EU and US Set to Join Forces Tackling Big Tech

The EU and US are prepared to join forces in an effort to tackle Big Tech’s influence.

According to a memo seen by Reuters, the U.S.-EU Trade & Technology Council will announce plans to tackle Big Tech in a meeting on September 29 in Pittsburgh. Big Tech’s power and influence has been a growing concern on both sides of the Atlantic, but any regulation must be universal to have the biggest impact.

The U.S.-EU Trade & Technology Council plans on announcing a number of initiatives, including on climate change, supply chains and trade. The fact that Big Tech is lumped in with those topics is indicative of how important the issue is for many regulators.

  • Rachel McAdams & Jake Gyllenhaal A New Couple?

A romantic dinner date or just two co-stars sharing a meal together?

Rachel McAdams and Jake Gyllenhaal were spotted out together having dinner a few days ago at a restaurant called Meat and Potatoes in Pittsburgh. However, before rumors spread like wildfire about a budding romance, it’s important to note that the two are currently in production in the Steel City on a movie called Southpaw.

A source confirmed to E! News that the handsome pair enjoyed their meals and finished their plates. And, yet another source told the entertainment network that they’re just pals.

    Here’s a look:

McAdams is usually in the gossip news because the entire world seems to want her to get back together with ex-boyfriend Ryan Gosling. The couple won the hearts of movie fans with the sentimental chick flick The Notebook in 2004, but they haven’t actually been an item for almost four years. The rumors of their romantic reunion run rampant despite the fact that Gosling has been dating actress Eva Mendes for nearly three years.

According to imdb.com, the tagline for the film Southpaw is: “A boxer fights his way to the top, only to find his life falling apart around him.” Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) is directing the drama. Oscar winners Lupita Nyong’o and Forest Whitaker are also in the film.

McAdams currently has several films in post production that should be released within the next year. One of the films is Cameron Crowe’s latest romantic comedy which is currently just being called, Untitled Cameron Crowe Project. The movie also stars Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone. The film has a December 25, 2014 release date.

  • Miley Cyrus Postpones US Tour Dates Due to Illness

Miley Cyrus officially postponed the remaining dates on the U.S. leg of her Bangerz tour on Friday.

The announcement on Cyrus’ website read as follows:

“All remaining U.S. dates on the Miley Cyrus Bangerz tour have been postponed. Miley is continuing to recover from the severe allergic reaction she suffered on April 15. Existing tickets will be honored on the new dates, which include previously cancelled and postponed dates.”

The postponed shows have been rescheduled for the first two weeks in August. Cyrus also added shows in Pittsburgh (on August 4) and Chicago (on August 14.)

According to the announcement, the European leg of the tour will proceed as planned. It kicks off May 2 in Amsterdam.

Cyrus ended up in the hospital in Kansas City last week, forcing her to cancel her show there at the last minute.

“Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz tour date scheduled for tonight, April 15, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City has been cancelled. Cyrus has been hospitalized for a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics and has been placed on medical rest by her doctors. She will not be able to perform as scheduled,” her website stated.

Representatives of the controversial singer explained that Cyrus was prescribed the antibiotic Cephalexin for a sinus infection she came down with in North Carolina. Cyrus suffered an “extreme allergic reaction” to the antibiotic.

“This type of extreme reaction can last from five to 27 days in these types of cases,” the statement said. “She will remain hospitalized and is under a doctor’s care until we see some improvement in her condition …”

The Bangerz tour kicked off February 14 in Vancouver. The spate of health-related cancellations started with Cyrus’ April 7 Charlotte, NC show.

Bangerz released in October 2013, debuting in the number one spot on the Billboard 200. In February the album went platinum with over 1 million copies sold.

  • Bald Eagle Egg Hatches in Pittsburgh

Bald Eagle Egg Hatches in Pittsburgh

The Pennsylvania Game Commission confirmed that the first of three bald eagle eggs had hatched Friday in a nest sitting in a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania neighborhood. Roughly an hour later, the adult male and female eagles were seen tending to the eaglet via a webcam put in place by the commission using PixController.

The nest was built in the Hays section of Pittsburgh, near the Monongahela river. The Game Commission commented that the second egg might hatch in about three days, and the last egg might hatch within a week. According to Commission Officer Gary Fujak, the 5.5-year-old female eagle will stay on top of the hatchling while she continues to incubate the other two eggs for the next several days. Fujak commented, “Generally, the first eaglet that hatches will have the best chance. The mortality rate can be as high as 50 percent within the first year,” though added that three eaglets in Crescent Township, Allegheny County survived last year.

Here’s the clip of the first eaglet hatching in the Pittsburgh Hays nest:

In the 1800’s, the Carnegie Steel Homestead site sat along the Monongahela River, severely polluting the water, as industrialization was yet to be regulated during that era. Fish populations were essentially destroyed, and during a survey in 1967, a researcher could only find one bluegill. As bald eagles rely on fish to survive, experts have noted that it’d likely been 250 years since the birds of prey were nesting along Pittsburgh’s three rivers, before being reintroduced three decades ago alongside efforts to clean up the waterways.

At present, there are now 76 species of fish in the Monongahela. With assistance from the Canadian government and the Pennsylvania Game Commission, there are now more than 200 eagle’s nests existing in the region. Fujak commented, “This is great. It is showing how adaptive wildlife is and how resilient they are.”

  • Bengals Punter Kevin Huber Suffers Jaw Fracture

Cincinnati Bengals punter Kevin Huber suffered a fractured jaw after taking a massive hit from the Steelers’ special teams player Terence Gavin last night, during Pittsburgh’s 30-20 win.

During the first quarter, Antonio Brown of Pittsburgh returned a punt from Huber, leaving the kicker as one of the few Bengals present to make a tackle. The Steelers’ Terence Gavin came in for a block with his helmet down, knocking Huber to the ground, leaving the punter with a bleeding face.

No flag was called during the play, though it’s likely that Gavin will be fined by the NFL for the hit. It was later reported that Cincinnati-born Huber suffered a fractured jaw during the play, and wouldn’t be returning to the game.

Huber gets smashed by the Steelers’ Terence Gavin:

After the hit, Huber remained lying down in the field for about 3 minutes, before being helped to his feet. He then jogged toward the locker room with gauze hanging out of his mouth.

The Bengals confirm Huber’s fractured jaw on Twitter.

Kevin J. Huber previously played for the University of Cincinnati, and was a two-time All-American. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Bengals, after being regarded as being one of the top punter prospects that year.

Huber takes to Twitter to acknowledge the ‘get well’ sentiments from his fans:

No word yet if Huber will be missing any additional games.

  • Le’Veon Bell’s Hard Hit Raises NFL Rule Questions

A scary play during the Baltimore- Steelers game this Thanksgiving has put the no-helmet rule under fiery discussion.

The Steelers were being dominated throughout the entire game against the Ravens, but fought for a chance to come back towards the end. After a few false starts, it seemed as if the Steelers were finally making some headway as Steelers rookie standout Le’Veon Bell headed towards the end zone.

Unfortunately, an obliterating tackle knocked Bell’s helmet off as he dove into the end zone in a hit heard around the world. Bell suffered a concussion and comforted supporters worldwide via twitter, and fans shifted their concern to the perceived unfairness of NFL’s no-helmet rule:

NFL rules clearly state that, “An official shall declare the ball dead and the down ended…when a runner’s helmet comes completely off.” Some experts are now debating if the rule should be modified to make an exception if a player is on his way down, since it is impossible to stop a play while a player is merely going along with gravity at that point.

Further discussion will determine if changes in the NFL rule are to be made. In the meantime, we are grateful that Le’Veon Bell is fine after such a devastating hit.

  • Pittsburgh Shooting Left Three Students Injured

A shooting close to the Pittsburgh area has left three Brashear High School students injured. One student was shot in the shoulder and neck region, another student in the arm as well as the foot, and the third in the head. The incident did not occur directly inside the school, but rather was brought to the attention of school officials when an injured student was questioned by administration of the Beechview campus. The shooter retreated into a wooded area near the vicinity of Brashear where police have since searched.

Finding the culprit (or culprits) behind this tragedy has shown to be a difficult process since the injured students have not been forthcoming with details. However, the police department has still been able to determine some potential leads. According to Diane Richard, who is the spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh police, “We do have some leads on the actor or actors.”

SWAT team members are still looking for those responsible for the shooting. At this time it has not been reported whether there was one party responsible or multiple individuals. A SWAT team vehicle was seen in a nearby neighborhood shortly after the shooting, where two handcuffed people were escorted into the armored vehicle.

Reports are not claiming the type of involvement the two handcuffed individuals may have had with the shooting at this time. Diane Richard said that the two may only be linked to the incident and not necessarily directly involved. According to WTAE, police are in the process of questioning multiple people who may be connected to the crime.

Brashear High School was placed on lockdown, and the three students were all taken to a hospital for treatment. Though the circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been released, Pittsburgh school district spokesperson Ebony Pugh, has shared some details. According to Pugh, the three students included two juniors and one freshman, who were in the midst of walking to a vehicle in which they all three had commuted earlier in the day when the shooting occurred.

  • Ben Roethlisberger Struggling This Season

Steelers heartbreak happened for the second time this season when the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers with a final score of Steelers 21 and Bengals 23. The dismal season to-date for Ben Roethlisberger becomes obvious when considering his plays thus far, which include having passed only 442 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the total of the two games. That’s an average of one-for-one with only two games into the season.

When battling the Bengals in the second game of the season for the Steelers, Roethlisberger passed 251 yards and made one touchdown. Fans should not be too disheartened with Roethlisberger’s performance just yet since he has the reputation for putting on the heat when the pressure rises. The video recap of the Steelers and Bengals showdown on Monday night proves how close the two teams competed for the win.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzjxGwj2Y_E

Though only two games into the season, fans have started voicing concerns that Ben Roethlisberger is being viewed as a caricature of himself where his skills and hype are disproportionate to the observable performances and expectations placed upon his broad shoulders. However, the season is just starting and the famous quarterback still has time to prove himself before being subjected to another potential discarding. Whether the Steelers will redeem themselves this season is anyone’s guess; however, in the meantime people are all too happy to comment on the potential outcomes for the season.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers “No Time To Panic” Says QB

Fall is in the air and football is here. This is good news for fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers even though the beginning has proven to be a rocky process. In the first home-opener loss in eleven years, the Pittsburgh Steelers were defeated by Tennessee with a score of 16-9.

When asked whether the disappointing start to the 2013 season was confidence-threatening Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said, “No, it’s not confidence-threatening. We expect to win every game no matter who we are playing or where we are playing so we obviously had high expectations going into that game, but this is the NFL and on any given Sunday if you don’t play very well then you’re going to get beat.”

Ben Roethlisberger has been sacked five times, but remains encouraging about the talents and prospects for the team. He spoke about the 2013 season in hopeful optimism even though a loss happened early in the season. “We lost a game in week one. Yeah, we didn’t play very well at all on offense, but there’s no time to panic right now. Let’s get ready to bounce back,” said Roethlisberger.

Members of the team are ready to prove themselves this season regardless of the loss early in the season, and fans are eager and excited to watch the team play some football this season.

Everyone can’t be a fan though, and some within the Twittersphere remain skeptical about the team as well as people who support the team.

  • Heinz Announces 600 Layoffs In US and Canada

American food company and condiment titan the H.J. Heinz Co. announced that they will be laying off 600 workers across the United States and Canada. The layoffs will include 350 workers at the company’s home base in Pittsburgh, PA.

Heinz was bought in June by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital for a reported $23.3 billion. Given the international flair of the deal, it comes as no surprise that is being labeled an efficiency move meant to help the company succeed on a global scale as it moves to being privately held.

All international aspirations aside, the company has said that it intends to remain headquartered in Pittsburgh, where it is a community staple. Even the home stadium of the Pittsburgh Steelers carries the name in the form of “Heinz Field”. Layoffs breed discontent though, and many people, including those in the Pittsburgh area, are wondering if the move will cause longtime customers to betray their brand loyalty.

With the move Heinz becomes the latest in a long line of classic American brands that have been purchased and changed into something different, for better or worse. The list includes American beer icon Anheuser-Busch, producer of Budweiser, agreed to be purchase by Belgian giant InBev, creating the largest brewer. While the Heinz move does not carry quite the same weight, it shows the changing tide of American business.

  • Scientist Charged in Wife’s Cyanide Death

ABC News reports that a neuroscientist from the University of Pittsburgh has been charged with homicide following the death of his wife from cyanide poisoning.

Dr. Robert Ferrante, 64, allegedly killed his wife, Dr. Autumn Klein, 41, by lacing her creatine drink with cyanide on April 17.

According to police records, the couple had been exchanging emails about conceiving a second child. The husband had suggested a regimen of creatine drinks would help them conceive. Police found a glass vial near a resealable, plastic bag holding a white substance in the couple’s home. Ferrante told them it was creatine.

However, police now know that Ferrente had used a credit card to order cyanide not long before his wife’s death. He is a neuroscientist, but he was not involved in any experiments using the chemical.

Police have discovered that there were arguments between Ferrente and Klein about whether she might be having an affair.

Anolther witness reported seeing Ferrente himself drinking creatine samples in his lab in the days before his wife’s death. The cyanide he ordered was locked in a safe that only he and one other person had access to.

Cyanide poisoning as a method of homicide or suicide is still not unusual. We reported here recently about a man who ordered cyanide just before his trial on sodomy charges involving a 14-year-old female. When found guilt, he took the poison right there in the courtroom and died rather than go to jail.

Another man we reported on recently died of cyanide poisoning shortly after winning a lottery of $600,000. No arrests have been made in his death.

Perhaps the most famous case of cyanide deaths was in the Jonestown massacre, where over 900 people drank cyanide-laced Flavoraid and followed their spiritual leader, Jim Jones, to their deaths.

  • Stabbings at Target Injure Three, Including a 16-Year-Old Girl

A trip to a local Target turned into a nightmare for Pittsburgh shoppers when a man wielding a kitchen knife began stabbing people in the store.

According to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report, the man was chased into the Target and proceeded to take a 16-year-old girl hostage. It is unclear who exactly was chasing the man.

The man reportedly entered the Target and ran to a second floor bathroom. He was then chased back downstairs, where he grabbed the girl, who was at a check-out line with her family.

The knife-wielding man was jumped by several men while holding the girl. According to the report, he was beaten using fists and a baseball bat. Police arrived soon after and arrested the man using Tasers and pepper spray.

The girl was stabbed in the back and arm, and is recovering at a hospital. Two others men were stabbed, one in the mouth and the other had his finger slashed.

  • Bear at Mall: Pittsburgh Mall Gets Another Furry Visitor

Bear at mall: Shoppers at the Pittsburgh Mills mall were treated to a peculiar event when a bear wandered into Sears department store on Saturday, prompting officials to evacuate the establishment. After using the automatic doors to gain entrance to the store, the bear was spotted running up and down the aisles, growling as it went. According to witnesses, people weren’t initially aware that a bear had entered the building. Thankfully, the 125-pound intruder was tranquilized and removed before it or any of the customers were injured.

Strangely, this isn’t where the story ends. Authorities explained that a second bear was seen in the area around the same time. Less than two hours after taking care of the first unexpected visitor, another bear was seen lurking outside of an Olive Garden restaurant. Before it could be captured by State game officials, the beast disappeared, though not for very long.

Sunday night, authorities believe the same bear caused a traffic jam when it wandered onto the highway. Again, the bear eluded captivity, prompting officials to set traps in hopes of ensnaring the animal before it harms itself or the poor soul unfortunate enough to stumble across its path.

Remember, folks: If you spot the creature in-question, whatever you do, do not approach it. Find a safe spot and call the police. Having seen what happens when a bear is backed into a corner, I can honestly say that it’s not going to end well for you or the bear.

  • Google Opens New Pittsburgh Office

    Google Opens New Pittsburgh Office

People who enjoy gawking at Google’s "creative" workspaces now have on more area to look over.  This morning, Google officially opened an office in Pittsburgh, and the 40,000-square-foot environment is hard to mistake for any other company’s property.

Below, you can see one of the more zoomed-out pictures Google provided.  Other highlights include a suspended room made from cargo netting, a conference room inside an upright metal tube, and a nice-looking cafe deck.  Plus a large cookie dough mixer, since the site used to house a Nabisco factory.

As for what sort of work will get done in Pittsburgh, different Googlers are supposed to focus on Ads Quality, Product Search, reCAPTCHA, Sky in Google Earth, and the Sky Map planetarium app.  A Google Apps sales team has been put together to do its thing, as well.

If any of this sounds interesting to you (and you’re a near-genius with an impeccable resume who lives in the area), Google announced that it does want to hire more employees for its Pittsburgh office.  Only 150 or so people already work there, so there are definitely positions left to fill.

Good luck if you decide to apply.  And congratulations to Pittsburgh’s existing population of Googlers on moving into your new home.
