John Boyega and his costar Daisy Ridley walked the red carpet in Shanghai, China on Sunday for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere. Director J.J. Abrams joined the actors.

Looking dashing in his maroon suit with satin lapels, John Boyega plays the role of Finn in the new Star Wars film. The handsome 23-year-old no doubt loved walking the red carpet alongside his beautiful costar Daisy Ridley, who wore a deep purple Jason Wu sleeveless gown. Ridley, who plays the role of Rey in the new film, accented her look with Meira T jewelry and a Tyler Alexandra clutch. She paired her gown with sexy Jimmy Choo shoes.

Both John Boyega and Daisy Ridley posed on the red carpet with a new Star Wars icon, a roly-poly droid called BB-8, as well as the classic robot R2-D2.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, starring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and more boasts the biggest Christmas film opening ever, and in the days after Christmas has officially hit the $1 billion mark.

  • Darth Vader Uses ‘The Force’ to Take Selfie

Darth Vader has taken a selfie. Whether “the force” was used to take the actual selfie remains to be seen; however, fans have clearly been enthusiastic about the photograph that included the following caption, “Another day at the office.” Though the photograph was uploaded only a day ago, 36,700 have already liked the picture. This selfie may ultimately be rated as the best in history.

The Star Wars Official Instagram, (where the selfie was uploaded) just opened on December 2, 2013. The social media site already has 121,348 followers, which is something of a track record as these sites go, since this specific Instagram account has only be open for about 24 hours. The account opened with a fitting message, proclaiming, “It is useless to resist.”

However, not all fans are as taken by the recent surge of publicity and adaptation to the realm of social media.

Lucasfilm has recently been in the process of preparing a production hub located in UK’s Pinewood in anticipation for the filming of Star Wars: Episode VII, which has currently been slated for some time next year. The movie, which is being directed by J.J. Abrams, is not set for a release until December 18, 2015. While there is still quite some time to wait before the movie is released, fans have been recently privy to the revelation that R2-D2 will appear in the film.

In the meantime, fans have been treated to seeing Darth Vader pop up at some rather unofficial and unconventional places.

  • Another Star Wars Petition Hits White House Site, This Time Calling for National R2-D2 Day

Over the half year or so that the White House has been operating their We The People online petition site, we’ve seen that it can be used in a variety of ways.

There are the ridiculous petitions – the ones that have absolutely no basis in reality but I’m sure some people think they do. This would include the ones designed to have the Obama administration deport talk show hosts and let states secede because they’re unhappy about election results.

Then there are the meaningful petitions that deserve White House responses. This would include recent petitions like the one asking the Obama Administration to make cellphone unlocking legal or this anti-CISPA one.

Then, of course, there are the Stars Wars-related petitions. For a cultural phenomenon as powerful as Star Wars, it’s actually hard to believe that there aren’t more like this. You may remember the people’s attempt to get the U.S. government to build a fully functioning Death Star. It actually succeed, crossing the signature threshold and forcing an official White House response. But alas, the White House said that they do not support blowing up planets.

Today’s Star Wars-related governmental petition is a little more reasonable. It asks the Obama administration to “Create a national R2-D2 Day whose motto is ‘selfless not selfish’ and commemorates under appreciated heroes.”

    Cute.

Here’s what creator S.M. from Alexandria, Virginia, has to say.

In the iconic Star Wars saga, R2-D2 always seems to save the day, getting his Jedi masters and the forces of the Republic out of harm’s way, and doing so with grace and humor. But the astromech droid never gets the full credit or honors he deserves for his deeds.

In that sense, R2 is a stand-in for all of the under appreciated and unheralded heroes in our everyday lives — in our workplaces, schools and communities.

We should all join together on a national holiday to pay homage to those who, like R2, live by the “selfless, not selfish” creed.

America sure does have some under-appreciated heroes. Sounds like a good idea to me.

  • Open Source Computing Brings Everybody’s Favorite Droid To Life

I think we can all agree that R2-D2 is one of the most lovable robots ever created. Compared to his more terrifying contemporaries, the little guy just oozes charm. Now one man has made his very own R2-D2 using a Raspberry Pi linux computer.

A Chinese Star Wars fan took an old R2-D2 interactive toy and outfitted it with a Raspberry Pi and some other enhancements. The result is a fully interactive R2-D2 unit that can understand both English and Chinese. It also has face recognition, motion detection, ultrasonic distance detection and Wi-Fi. Check it out:

The best part about all of this is that the Droid is a gift for the creator’s girlfriend. She must be the luckiest lady alive to have somebody put this much work into a present. I know a few Star Wars fans that would kill to have a working R2 unit.

It’s also a major win for the Raspberry Pi community as its one of the most impressive projects yet accomplished with the open source computer. As more people begin to work with the tiny computer, we’ll start seeing really cool projects like this one.
