The Wonderful 101 Gets A Launch Trailer

Wii U owners are understandably excited about The Wonderful 101. Besides Pikmin 3, it’s the first real game to hit Nintendo’s struggling system since March. It doesn’t hurt that the game comes from Platinum Games and Hideki Kamiya – creator of titles like Bayonetta and Viewtiful Joe.

Gamers in the U.S. will have to wait until September 15 to get their super hero action on, but gamers in the UK will be getting it on August 23. Nintendo recently shared the launch trailer for the title in the UK, and you can be that we’ll be getting something similar when the game launches here next month.

If you want to know more about The Wonderful 101, check out the latest Nintendo Direct. In it, Kamiya explains many of the game’s features, and he also shows off a 7 minute trailer. It’s definitely worth checking out.

  • The Wonderful 101 Gets Its Own Nintendo Direct

During the last Nintendo Direct on Wednesday, the company announced that it would be holding another Direct on Friday that focused exclusively on The Wonderful 101. The upcoming Wii U exclusive from Platinum Games has had a lot of people talking, and Nintendo spent 20 minutes discussing what is one of the most anticipated Wii U titles of the year.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata took a break from Nintendo Directs this time around and let Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya take over for the entire show. He revealed all new details regarding The Wonderful 101, including combat, puzzle solving and super powers.

Kamiya revealed that players won’t have access to all of the heroes from the start of the game. There are 100 heroes in total, but players will have to find and recruit most of them as they play through levels. Players will be able to temporarily boost their numbers, however, by rescuing civilians and turning them into temporary heroes.

As for the powers, Kamiya revealed that the heroes can unite to form a first, a sword, a gun, a whip, a hammer and much more. Players will learn combos for each of these unite forms to infuse it with some action game elements. He also revealed that players can use up to five unite powers at once to deal massive damage.

Finally, Kamiya said that the game will rate players after each mission based on three parameters – clear speed, attack combo and damage received. Players will receive a one through five rating for each parameter and these scores will combine to give you a final score. He encouraged players to play through each mission multiple times to get a Pure Platinum score on each mission.

The Nintendo Direct ended with an all new trailer for The Wonderful 101. Here’s 7-minutes of story and gameplay:

As an added bonus, here’s the Nintendo Direct with Kamiya looking super snazzy in a suit:

  • Nintendo Announces Bayonetta 2 As A Wii U Exclusive

There was a little game from a few years ago called Bayonetta. It was the most refreshing action game in years with tight controls and a focus on stylish action not seen since Devil May Cry 3. It was unfortunate then when SEGA announced low sales figures and Platinum Games was non-committed to a sequel. It seems that Nintendo was fully committed to getting us that sequel.

Nintendo announced two games from Platinum Games today that the company would be publishing themselves. The big surprise was that Bayonetta 2 would be coming to the Wii U as an exclusive title. The trailer was short, but oh so sweet.

It’s hard to really gather much from the trailer beyond Bayonetta being back with her signature gun feet. There seems to be a new enemy as well. I really hope that the game is as crazy as the original was.

It should also be noted that Nintendo announced that they would be publishing Bayonetta 2. It’s going to be a Wii U exclusive. That’s a major win for Nintendo as that game has a small, but very dedicated, fan base. For example, I was unsure on the Wii U until that announcement. Now I’m planning on putting money down for the console this weekend just for one game.

Platinum Games also revealed the final title for their game that was shown at E3 this year – Project P-100. The game’s real title is now “The Wonderful 101.” The title refers to the characters in the game numbering 100, plus you the player being the final character. It still looks zany and wonderful.

The Wii U just got a dose of hardcore game action from Platinum Games. Some gamers are obviously going to be angry over Bayonetta 2 being an exclusive, but it’s quite exciting nonetheless. Nintendo is definitely catering to the hardcore now with this. Besides, SEGA would never have published a Bayonetta sequel. Nintendo is giving fans something that nobody else would have risked.

  • Nintendo’s Wii U P-100 Trailer Revealed at E3

With all of the games highlighted at Nintendo’s big E3 press conference, it’s amazing that a game such as Project P-100 got overlooked for the presentation. Project P-100 is the working title for a game being developed by Platinum Games for Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console. Platinum Games is the developer behind such games as MadWord, Bayonetta, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

According to Nintendo’s website, P-100 takes place in a time when Earth is under attack by aliens. Players must find ordinary citizens around cities and group them up to form powerful heroes that can morph into large weapons or tools. The more citizens players find, the more powerful the morph abilities will be. From the Nintendo website:

Players can use the Wii U GamePad’s touch screen to command heroes such as Bonzai Man, Vending Machine Man and even Toilet Bowl Man. Heroes can also morph into gelatin to guard themselves from enemy attacks.

Players can also use the GamePad to explore areas unseen on the TV screen and solve puzzle elements.

I realize this doesn’t make much sense to read. Luckily, Nintendo has provided an announcement trailer for the title, which shows the “hero” morphing into a hand to either punch an alien robot or turn the crank of a drawbridge. The gameplay looks as crazy as the description sounds, but it also looks incredibly fun and creative. Take a look for yourself:

The game appears to be inspired by Pikmin (a title for which an announcement was also made today), but seems to have more of a combat focus. It will be interesting to see how P-100 utilizes Nintendo’s new Wii U controller to operate all of the on-screen mayhem previewed today.

  • Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Gets Amazing New Trailer

I will be the first to say that I was skeptical when Metal Gear Rising was first announced. I didn’t know if Kojima Productions had the chops to make a full-out sword-based action combat game. It turns out I was right as the game was quietly shelved only to be picked up a few months later by the absolute genius team over at Platinum Games. Now that the team that brought us Bayonetta and Vanquish are in charge of the project, it’s looking to be one of the best games of next year.

For those who aren’t aware, Metal Gear Rising is an attempt at broadening the scope of the Metal Gear franchise. Previously, the series only focused on either Solid Snake or Big Boss. Rising is all about Metal Gear Solid 2 protagonist Raiden. It isn’t the whiny in a constant state of existential crisis Raiden that has taken up residence as Rising’s main protagonist though. It’s the amazing cyborg ninja that even the haters came to love in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The new trailer obviously wants to focus on the story that Kojima is probably involved with in some capacity. It seems the game will be exploring Raiden’s past as a child soldier who was then raised to be a test subject in Metal Gear Solid 2’s Solid Snake Simulation. None of that really matters, however, when the trailer goes over to the gameplay.

You’re going to have to see it for yourself, but trust me, it’s absolutely amazing. It seems that Platinum Games have mashed together the best parts of both Bayonetta and Vanquish into one future soldier action game that could only come from the greatest Japanese game developers.

The main gameplay hook of being able to direct your slices in any direction is still intact and even better than before. Just watch Raiden cut a helicopter into 10 different pieces and try not to get excited. It seems that Raiden has picked up a few new moves from the last trailer as well including some awesome stealth kills.

Konami has a hit on their hands here and I hope it does well. Platinum Games deserves far more respect than they’re given and it might give Sega a push to bring Anarchy Reigns, Platinum Games’ arena shooter, over to the West.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be out on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in early 2013. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wii U got its own version later on.
