  • Aliona Savchenko: Hot Pink “Pink Panther” Bodysuit Steals the Show

Russian duo Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov may have simultaneously won the gold and set a new world record in the figure skating pairs short program on Tuesday, but we can’t stop talking about Aliona Savchenko’s hot pink body suit.

Savchenko and her partner Robin Szolkowy, the figure skating duo from Germany, set their short program ice dance to the tune of Henry Mancini’s The Pink Panther Theme. Szolkowy was outfitted in officious shades of blue, but it was Savchenko’s neon pink catsuit that mesmerized spectators around the world.

Savchenko and Szolkowy had used the Pink Panther music and costumes a few years ago when they took first place in the prestigious Trophée Eric Bompard Grand Prix competition in Paris, France.

The decision to revisit the routine for Tuesday’s performance was a somewhat last-minute one, by Olympic standards.

”Even in practice it was easy to skate to and comfortable,” Szolkowy said. ”We know this program so well.”

“We wanted to show that it was easy,” Savchenko said. “We skated it for the fans. When you’re having fun doing your routine and the audience goes with it, it just makes you feel good and less nervous.”

“We had a good feeling, indeed the most important thing was to skate clean,” Szolkowy added.

And skate clean they did. Savchenko and Szolkowy performed the routine completely error-free on Tuesday, earning them a 79.64 and the silver medal.

The bronze went to Russia’s Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov who scored a 75.21.

“We are happy we changed our program. It was the absolute right choice. Maybe we couldn’t skate it at 110 percent, but at least at 105 percent,” said Szolkowy.

“When you’re having fun doing your routine and the audience goes with it, it just makes you feel good and less nervous,” said Savchenko.

  • Cannes Jewel Heist & Pink Panther Jailbreak Related?

Previously we reported about daring broad-daylight prison escape wherein members of the infamous European jewel heist syndicate, The Pink Panther Gang, sprung one of their own from prison. The escape was more of an invasion, really, with gang members firing AK-47s at guards that were either unarmed or armed with only handguns. The whole thing was quite the stir unto itself, and you can and should read about it here to be up to date on all the principals that come into play in this installment of the story.

The BBC reports that in Cannes, France – yes, that Cannes, the resort on the French Riviera that plays host to the famous annual film festival – there has been a daring jewelry heist Sunday morning.

Starting to see where this could be going?

Officials say a masked man entered the Carlton Hotel and made off with a briefcase full of jewels, it is not yet reported who the owner of the jewels was, but an exhibition of diamonds by the jeweler Leviev was being held in the lobby of the hotel.

A Cannes police spokesman said: “A full and urgent operation is under way to catch the culprit and recover these jewels. Thieves see Cannes as rich pickings.”

The deliciousness of the Carlton as the scene of a jewel heist is not lost authorities there. The Carlton Hotel is where Alfred Hitchcock filmed To Catch A Thief – his 1955 film about a jewel thief operating in the French Riviera.

So the big question is: do these two stories – a prison break involving a ring of jewel thieves, and a jewel heist in Cannes – have anything to do with each other? While authorities certainly won’t speculate about that publicly, you can bet that reporters will be asking the question. And you can bet that investigators will at least have the possibility of it in the backs of their minds as they go about their work.

    Inspector Clouseau would be thrilled.

  • Pink Panther Gang Again Breaks Members Out of Prison

Some producer out there needs to get started on this as a movie idea right away.

According to the Atlantic Wire, members of the famed international jewel thief ring, the Pink Panther Gang, have staged a daring jailbreak of a Swiss prison to free members of the gang. Prison officials say it was more than a simple jailbreak. It was an all-out armed invasion that overwhelmed prison staff and led to the escape of the targeted inmates. Prison official say they have no idea even which direction the escapees went.

Gang member Milan Poperic was serving a sentence of six years and eight months for robbing a jewelry store in 2009. In the middle of the day, while inmates were exercising in the prison are, gang members crashed two vans through the barbed wire prison gates, into the yard. They fired AK-47’s, pinning down unarmed prison guards and private security contractors only armed with handguns. They then set fire to one of the vans to keep the prison guards busy and made their escape with Poperic and another inmate friend of his.

Back in May of this year, Pink Panther Gang members helped two other fellow gang members escape from another prison.

The group is known for its daring theatrics. It got its colorful name from the Pink Panther comedy film, in which some jewels are stolen by submerging them in a jar of beauty cream. These real-life jewel thieves used the same tactic, earning them the nickname from law enforcement. It isn’t know if the group themselves have adopted the name. It is believed that the group consists of about 40 members.

The Pink Panther gang has allegedly stolen around $396 million worth of jewels in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America since 1999.
