  • Three New Wonderbook Titles, Including Book Of Potions, Launch November 12

Last year, Sony launched a new type of game called Wonderbook that combined the AR capabilities of the PlayStation Eye with a PS Move controller to bring books to life on a television screen. Sony smartly launched it with Book of Spells – a game set within the Harry Potter universe and written by J.K. Rowling. Now Sony is readying three more titles for this holiday season.

Sony announced today that it’s bringing back J.K. Rowling for a second round of Wonderbook magic with Book of Potions. Like Book of Spells before it, this game will allow players to interact with the world of Harry Potter like never before by letting them create the potions seen throughout the books and movies.

Book of Potions alongside the Wonderbook peripheral will be available as a bundle on November 12 for $30.

Book of Potions isn’t the only Wonderbook game coming out on November 12. Sony will also be partnering with the BBC to release Walking with Dinosaurs – a game based on the hit series and upcoming theatrical film of the same name.

Walking with Dinosaurs will also be available as a bundle on November 12 for $30.

Sony is also finally releasing Diggs Nightcrawler – a game it announced for Wonderbook last year. This PSN-only title will put players into the role of insect detective Diggs Nightcrawler as he solves mysteries around Library City.

Diggs Nightcrawler will be available on the PSN on November 12 for $14.99.

  • Portal 2 DLC For PlayStation Move is on the Way

November 6 is a big day. It’s election day in the U.S. More importantly, it’s also launch day for Halo 4.

Sony is trying its best to take some wind out of Microsoft’s sails, though, and will be releasing a PlayStation Move compatible version of Portal 2 via the PlayStation Network on November 6. The game will be 30% off for PlayStation Plus members and those who already own Portal 2 for PlayStation 3 will receive the PlayStation Move upgrade in a free patch.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sixense Studios announced it has collaborated with Sony and Valve to bring PlayStation Move support to Portal 2. Better yet, what’s being called a “motion DLC campaign” for Portal 2 will also be available next Tuesday for $10.

Called Portal 2 In Motion, the DLC will provide players with new test chambers requiring players to use new powers. One of the new abilities is the scaling and rotation of objects, as well as grabbing and placing objects from a distance. As demonstrated in the video below, this ability will allow players to distort companion cubes and other objects to function as bridges or sit on more than one switch. Another power Sixslide calls “portal surfing” allows players to slide an active portal along a surface.

  • Sony’s Until Dawn Gets a Halloween Trailer

Sony’s Until Dawn Gets a Halloween Trailer

Here’s yet another horror video game trailer to celebrate everyone’s favorite candy-filled holiday. Sony today released another look at its upcoming “teen horror” game Until Dawn.

Don’t be too scared, though. Where the Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs and Outlast trailers highlight some of the scarier atmosphere and action in what look to be the best survival horror games in years, Until Dawn is more of a movie-horror game.

Sony has specifically stated that the game, which uses the PlayStation Move peripheral, will feature “all the elements you’d expect from your favorite teen horror movies.” The game will have a “funny” script, be “sexy and scary,” and feature a “beautiful young cast.” Judging from today’s trailer, there are also an elements of the Saw movies thrown in. Essentially, Sony is trying to make a Cabin in the Woods for the PlayStation 3.

It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but bringing the teen slasher genre to video games also sounds fun. The formulaic structure and ridiculous tropes should fit nicely in a playable context.

  • Beyond: Two Souls Gameplay Footage Leaked From E3

At Sony’s big E3 press conference this year, the game Sony chose to show off first was the next game from Heavy Rain developers Quantic Dream. Beyond: Two Souls looks to be a cinematic experience in interactive video game form. It stars Ellen Page as Jodie Holmes, a young psychic who shares a link with a powerful invisible entity named Aidan. The game successfully set a dark and mature tone for the Sony presentation that carried through for most of the games previewed that night, except the Wonderbook demonstration, of course.

Now, some leaked footage of the Beyond demo at E3 has surfaced. The video was quite obviously recorded on a cell phone, so the game’s impressive graphics are not on full display. The audio is similarly bad, as the room was obviously crowded. Still, the footage shows a 20-minute sequence from the game featuring an exciting train sequence and lots of explosive action near the end. It demonstrates how the game will play and what fans of interactive drama genre can expect:

It appears that Beyond will use plenty of quicktime events to propel the narrative forward. Quantic Dream has announced that the game will utilize Sony’s Move controller, and this footage seems to show Aidan being controlled in that manner. Though the developers have stated that player decisions and actions will determine Jodie’s fate, it is not clear whether any of the decisions the player made in the demo actually affected the direction of the story.

  • Sony Reveals Move Racing Wheel And Gold Controller

There have been a ton of great games to come out of this years E3 already but not too many peripherals to speak of… until now. The newest kid on the block is an official Playstation Move racing wheel. The wheel has a really cool feature where the handles pull out to become motorcycle handles with throttle grips! Pretty dang neat!

Here are the features direct from the PS Blog:

-Precise motion tracking for responsive handling of your vehicle

-An innovative folding grip design will allow you to switch between racing a sports bike to a high-octane supercar

-Feel the intense vibration feedback of your vehicle as you trade paint with the competition

-Experience realistic gameplay action using the race car paddle shifters and motorcycle twist throttle controls

The move racing wheel will be $39.99 when it is released and as of this time there is no release date.

Also being introduced is the Gold Dualshock 3. This one is one of the coolest versions to come out since the pink one. The Dualshock 3 controller will be identical in every way to every other Dualshock 3 controller except that whomever wields it will dominate all of humanity. Not really but it looks really cool.

  • Sony Shows Off Playstation Move “Virtual Reality”

When Plastic Studios, the developers, along with Sony’s Santa Monica Studio, behind the upcoming PlayStation Network title Datura, was asked by Sony to use Sony’s HMZ-T1 3-D projector headset to make their game more immersive, they took it as a challenge. The company not only used an extra PlayStation Move controller to provide line-of-sight camera movement, they created an entire set-up that looks like something out of a gamer’s dream.

In the description to the video, Plastic describes why they set up such an elaborate tech demo:

Just a couple of weeks before GDC 2012 we were asked by Sony to try to write a simple head tracking functionality with the use of Playstation Move motion controller for our PSN title Datura. They said that the virtual hand looks magical in their HMZ-T1 personal projector and we should try to improve the immersion even more so everyone could get a glimpse of what future gaming would look like. Thanks to our friends from Platige Image we were able to prepare even more immersive setup…

The only problem is, the person playing the game can’t see the massive screen in front of him. The experience, for him, would be the same if he were standing in his own living room, so it’s clear this is mostly a publicity stunt. Still, the demo shows just how far technology has come that the terrible “virtual reality” that was touted in the 90’s finally looks immersive and impressive. The helmet the man is wearing simulates a 150-inch 3-D screen from 12 feet away.

Datura is being billed as a mystery game, which is rather unique in today’s gaming climate. Players control, using a PlayStation Move controller, a disembodied hand with which they can explore every aspect of Datura‘s environment. The trailer, which you can see below, reminds me of older games such as Myst. Whatever Datura turn out being, it is nice to see game developers playing around with new ideas and technology. Leave a comment below and let me know how you feel about Datura or the future of “virtual reality.”

  • Sony Patents Bizarre PlayStation Move Peripheral

Sony has patented a peripheral for the Playstation Move controller that looks – odd. The peripheral, as you can see in the illustration above, is a ring in which the Playstation Move controller can be inserted. It’s similar to Nintendo’s steering wheel peripheral that came with its Mario Kart Wii game, except Sony’s design has handles sticking out of it. And from the pictures provided with the patent, it appears the handles can be moved 90-degrees from a horizontal position to one where they are parallel. It’s hard to describe in words, so take a look at the photos themselves, and keep in mind that the dotted lines are what Sony is not patenting:

    Sony's patented Move peripheral
How to use the new peripheral

What could Sony be thinking with this design? The easy answer would be that the controller is designed to be used as either a big-rig steering wheel or motorcycle handlebars, but I can think of a few possibilities that are more fun. It could be used to simulate avian flight by flapping the “wings” up and down repeatedly. It could simulate hedge trimmers, or, more excitingly, lock cutters. Perhaps players can use it one-handed and whip it at their TV screens for a new Indiana Jones game.

Of course, Sony may simply be covering their bases against 3rd party peripheral designers. If that is the case, I really hope the videogame industry isn’t going to follow the rest of the tech industry and descend into a cesspool of patent troll lawsuits. If that does happen, you’ll have to excuse me while I patent the series and order of directions preceding a shoryuken.
