  • PS4 Update 1.60 Adds Support For Wireless Headsets

When the PS4 first launched, the system only supported wired headsets. It was a major disappointment for PS3 owners hoping their $100 wireless headset would be supported out of the box. It wasn’t like Sony just killed support though – it promised that it would update the PS4 firmware in early 2014 to include support. January came and gone without a peep, but now Sony is finally giving audiophiles what they want.

Sony announced this morning that the PS4 will be getting system software update version 1.60 tonight which adds support for both the PULSE and PULSE- Elite Edition wireless headsets. PS4 gamers can finally enjoy 7.1 virtual surround sound that the PULSE headsets provide.

If you don’t have a PULSE headset, Sony will also be releasing the PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset early this month to take advantage of the new update. The new headset features 7.1 virtual surround sound, a noise-canceling microphone, customizable faceplates and even custom audio modes built for specific games. For example, the guys at Sucker Punch will be building a custom audio profile for inFamous: Second Son for use with the headset.

Here’s a quick video of the headset in action:

Sony says the Gold headset can connect to the PS4, PS3 or PC through a wireless adapter and can remain active for 8 hours before needing to recharge. It can also connect to a mobile device through its included 3.5mm audio cable adapter. It will retail for $99 when it launches early this month.

  • ‘Ready to Run’ Announced For PlayStation 4

The PlayStation 4 may not have launched with many exclusive games, but in the past two months newly announced PS4 games have been popping up almost every week. This week already Kalypso Media announced that it will be porting its city-building simulator Tropico 5 to the PS4 sometime this year.

Today Sony and Ukrainian developer Beatshapers announced that a game called Ready to Run will hit the PS4 sometime in 2014. The game is being described as a “remote-controlled car racing game” with a “retro-futuristic” design.

Beatshapers is well-known on PlayStation 3 for its downloadable titles which include StarDrone Extreme and Jetpack Joyride. For Ready to Run the developer promises 15 futuristic-looking RC cars, “endless” track configurations, and multiple multiplayer modes.

A teaser for the game accompanied the announcement, though it seems Beatshapers missed the memo that dubstep in video game trailers is no longer a thing:

Ready to Run joins a growing slate of smaller downloadable titles that have been released or are coming for the PS4. Though these games are not the type of big-budget experiences that will sell consoles, they do indicate that there is significant developer interest in the PS4 – something that should encourage, Sony, PS4 owners, and the game industry as a whole.

  • Sherlock Holmes Makes The Jump To Next Gen With Crimes and Punishments

The Sherlock Holmes adventure games from Focus Home Interactive have apparently been popular enough to warrant multiple sequels since the first game was released in 2002. The franchise has moved between various platforms, including the DS, Wii and PS3; but now is making its way onto next-gen consoles.

Focus Home Interactive announced this week that Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishments – the latest game in the franchise – will be making its way to the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and PS4 in the first quarter. There is no Xbox One version planned at this time.

For those new to the franchise, the modern Sherlock Holmes games try to walk a thin line between the investigative aspects that make the BBC series so popular and the action elements that make Guy Ritchie’s films also popular. In other words, you’ll be solving mysteries whilst beating up bad guys.

As for the mysteries, the trailer promises players will be solving six cases throughout the course of the game. There’s no mention of which cases he will be solving, but Sherlock Holmes super fans will no doubt recognize a few of the scenarios in the below trailer:

  • ‘Tropico 5’ Announced for PlayStation 4

‘Tropico 5’ Announced for PlayStation 4

As hyped as it was, SimCity ended up disappointing nearly everyone. The game’s small city sizes required players to engage in multiplayer or build multiple cities rather than create the large, complex cities fans of the genre enjoy. Though small, the mechanics within cities were also odd, with pathing issues causing traffic jams or ineffectual fire brigades. Add to this the always-online DRM built into the game (which caused the launch fiasco) and it’s unclear who exactly the game was made for.

For fans of city-building games, however, there is hope. Kalypso Media today officially announced that Tropico 5 will be coming to the PlayStation 4.

Tropico 5 is the latest island-nation simulator from Kalypso, putting players in the shoes of “El Presidente” the multi-generational leader of Tropico. Much like other city-building games, players will have to build up their island’s infrastructure all while dealing with natural and man-made challenges and attempting to govern an ever-increasing population of citizens. The new game also adds co-op and competitive multiplayer modes (not mandatory) for up to four players.

“We are delighted to be able to work with Sony to bring Tropico 5 to PlayStation 4 and enter the next-generation market.” said Andrew Johnson, managing director for Kalypso UK. “The PlayStation 4 version of Tropico 5 will expand the Tropico brand to the new generation hardware and to a new generation of gamers.”

Kalypso has not announced a release date for the PlayStation 4 version of Tropico, but says that one will be announced “in due course.” The PC version of the game is currently set for release sometime during 2014.

  • Outlast Free On PS4 Next Month For Plus Members

Every month, Sony serves up a number of free games for PlayStation Plus members. January was a touch act to follow with great games like BioShock Infinite and Brothers going free on the PS3, but it looks like February might be even better.

Sony unveiled this morning that Outlast – the indie horror title that scared PC gamers in 2013 – will be going free on the PS4 at launch in February for Plus members. Outlast is only the fourth free game to hit PS Plus on the PlayStation 4, but it may be the most “next-gen” game thus far outside of Resogun.

For PS3 owners, they can look forward to a trifecta of excellent games – Metro: Last Light, Payday 2 and Remember Me. Metro: Last Light is the sequel to 4A Games’ excellent Metro 2033. The original game was never available on the PS3, but gamers who only have a PS3 won’t be lost as the game’s opening does an admirable job of catching players up on the plot.

Payday 2 is the popular co-op shooter that has four players taking on the role of bank robbers as they attempt to get away with the perfect heist. The console versions of the title haven’t been supported as well as the PC version, but it should still be a fun time for those looking for a good co-op game.

Finally, Remember Me is a new IP from Capcom that features a near future Paris, combat with customizable combos and a memory manipulation mechanic that makes the game worthwhile.

As for PlayStation Vita, fans of the handheld will get Modnation Racers Road Trip and Street Fighter X Tekken in February.

Here’s a short preview of all the games in February’s update:

  • Kingdom Hearts III Gets A Sort Of New Trailer

Kingdom Hearts III Gets A Sort Of New Trailer

At E3 2013, Square Enix finally gave Kingdom Hearts fans what they really wanted after years of spin-offs – Kingdom Hearts III. While the announcement was little more than a prerendered trailer, it set off a wave of excitement that’s rarely seen anymore these days. Since then, we’ve not seen much of it, but the upcoming Japanese PS4 launch changes that.

Sony shared a new Kingdom Hearts trailer this morning ahead of the Japanese PS4 launch in February. While the game is not due out until at least 2015, Sony and Square have to get the hype train started early. After all, the promise of a new Kingdom Hearts game a year from now is a sure fire way to nab early PS4 sales from hardcore gamers.

Unfortunately, Square Enix saw fit to reuse old footage for this latest trailer. There might be some new stuff here, but it looks to mostly use footage that we saw back from E3. They could have at least used some of the in-game footage shown off at a Disney convention late last year.

Oh well, at least we know that Kingdom Hearts III is in development. That’s pretty much all fans need to know at this point. To hold them over, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMix will be hitting the PS3 this year with HD versions of Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded.

  • ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ Coming to PS4 in April

‘Final Fantasy XIV’ Coming to PS4 in April

Since relaunching in 2013 as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Final Fantasy XIV has enjoyed moderate MMO success on PC and PlayStation 3. Now publisher Square Enix is bringing its re-tooled MMO to Sony’s latest console.

Square Enix today announced that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be coming to PlayStation 4 on April 14. An open beta test for the PS4 version of the game will begin on February 22.

Pre-orders for the PS4 version of the game begin today, and players who pre-order will get early access to the game starting April 11. Pre-orders also come with two in-game items: a Mog cap and a Cait Sith doll minion.

A collector’s edition version of Final Fantasy XIV for the PS4 has also been announced. That version will come with some different box art, an artbook, an extra disc with “movie content,” a soundtrack, art cards, and a security token. It also comes with several in-game items, including a fat chocobo mount, a coeurl mount, a wind-up moogle, a helm of light, a baby behemoth, and a behemoth barding. The collector’s edition is also available in a digital-only format, but only comes with the in-game items.

Along with the release date announcement, Square Enix revealed that Final Fantasy XIV subscribers on the PlayStation 3 will be able to jump to the PS4 version with little trouble. Starting April 11, players will be able to transfer from PS3 to PS4. The transfer is one-way, meaning that players will not be able to switch back to PS3 after it is complete.

  • Thief Can Be As Difficult As You Want It To Be

When the Thief reboot was announced in 2012, many fans of the franchise were concerned. They felt that a modern take on the franchise would do away with many of the gameplay elements that made the original games so challenging and memorable. The developers at Square Enix Montreal has heard them loud and clear though.

In the latest gameplay trailer for Thief, we get a look at the customization options players will find in the final game. Upon starting up a new game, you get to choose from four difficulty levels with the last one being “Custom.” In this menu, you can toggle various options to make the game feel more like the older games, like disabling checkpoints and focus or making it so that the player can only use stealth takedowns on enemies.

For the players that really want to challenge themselves, the developers have put in what are called “Ultimate Thief Mods.” These disable upgrades, make it so that players can’t kill enemies, have players fail the mission upon being spotted and more. These were included in the game for the long-time Thief who want the ultimate challenge.

While you’re at it, check out some fresh gameplay footage as well:

Thief will be out on February 25 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC.

  • Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor Might Be The Most Fun You Have With Lord of The Rings Fan Fiction

Monolith Productions made survival horror tense and fun on the Xbox 360 and PS3 with F.E.A.R. and Condemned: Criminal Origins. After making a free-to-play shooter and a MOBA, they’re back with an ambitious console and PC title set in Middle-Earth.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is a new video game set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The game’s plot is not based on any of the writings from Tolkien, but rather an entirely new plot written by Christian Cantamessa – lead writer on Red Dead Redemption.

In the first gameplay trailer for Shadow of Mordor, we’re introduced to what makes the game so ambitious – the Nemesis System. The Nemesis System allows enemies to remember past encounters with the player character and have that inform their behavior. In the demo, we’re given the example of an orc that’s far more violent towards the player character thanks to a previous run-in that left half his face covered in burns.

Since this is a video game, Tolkien’s lore doesn’t matter. The game lets the player character – a ranger – use wraith powers to take control of enemies, instill fear in them and see the world that only the wraiths and those who wear the one ring can see. Tolkien diehards will probably cry foul, but it looks like a lot of fun.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is scheduled to launch later this year on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.

  • Here’s A Better Look At Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

At VGX 2013, it was revealed that Square Enix would be bringing 2013’s Tomb Raider to PS4 and Xbox One in a definitive edition that exponentially improves the visuals. At the time, all we knew was that this version of the game would run at 60FPS in 1080p and feature upgraded textures and TressFX.

While we all now know about Tomb Raider’s next gen debut, some may want to know how the team did it. That’s where the latest video from Square Enix comes in as it explores the new technologies used to upgrade Tomb Raider from its PS3/Xbox 360 debut to the PS4 and Xbox One.

The cynics out there are saying this is just an excuse for Square Enix to sell more copies of Tomb Raider. While that’s certainly true, it looks like the development team did have another goal in mind with the next gen version. They say that gamers can look at Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition as their first stab at making a next-gen version of Lara Croft. It goes without saying that next Tomb Raider title built specifically for next-gen consoles will look even better.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will be available on January 28 for the PS4 and Xbox One.

  • Here’s How You Get A Job In Writing Video Games

Not everybody is cut out to be a programmer, game designer, artist or audio engineer. It’s the unfortunate truth that keeps a lot of people out of the games industry despite wanting to be involved in some way or the other. While it’s certainly not as glamorous as being a game designer, one avenue available to aspiring game makers is to be a video game writer.

In a new video from PlayStation UK, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’s lead writer Darby McDevitt shares some tips on how to write video games for a living. It should be obvious, but his first suggestion is to find a love for writing. If you don’t love writing, you’re not going to love writing video games. Once you find that love, start writing for all kinds of mediums – film, novels, games and poetry.

The other tip that may not be as apparent is the fact that games writers rarely start off as such. You’re going to need experience in other aspects of game making, especially game design. McDevitt notes that a major problem in the industry today is that there are writers who have no design experience and designers who have no writing experience.

In short, take whatever job you can get in the games industry. It’s rare for anybody in games to only have one skill set anymore. You’re going to have to wear multiple hats to be successful in the games industry.

  • Sony Redesigned The PS3 For PlayStation Now

At CES, Sony announced that it was getting into the game streaming business with PlayStation Now. The new service will purportedly allow people to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on their PS4, PS Vita, tablets and smartphones via an Internet connection. Now more details are emerging about the service and it looks like Sony had to get a little creative to get PlayStation Now up and running.

Digital Foundry reports that Sony has created custom PS3 hardware for use with the PlayStation Now service. It appears that Sony attempted to run PlayStation Now off of standard retail PS3 retail units, but found that it was impossible to do so. The size of the units combined with the amount of power needed to operate them proved insurmountable.

With standard retail units out of the question, what was Sony to do? According to the report, the company built custom PS3 hardware that houses eight custom console units into a single rack server. In other words, they placed eight PS3 motherboards into a single rack server to solve both their space and power issues.

Beyond fixing its space and power issues, Digital Foundry notes the PS3 hardware helps Sony solve the latency issues that affects nearly every streaming service. With game streaming services, the operators have to reduce latency to a point that’s nearly indistinguishable from the input latency that occurs naturally with consoles. While an Internet connection is never going to provide the kind of response times that you get with an actual console, the newly redesigned hardware should hopefully help Sony get awfully close.

It should go without saying, but Sony’s new PS3 hardware will never be available to consumers. It’s reported existence is interesting though as it shows Sony is dedicated to making game streaming work. While others have come before it, none have ever truly been successful for a number of reasons. With PlayStation Now, Sony could have the first commercially successful game streaming service, but that’s only if its custom hardware can stand up to the task.

  • Tetris is Coming to PS4, Xbox One

Tetris is Coming to PS4, Xbox One

Since its debut in 1984, Tetris has become one of the most well-known and iconic franchises in gaming history. Tetris games have appeared on almost every major video game platform in the past three decades. Today The Tetris Company confirmed that the classic game will continue to have a place in gaming’s future.

The Tetris Company has officially announced that a Tetris game will be coming for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. The new Tetris game will be released as a digital download for these next-gen platforms.

What exactly this new Tetris game is hasn’t yet been detailed. However, the game will be published by Ubisoft, the publisher of games such as the Assassin’s Creed series.

“We’re very excited to start working with this world-renowned brand, and can’t wait to combine Ubisoft’s expertise and all the capacities of next-gen consoles to create an exciting new Tetris experience for fans,” said Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft.

As part of the announcement, The Tetris Company pointed out that 2014 will see the 30 anniversary of the classic game. According to the company, Tetris games have sold “hundreds of millions” of copies in 185 countries around the world in that time. Tetris has appeared on more than 50 different platforms an in more than 50 different languages since its debut.

“We welcome Ubisoft to the Tetris family,” said Henk Rogers, managing director of The Tetris Company. “I am 100% sure they will develop one of the best versions of the Tetris game ever.”

  • R.B.I. Baseball 14 Will Attempt To Fill The Gap Left By MLB 2K’s Death

Earlier this month, 2K Sports killed the only multi-platform baseball simulation game with the announcement that it would not renew its license with the MLB. Following the announcement, baseball fans who owned Xbox consoles were dismayed to learn that they would not be getting a baseball game in 2014 while PS3 and PS4 owners were getting Sony’s MLB 14 The Show. Well, fret not anymore Xbox fans, you’re getting a baseball game in 2014 as well.

The MLB announced this morning that it’s reviving the classic R.B.I. Baseball franchise this year with R.B.I. Baseball 14. The franchise has not been seen in nearly 20 years, but the MLB apparently felt it was time to bring it back now that MLB 2K is out of the picture.

Unfortunately, we don’t know a lot about R.B.I. Baseball 14 just yet. The announcement only says that MLBAM (Major League Baseball Advanced Media) is in charge of development and that it will be out on consoles and mobile this year. With MLBAM behind the title, it’s safe to say that it will be more of a casual title instead of the simulation game that defines MLB The Show.

While it may be disappointing for baseball fans on Xbox, R.B.I. Baseball 14 will be the only baseball game they get this year. It looks like EA Sports is not interested in reviving its MVP Baseball franchise and nobody else has the money or development staff to try their hand at a baseball game.

So for now, Xbox fans can only wait to see if R.B.I. Baseball 14 gives them the baseball fix they need, or they can just go ahead and buy a PS3/PS4 for MLB 14 The Show.

  • GameStop Reports $3.15 Billion In Sales Over The Holidays

In November, Sony and Microsoft launched their next generation games consoles – the PS4 and Xbox One. Both consoles have now gone on to sell more than 7 million units combined and that’s definitely helping the bottom line of those in the business of selling games. The increase in hardware sales was readily apparent at GameStop during the holidays.

GameStop announced today that it had made $3.15 billion during the nine week holiday period that ended on January 4. The retailer notes that it saw a 9.3 percent increase in revenue compared to last year’s holiday sales period. One of the reasons for this increase was the emergence of next-gen hardware.

“I am pleased to report that the extensive planning by our entire team over the past year to prepare for the new console launches paid off,” said Paul Raines, GameStop CEO. “Our outstanding execution during the holidays resulted in GameStop securing the number one market share position in the U.S. and in most of the countries in which we operate today. GameStop also had the highest software and accessory attach ratio of any retailer for both new consoles. Building off this momentum, we are in an excellent position to drive the global adoption of the next generation of new video game products in 2014.”

Of course, not everything was rosy for GameStop during the holiday season. The retailer saw a decline in Xbox 360 and PS3 software sales thanks in part to strong sales of next-gen software. Sales of new current-gen software saw a decrease of 22.5 percent while used software grew by 7 percent.

As for GameStop’s other businesses, there was growth across the board. It’s digital business brought in $207.3 million, an increase of 14.9 percent over the previous holiday season. It’s mobile business brought in a respectable $94.8 million, an increase of 23.8 percent.

“Clearly, same store sales were driven by very strong growth in new hardware,” said Rob Lloyd, GameStop CFO. “The higher percentage of sales in the hardware category resulted in better than expected comps, but lower gross margin dollars during the holiday selling period. In addition, new software sales came in below our expectations. Based on these results, GameStop now expects its fourth quarter and full year 2013 same store sales to be at the high end of the current guidance range and fourth quarter earnings per share to be in a range of $1.85 to $1.95 and full year earnings per share to be in a range of $2.96 to $3.06.”

  • Rayman Legends For PS4, Xbox One Coming Out A Week Early

In mid-December, Ubisoft announced – with the help of Snoop Lion – that Rayman Legends would be coming to the PS4 and Xbox One in early 2014. It was originally announced that the game would launch on February 25, but Ubisoft has decided to push forward the release date by a week.

Ubisoft announced via its blog today that Rayman Legends for PS4 and Xbox One is now coming out on February 18 in North America and February 20 in Europe. With the updated launch announcement, Ubisoft decided to also address some of the new additions being made to both version of the game.

As you might expect, both versions of the game will be getting exclusive characters. On Xbox One, players will get characters inspired by Far Cry 3 and Splinter Cell. For PS4, players will get a character inspired by Edward Kenway from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Ubisoft is also making a character called Champion Ray available to those who rank highly in the online challenges.

As for version specific additions, the Xbox One adds time-limited achievements on top of the achievements already available in the Xbox 360 version of the game. These achievements will “require you to perform specific actions during a limited amount of time (one week).”

The PS4 version gets some actual gameplay additions thanks to its new hardware. The first is called Camera Mode and it allows players to pause the game by touching the touchpad on the DualShock 4. From there, you can pinch and zoom to view the scene in detail. The touchpad will also be used to scratch off lucky tickets. Of course, the game will also support Remote Play with PS Vita.

Seeing as Rayman Legends is a 2D platformer, it wasn’t exactly taxing on last-gen hardware. The game ran at 60FPS in 1080p so some might be wondering what the extra horsepower of next-gen systems brings to the game. Ubisoft says it allows them to do two things – the first is that textures are no longer compressed so players will be able to experience the visuals as they were intended. The second is that load times have been abolished so players are instantly dropped into the levels upon entering a painting.

If you never got the chance to play Rayman Legends in 2013, you really should consider changing that this year. While it’s a great experience on any platform, it looks like the PS4 and Xbox One versions will be the definitive experience (outside of the Wii U version).

  • PlanetSide 2 Is Getting Some Major Updates In 2014

Sony Online Entertainment had a major hit on its hands in 2012 with the launch of PlanetSide 2 on the PC. The free-to-play shooter attracted casual and hardcore gamers alike with its combination solid shooting mechanics and approachable gameplay.

With the game entering its second year of operation, some may be wondering if SOE has any new content coming for the game. Well, that should be a pretty obvious yes, but the developers want to make it clear that 2014 is going to be the best year yet for Planetside 2.

The first big news of 2014 is that PlanetSide 2 will begin receiving weekly patches starting January 15. This will allow the team to more frequently address bugs and balance problems to keep the game running smoothly. The game will also be receiving at least two new content packs.

Perhaps the biggest news this year, however, is that PlanetSide 2 is coming to the PlayStation 4. The free-to-play shooter will remain completely intact with its move to the console.

  • Sony Says Games Are Central To Its Overall Vision At CES

The Consumer Electronics Show is not usually a place where you expect to see games. It’s a show that’s usually focused on the biggest things in tech that aren’t games. Sony bucked that trend just a little bit this year by focusing on its PlayStation brand during its press conference, including the announcement of PlayStation Now.

What made Sony’s presence at CES more interesting than usual, however, was how it singled out its gaming operation as the inspiration behind its latest comeback strategy. At CES, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said that the company was working to deliver “wow” moments to consumers. Those “wow” moments are apparently best represented by games.

Of course, no other Sony studio makes gamers say “wow” more than Media Molecule. The developer helped usher in an era of user-created content on PlayStation 3 with LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2. They also gave the Vita a shot in the arm with 2013’s Tearaway. As part of Sony’s presser, Kaz invited Media Molecule to elaborate on their creative process.

  • Get Even Is A Next-Gen Shooter From The Folks Who Brought Us Painkiller HD

The Farm 51 made a name for itself in 2012 with the release of Painkiller Hell & Damnation. The remake of the original Painkiller kept the original game’s fast-paced gunplay in tact while updating the visuals to current gen standards. The team then took on the Quatermain mythos in Deadfall Adventures – a first person shooter/puzzle game hybrid that was much better than critics would have you believe. Now the team is back again with a next-gen shooter that may change how we approach single-player campaigns.

This morning, The Farm 51 announced Get Even – a first-person shooter for Xbox One, PS4 and PC that challenges players to distinguish between what is real and what isn’t. It features a novel approach to multiplayer where the single-player campaign will be dotted with players trying to take down the hero alongside the usual AI combatants.

The game also promises a narrative that’s shaped by the decisions made by the player during the course of the game. By taking one path over the other, the narrative is significantly changed.

In the first trailer for the game, we’re treated to what looks like a live-action trailer. The developers claim it’s all in game, however, as they’re using a new scanning technology that allows them to place real world locations into the game.

Get Even will be released in 2015 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

  • Sony Sold More Than 4.2 Million PlayStation 4s Last Year

Microsoft announced yesterday that it sold more than three million Xbox One consoles before the end of 2013. Now Sony has weighed in with its latest PlayStation 4 sales figures, and it seems that the PlayStation brand is back on top.

At Sony’s big Consumer Entertainment Show (CES) event Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House announced that more than 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles had been sold to consumers as of December 28, 2013. The figure shows that Sony was able to sell around 1.2 million more of its new video game consoles than Microsoft was in the last few weeks of 2013. The announcement also demonstrates that Sony has been able to manufacture and distribute the PlayStation 4 at a breakneck pace, as the console currently sells in 53 different countries.

Along with the PlayStation 4 hardware, it seems that Sony is off to a good start in software sales for the new console. Sony estimates that more than 9.7 million PS4 games were sold before the end of 2013. Top PS4 games include big yearly titles such as Call of Duty: Ghosts and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, as well as Sony’s own Killzone: Shadow Fall.

Adding even more good news, Sony revealed that subscriptions for its PS Plus service have increased by 90% since the PlayStation 4 launched on November 15. The service is required for PlayStation 4 users to play multiplayer games online – a requirement that is absent for PlayStation 3 consoles.

The PlayStation 4’s streaming capabilities, which could easily have been dismissed as a gimmick when they were announced last year, also seem to have resonated with gamers. Sony estimates that 1.7 million broadcasts have been sent from PlayStation 4 consoles and Twitch has stated that 20% of its broadcasters own a PlayStation 4.

“The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn’t be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network,” said House. “After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014.”

  • CES 2014: Nyko Unveils Line Of PlayStation Accessories

For the longest time, Nyko has been in the after market video game accessory business. It’s biggest contribution was the Xbox 360 intercooler that helped to keep the original hardware a bit cooler than its original fan could. Now the company is at CES with a new line of accessories for that brand new PlayStation 4 you bought back in November.

At CES, Nyko announced that it’s bringing its range of usual products to the PlayStation 4 later this year. The accessories range from cooling solutions to extended battery life accessories. In short, there’s probably something for anybody interested in after market game console solutions.

First up is the Intercooler for the PS4 – a small fan that you can attach to the back of the console to help keep it cool. While Sony designed the PS4 to dissipate heat away from components, it can still get a little too warm after extended play sessions. The Intercooler is designed to keep the PlayStation 4 cool over longer periods of time. It will be available later this year for $25.

In other PS4 accessory news, Nyko also unveiled the PowerPak for the DualShock 4 controller. It’s a small 1,000 mAh battery add-on for the DualShock 4 that Nyko claims adds hours onto the controller’s admittedly poor battery life. The battery pack can be charged through the regular micro-USB charger that came with the PS4 so you won’t need any other accessories. It will be available later this year for $20.

As for the PlayStation Vita, Nyko is upgrading its well-received Power Grip accessory to accommodate the slimmer PS Vita 2000. The new Power Grip has been slimmed down to match the new Vita redesign while still adding twice the battery life to the system. It will be available later this year for $20.

On a final note, those who don’t care about game console accessories will be pleased to know that Nyko also has a wireless charger for mobile devices in the works. Those who have a Qi-enabled phone will be able to wirelessly charge their devices using the Nyko Power Base. It supports the Galaxy S4 and Nexus 5 out of the box, but Nyko says it should work with any Qi-enabled device. It will be available in the spring for $40.
