  • Janet Yellen’s First Press Conference Goes Awry

Recently confirmed Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen held her first press conference and Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Wednesday.

In general the meeting went over well, except for some confusion about the fate of the Fed’s low short-term interest rates which unfortunately spiraled into even more trouble for Yellen.

Under the previous Chair, the board agreed to maintain the low interest rates until the unemployment rate had fallen below 6.5 percent. Since the unemployment rate stood at 6.7 percent as of February this year, revisiting the issue was necessary. The market was wondering what would happen after the certain, impending 0.2 percent drop.

In the end, the committee decided to drop the definitive 6.5 percent threshold, but maintain its “forward guidance” towards lowering unemployment and achieving 2 percent inflation.

Many did, indeed, interpret this as Yellen allowing for continued low rates even after, hopefully, unemployment falls to below 6.5 percent. Yellen is well-known for being passionately pro-employment, so it is unlikely she would do anything to hinder the improving employment rate.

Some, however, interpreted her statements in the opposite direction. With no certain time frame, who really knew when the rates would spike again? Matters were not helped when Yellen estimated the time between the last asset purchases and the end of the low interest rate to be around “six months”, sooner than many expected. A minor panic ensued on Wall Street.

Fortunately, the Federal Reserve quickly released a clarifying statement. In the press release, FOMC outlines the factors they will be looking at in addition to unemployment before deciding to raise rates. These include “labor market conditions, indicators of inflation pressures and inflation expectations, and readings on financial developments”. In essence, it gives the market even more time to partake of the low rates.

If more clearly stated in the beginning, this may have quelled many fears. Instead it caused a small uproar. Still, the matter was clarified in only a couple days. Yellen’s fate as a Chair is no where near decided yet. But, many critics posit, Yellen may choose to be more vague with her timelines in the future.

  • Shia LaBeouf Attends Press Conference Wearing Bag

Shia LaBeouf wore a paper bag over his head at a press conference in Germany leaving people wondering what on earth is wrong with the former Disney Channel star. The star, at the Berlin Film Festival promoting his film Nymphomaniac, showed up for the conference and answered just one question before exiting abruptly. He returned a short time later with the bag over his head.

Shia was asked how he felt about appearing in a film with such explicit sex scenes. Nymphomaniac is the film in which he and his costar actually engaged in sex acts rather than simply donning skin suits and simulating the acts in front of the cameras.

“When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea,” was the reply LaBeouf offered before getting up and leaving.

“I am not famous any more,” the handwriting on his paper bag read.

Interestingly enough, LaBeouf’s Twitter page features a tweet of this same line posted on his page several times between January 13th through February 9th.

He walked the red carpet at the Berlin Film Festival with the paper bag on his head, turning to fans on both sides of the walk way–making sure everyone observed his bizarre behavior.

The Hollywood Reporter says Shia LaBeouf’s trouble started the evening before the press conference when some fans tried snapping a photo of him in a bar at the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin. He appeared angered and even lunged at the fans. Some acquaintances intervened and kept the situation from growing out of hand.

Shia LaBeouf has a history of erratic behavior. Her recently announced publicly that he was retiring from acting–and that quite clearly hasn’t been the case. Those who work with the actor know he can’t be controlled.

What do you suppose is behind Shia LaBeouf’s strange behavior? Is he hoping to gain a reputation for being a bit eccentric or is he on drugs–or perhaps suffering from some kind of mental illness?

It will be interesting to see what LaBeouf’s next antics might be.

  • 9/11 ‘Truther’ Disrupts Super Bowl Press Conference (VIDEO)

“Investigate 9/11. 9/11 was perpetrated by people within our own government.”

Those were the words said by 30-year-old Matthew Mills, an independent journalist who decided to take matters into his own hands during the Super Bowl press conference on Sunday.

As MVP Malcolm Smith of the Seattle Seahawks was about to speak, Mills stole the microphone and interjected with one of the most trendy and common conspiracy theories of the 2000s: the attack on the World Trade Center and events alike on September 11, 2001 was an inside job.

The sudden interruption took the room by surprise and even had jaw-dropped Smith quite puzzled.

Oddly enough, security officers didn’t immediately react to the confusion. Instead, an obviously irritated staff member shoved Mills off the podium.

    According to RT.com:

“…he was escorted out of the area by public relations and arrested by police for trespassing. He was later released, but his ability to gain entry into the stadium without a press pass or a ticket raised questions about the security in place at the Super Bowl.”

Mills reported to NJ.com that he initially wanted to get near the MetLife Stadium just to interview fans about the game, but then saw his opportunity to get closer to the press conference by boarding the employee bus.

Mills says that he was wearing a press pass around his neck, but not the same one as those who were permitted entry into the press conference. After gaining admission pass the gate and into the stadium, he said he was “dumbfounded” that he had actually gotten that far.

“I just said I was running late for work and I had to get in there. It was that simple,” he told NJ.com.

Coincidently, Coach Peter Caroll of the Seahawk’s is rumored to be a 9/11 ‘truther’ as well. According to reports, Caroll confronted a former four-star general last year about his suspicions of the government’s involvement.

Nonetheless, Mills’ scandalous interruption is bound to raise questions about security procedures during the Super Bowl.

  • Ubisoft Live Streaming Its E3 Press Conference On YouTube

Ubisoft is poised to have an interesting showing at E3 next month. They have traditionally been one of the strongest partners with Nintendo and the Rayman Legends leak proved that they’re doing some impressive things with the Wii U. There is plenty more to look forward to as well.

Ubisoft confirmed today that they will be hosting their regular press conference to kick off E3 on Monday, June 4 at 3 p.m. PDT. Like usual, it will feature demonstrations and trailers of all the new games the publisher has coming out this year. They are also promising a few surprises, perhaps some news about Beyond Good and Evil 2.

The games that are currently confirmed to be shown at E3 this year are Far Cry 3, Rayman Legends, Rocksmith and Assassin’s Creed III. The publisher will obviously have more, but we’ll have to wait till the show to see what they have planned.

“This year’s E3 promises to be one of our biggest and best yet,” said Yves Guillemot, Founder and CEO of Ubisoft. “We’re showcasing the strongest, most competitive collection of core titles we’ve had in years, innovative new games for new platforms and a broad lineup that has something for everyone.”

Ubisoft is also using its intrusive DRM gaming service Uplay for the first time this E3. Players will be able to pose questions to the teams at Ubisoft which will be asked on stage during the press conference. The publisher will also be sending eight of its Uplay members to E3 to talk to the teams behind games like Assassin’s Creed III and Far Cry 3.

Unfortunately, E3 is invite only and so is Ubisoft’s press conference. For us lowly peons who aren’t important enough to attend such an event, Ubisoft will be streaming it live via their YouTube channel. Uplay will also be host to videos and exclusive content similar to what Nintendo will be doing with their own E3 coverage.

My only hope is that Ubisoft gets Mr. Caffeine back. He was simultaneously the best and worst thing to ever happen at E3. Here’s a recap of what last year was like:

  • Tim Tebow Press Conference: Jets, Broncos, Manning, and of course God

Tim Tebow, the newest New York Jet, gave a press conference today about being traded by the Denver Broncos and what the immediate future holds for him.

When asked about his feelings regarding the trade being a “publicity stunt”, Tebow said his feelings weren’t hurt by the comment but that he disagrees completely. He touched upon the subject of “Tebowing”, which is part of the “Tebowmania” that has been touted as something that may prove to be a distraction for New York, saying that many players take a knee to pray before a game and he sees nothing special about doing it himself.

Tebow responded to many of the reporters by name and remained personable throughout, answering questions with relative ease. He says that while his biggest goal is to be a good player and a good teammate, what he does off the field is much more important and that he is extremely proud of what his fame has allowed him to do with the Tebow Foundation, which works with orphaned, disadvantaged, and disabled children.

The young QB also talked about his spirituality a bit, touching on it after being asked what his core beliefs were, but he ended it by saying he was there to talk about the Jets, not his faith.

He says the experience of being traded to New York has been a “whirlwind”, mainly because the team acquired him without looking over his contract fully, which sparked talk of the trade not being completed.

When one reporter asked about his feelings on how he was treated by Denver–and if he understands the outrage on the part of his fans regarding it–Tebow said he wishes the Broncos nothing but the best and that they have one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game.

“It’ll be fun to play each other,” he said.

The newest Jet seems to have won over quite a few viewers, who appreciate his ease with speaking at such a big conference.

  • Peyton Manning Last Day As An Indianapolis Colt, Twitter Reacts

Today’s is Peyton Manning’s last day as an Indianapolis Colt, and to announce such a drastic alteration in the sports world, Colts owner Jim Irsay and Manning took to the podium for Manning’s last press conference as a member of the team that drafted him. It was a bittersweet day as both men shed tears, and reminisced about the good things the Colts have accomplished during Manning’s tenure.

It should be noted there was no animosity from either party. Irsay hoped for the best for Manning and, of course, Manning didn’t have one bad word to say about his former franchise. A couple of screenshots from the presser do a good job of relaying the mood:

    (image)

The second screenshot was taken while Manning was in the process of holding back tears. Clearly, both men regret this unfortunate business decision, and, as you might expect, Twitter felt the same way. First, however, here’s perhaps the most precise tweet concerning the Colts decision to part ways with Manning:

Is Jim Irsay SURE Andrew Luck will be better long-term than Robert Griffin III? I’m not.(image) 13 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Much to my surprise, Skip is on the right track, but he still fails to ask the most important question: Will either of these rookies be better than Manning? Irsay better damn well hope so. As for the rest of the Twitter reaction, a great deal of sadness was apparently had by all who support the Colts:

so glad I am not at that press conference because I would be balling my eyes out there and not at my desk #indycolts(image) 22 minutes ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

“The Manning jersey will never again be worn by a Colt on the field.” -Irsay(image) 32 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Meaning the Colts will retire the number 18 jersey. Considering all that Peyton accomplished there, it only makes sense. The reaction continues:

The difference between the Peyton Manning situationa and the Brett Favre situation is that Peyton isn’t retiring. #indycolts #class(image) 24 minutes ago via TweetDeck ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@jimirsay “Peyton completely unselfish” during this process #colts #indycolts(image) 31 minutes ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

I’m glad Irsay didn’t try to frame Manning as some kind of troll who demanded this kind of upheaval, because the opposite is true. Irsay and his cronies fell in love with Andrew Luck and have decided to rebuild the team around the soon-to-be rookie. If Manning goes to another team and plays like the Manning of old, I wonder how Colts fans will feel, especially when their rookie quarterback inevitably struggles?
