  • Here’s How Character Progression Works In The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls franchise has always had a unique take on character progression where player abilities leveled up with use. This system has been in use all the way up through the latest game – Skyrim – but some fans may be concerned that Zenimax Online would take a different approach with the franchise’s first foray into MMOs.

In the latest trailer for The Elder Scrolls Online, the developers at Zenimax Online discuss just how character progression works in their first MMO. The good news is that they do keep some of the use-based skill progression from the mainline Elder Scrolls games, but now there is a heavy dependence on experience when leveling up. To clarify, all players will gain experience upon defeating enemies, exploring the world and completing quests. Upon leveling up, you will gain points that can be spent on both stats and skills.

It’s all pretty standard MMO fair so far, but the skills is where The Elder Scrolls Online becomes more like a traditional Elder Scrolls game. Every player starts out with only a basic skill, but will unlock new skills along its skill tree as they use it more. Players will gain access to specific skill trees based upon their race and class, but they will also gain access to new skill trees based upon a player’s progression through the story. For example, you can gain new skill trees by becoming a werewolf or vampire.

You can see all the above and more in action in the trailer below:

The Elder Scrolls Online is slated to release in 2014 on PC, Xbox One and PS4.

  • Looks Like Europe Had A Blast With Its PS4 Launch

On November 29, Sony launched the PS4 in 13 additional countries across Europe and Oceania after launching the console in North America on November 15. While Sony certainly had plenty of launch events for its fans in the US and Canada, it looks like Europe had the better parties.

PlayStation Europe shared a new video today featuring all the different launch events it held across Europe last Friday. The UK features prominently as the PS4 has enjoyed the best console launch in the nation’s history there. Other big launches featured prominently in the video are those in Germany and Rome where Sony seems to have gone all out for some of the festivities, including a digital “Berlin wall” that was demolished at launch.

Check out the below video to see all the launch festivities up close:

While Sony hasn’t been able to match the lengths that Microsoft went to during its global launch of the Xbox One, it will probably have the best launch event in Japan. After all, it’s hard to believe Microsoft will put much effort into its Asian launch after the territory ignored both the Xbox and Xbox 360.

The PS4 will launch in Japan on February 22 while the Xbox One will launch in the region sometime in 2014. While launch events in Japan are normally not that big, especially when compared to events in the West; you can expect to see Sony and Microsoft both doing something. At that time, we’ll be able to do one final comparison to see who truly won the console launch wars.

  • PlayStation 4 Sales Hit 2.1 Million

PlayStation 4 Sales Hit 2.1 Million

Two and a half weeks on from its debut in North America, the PlayStation 4 has now sold through to over 2.1 million customers worldwide. The announcement was made today over on the PlayStation blog by Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House.

This new figure more than doubles the one million PlayStation 4 consoles that Sony announced it had sold on its November 15 launch date. The new console has now launched in 32 countries around the world, with Europe and Latin America having been added just this past weekend. Estimates placed sales of the PS4 at 250,000 in the UK alone.

House used the announcement to thank gamers and emphasize that he and Sony have committed to making the PlayStation4 “the best place to play.” From the announcement:

It’s an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry, and we couldn’t have done it without you. I want to personally thank PlayStation fans, both old and new, for your vote of confidence. The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun. In addition to an incredible lineup of PS4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead.

Sony’s new sales announcement will undoubtedly add fuel to console war arguments in the weeks to come. Microsoft was able to match Sony’s day-one sales with one million Xbox One sales of its own in 13 separate launch markets. Sony is now on-track to sell over 3 million PlayStation 4s during its first month of availability – an impressive manufacturing feat more than anything else. A similar sales announcement from Microsoft next week will mean that the Xbox One is keeping pace with PS4 sales and that another generation of highly competitive consoles is coming. The lack of an announcement from Microsoft could also hint at the opposite.

  • PS4 Sells 250K In The UK Over The Weekend

PS4 Sells 250K In The UK Over The Weekend

While gamers in the U.S. have been enjoying the PS4 since November 15, our friends across the pond had to wait until November 29 to get their hands on Sony’s latest hardware. It seems that the wait didn’t discourage anybody from picking up the console, however, as it’s already smashing records.

MCV reports that early estimates put PS4 sales in the UK at 250,000 units over the last weekend. In other words, the PS4 is the fastest selling console in UK history. It even beat out last week’s launch of the Xbox One which managed to sell a respectable 150,000 units in the UK.

To further put this into perspective, the PS4 and Xbox One have already outsold the Wii U in the UK. Nintendo’s console has struggled in the territory as some retailers have even pulled the console from their shelves. Unless something catastrophic happens, it looks like the PS4 and Xbox One will have no such problems.

With the US and UK console launches out of the way, we can now set our sights on the Japanese launch for both consoles. The region has traditionally favored the PlayStation and Nintendo brands while the Xbox 360 has only catered to hardcore otaku and Western game fans in the region. It’s not known at this point if Microsoft will try to win over the Japanese audience again like it did in the formative years of the Xbox 360, but the company has repeatedly stated that it still views Japan as an important market.

That being said, the Japanese game market is shrinking. As more players in the country move to mobile devices, it will be harder for game consoles to do business in the country. Of course, a major release in the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest or Monster Hunter franchises could serve to bring Japanese gamers to next-gen consoles in a big way.

Sony will find out if its Japanese launch will repeat its North American and European successes on February 29. As for the Xbox One, all Microsoft is saying is that it will launch in the region in 2014.

  • Xbox Games: Free at a Cost For Those With Defective Consoles

While many are enjoying their brand new Xbox One with all its bells and whistles, some are having mixed feelings about their faulty gifts and Microsoft’s solution.

In the past week it has become extremely clear that a fair share of Xbox One owners are not having the fun time they were expecting. Microsoft has been scrambling to solve the disc drive issues along with other hardware errors that their consumers are having and are sending out new consoles and free video games to their Advanced Exchange Policy holders. They have been giving their customers many avenues to address their defect issues, however some are being met with a road block while others cannot be more satisfied with their solution.

Even though some customers will get their choice of either Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome, or Zoo Tycoon while waiting for their new system, customers are complaining about the $500 deposit they have to give for the ability to play one game while they wait, and those who are not part of the Advance Exchange Policy membership, are mad about it all including ‘defective’ consoles issues other than the disc not reading properly.

Comments from ‘Xbox One Owners With Hardware Issues Get Complimentary Game’ article on Polygon.com

But even with the Xbox One gaining recognition for its defectiveness, it seems not to effect the supply and demand of the console with the system still climbing the charts after its over one million sales on Black Friday alone according to Venture Beat.
For Microsoft’s’ sake, there are consumers that are dealing with problematic consoles, however are delighted with the solution Microsoft has given their consumers helping them keep on track with the PS4 release.

Comments Courtesy of GameSpot.com article ‘Broken Xbox One? Microsoft will give you a free game’

Like most new tech releases, there will always be kinks. It’s almost inevitable as well as the ambiguous satisfaction of consumers effected by defects.

  • PS4 Games- What’s On Sale and What’s Worth Waiting For?

The PS4 is one of the hot electronics and gaming consoles available this Black Friday and throughout the rest of the holiday shopping season. There are some great prices on bundle packs that include a couple of games and some accessories, or you can just buy the console itself for a lower price. One of the things that is on every PS4 gamers mind is what games will be available for the PS4.

If you don’t want to wait until Black Friday to start shopping for PS4 games, then check out some of the ones that are already on sale at discounted prices. Many stores are already offering their Black Friday deals online and you can scoop up some great game titles now, and not have to worry about fighting the crowd for them the day after Thanksgiving.

Amazon is offering two PS4 games titles at low prices, the new Call of Duty: Ghosts for $49 and Need for Speed Rivals, also for $49. There are also a few other titles for the PS4 on sale at Amazon. Walmart will price match these items as well, so if you do not want to shop online, you can always visit a local Walmart store. Game Stop will also offer several PS4 titles on sale on Black Friday, with prices starting at $49 and up.

If you can’t find a lot of games you like for your PS4 on Black Friday, don’t worry there will be many more released in the near future that are worth waiting for, even if you do have to pay full price. Titles such as Infamous: Second Son, Thief and Watch Dogs are rumored to be some of the best games that will be available for the PS4, once they are released.

  • Here’s How Sony Made That Excellent PS4 Launch Ad

Before the PS4 came out in the US on November 15, Sony began running an ad about two gamers’ perfect day in the world of PlayStation featuring nods to The Elder Scrolls Online, DriveClub and Killzone: Shadow Fall. While it’s a decent ad, it can’t hold a candle to the ad Sony’s European branch put together for the PS4’s launch in Europe on November 29.

For those interesting in the creative process that goes behind game ads, Sony has put together a little making of video that details how they went about creating the European PS4 launch ad. According to the producers, the ad was all about transporting the player to the world of PlayStation. If you’ve seen the full ad, you know that they accomplished this right from the start with overt references to Street Fighter, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, inFamous: Second Son and Killzone: Shadow Fall.

Interestingly enough, the production studio also snuck in little references to PlayStation’s past throughout the entire ad. For instance, there’s a sign that features a silhouette of Crash Bandicoot. This sign alone set off a number of theories that Sony had bought the rights to Crash Bandicoot back from Activision, but it looks like this was merely a reference to the company’s past. Other notable references include a sign pointing in the direction of Silent Hill and a garage door with PaRappa the Rapper on it.

Video game ads may be nothing but marketing, but gamers tend to reserve a special place in their heart for the very best ads, like Nintendo’s “Now you’re playing with power” campaign or Sega’s “Genesis does what Nintendon’t” campaign. Sony looks to have its “4ThePlayers” campaign join the same group of highly regarded ads that cease to be marketing and become an integral part of the gaming community’s shared culture.

  • Sony Resetting Some PSN Passwords After Detecting “Irregular Activity”

It’s been two years now since the PSN was down for a month following an attack orchestrated by members of Anonymous. Since then, Sony has done everything in its power to protect its infrastructure and the accounts that reside on it. That sometimes includes resetting passwords without telling anybody about it until after the fact.

Some PSN users tried to login to their accounts yesterday to find that their password was no longer valid. The prevailing theory was that accounts were hacked, but Sony says that was not the case. In a post on the official PlayStation forums, the company said that this was merely a precautionary measure after detecting “irregular activity.”

We monitor PSN account for any irregular activity. If such activity is detected we will sometimes reset passwords.

This was done purely as precautionary measure and there was no specific evidence that any accounts had been compromised.

Only a small number of users were affected by this and as I said this was precautionary so there is nothing specific to worry about.

I can’t provide any further details as this would affect out ability to keep you guys safe.

It’s unfortunate that Sony can’t provide further details because it would be interesting to see what Sony counts as “irregular activity.” If no accounts were compromised, what’s the purpose behind resetting passwords? It’s also more than a little troublesome that Sony reset the passwords first and then told people about it after complaints started to appear.

While it’s good that no PSN accounts were compromised, Sony apparently still hasn’t learned a thing about communication since the 2011 hack. At that time, it took Sony several days after the initial hack to acknowledge that their systems had been compromised and it took even longer for them to announce that some customer information may have been stolen.

All of this is to say that Sony needs to announce these kind of things beforehand. If they’re going to reset passwords, they should be upfront and transparent about it. Pretty much every other tech company will tell their users if they had to reset their passwords right as soon as it happens. Waiting until people start complaining doesn’t inspire confidence and will give people terrible flashbacks to 2011.

On a final note, if you had your password reset and don’t know how to update it, check out the link in the below tweet:

  • Xbox One Has Its Fair Share Of Problems At Launch

The Xbox One, like any new piece of hardware, is going to have some issues at launch. It’s an unfortunate, and unavoidable, truth – a truth that Sony learned last week at the PS4 launch. Now that the Xbox One is out, some users are reporting a few issues of their own.

Kotaku reports that some Xbox One consoles shipped with broken disc drives. Before you freak out, you should know that only a small number of consoles seem to be affected by this issue. It doesn’t make it any less jarring, however, when you see videos of the broken disc drives.

Be forewarned, the sound these disc drives make comes straight from the bowels of hell. It’s a little unsettling to say the least.

    Here’s another:

It bears repeating that this seems to only be affecting a small number of launch consoles and it’s not a widespread problem like the infamous Red Ring that affected thousands of Xbox 360s.

Aside from hardware issues, the Xbox One seems to be having some software issues as well. According to CinemaBlend, some Xbox One users have reported that their consoles are unable to connect to the Internet to download the required day one update. Without the update, the Xbox One is just a paperweight, unable to even play games. The good news is that at least one of these consoles seems to have fixed itself, but others have not been so lucky.

Now, before you go prancing through the proverbial streets on GameFAQs or Reddit proclaiming another console’s superiority based solely on launch day woes, it’s important to remember that these things happen. No product launch is perfect and the manufacturing process is going to let a few duds through quality control. That doesn’t mean one is better than the other. It just means that manufacturing millions of game consoles in the span of a few months is hard and that mistakes will happen.

The best thing you can do now is grieve with your fellow gamers that had a console show up dead, and maybe play some Super Mario 3D World together while they wait for a “coffin” to arrive from Microsoft or Sony.

  • Sony Is Planning a PS4/Vita Bundle For This Year

Back in October, Sony was asked whether or not it would consider bundling the PS4 with the PS Vita. After all, remote play is a big selling point for the Vita and the company could use its new home console to sell more handhelds. At the time, Sony wasn’t committed to the idea just yet, but a lot can change in a month.

MCV reports that Sony is now planning to launch what it calls the PS4 Ultimate Bundle in the UK this year. The bundle will pack in a PS4 and a PS Vita into the same box. Unfortunately, there’s no price for the bundle just yet, but you can expect it to be a bit cheaper than what you’d pay if you bought both the console and handheld separately.

The bundle isn’t the only thing that Sony has planned for the Vita this year. It’s also being reported that Sony is launching a £2.5 million ad campaign for the Vita called “The Best Way to Play.” The ad campaign will tout the Vita’s ability to play PS4 games via Remote Play as well as upcoming PS Vita title Tearaway.

Will this latest initiative help sell Vitas? It’s hard to say, but it certainly can’t hurt. The Vita is a handheld for the hardcore Sony fan and those buying PS4s this holiday season are certainly that. By bundling the two together, Sony can finally get Vitas into the hands of those who would get the most out of it. Getting more Vitas into the hands of more gamers will also help Sony get more content for the system, like the recently announced Borderlands 2 port for the handheld. With an even larger install base, we should start seeing more third party and indie support for the handheld.

With all that being said, the big question now is whether or not Sony will release a PS4/Vita bundle in America. At the time, the bundle appears to be exclusive to the UK, but never say never. Don’t get your hopes up either though as American branches of companies are never as big on bundles as their European branches are.

  • PS4 Gets Its First Post-Launch Update Tonight

When you got your shiny new PS4 last Friday, you were prompted to download system software version 1.50. This day one update enabled many of the features that Sony promised would be available at launch, such as game streaming on Twitch and Blu-ray playback. Now a second software patch is already on the way, but it’s decidedly less impressive.

Sony announced this morning that an update will hit the PS4 today that upgrades the console’s system software to version 1.51. As the number indicates, it’s a minor update that brings the usual system software stability and “minor refinements to elements of the system UI.”

What refinements can we hope to see with this update? Sony isn’t saying a lot at moment, but it does reveal that the system will now “clearly indicate when a user downloads a game and a game patch at the same time.” That’s definitely a nice little improvement as my day one download of Contrast told me that I was downloading the game twice instead of alerting me that one of the downloads was merely a patch.

As for other features, like MP3 playback and DLNA support, those are presumably still coming at a later date. Sony has repeatedly said that it focused on the gaming side of things for launch and will update the console with more media capabilities over the next few months. Let’s hope the MP3 playback comes sooner rather than later then as many of us don’t want to pay for Music Unlimited just to listen to our own music while playing games like Need for Speed Rivals or Madden 25.

While we wait for upcoming updates with some heft, Sony says that you wont have to lift a finger to install the system software update 1.51. The PS4 will download it automatically as soon as it becomes available, even if the system is in standby mode. While we may never be free of Sony’s need to constantly release system updates, the PS4 at least makes the process more bearable.

  • IHS: PlayStation 4 Costs $381 To Make

Game console manufacturers are always in a precarious position at launch. The hardware will almost always be sold at a loss, and the platform holder must rely on software sales to make that money back. It was especially bad with the launch of the Xbox 360 and PS3, but it looks like Sony has reigned in its costs for this latest generation of consoles.

IHS reports in its latest teardown that the components that make up the PS4 only costs $372. When you factor in manufacturing costs, the total cost of the console jumps to $381. The console is sold for $399 at retail so you would assume that Sony is making money on each console sold. That’s not the case, however, as IHS points out a number of other costs will ensure that Sony takes a loss on each console sold at the outset. Fortunately for Sony, the low cost of the console also ensures that it will break even or even become profitable later down the line, unlike the PS3.

“This time, Sony is on a greatly shortened path to the hardware break-even point, or even profitability, with its cost-conscious PlayStation 4 design,” said Andrew Rassweiler, senior director, cost benchmarking services for IHS. “The company is pulling off this feat, despite offering a brand-new design that once again includes avant-garde components that yield superfast performance. The PlayStation 4 keeps a lid on costs by focusing all the additional expense on the processor and memory—and reducing outlays for the optical drive, the hard disk drive (HDD) and other subsystems.”

Interestingly enough, the teardown reveals that the PS4’s CPU and DRAM make up slightly more than half of the entire cost of the console at $188. In comparison, the PS3’s CPU and DRAM only made up 29 percent of the total cost of the console.

“Sony clearly has made the decision to focus on balancing the brains and economics of the console, with the processor and memory dominating both the design and the BOM,” said Jordan Selburn, senior principal analyst for consumer platforms at IHS. “This processor is a monster, with the surface area of the chip amounting to about 350 square millimeters. That is three times larger than any other chip manufactured using equivalent-process technology that has been examined by the IHS Teardown Analysis service. Despite the remarkable silicon acreage of this device, it comes at a price point attractive to mainstream consumers while delivering a very high level of performance. Future versions, manufactured with even more advanced semiconductor processing technology, will further enhance both cost and performance.”

Speaking of DRAM, IHS also notes that Sony’s use of GDDR5 RAM in the PS4 has led to the dramatic increase of cost of RAM compared to the PS3. Not only is Sony’s new console using 16 times the RAM of its predecessor, but it’s also using cutting edge technology compared to the DDR3 RAM that’s used in the Xbox 360, PS3 and Xbox One.

Despite these increase in costs for the CPU/GPU and RAM, IHS says that Sony was able to make a number of cost cutting measures in other parts of the console. For one, the Blu-ray drive in the PS4 only costs $28, compared to $66 in the PS3. Sony was also able to save money on the motherboard by “using a more integrated design” that reduced “the number of small-sized integrated circuits, discrete semiconductors and passive components.”

You can see a full breakdown of components below:

  • Xbox One More Anticipated Than PS4, According To Yahoo

Sony’s PS4 was released on Friday, and Microsoft’s Xbox One will be released exactly a week later. Obviously both consoles have been highly anticipated by gamers, and will compete for their dollars.

Yahoo shared some search trend data with us, looking at the popularity of these systems in terms of users’ queries.

“Yahoo users are heavily debating which system is better with [ps4 vs xbox one] spiking 200% this month on Yahoo,” Yahoo Web Trend Expert Lauren Whitehouse tells WebProNews. “Over the last 30 days on Yahoo, [playstation 4] and [xbox one] are searched an almost equal amount of the time, with a slight edge for [xbox one].”

“The [playstation 4] has a little more interest in women than the [xbox one] as they search for [playstation 4] 31% as opposed to [xbox one] 25% of the time,” she adds. “Also, Yahoo users have seemed more eager to pre-order the xbox one as [preorder xbox one] spiked 16380% on Yahoo this month.”

“Overall, it seems like the XBOX One is slightly more anticipated! [Nintendo 3ds] has been searched for over 12x less than the other two systems on over the last 30 days on Yahoo,” she notes.

Some other interesting search stats from the company:

  • Yahoo searches for [xbox one release date] are spiking 232% this month
  • Nearly half (45%) of searches on Yahoo for [xbox one] and for [playstation four] were from users aged 30-45.
  • Yahoo searches for [preorder ps4] spiked 2144% this month.
  • Yahoo searches for [xbox one games] spiked 3418% this month, while searches for [ps4 games] spiked just 189%.
  • Sony sold over a million PS4s on Friday. We’ll see soon enough how the Xbox’s first-day numbers stack up.

  • Sony Sold Over One Million PlayStation 4s On Friday

For months now gamers have been anticipating the launch of the PlayStation 4 and on Friday those same fans were finally able to get their hands on Sony’s new console. Sony’s confident marketing and lack of PlayStation-related scandals managed to make the PS4 highly desired among gamers, and the company this week has revealed just how that good will has translated into sales.

Sony has announced that it sold over one million PlayStation 4 consoles to customers on its launch day. Though this figure represents PS4 consoles sold just in North America, it represents the biggest console launch day in the history of the industry. The PS4 will be launching in dozens of other countries in the coming weeks, putting it on-track for the largest console launch month ever.

“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal,” said Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

Microsoft will now get its chance to match Sony’s feat with its launch of the Xbox One console this Friday. Unlike Sony, Microsoft’s marketing of the Xbox One this year has been plagued with bad press due to the company’s original plan to implement hardware-level DRM on the console, its targeting of a wider TV-friendly audience, and lower hardware specs coupled with a higher price when compared to the PS4. Though consumer backlash caused Microsoft to ditch its DRM plans, it remains to be seen whether these other factors will negatively affect the Xbox One at launch.

  • Dez Bryant Becomes Santa And Buys A PS4 For People In Line At Walmart

I bet every gamer wishes that they could have been in line after hearing this news. Dez Bryant stopped by a Walmart in Dallas on Thursday night, and rewarded those who had been waiting in line by buying them all a brand new PS4. While some people can claim to have bought the system brand new on its launch day, there are not many that will be able to say that Dez Bryant bought the system for them.

Dez Bryant is a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, and in a recent career move, it seems that he decided to become Santa Claus last night. People were lined up all over the country in anticipation of the release of the new PS4 system, but only those in Dallas were lucky enough to get theirs for free.

The PS4 was released, and hit the shelves of stores all across North America on Friday, and the consoles began selling at 12:01 a.m., with a retail price of $400.

Dez Bryant reportedly bought a copy of the system for himself as well, which was why he was at the store.

The news officially broke over twitter and Facebook, when people started posting about how they had their new system bought for them by the NFL star, and one person even posted his picture with Dez Bryant.

He came to the store to buy the system, and as a spur of the moment decision, he chose to reward several other shoppers who had been waiting in line for hours. Dez Bryant has also been labeled one of the bad boys of the NFL, and has been told to grow up, maybe this is his way of showing people that he wants to change?

The Cowboys receiver infamously threw a tantrum during their loss to the Lions during their game on October 27th.

Dez Bryant has bragged in the past about how he is the best player of Madden on the PlayStation in the world. He may have made some new friends after his big donation last night, and will be able to show off his skills with even more people.

  • PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 to Get Destiny Beta First

Though none of the announcements during last night’s big PlayStation 4 release event were huge revelations, they did all add up to a fairly substantial look at what is coming in the next few months for Sony’s new console.

Apart from the Uncharted tease and the Metal Gear Solid V exclusive mission announcement, Bungie may have had the biggest news of the night. The studio used the PS4 launch to announce that the beta for Destiny will launch first for PlayStation consoles.

The Destiny beta is currently set for an early 2014 release. Players who pre-order Destiny will gain automatic access to the beta when it launches. Though no details of the PlayStation timed exclusivity were revealed, it’s clear that PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 owners will be playing the game a week or a month earlier than Xbox One owners.

In addition to the announcement, Bungie revealed a bit more of Destiny through a new game trailer. The video shows off what appear to be robot enemies, a variety of large landscapes (including the moon), and a special message of congratulations from Bungie to Sony and PlayStation fans:

  • PlayStation 4 Out Today; Here’s What Gamers Can Expect

Today Sony officially launched its PlayStation 4 console. Gamers in countries across the world today will be switching on their new consoles and playing launch titles such as Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, and Resogun.

The PS4 represents Sony’s attempt at luring gamers back to its consoles after Microsoft’s Xbox 360 managed to challenge its console market dominance. Since the PS4’s reveal in February, Sony has been playing on gamer nostalgia with ads reminding gamers of the days of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2. The company also focused almost exclusively on gaming – a different strategy from Microsoft, which is targeting a broader segment of consumers with TV features.

That marketing tactic held through last night, when Sony held a televised, hour-long launch event at The Standard hotel in New York. The event, which can be seen in its entirety below, was full of game previews, developer interviews, and even a few reveals for exclusive PS4 content. Some of the highlights include the Infamous: Second Son release date, a PS4-exclusive Metal Gear Solid V mission, and the reveal of a new Uncharted game for PS4.

In addition to the event, Sony today also released a longer launch trailer for its new console. The video offers glimpses of the already-announced games coming to the PS4 over the next couple of years and even manages to tease the hardware:

  • Sony’s #4ThePlayers Campaign Culminates In PS4 Launch Trailer

Over the past few weeks, PlayStation Europe has been creating a number of amazing videos under the $4ThePlayers tagline. It all started with a look back on the history of PlayStation that was then followed by witty viral ads for Street Fighter and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Now all of these come together for one of the best ads that Sony has ever produced.

It all starts with Ryu in a cab as the world slowly transforms from ours into the world of PlayStation. With references to Killzone, Knack, Watch Dogs and more, Sony seems to be going back to its old PS2 mantra – “Live in your world. Play in ours.”

The ad is certainly epic, but it seems a little mean to raise the hype even more for the Europeans that have to wait until November 29 for the PS4. Still, they can at least boast that they got a better PS4 launch ad than us.That’s gotta be worth something.

It’s almost here, folks. The PS4 launches at midnight tonight and the PlayStation faithful are readying themselves for a cold night of camping out in front of their retailer of choice. Before you grab your coat and hat, you might want to check out one final bit of PS4 gameplay.

Last night, Jimmy Fallon joined Ice-T to check out the PS4 one last time before its launch. They check out the Playroom mini-game collection that will ship with every PS4 console. While the core gamers out there will probably scoff at it, it actually looks pretty fun.

It should be noted that the Playroom software does require the player have the PlayStation Camera. It’s sold separately from the PS4 and costs $59.99. It will be available alongside the PS4 at launch tomorrow.

  • PlayStation App Released For iOS, Android

With only days to go before the release of the PlayStation 4 on Friday, Sony today released its companion mobile app for its upcoming console. The PlayStation App is now available for free through both Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

The app was first previewed in a video Sony released previewing its vision for an inclusive PlayStation ecosystem that revolves around the PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and mobile devices. It was then detailed and demoed back in September around the time of the Tokyo Game Show.

The PlayStation App allows PlayStation 4 gamers to keep up with their PlayStation 4 details while on-the-go. The app allows users to see what their PSN friends are playing and search through their profiles or easily send messages over the network in a chat interface. Trophies and recent friend activity can all be seen on the app, and all of these things, including game invitations and alerts, can be accessed quickly through a notifications bar.

The app will also be the software that enables gamers to take advantage of their tablet or smartphone as an interface device for games that support such functionality. Game manuals and the PlayStation Blog can also be viewed through the app.

More importantly for Sony, the PlayStation App provides full access to the PlayStation Store. Gamers will be able to purchase games and add-ons anywhere, then immediately push them to their PS4 console for download.

  • Here’s One Last Resogun Trailer Before Its Launch

The PS4 review embargo lifted this morning, and Resogun stands tall as the highest rated PS4 launch game. It appears to be the Geometry Wars of this generation, and it will likely remain one of the most popular titles on the system thanks to it being free for PlayStation Plus members.

Now, you may be unreasonably excited for Resogun and are having a hard time waiting for the PS4 to launch on November 15. To help tide you over, Sony has released what appears to be the final trailer for the game today. In it, we get a good look at some of the diverse and unique levels the developers at Housemarque have been able to come up with:

On the PlayStation blog, the team at Housemarque announced that Resogun will feature a co-op mode. In co-op, players will get to choose between three ships – Nemesis, Ferox and Phobos. Each ship has different stats that make them more suited for certain situations.

Resogun will be available on the PSN for PS4 starting November 15. It will be free for PlayStation Plus members whereas non-members can pick it up for $15. You shouldn’t have to do that, however, as every PS4 sold will come with a free month of PS Plus.
