  • New ‘Assassin’s Creed IV’ Shows Off Open-World Caribbean Exploration

Recent videos for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag have focused on the game’s pirating gameplay, particularly sea battles between ships. However, one core aspect of pirating has been missing: the freedom of the wide-open sea.

Today Ubisoft released a video designed to demonstrate just how large Black Flag‘s West Indies setting is. Players will get to explore Cuba; segments of Florida and the Bahamas; and all of the Caribbean waters in-between. In addition to attacking and boarding ships, players will be able to hire a crew to do some rum-running, find hidden upgrade items throughout the map, and explore desolate Mayan ruins. Players can also have Edward Kenway get drunk at taverns, just like real pirates.

The video is narrated by Black Flag Game Director Ashraf Ismail, who goes over all the new features included in the game. Sea battles aren’t left out completely, though, and the various weapon upgrades available for player ships are all previewed in the video.

  • Pirate Attack Fought Off By EU Navy

The European Union Naval Force this week fended off Somali pirates, saving 14 Indian sailors.

According to the EU Navy, an Indian cargo ship sent out a distress call on the morning of June 5. Twelve pirates had attacked the ship and taken control of the vessel.

The Royal Swedish Navy warship HSwMS Carlskrona and the Dutch warship HNLMS Van Speijk responded to the distress call, and arrived to counter the attack. Using a helicopter launched from a Carlskrona, the EU forces pressured the pirates to release their Indian hostages as the ship moved closer to the Somali coast. By late night, EU naval forces received word from the Indian commander of the cargo ship that the pirates had abandoned the vessel in the dead of night. None of the crew was injured in the incident.

The thwarted pirate attack is part of Operation Atalanta, the EU’s counter-piracy mission that has been active since early April.

“What is important is that fourteen Indian sailors are now safe and able to return to their families, after what must have been a terrifying ordeal,” said Rear Admiral Bob Tarrant, operation commander of the EU Naval Force. “This latest attack once again shows that the threat from piracy is real. We must all remain vigilant.”

  • .Pirate Now Available As A Domain Name

.Pirate Now Available As A Domain Name

ICANN might be the “official” administrator of top-level domain names. They give out all the .com, .net, .org and other well known domains to all the Web sites you know and love. There are alternatives, however, and one of the best is OpenNIC.

TorrentFreak has learned that OpenNIC is now offering a .pirate domain for those who want to register a domain with their service. Registration is free so you can create all kinds of .pirate domains that you could ever want. As TorrentFreak points out, the only drawback is that only people using OpenNIC’s DNS servers can access these domains though.

OpenNIC isn’t new to the domain registration game. They offer a wide variety of top-level domain names for users to take advantage of. Some of the more interesting domains are .geek, .parody, .indy, .fur, .gopher and .micro. The .pirate domain name is not being spearheaded by OpenNIC though as Travis McCrea, deputy leader of the Canadian Pirate Party, is the one behind it.

He says that the free flow of information is threatened by the governments of the world, so these kind of efforts are required. The .pirate domain and OpenNIC are efforts to keep the Internet open. It’s these kind of tools that allow people to get around Internet censorship.

TorrentFreak points out that some of the more popular .pirate domains like their own have already been accounted for. Everybody is going to want a .pirate domain so it’s good to keep the more popular domain names out of the hands of users who would want to abuse them.

The RIAA and the MPAA might get a little bent out of shape if they catch wind of the new .pirate domain. They’ll probably call it out as being only about theft and piracy, when in reality it’s all about the free spread of information. It’s the same way these groups treat the Pirate Party. They’re not advocating that you go out and steal people’s livelihood, but rather that the Internet remain open and in the hands of the people.

As an aside, you could use OpenNIC and thepiratepay.pirate to get around that pesky UK enacted censorship of The Pirate Bay. There are of course other ways that don’t require you to change your DNS server.

  • MegaUpload: Pirate Party Registering Complaints Against U.S.

MegaUpload, center of a recent sting operation from the FBI and DoJ, hosted a lot of copyrighted files. People may forget that it was also a legitimate business as well that hosted documents for businesses and personal use.

With the recent shut down of MegaUpload, many users are lost as to whether or not they will be able to recover their files. The Pirate Party has set up a page where users affected by the closure can add their names to an investigation by Pirate Parties International to bring complaints against U.S. authorities.

The FBI has caused incalculable damage, far in excess of the losses claimed by the content lobbies, in a fruitless attempt to prevent access to the media content hosted on Megaupload, some of which they claim to have been infringing copyright under US law. However, as much of the unlawful content will still be available via other services on the web, this action not only shows us the futility of these measures but also serves as a reminder that these files are not necessarily, nor have been shown to be, illegal in any country, including the US.

In contrast, by closing the service they have impeded the access to millions of archives of both private individuals and organisations, potentially causing huge personal, economic and image damages to a vast number of people. In addition, the Pirate Party understands they may have violated Articles 197 and 198 of the Spanish Penal Code by misappropiating personal data.

The widespread damage caused by the sudden closure of Megaupload is unjustified and completely disproportionate to the aim intended. For this reason Pirates of Catalonia, in collaboration with Pirate Parties International and other Pirate Parties [including the Pirate Party of the United Kingdom], have begun investigating these potential breaches of law and will facilitate submission of complaints against the US authorities in as many countries as possible, to ensure a positive and just result.

Those who had legitimate files on the file sharing network can add their name to the list here.
