  • Miranda Cosgrove and Jordin Sparks Promote NFL Women’s Apparel

Miranda Cosgrove and Jordin Sparks are just two of the famous faces signed on to promote the NFL’s women’s apparel line.

They’re joining Erin Heatherton, China Anne McClain, Dania Ramirez, and Jessica Szohr to show off the line of fan wear geared toward younger women.

The first glimpse of the new ads shows Cosgrove wearing a black, grey, and gold New Orleans Saints tee from the youth clothing line. She’s glammed it up with glittery gold pants.

Cosgrove, who became famous on Nickelodeon’s iCarly series opposite Jennette McCurdy, also voiced a character in 2010’s animated hit Despicable Me and its 2013 sequel.

She recently finished filming the thriller The Intruders.

Phoenix native Sparks stayed true to her home team in an Arizona Cardinals jersey. The shirt is emblazened with Larry Fitzgerald’s number 11 and also bears the Nike logo.

Sparks’ father, retired professional football player Phillippi Sparks, played for the New York Giants for eight seasons from 1992 to 1999. But Sparks defended her team choice:

“I was born and raised in Arizona. Although I have an allegiance to the Giants because of my daddy, I bleed Cardinal Red.”

Sparks jumpstarted her singing-songwriting career by winning the sixth season of American Idol in 2007. She released her first studio album in November of that year. “No Air,” her duet with Chris Brown, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2009.

Since then Sparks has tried her hand at acting – she’ll appear in Left Behind with Nicolas Cage, Chad Michael Murray, and Lea Thompson on October 3 – and attempted to get a third studio album released.

Gossip Girl star Jessica Szohr is a native of Menomonee Falls, WI so it’s no surprise that in the first round of ads she’s wearing a vintage-look Green Bay Packers sweater.

“It’s very fitting and it looks vintage,” Szohr said of the ’47 Brand Passblock sweater. “It’s different and cool, which is what I really liked about it.”

Szohr, who has dated Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the past, said it “was awesome to me that you could wear this line and be fashion-forward and comfortable and feel feminine and sexy while you’re just sitting and watching a football game … It reaches all ages and all different types of sports fans.”

Heatherton, McClain, and Ramirez will most likely be stepping out in team attire in the coming weeks since, as the official NFL Shop has already reminded fans, the season starts in just 50 days.

  • GoDaddy Executive Running for Arizona Governor

A former GoDaddy executive filed nominating petitions last week to enter the Republican primary for governor of Arizona. Christine Jones, a former legal counsel for the Scottsdale-based website hosting company, submitted her paperwork on Tuesday, the opening day of the regular filing period for the August primary.

Jones, who calls herself an “unapologetic conservative,” endorses gun rights, border security and the elimination of federal meddling in school policy. Jones, 45, was hired by GoDaddy in 2002 as an in-house attorney, when the Internet domain registrar had only a couple dozen employees. Jones left GoDaddy in 2011 after the sale of its parent company, Go Daddy Group Inc., to private investors for $2.25 billion, but still maintains ties as a consultant.

GoDaddy is planning for its initial public offering later this year, and has hired Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase to coordinate the stock sale. GoDaddy had previously filed for an IPO in 2006, but later cancelled it due to “market uncertainties.” GoDaddy, well-known for its zany television ads, was founded in 1997 as Jomax Technologies by former U.S. Marine Bob Parsons, and became the largest ICANN-accredited registrar on the Internet by 2005.

Here global supertalent Jean-Claude Van Damme appears as a GoDaddy spokesmodel:

Jones, who is running without any public funding, commented at a Phoenix press conference, “Let’s encourage job growth by getting the government out of the way. Let’s strive for excellence in education by applying Arizona standards, not federal standards. And importantly, let’s enforce immigration law with no amnesty. If you stand up to the federal government … you can actually make a difference.”

Jones is ready to drop millions of dollars on her campaign, and is already running television spots in the Phoenix area. She is running against a loaded field of Republicans, most of whom identify as conservatives, including former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith, Arizona state Treasurer Doug Ducey, Arizona state Sen. Al Melvin, former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and former California congressman Frank Riggs.

Jones said to supporters, “You are ready for a leader that is not a career politician, someone who will lead with no strings attached. I am an unapologetic conservative, I am a fierce defender of the Constitution, and as your governor, I assure you I will lead with untethered ideas.”

  • Mickey the Pit Bull Gets Life Behind Bars

Mickey the Pit Bull Gets Life Behind Bars

A New York-based animal rights group has 30 days to find a rehabilitation facility for an Arizona dog.

According to ABC 15 Arizona, Mickey the pit bull was sentenced to life in a shelter Tuesday following an outcry to save the dog from euthanasia.

A Phoenix judge declared Mickey guilty in the Feb. 20 attack of 4-year-old Kevin Vicente-who was left with a broken jaw and torn eye socket while in the care of his babysitter.

Municipal Court Judge Deborah Griffin demanded the dog be neutered, micro-chipped, and rendered dangerous so that “there would be absolutely no possibility of the animal ever doing this to someone again.”

Now the dog’s owner and the Lexus Project animal activist group is in search of a center where Mickey would have to spend the rest of his life away from society.

However, this verdict was good news for many dog lovers who have been on Mickey’s side since the story first reached major news coverage.

YouTube video petitions, candlelight vigils, a Facebook page titled “Save Mickey,” and T-Shirts dedicated to the pit pressured the court in protecting Mickey’s life.

The babysitter’s girlfriend, who initially filed a vicious-dog court petition, said that Mickey was instinctively aggressive and had killed one of her dogs before.

Animal supporters nationwide believe that only two people were accountable for the attack.

They argue that the owner-whose property displayed “Beware of Dog” signs-was responsible for Mickey’s vicious behavior and the babysitter was guilty of poor supervision.

Judge Griffin too determined that both parties were to blame for the unfortunate events that took place that day.

Kevin’s mother Floridalma Vicente told reporters through a Spanish interpreter, how disturbing it was to see people “[place] more value on an animal than on a child.”

However, donations from around the world have been sent to the Vicente family in efforts to show support for the little boy who may have to face years of reconstructive surgery.

As for Mickey, he’s currently locked away in a cage at the Maricopa County Animal Control and Care Center.

  • Cop-Killer Busted During Bank Robbery, Shot Dead

A man who was shot dead by an undercover officer after a bank robbery in Phoenix on Saturday was behind the murder of a cop last week, authorities say.

40-year old Mario Edward Garnett began a spree earlier this month in Atlanta, attempting a bank robbery but resorting to holding up a customer at the ATM; several hours later, he showed up in Mississippi, where he robbed another bank and was very nearly caught. The robbery ended in a violent gunfight, during which he shot two police officers. Gale Stauffer later died from his injuries.

Garnett’s robbery in Phoenix was almost successful, but he ran into a police officer during his getaway and opened fire. The officer wasn’t wounded, and an undercover agent who happened to be nearby on an unrelated case was able to intervene.

“This is a situation where we had a detective on the street doing a follow-up on an unrelated incident who heard a radio call. He was close by, so he responded,” Phoenix Police spokesman James Holmes said. “It chills me to think what might have happened had he not responded, based on the information we have now.”

Officer Stauffer was laid to rest on Friday with thousands in attendance; Officer Joseph Maher has been upgraded from critical condition and is able to walk with some assistance.

Garnett, it turns out, had just been released from an eight-month prisons sentence in July after a 2010 incident in which he wrote on the official White House website that he would shoot President Obama.

“If you order a strike on Iran, I’m going to come up there and blow your brains out on national TV,” he wrote.

  • Planes Collide Over Arizona, Killing Four

Planes Collide Over Arizona, Killing Four

Two small planes collided in midair just north of Phoenix, Arizona on Friday, killing four people.

According to a KSAZ report, the planes were both single-engine, with two people aboard each. The collision occurred on Friday morning, about 15 miles northwest of Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix.

The details of the crash have not yet been determined. Witnesses only reported seeing the two planes crash in midair. One of the planes was reportedly left relatively intact, while the other was, according to KSAZ, “charred wreckage.”

The Phoenix-based TransPac Aviation Academy has revealed that two of those killed were flight instructors for the academy. The organization has stated that it will set up a memorial fund for the families of those who died.

“I was terribly saddened to learn of the loss of two of our members of the TransPac Aviation Academy family,” said Stephen Goddard, CEO of TransPac. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow colleagues of the two instructors that were lost today. The individuals involved were deeply connected here at TransPac and their loss is felt by all of us. The entire extended TransPac community, including our Alumni, is in shock and mourning for the loss of both of these two good men. We are not releasing personal information about the individuals at this time out of respect for the families during this time of sadness and grieving.”

Goddard stated that TransPac is cooperating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on the investigation of the accident.
