  • Chicago Cops To Be Investigated In Laquan McDonald Shooting

Chicago cops involved in the killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald are being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice, according to Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Monday.

The Justice Department is set to investigate whether Chicago police violated any laws during the shooting. Lynch said the “pattern-and-practice” probe will look into the use of force, accountability, deadly force, and how the Chicago Police Department “tracks and treats” those kinds of incidents.

Mayor Rahm Emmanuel said he fully supports the investigation to keep their residents and the whole community safe. “Nothing is more important to me than the safety and well-being of our residents and ensuring that the men and women of our Police Department have the tools, resources and training they need to be effective crime fighters, stay safe and build community trust,” said Emmanuel.

The move to do a thorough civil rights investigation came after the video of a white police officer shooting McDonald 16 times was ordered released by a court judge. Officer Van Dyke, the police in the video, has reportedly been charged with first-degree murder.

The city and the department faced a slew of criticisms after accounts from cops present at the scene seemed to contradict the video footage of the shooting. Van Dyke and his fellow cops said McDonald threatened them, a statement that contradicted the events shown in the video. Several Chicago residents are questioning the authorities for keeping mum on the issue. Emmanuel and interim Police Supt. John Escalante are tight-lipped regarding what happened to the cops involved in the shooting.

Prior to filing a lawsuit, the family of McDonald reportedly received a $5 million settlement in an attempt to conceal the footage from the public. Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez also faced public outrage for not pressing charges against the suspect.

The Chicago Police has been involved in 409 shootings since 2007.

Klamath Falls Shooting Suspect Now In Custody

Oregon law enforcement officials have confirmed that persons of interest in the shooting of a Klamath sheriff’s deputy have been identified and arrested.

On Wednesday afternoon the deputy was making a routine traffic stop near the intersection of Onyx Avenue and Bisbee Street in Klamath Falls.

Without warning, the driver of a black SUV opened fire on the law enforcement official.

The sheriff’s deputy has since been identified as 40-year-old Jason Weber. Weber is a seven year veteran of the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s deputy was reportedly hit twice, in the face and side.

Weber was initially transported to the Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls, but the deputy was later transferred to the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

It is known that his injuries were serious enough to require an operation.

As of now, Weber is reported to be in stable condition.

The man responsible for shooting him remained after the incident, however it was announced Thursday that the Klamath County’s major crimes team successfully apprehended the man accused of shooting the sheriff’s deputy.

The suspect has been identified as William Jack Parkerson. KTVZ reports that Parkerson was apprehended in Chiloquin early Thursday morning. Parkerson’s girlfriend Karey Leigh Pascoe was also arrested and taken into custody.

  • Virginia Deputy Shoots Own Daughter By Mistake

What’s worse than getting busted for sneaking out of the house? How about getting shot by your own father in the process?

This situation comes to us by way of a sheriff’s deputy named Easton McDonald.

The man stumbled out of bed in the early hours of Tuesday morning to confront what he thought was an intruder. Unfortunately for the McDonald household, things didn’t go quite as planned.

According to the Washington Post, McDonald was made aware of a supposed intruder in the house through the security system, which informed the startled man that someone was in the garage.

Local law enforcement officials said that McDonald then armed himself and went down into the basement. It was there that he saw a “dark figure” walking towards him.

It was then that McDonald is reported to have opened fire, hitting his 16-year-old daughter “in the torso”.

The sheriff’s deputy called 911 immediately after realizing his terrible mistake.

McDonald attempted to take his injured daughter to a nearby hospital himself, but he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a barrier. He was not seriously injured and there were no further injuries to his daughter.

The teen was eventually taken to Winchester Medical Center. As of Thursday, she is in stable condition.

Easton McDonald is a sergeant with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

McDonald has been on administrative leave since the shooting took place. Authorities stated that the incident is currently the subject of an internal investigation.

There are a couple of takeaways from this very unfortunate situation:

1.) You should definitely make sure your kids are all accounted for if your security alarm goes off in the middle of the night.

2.) If there is the remotest chance that sneaking out of the home of gun-owning parents might get you shot, whatever you’re creeping out of the house for had better be worth it!

  • Darren Wilson Named As Ferguson Cop Who Killed Mike Brown

After a week of protest and controversy, the man thought to have caused it all by shooting unarmed Ferguson teen Mike Brown was finally identified Friday morning.

During a press conference, Chief Thomas Jackson informed the public that the officer who killed Brown is named Darren Wilson. According to Jackson, Wilson had served with the FPD for six years.

Perhaps in an effort to offer the freshly identified man the benefit of the doubt, it was noted that he’d not had any disciplinary actions taken against him in the past.

Since the Saturday shooting, Wilson has been on administrative leave. One imagines he’s quite possibly as far out of the way as possible considering the outrage.

The police department did not accept questions from reporters about the shooting or the manner in which they handled the resulting unrest.

Instead, the police handed out copies of the police report as to what they say happened on the day Brown was fatally shot.

According to the police, Brown was the suspect in a robbery. He was approached because he fit the description of the robber.

While this may explain the reason Brown would have been apprehended alive, it does not exactly explain how an unarmed suspect is shot multiple times by a Ferguson police officer.

As for Wilson, he has yet to step forward and give his side of the story, though he may be forced to do so after having been identified.

Those who criticized the shooting, the police treatment of protesters, and the harassment of journalists, will likely want their questions and concerns answered in the coming days.

This police report leaves much to be desired in the way of sensible answers.

  • 93-Year-Old Woman Gunned Down By Texas Police

More than 100 people are said to have attended a vigil for the 93-year-old woman that was fatally shot outside her home on Tuesday.

Though the incident is being investigated, the entire matter seemed to have stemmed from a 911 phone call about an armed woman.

When police arrived on the scene in Hearne, Texas, they found the irate Pearl Golden. Golden was allegedly angry at her nephew for taking her car keys away because she had failed a driver’s license exam.

Supposedly she had threatened him over the car keys with the weapon.

When the police arrived on the scene, Officer Steve Stem ordered Golden to put down the weapon.

According to a police report, when Golden didn’t comply, the officer shot her at least four times. An exact number has yet to be confirmed.

The elderly woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Stem has since been placed on administrative leave. Meanwhile, members of the community are heartbroken and trying to figure out just how the situation got so far out of hand.

Hearne Mayor Reuben Gomez addressed the crowd at Golden’s vigil, saying that Stem was going to be a topic of discussion during a Saturday city council meeting.

It’s expected the city council will debate what actions to take, if any, against the police officer.

As family, friends, and neighbors gathered to remember the woman that was known affectionately as “Ms. Sully”, they prayed for peace and patience with local authorities.

The investigation is ongoing and members of the Hearne Police Department, Robertson County District Attorney’s Office and Texas Rangers are working together to determine what happened and what actions to take going forward.

As the news gains national attention, many have been skeptical about the need to shoot a 93-year-old woman multiple times, even if she was armed.

  • State Trooper Shot During Traffic Stop in Michigan

The state of Michigan is mourning a state trooper lost Monday night after he was shot in the head during a traffic stop in Mason county. Army Veteran and State Trooper Paul Butterfield, 43, died during surgery later that night after being airlifted to the hospital. Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Michigan governor Rick Snyder has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until after Butterfield’s funeral. “This senseless incident is a grim reminder that our brave public safety officers put their lives on the line every day when they go to work protecting Michiganders,” Snyder said. “They are heroes.”

According to reports, Butterfield approached a vehicle during a “routine traffic stop,” and was shot after sending in the vehicle information to dispatchers. Someone passing by found Butterfield a few minutes later and called 911. While undergoing emergency surgery at Munson Medical Center, Butterfield passed away.

Police located the suspects involved in the shooting two hours later after finding a vehicle at a gas station that fit the description Butterfield provided. The suspects, a man and woman who haven’t yet been identified, fired shots at police after being approached. No officers were harmed during the exchange, and the male suspect was shot in the knee and treated at the hospital. Both suspects are in custody; charges will follow pending an investigation.

State police Lt. Chris McIntire said that Butterfield did everything by the book during the traffic stop. “What he did was perfect,” McIntire said. “You can’t prepare for something like this. He did the right thing.”

Many Twitter users have expressed their prayers and support for Butterfield’s family, fiancée and the Michigan State Troopers:
