  • Call Of Duty: Ghosts Gets 30-Minute Gameplay Demo Ahead Of E3

E3 2013 doesn’t officially kick off until tomorrow, but the major players will hold their press conferences today. Before that happens, Activision wants to steal a little bit of their thunder with a massive 30-minute gameplay demo of the latest Call of Duty title.

As was revealed during the Xbox One reveal, Call of Duty: Ghosts will be a next-gen launch title for the Xbox One and PS4. The title will be going up head-to-head against Battlefield 4 which got its own long trailer earlier this year. Now you can compare the two to find which next-gen shooter you’ll be pledging allegiance to in October.

You can bet that Activision will be at the Microsoft press conference today to reveal more gameplay footage of Call of Duty: Ghosts running on the Xbox One. You’ll also probably hear the words “innovative,” “exclusive,” and “cinematic” thrown around quite a bit.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be out later this year for Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4 and PC. There’s no mention of a Wii U version yet, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

  • Daylight Brings Randomly Generated Horror To The PS4

It’s rare to see horror games on consoles anymore. Unless it has empowering weapons or a dudebro protagonist, horror games just don’t exactly sell that well. A new game hitting the PS4 next year may change that.

Zombie Studios have announced Daylight – a procedurally generated horror game for the PS4 and PC. The game features no weapons whatsoever. Instead, the players will only have access to a simple smartphone to combat whatever they encounter.

This is one of the more interesting games that’s being developed for the PS4, and I can’t wait to see where it goes. We’re likely to see more from its publishers at ATLUS during E3 next week.

Daylight will launch in early 2014 for the PS4 and PC.

  • Dying Light Is Mirror’s Edge With Zombies

Mirror’s Edge was a pretty cool game. Could it be improved? Sure. Is adding zombies to the formula a good idea? We’ll find out next year.

Dead Island developer Techland are hard at work on their new zombie game called Dying Light. In short, it’s Mirror’s Edge with Zombies. Here’s the official synopsis if you’re into that:

The city, devastated by a deadly outbreak, is a battleground. Witness the survivors’ desperate race to a cache of supplies. Free running from here to there is only a part of the challenge. The real test is trying to stay alive through the night, when the infected become more active and even more deadly. This is your world now, every day and every night, so run! Good night, good luck!

Dying Light will be released in 2014 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

  • This Is What PS4, Xbox One Games Will Look Like

Sony and Microsoft have shown us some footage of what the future of gaming will look like on their next generation platforms, but it’s always nice to have an outside opinion.

AMD, the company crafting the chips that will power the PS4 and Xbox One, have released a video showing the kind of visuals that its new A-Series APUs can push. The “Jaguar” SoC inside the PS4 and Xbox One will be based on these APUs. That means that the video below is close to what you will be seeing on next generation consoles.

Of course, games on next-gen consoles may look even better than this as both Microsoft and Sony will be using heavily modified versions of AMD’s APUs for their consoles. It’s not known exactly how much power developers will be able to squeeze out of these chips, but early footage from games like Killzone: Shadow Fall and Forza Motorsport 5 is encouraging.

For those who don’t care about consoles, AMD is now selling its A-Core APUs for PC builders that want to try out the future of SoC gaming PCs. With it being AMD, the chips are extremely affordable as well with its flagship APU retailing for only $150.

  • How Much Will The PS4, Xbox One Cost? One Analyst Has An Idea

The cost question is arguably the most important when it comes to next-generation game consoles. Even with all the best games in the world, too high of an asking price will ensure that nobody but the most hardcore of gamers will buy the new console. One analyst thinks that the price of the next-gen consoles will be pretty reasonable this time around though.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter recently sent a note to investors saying that the PS4 will retail for $350 while the Xbox One will retail for $400. The price discrepancy is all due to the price of building materials which he pegged at $275 for the PS4 and $325 for the Xbox One.

Even at those prices, it may be hard to convince consumers to buy into them. The Wii U retailed last year for $300/$350 and it’s still struggling to find an audience. Of course, you can mostly blame that on the lack of games for the console, but the high price does factor into the equation.

In today’s age of subsidized smartphones, consumers are less and less interested in paying the full price of an electronic device upfront. Pachter says this may factor heavily into Microsoft’s strategy as he predicts the company will offer a subsidized version of the console to consumers:

“We believe the ability to watch live TV from a cable, telco, or satellite set-top box through Xbox One could entice an MSO to drive subscriptions through a subsidised box in exchange for a multi-year contract. The ‘always connected’ requirement for the Xbox One likely means that a broadband connection will be required, suggesting to us that ISPs may have an incentive to offer a subsidy as well.”

Even without a subsidy, Pachter’s predicted prices are lower than what the Xbox 360 and PS3 launched at in 2005/2006. The premium Xbox 360 retailed for $400 in 2005. When taking inflation into account, a $400 Xbox One would be cheaper than the Xbox 360 at launch. As for the PS3, it launched with a ridiculous price tag of $600. Sony would be absolutely foolish to try that again.

We’ll probably hear about official launch dates and price points at E3 next week. Sony and Microsoft will both hold press conferences on Monday, June 10.

  • The Xbox One Gets The NMA Treatment

The Xbox One reveal was kind of a mess. There’s still no definitive statement on the console’s used game policy, and its insistence on Kinect always being on has some people concerned. It’s the latter that gets torn apart in the latest report from our favorite Taiwanese animators.

I’m kind of surprised that NMA didn’t mock the ambiguous used game policy, but I guess you can’t really make that funny. Besides, it’s more fun to make fun of the Xbox One’s overreliance on television.

To compare, here’s NMA’s take on the PS4 unveiling back in February.

Even with the numerous games announced for the platform at the event, NMA still wasn’t impressed. Can nothing appease them?

  • Here’s An Inside Look At PS4 Development From The Killzone Team

Sony’s Conversations with Creators series has been wonderful. We’ve gotten an inside look at PS4 development from some of the most talented teams on the planet. Now Sony is giving us that same inside look at what will undoubtedly be the visual benchmark of the PS4’s launch – Killzone: Shadow Fall.

In the video above, Guerilla reveals that Killzone: Shadow Fall will utilize the PS4’s ability to let gamers play a game while it’s still being downloaded. To be more specific, the studio says that it will download the menu and the first level and then start downloading the rest of the game while you’re playing through it. This way, gamers will no longer have to wait for the full game to download before jumping into the action.

Killzone: Shadow Fall will be a launch title for the PS4 when it launches later this year.

  • Bungie’s Destiny Gets A New CG Trailer, Still No Gameplay

At the February PS4 conference, Bungie announced that Destiny would be coming to the PS4 and PS3. Now the developer has announced that it will be bringing the game to Sony’s E3 press conference with a new trailer.

The trailer doesn’t really tell us much about the game, but it does have that cinematic flair that made Halo such a groundbreaking game when it launched on the original Xbox. If the actual game can pull this off, Destiny may just be a keeper.

We still don’t have any gameplay, but Bungie announced in the above trailer that that the gameplay will finally be shown off at Sony’s E3 press conference on June 10. It’s a pretty big win for Sony when you consider that Bungie was owned by Microsoft just a few years ago.

Beyond the Sony presser, expect a lot more Destiny news at E3. Besides Call of Duty Ghosts, this is Activision’s other big game for 2013. There’s a lot of expectation riding on it so Bungie has to get it right, and I have no reason to doubt them yet.

  • Here’s An Inside Look At PS4 Development From Jonathan Blow

The biggest surprise from the PS4 unveiling was when Jonathan Blow, creator of Braid, announced that his next – The Witness – would be a limited console exclusive on the PS4. Now the famed, and rather outspoken, creator is back talking about indie game development and his relationship with Sony.

As an added bonus, there’s some new footage of The Witness in action as well.

It’s so refreshing to hear a game developer say that he puts his creative vision ahead of profit. Most indies are like that though, and it’s fantastic to see Sony supporting them in such a big way.

  • Need For Speed: Rivals Is EA’s Next-Gen Racing Game

Both Sony and Microsoft will be launching their next-gen consoles with a racing game. EA will be joining them with its own racing franchise later this year.

EA announced today that it’s new studio – Ghost Games – is knee-deep in development on the next Need for Speed title. The game – titled Need for Speed: Rivals – will be the first next-gen entry for the series. The game is also coming to current gen systems and the PC. Like other games from EA this year, there was no Wii U version announced.

The above trailer indicates that the footage is all in-game. It’s also revealed that Criterion is helping out with development. With their racing game expertise, Rivals may just be the prettiest, and best playing, racing game this year.

Need for Speed: Rivals will launch on November 19 for all current-gen consoles and PC. It will presumably be a launch title for the PS4 and Xbox One.

  • Xbox One, PS4 Box Art Outed By Battlefield Facebook Account

The Xbox One and PS4 are still a few months away so a few of the finer details won’t be available just yet. Usually, the box art is one of the final things to be revealed with any new console, but it may have been revealed early.

The official Battlefield Facebook account was updated after the Xbox One unveiling to announce Battlefield 4 for the Xbox One and PS4. The graphic provided with the announcement features what may be the box art design for both consoles:

    Xbox One PS4 box art

Of course, the designs could be placeholders for now. If it is legitimate, Sony seems to be keeping a similar box art design from what it has used with the PS3 while Microsoft will be adopting a more minimalistic design with its box art. It’s not a bad thing at all, and the deep green color looks really good.

We’ll probably see final box art design a few months before launch, but third parties, like EA in this instance, will probably leak the final box art design long before Sony or Microsoft does.

Now if only Microsoft, or a third party, would be more forthcoming about its plans for used games on the Xbox One. The official statement is that used games will be playable on the console, but Microsoft is being entirely too vague about the whole thing.

  • You Will Finally Get To See What The PS4 Looks Like On June 10

There was only one question on the minds of many after February’s PS4 conferencewhere was the console itself? Well, those desperate to see what the PS4 actually looks like won’t have to wait much longer.

Sony announced today that it’s E3 2013 press conference will be taking place on June 10 at 6 p.m. PST/9 p.m. EST. To hype people up for the press conference, Sony has also released a short teaser that kind of shows what the new PS4 will look like if you squint really hard:

Of course, we’ll have to wait until June 10 to see what the final PS4 hardware will look like. Well, that is unless somebody decides to leak pictures of the hardware before then. Sony isn’t exactly known for being leak-proof.

In other next-gen news, we’re likely to see the next Xbox hardware tomorrow at its unveiling event. We might even see the next generation of Kinect hardware. Just don’t expect it to be cheap.

  • Here’s An Inside Look At PS4 Development From The Diablo III Team

It was announced in February that Blizzard was returning to console development. Now some may have been disappointed that the developer was only bringing a port of Diablo III to the console, but it’s still a pretty big deal to have the fastest selling PC game of all time come to a new console.

As such, the guys at Blizzard spoke to Sony about what it’s like to develop for the PS4. In short, they really like the new console. They especially like how the PS4 (and PS3) allows them to bring couch co-op to the Diablo franchise.

I feel that I must point out that Blizzard is super cruel to keep alluding to The Lost Vikings without announcing a new entry in the franchise. We can only hope that Diablo III will be successful enough on consoles to convince Blizzard to begin work on a new entry in its best franchise.

Diablo III will be out on the PS3 later this year, with the PS4 version being out some time after.

  • What The Heck Is Sony Teasing In This New Trailer?

Sony is going to announce a new game on May 21. It’s codenamed Panopticon. There’s no word on platforms yet, but it could very well be a PS4 game. Here’s the first trailer that gives us a good look at the game while telling us absolutely nothing about it:

People are already drawing comparisons to Square’s The World Ends With You. That’s probably not the case, however, as this is a Sony Japan Studio game. The studio is already hard at work on Rain and Puppeteer for the PS3 so it will be interesting to see if this is a PS3 or a PS4 launch game. I’m willing to bet on the latter as Sony Japan Studio has typically always had a game out at or near the launch of a new console.

Either way, we’ll find out more on May 21. I’m excited to find out more, and the buzz on the Internet seems to indicate I’m not alone.

  • Here’s An Inside Look At PS4 Development From The inFamous Second Son Studio

One of the stranger announcements at the PS4 event was Sucker Punch’s new inFamous game titled inFamous Second Son. It appears to be set in a dystopian London, not unlike the setting in V For Vendetta, where super powered vigilantes fight against overbearing law enforcement.

Now, we don’t know much about the game yet, but the team at Sucker Punch took a few minutes ouf of their day to talk with Game Informer about PS4 development, and what they like about developing for Sony’s new machine.

inFamous Second Son is expected to launch alongside the PlayStation 4 later this year.

  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Takes Place During The Golden Age Of Pirates

Ever since its announcement, we knew that the latest Assassin’s Creed title – Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – would have pirates playing a large role in the narrative. None of the trailers, until now that is, have really played up that fact.

In a new trailer released today, Ubisoft says that its lastest Assassin’s Creed title will present the true stories of the pirates who controlled the Atlantic Ocean in the 18th century. That’s a somewhat dubious claim as past titles in the franchise took great liberties with its historical figures. It’s probably not going to be as true to life as Sid Meier’s Pirates!, but it looks to be a fun romp in a theme that’s underutilized in games.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be out on October 29 for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U. It will also launch on the PS4 and next Xbox on or near their respective launch dates.

  • Here’s Five Minutes Of New Watch Dogs Gameplay

Despite having been announced almost a year ago, we haven’t seen much gameplay from Watch Dogs. Ubisoft prefers to trot out the same gameplay footage we’ve been seeing since February whenever they show it off to the press. That all changed this week with a new gameplay demo.

Official PlayStation Magazine was able to sit down with a new gameplay demo that features a gameplay element that we haven’t seen yet. The demo reveals that players will have to take over local bases before they can hack electronic devices in a district.

The above demo is running on a PC, but it’s said to be running on next-gen specs. In other words, the PlayStation 4 and next Xbox version of Watch Dogs should match what you’re seeing above.

Watch Dogs will launch on November 19 for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. It will also be out on the PS4 and the next Xbox on or near their respective launches.

  • Here’s Another Inside Look At PS4 Development From The Assassin’s Creed Team

Last week, Sony treated us to an inside look at PS4 development with the team behind Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs talking about the new hardware. Now Sony is back at Ubisoft again, but this time with the team behind Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

As expected, the Assassin’s Creed team absolutely adores the PlayStation 4. They say that the extra power allows them to add more detail to the game world. It’s nothing mind blowing, but gamers are sure to appreciate the extra flair here and there.

Like the Watch Dogs team before it, the Assassin’s Creed team seems to have latched onto the sharing capabilities of the PlayStation 4. The much lauded Share button and other social features will help make single player games part of a community that gamers may come to appreciate.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will launch October 29 on the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. It will most likely launch on next-gen systems – the PS4 and next Xbox – on their respective launch dates.

  • Here’s An Inside Look At PS4 Development From The Watch Dogs Studio

Here’s An Inside Look At PS4 Development From The Watch Dogs Studio

Since its reveal in February, Sony has been somewhat quiet on the PS4 front. There have been a number of game announcements for the console, but we never got a good look at what it’s like to make games for the console.

Sony is obviously hoping to dispel some of the mystery with a new video series – “Conversations with Creators.” The debut episode pulls aside the development team of Watch Dogs to talk about how the team at Ubisoft is bringing the game to the PS4.

The gameplay on show is nothing new, but it’s interesting to see how Ubisoft is working closely with Sony to make Watch Dogs extra special on the PS4. Part of that is accomplished thanks to the Share button, which the developers shower mountains of love on.

Despite the focus on the PS4, Watch Dogs is also being developed for pretty much every other HD platform under the sun. Ubisoft says the game will be out on the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC and the next Xbox later this year.

  • Diablo III For PS3 Goes Up For Preorder Today

At Sony’s PS4 event in February, Blizzard Entertainment announced that it was returning to console development after a long hiatus. It announced a Diablo III port for the PS3 and PS4 as its first project.

Blizzard Entertainment announced today the PS3 version of Diablo III is now available for preorder. There’s no launch date available just yet, but the developer confirmed once again that the title will be available later this year.

“We’ve poured blood, sweat, and hellfire into creating an epic Diablo III experience for PlayStation gamers,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “In addition to including all the improvements from the PC version over the past year, we’ve made several updates to Diablo III for play on the PS3. We got a ton of positive feedback from players who tried the game at PAX East, and we can’t wait to get it into everyone’s hands later this year.”

Those who preorder Diablo III will gain instant access to the Infernal Helm. It provides an experience boost to any player character who’s equipped with it.

The console version of Diablo III comes with another bonus in the form of ditching the PC version’s always online requirement. Players are free to play online, or offline, with up to four friends in online and local co-op modes.

There’s no word on whether or not the PS4 version of Diablo III will be available this year, but I would expect an announcement near the launch of the PS3 version. It would be pretty advantageous for Sony if its new machine were to launch with a game like Diablo III, especially if the PS4 version was cross-compatible with the PS3 version.

  • Developers Really Seem To Like The PS4 Controller

The DualShock design has remained fairly consistent since its introduction in 1997. Even the DualShock 3, with its motion controls and curved analog triggers, looked almost just like previous incarnations. Sony is changing all that with the PlayStation 4, and (Sony’s) developers couldn’t be happier.

Sony released a new video detailing the DualShock 4 and what developers think about it. Those speaking are internal Sony developers so they are somewhat obligated to love the new controller. That being said, there does seem to be a lot of love that went into the controller, and Sony says that it was designed with input from studios around the world.

While it’s nice to know a bit more about the controller, gamers are eager to get a look at the actual PlayStation 4 hardware itself. We probably won’t be able to see that until E3 in June though. Until then, we’ll just have to make due with more videos about the DualShock 4 and other PS4 services.
