wrestler Hulk Hogan.

The story goes that the Hogan’s Beach restaurant in Tampa, Florida, has a dress code that discriminates against black people. A sign was posted at the restaurant that specified:

NO Plain White T-Shirts (or otherwise oversized T-Shirts extending past the mid-thigh)
NO Attire Containing Profanity (or otherwise deemed to be offensive by management)
    NO Sports or Sleeveless Jerseys
    NO Excessively Baggy Attire
NO Low Hanging Pants or Shorts (pants or shorts must be worn at the waist)
NO hats, caps or visors worn sideways or back facing (hats must be worn fully forward facing at all times)
NO Do-Rags, Skull Caps or Bandanas
    NO Torn or Soiled Clothing
    NO Workboots [sic]
    NO Oversized or Excessive Jewelry
NO Workout Clothing (including tracksuits, jumpsuits, sweatpants, basketball, gym or mesh shorts)
NO Camouflage (unless with military ID)
    NO High-Top Sneakers

Once news of this hit the Interwebs, the Hulkster himself had to make a phone call to fix the situation. This is the case, even though Hogan does not own the restaurant, he only licenses the use of his name for it.

But it turns out that this is not a dress code for the restaurant. The sign was up for a particular party at the restaurant that had a beach party theme. The party organizers who were paying to use the restaurant had listed the dress code rules.

“We do have promotions companies that come in and want a certain theme for their parties that they do present,” the Hogan’s Beach manager has said. “We actually don’t have a dress code here at Hogan’s Beach. That was for a specifically-themed beach party.”

In fact, at the bottom of that sign is the statement:

This is a beach party and beach attire is required.

If Paul Harvey were here, he would have an appropriate sign-off for this.

  • Etsy Bans ‘Redskins’ Items From Its Marketplace

Etsy Bans ‘Redskins’ Items From Its Marketplace

Even if you don’t follow football, it’s unlikely that you’ve not heard about the controversy surrounding the Washington Redskins and its name and mascot. It’s been controversial for years, but the argument has picked up major steam in recent months.

E-commerce marketplace Etsy just announced that it is no longer permitting sellers to list items with the name Redskins – a move that will no doubt stir up its own share of controversy.

Do you think Etsy is doing the right thing here? Share your thoughts in the comments.

The company points to two major catalysts that led to its decision. The first is this ad from the National Congress of American Indians:

“Native Americans call themselves many things,” it says. “The one thing they don’t…” Then it concludes with the image of a Washington Redskins football helmet and a football. It also includes the web address ChangeTheMascot.org.

The ad has been around since January, and is described on YouTube as the “#BigGame commercial the NFL would never air.” It has over three million views. Here’s what the campaigns Twitter account has been saying:

The campaign ran a radio ad in the Houston area as the Redskins went to town to play the Texans in week one.

The Change the Washington Mascot Campaign labels itself a “civil rights and human rights effort,” and notes that, “Native American leaders and organizations, sports icons, school boards, city councils, state legislators, media organizations, civil rights groups, religious leaders, Members of Congress and the President of the United States have all said it is time for the Washington team to stop using a dictionary defined racial slur as its name.”

The Oxford Dictionary labels the word “a term of disparagement.”

Merriam-Webster cites it as “usually offensive.”

Google’s dictionary feature labels it “dated offensive,” and shows an interesting graph showing its frequency of use over time, with it peaking in the late 1800s.

The campaign shares a “fact sheet,” which includes points like: The U.S. Government Labels the R-Word A Racial Slur; The United Nations Says the Name is a Hurtful Reminder of Mistreatment; Social science research says the term has severe consequences; among others.

The second item Etsy points to is a decision by the US Patent and Trademark Office to cancel the team’s trademarks.

“Following this decision, an increasing number of public figures, politicians, schools, news publications, and private companies have spoken out in protest of the name and mascot,” says Bonnie Broeren, who manages Etsy’s policy team. “Like the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, we at Etsy find the opinion of the minority group itself to carry most weight in determining whether the mascot is disparaging. In no uncertain terms, Native American groups have consistently advocated and litigated that the term ‘redskin(s)’ is disparaging and damaging to Native Americans. Therefore, it will no longer be permitted in our marketplace.”

“We understand that fans wish to support their favorite football team, and we do not believe that fans who are attached to the mascot have any racist feeling or intent,” she adds. “We also understand that some fans view the name and mascot as an homage to Native Americans, and we do not doubt their noble intent, but the fact remains that Native Americans themselves find the term unacceptable.”

Etsy will continue to permit users to sell items that use the team’s colors and location, but not with the name or logo. The policy goes into effect immediately.

The company is contacting sellers who are affected by the policy change, and there’s a Help Center article with additional info here.

“Today we seek to balance two principles that are critically important to us: freedom of speech and protection from discrimination. Freedom of speech and expression is important to us because we are a community of artists, artisans, and curators of all backgrounds, aesthetics, and viewpoints. If you search our site, you will see a wide variety of items testifying to our diversity and our seemingly limitless creativity,” says Broeren. “This freedom, however, is not without limits. In the past, we have taken actions to protect our community and to preserve our integrity as both a creative and an ethical space. We want Etsy to be safe, welcoming, and respectful for everyone, including artists, women, and minorities. For this reason, it has long been against our policies to allow content on our site that demeans people based upon race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, disability, or sexual orientation.”

In the past, Etsy has apologized for enabling sellers to list t-shirts promoting rape and updated its policy on prohibited animal products to include restrictions for fur, pelts, ivory, teeth, bones, and taxidermy.

Etsy is already taking some flack for continuing to offer various items.

Etsy also currently offers an “Al Jolsen Vintage Promotional photo 8 x 10 Picture Blackface Persona“:

The Washington Post is pointing to a poll from ESPN’s Outside The Lines finding that 71% of Americans surveyed think the Redskins should keep their name, though as ESPN notes, those who think it should be changed rose nine percentage points within the last year. ESPN’s NFL Nation also polled 286 NFL players, and found that 58% say the name should not be changed, while 42% say it should.

“The polling conducted for “Outside the Lines” showed no difference in attitude between men and women, or whites and non-whites,” Bob Ley wrote on ESPN’s website.

It will be interesting to see if any of Etsy’s rivals follow its policy approach or take advantage of gaining new sellers who leave the service.

As of the time of this writing, there are still a number of items listed on Etsy, which use the name and/or logo.

Presumably stuff like this would still be acceptable under Etsy’s new policy:

  • Obama “Ni**er” Headline Stuns Nation

    Obama “Ni**er” Headline Stuns Nation

Disclaimer: Ordinarily, whenever a word as offensive to many as this one is used in a story, it gets redacted, replaced. But this story is about the very use of the word in a headline. We beg your indulgence as we report the facts, understanding the sensitivities that many have toward the term.

The WestView News, a paper in New York that calls itself “The Voice of the West Village” has run an article called:

The Nigger in the White House

The article was written by James Lincoln Collier, and it is an anti-racism piece. Collier is an Obama supporter.

Regardless of the intent of the writer and his editor, press everywhere has been calling for Collier’s head on a platter.

It is never okay to use the n-word in a headline. It doesn’t matter if the article is pro or anti-Obama. It is disrespectful to the President Of The United States as a man and disrespectful to the office that he has been elected twice to hold. It was not in any way an appropriate headline. In fact, it is headlines such as this that give the people who hate Obama because of the color of his skin something to point to when they get called out for their bigotry.

The paper’s publisher, George Capsis, defends the headline, saying, “In this article, however, Jim [collier] reminded me that The New York Times avoids using the word, which convinced me that WestView should. He wanted to use the word to shock us into accepting that there are people who believe and use this outrageous word,”

The paper has a distribution of 20,000.

Directly below that story ran another, penned by an African-American columnist, entitled “The Headline Offends Me.”

“The decision to use the headline feels misguided to me,” Alvin Hall writes. “I don’t see how its use benefits anyone, but I do feel all too clearly how it deeply offends me.”

  • Justin Bieber Caught Telling Yet Another N-Word Joke

Justin Bieber seems to be making headlines for the wrong reasons…again. Another video of Bieber has surfaced, and this time, he is shown singing a parody of his own song entitled “One Less Lonely Girl.”

In the video, Bieber sang about the KKK. He replaced the lyrics of his song, and sang, “If I kill you/ I’ll be part of the KKK. There’ll be one less lonely n****.” The video was said to be taken when The Biebs was just 14 years old.

“There’ll Be One Less Lonely N—–” By Justin Bieber

According to reports, the video has already been viewed 203 million times on YouTube. Just this week, another video came out with Bieber telling a racist joke. Bieber apologized and said, “I’m very sorry. I take all my friendships with people of all cultures very seriously and I apologize for offending or hurting anyone with my childish and inexcusable behavior.”

In his statement, Bieber also said that at the time the video was taken, he didn’t realize that what he said wasn’t funny and that his actions were signs of ignorance. “Now that these mistakes from the past have become public I need to apologize again to all of those who I have offended.”

In this video, Justin Bieber tells us why black people are afraid of chainsaws.

Bieber’s camp told TMZ that the Bieber wanted the video out in the public “because he wants to own what he did.”

Bieber also claimed that people have been trying to extort him over videos that have been recently leaked. He stands firm and says that he will not be shaken and he wants people to see the videos, so that he can accept responsibility for his actions.

Ever since the videos leaked, Bieber has been facing backlash from his fans. A source close to TMZ said, “People need to see this. Normal kids in society do not make these kind of jokes. He is protected by a network of staff, but the camera doesn’t lie.”

  • Congrats, Racist Stripper, You’re About to Be a YouTube Star!

There are plenty of disturbing things about the video you’re about to watch. The most obvious and shocking is the blatant racism on display, and the casual nature at which the woman in the video, clearly very upset, slings the word “n*gger” like it’s nothing.

There’s also the issue of the passerbys to consider–most of which decide that they aren’t going to touch this situation with a 39 and a half-foot pole. That’s fair, I guess–she be crazy. But you’d imagine that at least one person would stop and ask her to “chill the f*ck” out or something. Especially…

…in front of her kids. This is probably the worst part of the whole video, which YouTube user IAMOYAB says was taken on May 30th.

“This happened to me last Friday May 30th 2014. I’m more upset that it was done in front of her children. They will have hate and have no idea where it came from,” he says.

    Well said.

Of course, it’s also a painfully funny video in a way. Pay close attention to how she uses her profession (or former profession, who knows) to assert dominance in the “argument.”

Clearly a class act. Lucky for her, millions of people are likely to see her classiness in action, as this video has climbed to the tip top of reddit and is racking up views.

    Congrats on your newfound fame!
