  • Amazon Opens Its Own PlayStation Network Store

From its humble beginnings in 2006, the PlayStation Store has grown from one of the most basic digital storefronts into one of the best. Frequent sales, great selection and day one digital releases are all great reasons to shop on the PSN. Now it’s getting even better thanks to Amazon’s marketing muscle.

Amazon unveiled its new PlayStation Network digital storefront today where gamers can buy anything that’s currently on the PSN through Amazon. In other words, PlayStation fans now have more choices when buying digital content for their Vita, PS3 or PS4.

Kotaku reports that Amazon’s PSN store will be offering some special deals as part of its grand opening. For starters, those who buy select digital content through Amazon will get $5 back in PSN credit. This deal is good for those who buy the digital versions of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins, Battlefield 4, The Last Of Us, FIFA 14 or Madden NFL 25 through Amazon. The above games’ season passes will also net you the $5 credit. It should be noted that this credit can only be used on the Amazon PSN.

If digital games aren’t your thing, you will have a chance to net $5 in PSN credit today during Amazon’s buy two, get one free sale on all PS4 games. The sale will start at noon today and last for only a few hours. If you’re getting a PS4 on Friday, you may just want to take advantage of that to pick up three games instead of two.

With Amazon now having its own PSN store, cost conscious gamers will now have two places to buy digital content for their PlayStation systems. That being said, those same gamers may want to stick to Sony’s PSN for now as Amazon only carries a limited number of games, and its DLC selection is slim pickings. Of course, if you’ve only played the year’s big releases, Amazon’s store should suffice.

  • PlayStation 3 Live Events App Finally Launches

As Microsoft and Sony position their next-generation consoles as total entertainment devices for the living room, both companies know that live television is an important part of that initiative. Though individual apps have allowed live events such as concerts and UFC pay-per-views to be viewed on consoles, live TV is still an area cable boxes dominate.

Sony is hoping to change that, however, and today released a “Live Events Viewer” app for the PlayStation 3. The app will appear after a PlayStation Store update scheduled for later today. The Live Events Viewer will need to be downloaded by PlayStation owners, and can be found in the Apps section in the PlayStation Store.

Sony is promising that live concerts, sporting events, and “other entertainment events” will be offered through the Live Events Viewer app. Some live events will be streamed free, while others will be offered on a pay-per-view basis. In addition to live content, Sony stated the app will also have on-demand offerings such as concerts, “races,” and wrestling. The app will get weekly updates.

As its first live promotion for the Live Events Viewer app, Sony is encouraging PlayStation 3 owners to purchase the app’s first big “sporting” event – the WWE‘s SummerSlam. The wrestling pay-per-view will be held this coming Sunday and costs $45. A WWE press conference for the event was held today at the Beverly Hills Hotel:

  • Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus Announced

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus Announced

After teasing gamers with hints of a new title on the PlayStation Facebook page, Sony today officially unveiled the game: Rachet & Clank: Into the Nexus. Though PlayStation fans were hopeful the game was a new PlayStation 4 exclusive announcement, Into the Nexus will be out only for PlayStation 3 this holiday season. The game is a downloadable title that will sell for only $30.

The game is being developed by Insomniac, the creators of the previous Ratchet & Clank games; the Resistance and Spyro the Dragon series’; and a recent poorly reviewed shooter, Fuse. Into the Nexus will be a new single-player Ratchet and Clank game, set as an epilogue to the Ratchet & Clank “future saga,” which includes the games Tools of Destruction, Quest For Booty, and A Crack in Time.

Tha game is full of what Insomiac says are “crazy new weapons and gadgets,” and manipulating gravity will be a large part of solving the platforming puzzles in the game. The announcement trailer for the game shows as much:

  • Gran Turismo 6 Demo Out Today, Includes GT Academy Qualifier

Racing sim fans are set to have a big holiday, with both Microsoft and Sony having racing games as part of their next-gen console launch title line-ups. For those that aren’t ready to plunge into the next generation, Polyphony Digital will be releasing Gran Turismo 6 for the PlayStation 3 later this year.

It seems the release for the next Gran Turismo could be imminent. Sony announced pre-order bonuses for the game last week, and a demo for Gran Turismo 6 will go live on PlayStation Network.

The new demo is a bit different from most playable demos, however, as it is linked to a competition sponsored by Nissan’s GT Academy team. The demo will walk players through the basics of the game and includes some “warm up” races and time trials to complete using Nissan cars. The 31 players who complete the longest time trial with record times will race against each other and the winner of the Racer X competition at E3. The winner of that race will be able to attend a real GT race camp. The time trial competition runs from today until July 28, though the demo will stay up until August 31, with a bonus race being added after July 28 for players who earn bronze medals in all the available time trials.

  • PlayStation Network Summer Sale Starts Tomorrow

Last week, Microsoft announced that it would be holding an “Ultimate Game Sale” this week for Xbox Live. Several big games made the list and a few each day will be on sale throughout the week. Now, Sony has stepped up to counter Microsoft’s sale with one of its own for the PlayStation Network.

Sony today announced that the PlayStation Network “Summer Blast” sale will start tomorrow in the U.S. The sale will last around two weeks, with different titles being on sale each week. Discounts will range from around 20% off to 60% off, though PlayStation Plus subscribers will see even steeper discounts.

The first weekly sales period will last from July 2 to July 9. The games on sale will be: Call of Duty: Black Ops II, The Amazing Spider-Man, Batman Arkham Asylum, The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest, Mortal Kombat (for both PS3 and Vita), Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, Shadow of the Colossus, and Ratchet & Clank Collection. The second sales period will be from July 9 to July 16. The second group of games: Fast & Furious Showdown, Star Trek, Men in Black: Alien Crisis, The Simpsons Arcade Game, X-Men, Hitman Trilogy HD, Lord of the Rings: War in the North, Silent Hill: Book of Memories, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (for both PS3 and Vita), The Adventures of TinTin: The Game, Star Wars The Force Unleashed II, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game, Just Cause 2, Prince of Persia Classics Trilogy, Tron Evolution, Alice: Madness Returns, and Fight Night Champion. There will also be some movies on sale during these next two weeks, but the only notable ones are Ted, Up, Toy Story 3, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The specific prices for each of these digital products can be found over at the PlayStation blog.

Sony is not including recent AAA titles such as BioShock Infinite, Crysis 3, and Far Cry 3 in its sale, which will all be a part of Microsoft’s Xbox Live sale. It’s likely that Sony’s discounts will be a bit higher than Microsoft’s, however, so it seems gamers will get lower prices or newer games, depending on which console the use.

  • Mars War Logs Trailer Shows Off Combat, Skills

Last December, Spiders Studio revealed the first trailer for its upcoming Mars: War Logs. The game was billed as a cyberpunk RPG set on the planet Mars. Players will be able to take on the role of a man named Roy as he battles agains Technomancer dictators who control the red planet’s water resources.

Promises were made that Roy will have “dozens of skills and perks” for players to adapt their play-style to be combat effective, stealthy, or technomancer-y. It’s an ambitious project for something that is slated to be released via Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network, presumably at a price comparable to other downloadable indie titles.

Today, Focus Home Interactive and Spiders released a trailer for the game focusing on the real-time combat players will be involved in. The system appears to be similar to other other modern third-person action games, such as the Assassin’s Creed games or the Batman: Arkham games.

The trailer also provides a glimpse at the game’s skill tree and shows off a few of the powers that can be enabled. The crafting and gear system gets a quick mention near the end, but I suspect that might need a video of its own before the game’s “Spring 2013” release date.

  • Star Wars Pinball DLC Coming to PlayStation Network

It’s not quite Star Wars: Battlefront III, but today Sony will be releasing the Star Wars Pinball downloadable content (DLC) for Zen Pinball 2.

The add-on will cost $10 and includes three different tables: “Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back,” “Boba Fett,” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” The content is available as “Cross-Buy,” which means it can be bought once and played on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Zen Pinball 2 can be downloaded for free via the PlayStation Network.

It seems that Sony really is getting serious about cultivating free-to-play experiences on PlayStation platforms. The company today released the multiplayer portion of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception for free as well.

A preview for the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” table has been posted by Sony. It shows Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano battling their way through the clone wars. 3-D animated sequences, or “main missions,” are activated by progressing through the game (in this case, lighting the “council” lamps in the table’s center).

  • Superfrog Remake Coming to Sony Consoles

Superfrog Remake Coming to Sony Consoles

Tem17, the developer behind the popular Worms series, today announced that it will be rebooting the Superfrog franchise.

A new title called Superfrog HD will be released sometime in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles. The game will feature updated graphics, but no other details have been announced.

The original Superfrog was released for the Amiga in 1993. The platformer became a cult hit, but was overshadowed by the success of the Worms games.

“We’re extremely excited about bringing Superfrog HD to PS3 and PS Vita,” said Debbie Bestwick, managing director of Team17. “It’s the most requested game that our fans are always requesting to see make a return. Now, with the 20th anniversary of the original Superfrog and the recent re-release of our classic survival-horror Alien Breed, we feel the timing has never been better.”

Yesterday, Team 17 released an HD remake of its other classic Amiga title, Alien Breed, on the PlayStation Network, complete with online multiplayer. The original Alien Breed was released for the Amiga in 1991, and became a genuine hit for the system. The game spawned multiple sequels, including Alien Breed II: The Horror Continues, Alien Breed: Tower Assault, and Alien Breed: 3D.

  • Capcom Arcade Cabinet Brings Classics to Consoles

Today Capcom announced all of the details on its upcoming Capcom Arcade Cabinet for PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE. Starting on February 19, the publisher will release one of five “Game Packs” every two weeks. Each pack will include three classic Capcom arcade titles in full HD.

The first pack will cost $5 or 400 Microsoft Points and includes Black Tiger, 1943: Battle of Midway, and Avenger. Black Tiger will be given away for free, presumably to show off the features of Arcade Cabinet. Subsequent packs will each cost $10/800 Microsoft Points, but patient gamers can wait until May 21 to buy all of the titles in a $30/2000 MIcrosoft Points bundle. The games in each pack will be made individually available for $4/320 Microsoft Points two weeks after they are released in a pack.

Pack 2 (March 5) will include Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Gun.Smoke, and Section Z. Pack 3 (March 19) includes Side Arms, The Speed Rumbler, and Exed Exes (Savage Bees). Pack 4 (April 2) includes Commando, Legendary Wings, and Trojan. Pack 5 (April 16) includes 1942, SonSon, and Pirate Ship Higemaru. Gamers who buy all of the titles – even in bundle form – will receive two mystery games (Street Fighter, perhaps?).

In addition to the HD optimization, the Arcade Cabinet features a “virtual dip switch” to customize game settings, online multiplayer for games with two-player modes, and leaderboards. Also, since Capcom knows many modern gamers won’t enjoy the difficulty level of classic games, all of the games will have a “Casual Mode” that will “allow less experienced players to wade into the more difficult challenges with fun and sometimes unexpected tweaks.”

  • Sony Revamps the Online PlayStation Store

Sony Revamps the Online PlayStation Store

Last year, Sony revamped its storefront on the PlayStation 3. Though the interface was clean and intuitive, it also somewhat resembles the tile-based interface Microsoft had adopted for its Xbox 360 consoles. It features large images of new releases and popular games.

This week, Sony has rolled out a revamp of the PlayStation Store on the web, tuning it to more closely resemble the store on the PlayStation 3. The interface features a similar blocky interface, along with large ads for new titles or deals at the top of most pages. Users who log into the website with their PlayStation Network or Sony Entertainment Network accounts will be able to purchase content and see it appear on the “My Downloads” section of their consoles. The service isn’t able to automatically download content remotely to a PlayStation 3 or Vita console, but Sony stated that feature and others are on the way.

For all the inevitable complaints that Sony will get due to the change, the interface actually is an improvement. Information on titles is clearly displayed, including any PlayStation Plus discounts available. It is also easy to organize titles with the filters on the left side of the page to find a selection of games or movies that are tailored to individual tastes or needs.

Sony released a video detailing the new interface, but it’s all pretty self-explanatory.

  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is Coming to the PlayStation Network

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is Coming to the PlayStation Network

Everyone in the gaming world is waiting to see what wild new experiences Rockstar will bring with the launch of Grand Theft Auto V. While waiting for that game, however, Rockstar is hoping that fans of the GTA series will be looking to ease back into the sandbox gameplay with a nostalgic trip through the older games in the series.

Just last year, the publisher released Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. It also released Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PlayStation Network.

Though there hasn’t been an announcement that San Andreas is on the way to mobile platforms, Rockstar today did reveal that Vice City is coming to the PlayStation Network next week. Gamers will soon be able to take on the role of Tommy Vercetti via their PlayStation 3 (and presumably Vita) consoles. The game takes place in a Miami-inspired city and features 80s themes and music. The game’s story also loosely follows that of the movie Scarface.

Vice City will launch part of the PlayStation 2 Classics collection next week, on January 29 (January 30 in Europe). Unfortunately, the price of the game won’t be as inexpensive as its $5 price on mobile platforms. Vice City in the PlayStation Store will sell for $10/€10/£8.

Rockstar also teased that “more classic Rockstar titles” will be coming to the PSN “in the weeks and months ahead.”

  • Final Fantasy Sale Coming to PSN in Europe This Week

Sony today announced that most of the Final Fantasy series titles that can be found in the PlayStation Store will be half-off this week. The sale will begin on Wednesday, January 23 after the lasest store update is complete.

Most of the core Final Fantasy titles are included in the sale. Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, and Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions for PSP and the PS Vita will cost €4.99/£3.99/AU$7.35. Strangely, Final Fantasy VI will cost the same €4.99/£3.99 as these other titles, but Australians will have to pay more at AU$9.75.

Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy Dissidia for the PSP will cost €9.99/£7.99/AU$14.45. The PSP/PS Vita version of Final Fantasy Dissidia will go for slightly less: €8.99/£7.29/AU$13.25.

Bulgaria, Hungary, and Qatar are all exempt from the sale and won’t be getting the sale prices on Final Fantasy games. For specific titles, other countries such as Hungary, Israel, Kuwait, and Turkey will also be left out of the sale.

Early in the year is a good time to catch up on the classics, before big summer titles such as Grand Theft Auto V begin to hit stores. Also, discounts are just what gamers will need to feed their habit this year while simultaneously saving up for the next-generation consoles rumored to be launching this fall.

  • Trials-Like Urban Trial Freestyle Coming to PS3 & Vita

Whether it’s catching up to Nintendo with motion controls or a Smash Bros. clone, or catching up to Microsoft with Netflix streaming and gamer avatars, it seems that Sony has been playing catch-up for this entire console cycle. That’s not necessarily criticism. Playing copycat to bring its gamers the experiences everyone else has shows the company is trying hard to please everyone. However, it also shows a lack of oversight when it comes to setting priorities on which of the many gaming experiences it wants the PlayStation 3 or Vita to represent.

Today another cloned experience was detailed for the PlayStation Network. Urban Trial Freestyle will be heading to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita “soon.” It’s extremely similar to the popular Xbox LIVE game Trials HD and Trials Evolution.

Urban Trial Freestyle will have 20 tracks and five “kinds” of stunts to perform on each track, and each stunt will have its own leaderboard. The game will include a time attack mode, ghost racing, and a stunt mode.

The backgrounds in the stages will be a bit more active than those seen in the Trials games, featuring cop chases and other destructive set pieces. However, a casual viewer of the new trailer would easily mistake Urban Trial Freestyle for Trials.

  • Demon’s Souls is Coming to PSN Next Week

Demon’s Souls is Coming to PSN Next Week

It’s taken a while, but game publishers have finally come back around to the realization that gamers really are gluttons for punishment. Where early games such as Mega Man and Metroid were difficult and took many hours to master and beat, newer games generally provide players a clear run to the ending with plenty of nice content to experience along the way.

Demon’s Souls, however, brought back the frustration of early gaming. The game won many awards and glowing reviews despite its high level of difficulty. And though its successor, Dark Souls, has claimed the recent spotlight, many gamers still consider Demon’s Souls to be the superior game.

With that in mind, Atlus today announced that Demon’s Souls will soon be available for download through the PlayStation Network. Starting Tuesday, January 8, U.S. PlayStation 3 owners will be able to purchase the digital version of the game for $20.

As a celebratory gesture, Atlus is holding what it calls the “Pure White World Tendency” event from January 8 to 14. The event “slightly reduces the difficulty of the game and opens up a few things that can only be accessed in the Pure White state.” Lowering the difficulty, even just a little, doesn’t seem to be in the spirit of the Souls games, but it could certainly ease-in newcomers who have been coddled by the blockbuster games released this past holiday season.

Speaking of the holiday season, Valve’s Steam Holiday Sale is still going strong, and Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is half-off until 1 pm EST tomorrow, January 4.

  • God Mode “Retro” Shooter Announced

Atlus, the Japanese game publisher famous for handheld and downloadable titles such as the Megami Tensei series and Catherine, today announced a new downloadable third-person shooter.

The game, called God Mode, will feature what Atlus is calling “retro shooter action” with some RPG elements thrown in for players to battle undead cannon fodder in Hades. The developer claims it will have non-linear gameplay, “fast and frantic” shooting, and “hordes of on-screen enemies. As with most shooters these days, God Mode will have a four-player co-op mode. From Atlus’ YouTube description:

“Do you like running? How about gunning? What if special abilities are thrown into the mix? Upgradable weapons? Let’s say there’re dozens of on-screen enemies to unleash this firepower on, and as your reward for dispatching them you get experience and gold to collect that can be used for character customization and new equipment–all the while playing alongside friends in 4-player cooperative play! If you like the sound of all this, then you’ll love God Mode.”

The title will also feature customizable characters and an experience system that unlocks new weapons and abilities. If you think all of this sounds a bit similar to Borderlands 2, you’re not alone. As the trailer reveals, the developers of God Mode are also trying to capture the black humor of the Borderlands games.

Still, if Atlus can release something half as fun as Borderlands 2 as a low-priced, downloadable title, God Mode stands a chance of being a sleeper hit in 2013. The game is scheduled to launch in “early 2013” for Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network, and Steam.

  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Hits PSN, Rockstar Releases 20-Minute Prologue Video

Considering Max Payne 3’s mild success and the fact that it doesn’t have a big holiday title out, Rockstar may not have had the most impressive year in 2012. However, next year’s Grand Theft Auto V is certain to be a hit, and, in the meantime, the developer is pushing its older GTA titles out to platforms they have never been on before.

Just one week after Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was released for iOS and Android devices, Rockstar has released Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the PlayStation Network. It’s available in North America today for $15, and will be available in Europe starting tomorrow for €15 or £12.

To celebrate the game’s new release, Rockstar has re-released a video called “The Introduction.” It’s a 20-minute prologue that sets up the events and characters seen in the game. From that announcement:

The Introduction is told from various characters’ viewpoints, which are intertwined together to reveal the network of organized crime forces operating throughout the state of San Andreas. Tension builds as threats are carried out, stakes are raised and communication breaks down. In Los Santos, a drive-by shooting in Grove Street Family’s territory ignites a series of events to be further explored in the game.

Sounds like it’s time to kick back, enjoy some hot coffee, and relive one of the classic GTA games.

  • Portal 2 DLC For PlayStation Move is on the Way

November 6 is a big day. It’s election day in the U.S. More importantly, it’s also launch day for Halo 4.

Sony is trying its best to take some wind out of Microsoft’s sails, though, and will be releasing a PlayStation Move compatible version of Portal 2 via the PlayStation Network on November 6. The game will be 30% off for PlayStation Plus members and those who already own Portal 2 for PlayStation 3 will receive the PlayStation Move upgrade in a free patch.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sixense Studios announced it has collaborated with Sony and Valve to bring PlayStation Move support to Portal 2. Better yet, what’s being called a “motion DLC campaign” for Portal 2 will also be available next Tuesday for $10.

Called Portal 2 In Motion, the DLC will provide players with new test chambers requiring players to use new powers. One of the new abilities is the scaling and rotation of objects, as well as grabbing and placing objects from a distance. As demonstrated in the video below, this ability will allow players to distort companion cubes and other objects to function as bridges or sit on more than one switch. Another power Sixslide calls “portal surfing” allows players to slide an active portal along a surface.

  • PlayStation Store Redesign Launches in Europe

For once, Europe and Australia aren’t behind North America in the gaming world. Sony today released the redesigned PlayStation Store for Playstation 3 in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Those in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Brazil will have to wait until October 23.

The new store features a “re-imagined” user interface, predictive search, and improved filtering, which Sony says will help customers find content faster. Sony also stated that the new PlayStation Store now has “more in-depth information” about purchases, demos, free trials, movies, TV shows, games, and apps.

The update appears to move the PlayStation Store closer to a style resembling Microsoft’s Xbox 360 dashboard. Sony’s store now features large ads front-and-center that show content players can purchase. Tiles and icons abound.

To comfort (or tease) the Americans, Sony released what amounts to a launch trailer for the redesigned store. It shows the breadth of content Sony is hoping to highlight through the store and just how much new information is provided on the new content-specific pages that collect a piece of content’s add-ons, avatars, and themes in one location.

  • Tokyo Jungle Launch Trailer Released

    Tokyo Jungle Launch Trailer Released

While we’re all waiting those last few weeks until the year’s major holiday launch titles begin rolling out, it’s good to remember that many of the most popular games of the past few years have been quirky indie titles.

Keeping that in mind, the latest trailer for Tokyo Jungle has just been released. The game invites players to take on the role of one of dozens of animals, fighting to survive in the urban jungle of a post-apocalyptic Tokyo. Players can take on the role of cats, dogs, elephants, giraffes, pandas, or even dinosaurs. If nothing else, it should be like nothing gamers have ever seen and in the current age of video game sequels, that is welcome.

The game was developed at PlayStation C.A.M.P., a developer talent search program that Sony implemented to help indie developers in Japan have their ideas realized. Tokyo Jungle launches on the PlayStation Network in the U.S. on September 25.

  • New Unfinished Swan Trailer Teases Story and “The King”

When The Unfinished Swan was announced, the artsy nature of the game caught some attention, but none of the gameplay or story aspects of the game had been revealed. All gamers knew is that they would be throwing gobs of paint into a completely matte-white world to uncover the geography and texture of their surroundings.

Finally, a bit about the game’s story and setting have been revealed. In anticipation of the beginning of PAX Prime, Sony has released a story trailer for The Unfinished Swan that features the reveal of “the king.”

The game looks unique, and it looks like the “king” will be the reflection of that uniqueness. It also appears that players will be taking on the role of Monroe the orphan.

Ian Dallas, the creative director at Giant Sparrow, posted the trailer to the European PlayStation blog, and let slip a few details about who this “king” is. From the blog post:

He’s the guy who created the entire world that players will be exploring in The Unfinished Swan. And I don’t want to give too much away here, but the King built a lot of cool stuff. If you like all-white statue gardens, giant labyrinths or colossal monuments to the King, then you’re in luck.

Unfortunately most people don’t like those things, at least not in their backyard. Turns out living in the middle of a giant labyrinth is pretty inconvenient. Which is why just about everyone in the kingdom eventually moved away. But the King is the sort of guy who goes right on building the stuff he wants no matter what other people think about it. Whether or not that’s a good thing depends on your point of view and – like I said – how you feel about giant labyrinths.

Dallas announced back in May that The Unfinished Swan was “almost done,” so hopefully PlayStation Network gamers will be able to get their hands on the title soon.

  • Tokyo Jungle Coming to PlayStation Network

The game that hopes to found the urban-based animal survival genre is coming to the PlayStation Network next month. Today Sony announced that Tokyo Jungle is set to hit PlayStation 3 owners on September 25th. Two new trailers for the game have also hit the internet today, giving gamers a glimpse of a Tokyo overrun by animals and where survival is the only rule.

Tokyo Jungle is a different type of post-apocalyptic survival game. In contrast to most post-apocalyptic stories in which at least a few humans are able to eek out some sort of existence, humans are nowhere to be found in Tokyo Jungle. Instead, players chose to play as one of over 50 different animals, including cats, dogs, elephants, giraffes, pandas, chickens, deer, bears, and dinosaurs.

The object of the game is to survive in the urban jungle that is now Tokyo using each specific animal’s talents, though Sony hints that discovering the fate of mankind is a part of the game’s story mode. In survival mode, players will fight to claim territory and produce offspring, gaining survival points. These points can be used to unlock new animals and outfits that increase animal abilities.

Tokyo Jungle was developed by PlayStation C.A.M.P., a developer and talent search program Sony has put together to help indie talent in Japan get their ideas made into games. If Tokyo Jungle is any indication, programs such as C.A.M.P. should be more widespread and could become the source of fantastic new gaming ideas and IPs.

Check out the trailers below to get a sense of what’s in store for PlayStation 3 owners next month:
