  • What You Need To Know About The Postini To Google Apps Transition [Video]

Google acquired Postini back in 2007, then slowly transitioned features from the hosted security and archiving service into Google Apps. Back in August, Google provided an update about the plan moving forward, noting that it planned to have Postini fully transitioned into Google Apps by the end of the year.

At the time, Google released a minute and a half-long video about the transition. With the new year, Google has now posted an hour-long presentation about the transition complete with an update, an overview of the transition, a look at the Google Apps platform, and a Q&A session taken from customers.

Google notes that some of the content in the video is forward looking, and is subject to change.

  • Google Gives Update On Transition From Postini To Google Apps

Google acquired Postini back in 2007, and since then, it has slowly transitioned features from the hosted security and archiving service into Google Apps.

Google provided an updated today about the plan moving forward, as it plans to have Postini fully transitioned into Google Apps by the end of next year.

“In the past two years, we developed and released numerous Postini features directly in Google Apps, such as user policy management; email content filters; archiving, retention and eDiscovery with Google Apps Vault; and many more,” says product manager Adam Dawes. “As we look ahead to 2013, we’ll continue these feature integrations and gradually transition Postini Google Message Security (GMS) and Google Message Discovery (GMD) customers to Google Apps. This will enable them to take advantage of the Postini features built directly into Google Apps that are more flexible, powerful and user-friendly.”

Google Apps admins can start using a new feature to manage routing and basic filtering of email to on-premis systems (as well as email to Google Apps users) starting today.

“This feature will make it easier for groups like sales, support and operations to use generic email addresses such as sales@ or support@,” says Dawes. “Messages to these addresses typically need to be routed to ticketing or alerting systems outside of Gmail, and now Google Apps has the capability to define routing rules to get these messages to their proper destinations.”

As far as the full transition goes, Google says Postini users don’t have to worry about doing anything yet, but warns that change is coming, and it will give users info about migrating in time.

  • Google Launches Log Search for the Cloud

Google just introduced message log search for Postini, its group of cloud security and archiving services.

"When messages pass through the Postini service, header and transaction data about these messages is stored in a log," explains Gopal Shah of Google Postini team Previously, admins only had access to this data through customer support. With the Message Log Search feature, email administrators can now easily run searches on these logs and drill down to the details about how specific messages were processed."

Administrators can look at things like whether messages were delivered, quarantined, archived, or encrypted.

"Say an admin was checking the delivery status of all inbound emails from Matthew Smith," says Shah. "Message Log Search returns results which include who received the message, date/time, disposition, and more."

The feature has been available in beta testing, and Shah says customers have found it useful for things like tracking errant emails, figuring out why certain people didn’t get messages, proactively searching for "problem senders", etc.

Log search is now available through the Postini service administration console, and in Google Apps Preimier Edition.
