  • ‘Shadow of the Eternals’ Development Halted

Developer Precursor Games today announced that development on Shadow of the Eternals has been put on hold. Precursor had launched a Kickstarter campaign for the game back in May, but cancelled it after it became clear it would fail. A second crowdfunding project was launched in July and came to a close in August, far short of its funding goals.

Shadow of the Eternals was being promoted as a “spiritual successor” to Eternal Darkness, a popular horror game for the Nintendo Gamecube. Many former members of Silicon Knights were on staff at Precursor, including Silicon Knights founder Denis Dyack. Silicon Knights and Dyack have a questionable reputation within the games industry, possibly contributing to the failure of the Shadow of the Eternals fundraising efforts.

Dyack, the chief creative officer at Precursor announced the the shutdown of the Shadow of the Eternals project in a post on the Precursor forums. On behalf of Precursor, his statement praised the games developers and its fan base, saying, “We are very happy with what we have accomplished both as a group and with the community.” From the statement:

Many of us will be taking a break. For those who are not aware, we all worked on this project as a labor of love and self financed 100% of everything for a over a year to try to make Shadow of the Eternals a reality. Although we did not succeed on doing this, we succeeded in making many friends and starting something that we hope provided value for those involved. We have no regrets.

The game also may have been hindered by its chosen platforms. Shadow of the Eternals was set to launch on Wii U and PC. PC gamers who don’t also use consoles are unlikely to have a history with Eternal Darkness, and even console gamers don’t seem to be buying the Wii U.
