  • Camille Cosby: Did Bill Ever Offer Her Quaaludes?

Camille Cosby has remained mostly silent in the months that her husband has been under suspicion and accusation of drugging and raping women. The Cosbys have let their attorneys do most of the talking on the matter.

Camille Cosby has been portrayed as a major driving force behind her husband’s success, and does serve as his manager. Tabloid reports based on unnamed “inside sources” say that Camille Cosby is not willing to let her husband’s reputation and career go down without a fight. They say she is circling the wagons, consulting with managers and attorneys about how to handle the scandal that threatens to derail Bill Cosby’s legacy permanently.

“The man I met, and fell in love with, and whom I continue to love, is the man you all knew through his work,” Camille Cosby has assured the public. “He is a kind man, a generous man, a funny man, and a wonderful husband, father and friend. He is the man you thought you knew.”

Ever since her statement that included those words above, Camille Cosby has been silent, as has Bill. That silence, and the weight of so many women now coming forward to accuse Bill Cosby, has left onlookers to dig around for other clues, especially from the past.

The recently-released deposition excerpts are one such clue. Cosby’s legal team fought hard to keep that deposition sealed as part of a confidentiality agreement between Cosby and Andrea Constand, with whom he settled a civil suit. Constand argued that Cosby’s comments in the deposition should be released. When they were, the media and the public were shocked to learn that Bill Cosby had admitted to cheating, admitted to paying to keep affairs quiet, admitted to hiding them from his wife, and — most curiously — admitted to using Quaaludes for sex with other women.

Camille Cosby, so Bill says in the deposition, was intentionally kept in the dark about all this. He would tell her he was helping someone out with her education, when in fact he admitted he was buying her silence after having had sex with her.

Cosby’s attorneys now argue that his admission of using Quaaludes is in no way an admission to drugging women. Indeed, Cosby was asked about that at the time of the deposition, and was instructed by his attorneys to not answer. The lawyers pointed out many had used Quaaludes in the 70s for consensual sex. They said Cosby was one of those people.

This line of argument does raise an interesting question:

Did Bill Cosby ever offer or suggest Quaaludes to Camille?

In one oddly-prescient scene in an episode of The Cosby Show, Cosby’s character Heathcliff Huxtable flirts with his on-screen wife, Clair, offering her an aphrodisiac barbecue sauce. Clair is often said to be based on Camille Cosby.

If Camille Cosby were to say publicly that she and Bill had used Quaaludes recreationally for consensual sex, might that color the opinion of those who have seen that deposition as damning?

Camille Cosby has said that her greatest embarrassment over a cheating scandal Bill was embroiled in back in 1997 was that the public found out.

“It was embarrassing in terms of it being an invasion of our private lives,” Camille told Oprah. “That was something very personal, between the two of us… I already knew, but it wasn’t for the whole world to know.”

Whether she is willing to say much of anything about all this, especially if it requires any more personal revelations, remains to be seen.

  • Bill Cosby Fights Back About Quaaludes [Video]

Bill Cosby has kept his mouth shut about the scandal that threatens to bring his reputation and business crashing down. His wife has also been silent, leaving onlookers to wonder at the thoughts and motives of both. The most direct news that had come out for a while was from the mouths of unnamed “inside sources” who have lots to say, but nothing to prove.

Then came the deposition. Not a new deposition, mind you, but an older one from the complaints brought by Andrea Constand. Bill Cosby’s replies to the questions in that deposition were sealed by a judge as part of the confidentiality agreement the two parties reached in 2006.

But Constand, who had honored the confidentiality agreement so far, made a motion to a judge to release portions of that deposition anyway, insisting that Bill Cosby had violated the agreement himself by smearing her name in the press in an effort to defend himself against the recent scandal.

“But for Cosby’s repeated violations of the confidentiality agreement and attempt to sway public opinion in his favor this motion would not have been necessary,” Constand’s lawyer wrote.

“The release of these documents will assist other women who have been victimized and bring awareness to the fact that sexual assault is not just committed with a gun or knife but is also committed by mentors who engage in exploitative behaviors.”

The portions of that deposition that the judge agreed to release have dealt a blow to Bill Cosby’s reputation. One of the things that came to light was that Bill Cosby admitted to procuring Quaaludes for purposes of sex with other women. He did not admit to using the Quaaludes to drug women into non-consensual sex, but he was asked about that. The record indicates that Cosby declined to answer that question on the advice of his attorney.

But the cat was out of the bag in the press. The headline that ‘Bill Cosby Admits He Used Drugs For Sex’ was splashed everywhere. Few would read far enough beyond that to see that he had not actually admitted to drugging women and raping them.

Add to that the revelation in the deposition that Cosby had taken steps to hide his affairs from his wife, and the damage was inevitable.

Bill Cosby had sex with women besides his wife. He had procured Quaaludes for that purpose. And he had hidden it from his wife, including paying hush money.

The rest of the colors would not matter. Contrary to what Camille Cosby desperately wanted everyone to believe, Bill Cosby was certainly not “the man you thought you knew.”

Now Cosby’s lawyers have come out fighting. His lawyers have come to his aid in the past, putting a stop to an extortion attempt by another woman who may or may not have been his daughter. This time, they are going after the Quaaludes story.

“Quaaludes were a highly popular recreational drug in the 1970s, labeled in slang as ‘disco biscuits’ and known for their capacity to increase sexual arousal,” wrote one of Cosby’s attorneys.

“There are countless tales of celebrities, music stars, and wealthy socialites in the 1970s willingly using Quaaludes for recreational purposes and during consensual sex. Yet upon the unsealing of those excerpts, the media immediately pounced, inaccurately labeling the released testimony as defendant’s ‘confession’ of ‘drugging’ women and assaulting them,” Cosby’s attorney argued.

“Reading the media accounts, one would conclude the defendant has admitted to rape. And yet defendant admitted to nothing more than being one of the many people who introduced Quaaludes into their consensual sex life in the 1970s.”

Indeed, just last month, former Playboy playmate Holly Madison recounted an incident at the Playboy Mansion where she said Hugh Hefner offered her Quaaludes.

This passage is from her book Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny:

“‘Would you like a Quaalude?’ Hef asked, leaning toward me with a bunch of large horse pills in his hands, held together by a crumpled tissue,” Madison recounts. She turned the pills down.

“Hef did not miss a beat: ‘Okay, that’s good,’ he said, nonchalantly. ‘Usually, I don’t approve of drugs, but you know, in the ‘70s they used to call these pills thigh openers.’”

Cosby’s lawyers may have a point about how Quaaludes were popularly used, but they are likely trying to win a battle that will not turn the tide of the war, at least not in terms of public opinion. Public opinion does not hinge upon reasonable doubt. Bill Cosby’s reputation was based on all the times his family and others had insisted that he was Heathcliff Huxtable.

If Cliff and Clair wanted to joke about hitting the special barbecue sauce, that was one thing. But if Cliff had started making extra batches of sauce to take to other women, that would’ve been an entirely different show.

  • Judd Apatow Calls Out Cosby Holdouts After Quaaludes News

Judd Apatow has been outspoken about the mess Bill Cosby finds himself in lately. Many people have opinions about what is going on with Cosby, but Apatow says it’s time to stop questioning Cosby’s accusers. Time for benefit of the doubt has run out.

“I just kept noticing that no one else was saying that this was a bad thing,” said on the Today show. “I would have loved to not talk about it. It’s incredibly sad. It’s one of the most tragic things that’s happened in our business, and I think we do have to stand up for the women and say that we believe you.”

In America, we do have a rule of justice that a person is innocent until proven guilty, but many believe that the women who accuse Cosby of drugging and raping them have not been properly heard. Besides, there are so many of them from so far back who have very similar stories.

“We should all be very hesitant about getting involved in anything,” Judd Apatow said. “But when it’s 40 people [making accusations], it certainly is time for everybody to wake up and say we should be concerned about the women.”

When revelations hit last week that Bill Cosby had admitted to procuring Quaaludes for women he intended to have sex with, Judd Apatow had heard enough.

“A lot of people got terribly hurt,” Apatow said. “And you know, when you go out on a date you don’t need seven prescriptions for Quaaludes. I’m in show business. Famous people can meet women without the enormous prescriptions.”

Bill Cosby’s wife Camille Cosby apparently does not like the line of reasoning Judd Apatow follows. According to sources claiming to be close to the Cosbys:

“Camille still doesn’t believe that Bill provided drugs and had sex with women without their consent. She’s well aware of his cheating, but she doesn’t believe that her husband is a rapist.”

These sources say Camille Cosby is not about to back down from supporting her husband.

Camille Cosby is “a proud, dignified but stubborn woman. You can say that she’s standing by her husband, but really, the more people stand against him, the more she perceives it as an affront to her and all that she’s done to make him a star,”

  • Kim Fowley Accused of Raping Runaway While Joan Jett Watched

Kim Fowley is dead. The man who managed the legendary all-girl rock group The Runaways died in January of this year following a battle with bladder cancer.

Now comes a story that is hard to read. It is a story that has the potential to haunt the memory of Kim Fowley and the legacy of The Runaways. In this age of information and communication, the evil that men do — or even may have done — indeed lives after them.

The story takes place in 1976. The Runaways lineup included future superstars Joan Jett and Lita Ford on guitar, with Cherie Currie on vocals, Sandy West on drums, and Jackie Fox on bass.

It is Jackie Fox (born Jackie Fuchs) who later told the tale of a night of horror with Kim Fowley.

The band was touring behind their debut album The Runaways at the time. Fowley would part ways with the band over money isues in 1977, but was reportedly very much around at the time.

Fuchs says she was given Quaaludes by a man she thinks was a roadie. Quaaludes have been referred to as “thigh openers.” They have been mentioned recently in allegations against Hugh Hefner and Bill Cosby.

The story goes on, as related to Huffington Post.

“At some point, Jackie says she had to lie down on a bed to rest. She was having trouble staying upright. When a roadie checked to see if she was OK, Fowley asked him if he was interested in having sex with her. ‘She doesn’t mind,’ Fowley said. ‘Do you?’

Jackie says she could not move.

“Jackie tried to protest, but she was frozen. ‘You don’t know what terror is until you realize something bad is about to happen to you and you can’t move a muscle,’ she says. ‘I can’t move. I can’t speak. All I can do is look him in the eye and do the best I can do to communicate: Please say no. … I don’t know what it looked like from the outside. But I know what was going on inside and it was horror.’”

When no one else stepped forward to have sex with the incapacitated Jackie, she says Kim Fowley himself took over.

“Fowley invited other guys to have sex with Jackie before removing his own pants and climbing on top of her.”

Other people were called in to watch.

“On the bed, Fowley played to the crowd, gnashing his teeth and growling like a dog as he raped Jackie. He got up at one point to strut around the room before returning to Jackie’s body.”

Jackie said she saw a friend in the room, who offered no help.

“’I remember opening my eyes, Kim Fowley was raping me, and there were people watching me,’ Jackie says. She looked out from the bed and noticed [Cherie] Currie and [Joan] Jett staring at her. She says this was her last memory of the night.”

Joan Jett has responded to the story, saying in a statement:

“Anyone who truly knows me understands that if I was aware of a friend or bandmate being violated, I would not stand by while it happened. For a group of young teenagers thrust into 70’s rock stardom there were relationships that were bizarre, but I was not aware of this incident.”

“Obviously Jackie’s story is extremely upsetting and although we haven’t spoken in decades, I wish her peace and healing.”

Kim Fowley’s widow, Kara Fowley, had no comment on the interview with Huffington Post.

Perhaps Kim Fowley is lucky, in a sense, that he is not alive to have to fight the allegations against him. Men like Bill Cosby and Joe Paterno probably never imagined that hey would have to fight such thing in their old age.

Then again, not being around to fight them may mean that they are left to stand as truth unopposed.

  • Camille Cosby Has Not Denied Charges Against Bill. Here’s What She Did Say.

Camille Cosby has remained silent in the wake of the release of court documents in which her husband Bill Cosby admits procuring drugs for women he intended to have sex with.

Camille Cosby has long stood behind her husband as he fought a very public and very embarrassing battle with as many as forty different women who have accused him of sexual misconduct. At this point, one would think Camille Cosby might at least have an opinion about Bill intending to have sex with other women, and buying Quaaludes for them, even if he never went through with it.

When the scandal first got huge last year, Camille Cosby said she believed her husband to be the victim of these accusations.

“None of us will ever want to be in the position of attacking a victim. But the question should be asked – who is the victim?”

After the release of those court documents, Judd Apatow was asked by Esquire Magazine for a response to the information. Apatow also called out Camille Cosby.

“I don’t think there is anything new here. It is only new to people who didn’t believe an enormous amount of women who stated clearly that he drugged them. We shouldn’t need Bill Cosby to admit it to believe forty people who were victimized by him. I am sure there are many victims who have not come forward. Maybe now more people in show business and all around our country will stand up and tell the people he attacked that we support you and believe you. I also hope Camille Cosby and Phylicia Rashad will now stand with the victims and not with their attacker.”

Perhaps now is a good time to review what Camille Cosby has said. In her statement, she never categorically denied that Bill Cosby did what he was accused of. She simply said he was “the man you thought you knew,” meaning the public.

She also said she does not know the man she has seen portrayed in the media for months. She also bemoaned that the alleged victims accusing Cosby had not been “vetted.”

In none of this does she deny. She just claims ignorance, bewilderment, and frustration. Here is her statement in full.

“The man I met, and fell in love with, and whom I continue to love, is the man you all knew through his work. He is a kind man, a generous man, a funny man, and a wonderful husband, father and friend. He is the man you thought you knew.

“A different man has been portrayed in the media over the last two months. It is the portrait of a man I do not know. It is also a portrait painted by individuals and organizations whom many in the media have given a pass. There appears to be no vetting of my husband’s accusers before stories are published or aired. An accusation is published, and immediately goes viral.

“None of us will ever want to be in the position of attacking a victim. But the question should be asked – who is the victim?”
